- Chapter 7 - He is His Flower (7)
Xu Le was going to die.
Word was that he was on the verge of dying from thirst, foaming at the mouth and at his last gasp. By the time Xie Cheng arrived, a crowd had gathered in the corner, whispering and pacing around the cramped space as if they were watching a circus act.
“Move,” Xie Cheng said.
Jiang Yi, who was at the very center, shoved the people aside and lunged forward, grabbing Xie Cheng’s arm and pulling him inward.
As the dense crowd parted, the pungent smell of blood rushed into his nose without hindrance. Xie Cheng frowned deeply. His gaze drifted past the blood-smeared walls and landed on the corpse lying flat on the ground.
This isn’t Xu Le.
That was Xie Cheng’s first reaction.
The protagonist of a world doesn’t die that easily. They carry the world’s “luck” and are protected by the Heavenly Dao; whether a death is logical or not, it would usually trigger a collapse of the dimension.
Therefore, the only possibility was that Xu Le had escaped.
Xie Cheng crouched down and skillfully flipped the corpse over.
A grayish-blue face was instantly exposed to everyone. The cheeks were covered in scratches of various sizes, looking particularly gruesome. The clothes on his chest had been shredded, revealing bone-deep wounds. it was a zombie.
A motionless, dead zombie?
Just as the thought crossed Xie Cheng’s mind, a withered hand climbed onto his arm. Mud-caked nails dug into his sleeve, tearing a large chunk of fabric in an instant.
“Watch out!” Jiang Yi screamed. A flame had already flown from his hand, slamming into the zombie.
Fire ignited on the zombie instantly. Amidst the piercing light of the flames, Xie Cheng grabbed the zombie’s wrist, twisted it back with force, and flipped the creature onto the ground.
There was a heavy thud, kicking up a cloud of dust.
“Are you okay? Are you okay?” Jiang Yi threw himself at Xie Cheng, anxiously lifting his arm to examine it closely. “Thank goodness, no wounds.”
If there were no wounds, there would be no infection.
Jiang Yi’s head was quickly filled with thoughts like ‘I wonder if immortals can get infected by the zombie virus,’ and his head felt heavier and heavier until it rested against Xie Cheng’s arm.
Until he heard a crisp crack.
Xie Cheng stepped on the zombie’s skull. He glanced sideways at the clinging Jiang Yi, whose nose was rubbing against his sleeve and whose lips were nearly touching him.
“I’m fine.” Xie Cheng pulled his arm back and casually rotated his wrist.
It had stung a bit when the zombie grabbed him.
Jiang Yi stared at him for a long time. Once he was certain there were no signs of discomfort, he finally let out a long sigh of relief.
“Good! I knew that guy was a snake-hearted, ungrateful, wolf-in-human-clothing, cold-blooded.” Jiang Yi cursed ventingly. When he turned around, Xie Cheng was gone.
Where did his big, beautiful immortal go?
****
Xie Cheng walked along the ruined street. Looking back, the distant buildings had become shrinking black dots.
He retracted his gaze and focused on the tire tracks on the ground, following them forward.
After the apocalypse, the abandoned city had accumulated a thick layer of dust, attempting to bury the once-glorious civilization. Buildings had collapsed, plants had rotted, and the air was thick with visible haze. It was a desolate scene, devoid of any life.
The straight tire tracks were very obvious.
Someone fleeing in a panic would rush forward regardless of everything.
Where do you think he got that car? Xie Cheng suddenly asked the lazy 222.
222 jumped up with a start. What car?
The car Xu Le used to escape.
222’s entire form turned into a giant question mark.
Xie Cheng gave up on digging any useful information out of it. He changed the question: Why did you detect that he was dying earlier?
Uh, the health stats were dropping… Eh? That’s weird. It shows as normal now.
Health stats.
Xie Cheng noted the term, his thoughts jumping further. In the original plot, what treasure did Jiang Yi have on him?
It had to be something worth a powerless little streamer risking his life to drive through zombie-infested streets just to run Jiang Yi over.
222: Huh?
Xie Cheng exhaled. Forget it. Regardless, there are too many suspicious things about Xu Le. We can’t let him go. Give me his location.
Uuuh, 222 doesn’t have that function.
Xie Cheng snapped a wooden stick he had just picked up, tossed it aside, and picked up a new one. Useless.
Uwaaaa—
Xie Cheng couldn’t stand 222’s melodramatic crying and muted it without a second thought.
The system couldn’t be relied on; he could only rely on himself. Xie Cheng stuck to his original plan and walked briskly in the direction the tire tracks extended.
While everyone else was asleep, a car and a living zombie had appeared out of thin air inside the wall of fire Jiang Yi had created. It sounded absurd.
Someone was helping Xu Le.
Jiang Yi had checked the perimeter before closing his eyes. What kind of person could hide from his eyes? No, it might not even be a person; it could be something more profound.
“Roar”
Successive roars suddenly drew near, mixed with the sounds of biting, chewing, and swallowing. The sounds were muffled at first, but then they suddenly spiked, exploding right next to Xie Cheng’s ear without warning.
Xie Cheng didn’t move. He judged the positions of the zombies. Just as a zombie with a lolling tongue lunged from behind, cracks appeared in the ground beneath his feet. Thick vines burst out, tightly binding those blood-drenched legs.
Thud!
Thud, thud, thud!
The sounds of heavy impact echoed again.
The scalp-tingling sensation returned.
Jiang Yi, who had rushed over, took a deep breath and stopped in his tracks.
Not far away, Xie Cheng stood among the pack of zombies, swinging the wooden stick in his hand. His posture was elegant, showing no signs of brutality instead, he looked composed, as if he were feeling refreshed after some light exercise.
The name “Xie Cheng” that was about to burst out was swallowed back down, turning into a soft “Xian” Immortal. Jiang Yi clutched the fabric over his chest, trying to calm his racing heart.
Xie Cheng seemed to sense something and turned around.
A gust of wind happened to blow by, brushing a few strands of hair against his blood-stained lips. He just looked at Jiang Yi, frowning slightly.
The emotion in his eyes was easy to read: it was the annoyance of someone whose peace had been disturbed by something disgusting.
Disgusting things? That definitely isn’t me.
Jiang Yi, acting as the “Flower Guardian,” immediately rushed forward. He rubbed his hands together to form fireballs and hurled them out. “Everyone, get lost!”
Rubbing fireballs, throwing.
Throwing fireballs, crashing into them.
Crashing into zombies, panting.
Jiang Yi forcibly carved a path through the zombie pack, and Xie Cheng, who was inside, was gently pushed out of the fray.
Xie Cheng pursed his lips, staring at the little “puppy” who was having a grand time inside. Jiang Yi was baring his teeth at the zombies, his fluffy hair bouncing around, nearly catching fire himself.
In a short while, only charred corpses remained of the zombies.
Jiang Yi lay flat on the ground, exhausted and gasping for air.
“Full of energy,” Xie Cheng walked up, looking down at Jiang Yi and offering a brief evaluation.
Jiang Yi, covered in sweat, nodded vigorously. “Lots of energy, super much energy, plenty of energy! I couldn’t use it all at once. I have great stamina.”
Xie Cheng:
Xie Cheng suspected he was saying something inappropriate.
“It seems you still have strength. Get up.” Xie Cheng reached out with the tip of his foot and tapped Jiang Yi’s arm.
“I don’t want to,” Jiang Yi acted spoiled.
Xie Cheng ignored him. He crouched down on his own, using the previous wooden stick to pry open a zombie’s head. After rummaging around inside, he pulled out a dark little stone. He wiped it against his clothes a few times until it became crystal clear.
Jiang Yi:
“Go pry open the heads of the other zombies.”
Jiang Yi asked in a small voice, “Does the Immortal like to eat these?”
Xie Cheng poked the crystal core with his stick. “You don’t know what this is?”
“I don’t know,” Jiang Yi shook his head honestly.
Back when they were in that little attic, he had seen the Immortal collect many of these things. He hadn’t expected them to be dug out of zombie heads.
Xie Cheng scrutinized him. “Level 3 fire ability. How do you usually level up your power?”
Jiang Yi threw a few punches. “By fighting.”
“Then you’re truly impressive,” Xie Cheng said perfunctorily.
Jiang Yi didn’t catch the sarcasm and started grinning foolishly, even rubbing the back of his head shyly.
“This is a crystal core. Ability users can absorb the energy inside and convert it into their own power,” Xie Cheng explained simply.
Jiang Yi’s eyes widened. “Really?”
He sat up with a clatter and shook Xie Cheng’s arm. “Really, really, really?”
“If you talk any more, I might consider cutting your tongue out,” Xie Cheng glanced at him.
Jiang Yi immediately covered his mouth. With his other hand, he stealthily picked up a crystal core and shoved it into his mouth at lightning speed, muttering, “How do I absorb it? Do I just eat it?”
“Ugh, it seems a bit hard to bite.”
Xie Cheng was startled and shoved him away. “Putting any dirty thing into your mouth… has a dog eaten your brain?”
Jiang Yi spat out the crystal core aggrievedly. “But you wiped this one! It’s not dirty.”
Xie Cheng’s expression remained sour. “Until you clean your mouth, you aren’t allowed to kiss me.”
Leaving those words behind, Xie Cheng distanced himself from this “dirty puppy” and went to dig out more zombie brains.
Tsk, filthy.
*****
“I’ve washed it! It’s super clean!”
Xie Cheng walked in front while Jiang Yi followed behind.
The pockets of Jiang Yi’s clothes were bulging with crystal cores, heavy and swaying with his every step.
“It’s really super clean. I even used breath spray. It’s strawberry flavored.” Jiang Yi paused. “What flavor do you like? There’s also grapefruit, grape, rose, watermelon… so many.”
“Shut up,” Xie Cheng slapped the back of his head.
Jiang Yi hunched his shoulders and lightly bumped Xie Cheng’s arm, his eyes watery as he blinked. “If you don’t believe me, you can try it. Try and see which one you like.”
“Aren’t you annoying?” Xie Cheng glanced at him.
Jiang Yi’s voice got even softer. “I’m not annoying.”
He was very, very well-behaved.
Xie Cheng read the meaning in his eyes. For some reason, a bit of patience stirred within him. He reached out, gripped the back of Jiang Yi’s neck, and pulled him closer. “Be good. Watch the road.”
A visible smile broke across Jiang Yi’s face. “Are we going to find Xu Le? Why are we looking for him?”
“He has some secrets. I want to figure them out.”
“Then” Jiang Yi lowered his head, kicking a few stones on the road away. He continued nervously, “We can go to the Rising Sun Base. He definitely went back there.”
“Oh?”
I’m the captain of the ability squad at Rising Sun Base. I get a lot of resources. I have a standalone villa to live in. There’s an open balcony on the third floor—it’s perfect for sunbathing on sunny days.
Xie Cheng frowned. “What are you trying to say?”
This person was so strange.
Usually, he would chatter non-stop, but in moments like this, he became hesitant and couldn’t finish a sentence.
After a long wait, Jiang Yi finally blurted out with a red face:
“I’m really good at growing flowers!”
