Sliiiice.
That was the sound Jiang Yi had imagined in his head, but in reality, it didn’t happen.
There was no draft in his trousers and Xie Cheng’s hand hadn’t made an ambiguous move from his ankle up to his thigh. Instead, Jiang Yi’s finger had been pricked, and blood quickly welled up. Xie Cheng gripped his hand and, with cold ruthlessness, pressed the bleeding finger against the jade pendant.
Belatedly, Jiang Yi felt a sting of pain. He broke free, scrambled up, and lunged forward to wrap his arms around Xie Cheng’s neck. “Ow, ow, ow! It hurts!”
Xie Cheng patted the back of his head. “Stop yelling.”
“But it really hurts,” Jiang Yi whimpered, clinging to Xie Cheng’s neck like glue while foolishly showing his cut finger to the culprit.
The cut wasn’t large about half the length of a fingernail and the surface was already starting to dry.
Xie Cheng waited quietly for the minor wound to stop bleeding. He slid his palm down Jiang Yi’s bare back and gave him another pat. “It doesn’t hurt anymore. Get off.”
“It does too,” Jiang Yi muttered, reluctant to let go. He nuzzled his head against Xie Cheng’s chin and added, “You have to take responsibility for me.”
“Responsibility?” Xie Cheng repeated the word, which sounded both ridiculous and heavy. His right hand rested on Jiang Yi’s lower back, fingers spread wide as he hoisted the man upward for a better grip.
Leaning against Xie Cheng’s shoulder, Jiang Yi felt his feet dangle for a second. By the time he came to his senses, he had been sat down on the bed.
Xie Cheng leaned in, a faint floral scent brushing past the side of Jiang Yi’s neck. His gaze drifted upward—it was that same familiar look: deep, bottomless eyes with slightly upturned corners.
Jiang Yi instinctively closed his eyes.
“Have a look. Do you feel anything?”
The Immortal’s kiss didn’t land. Instead, a broken jade pendant was shoved into Jiang Yi’s palm.
“What am I supposed to feel?” Jiang Yi was a bit disappointed, but he cooperated with Xie Cheng’s investigation nonetheless.
Xie Cheng: “Anything at all.”
“Then. absolutely nothing,” Jiang Yi answered truthfully.
“Is it not the blood?” Xie Cheng pondered for a moment. He reached out and gently pushed Jiang Yi’s head down. “Give it a lick.”
Jiang Yi looked disgusted. “I don’t want to lick this.”
“Just one lick.”
“Is there a reward?”
Xie Cheng genuinely wanted to know if this was just an ordinary piece of jade. He replied, “There can be.”
A reward!
Satisfied, Jiang Yi lowered his head and poked the tip of his tongue out. While Xie Cheng was still close, he cautiously licked Xie Cheng’s lip before quickly taking a bite of the jade pendant.
“All done!” Jiang Yi lifted his head happily, waiting for the reward for his hard labor.
But the Xie Cheng who made the promise had already distanced himself. He plucked the jade from Jiang Yi’s palm and held it up to the light, examining it closely for a few seconds. Unfortunately, there was still no change.
“It’s not saliva either”
“Xie Cheng!”
The puppy-dog showed his true colors; even his voice lost its usual intentional softness. Jiang Yi bounced off the bed, shook Xie Cheng’s shoulders, and forcefully grabbed the man’s hands to pull him down onto the bed.
The 1.8-meter bed was very soft, causing them to bounce together as they landed. Their foreheads bumped lightly.
Xie Cheng propped himself up, his gaze sweeping over the squirming Jiang Yi. Judging by the man’s rich array of micro-expressions, he knew this person was likely suffering from excess energy again.
“You didn’t keep your word.”
Jiang Yi feigned a few struggles, raising his arms above his head. His eyes were half-veiled, shimmering with unshed tears.
This guy had learned a new skill. Before, he only knew how to act spoiled with a soft voice; now, he could even muster up tears to swirl in his eyes. Those tears, hanging precariously on his lashes, were more heart-melting than a full-blown crying fit. His eyes were red-rimmed, yet the pupils remained clear and bright.
Xie Cheng stared at him for a few seconds. His fingers hooked into Jiang Yi’s belt as he leaned down. His long hair tangled around Jiang Yi’s neck as he planted a kiss on his cheek. “There’s your reward.”
“Reward!”
Jiang Yi’s scheme had worked; a grin quickly curled his lips. The Immortal’s lips were soft and warm, but the contact was too brief. He had done a lot of work today and wanted many rewards this wasn’t enough to satisfy him anymore.
Taking an inch and wanting a mile, Jiang Yi wrapped his arms around Xie Cheng’s waist.
The two of them tumbled into the soft duvet together. The source of heat clinging to him was too much; Xie Cheng reached out to push him away, but Jiang Yi’s head stubbornly burrowed into his chest, leaving his scent behind with his fluffy hair.
Jiang Yi’s kisses ended up all over him.
In just a few moments, Xie Cheng felt overwhelmed. Those “kisses” weren’t really kisses at all; they were more like a large dog’s frantic, disorganized licking and marking. They fell haphazardly on his jaw, the side of his neck, and slid down to his Adam’s apple.
Adam’s apple.
Xie Cheng suddenly clenched his fist. With his other hand, he gripped Jiang Yi’s side, tightening his hold. He didn’t try to push him away again a silent concession.
Jiang Yi looked up at the eye-closing Xie Cheng. He stopped the cautious touching and instead used his fingertips to rub back and forth over Xie Cheng’s collarbone, leaving behind a damp trace.
His hot breath puffed against Xie Cheng’s ear. Jiang Yi’s voice was slurred and clingy. “I like Xie Cheng”
“Phew”
Xie Cheng’s hand moved upward with restraint, covering Jiang Yi’s head and pressing him down into the blankets.
****
Hoo— ha— hoo-hoo-ha—
Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, calmly spreading across a corner of the large bed.
Lying flat on the bed, Xie Cheng suddenly opened his eyes, which held the softness of someone who had just awoken. He slowly pulled the duvet away from his face and took a breath of fresh air.
He didn’t know what was wrong with Jiang Yi, but the man had a habit of tucking people in by pulling the covers right over their heads. Xie Cheng was a frequent victim.
After finally falling asleep last night, this guy started snoring a soft, steady sound that was incredibly annoying. He hadn’t done it before; it likely came on overnight because of his overexertion yesterday.
Xie Cheng sat up and aimed his hand at the part of Jiang Yi’s face peeking out of the covers, giving it a smack. Not too light, not too heavy the usual force they used last night.
Jiang Yi was very familiar with this touch. His mouth smacked a few times as he rolled over, only to find the space beside him empty.
“Hmm?” Jiang Yi murmured, blearily opening his eyes and catching sight of the familiar figure. “Xie Cheng” He spread his arms wide and rolled around. “I want a hug.”
“Get your ass up,” Xie Cheng said, his tone a bit cold.
“Ugh.” The Immortal was so mean when he first woke up.
Jiang Yi dragged himself out of bed, performed a vibrant stretch, and started pacing around the room. He made the bed, then went to fetch clean clothes.
Xie Cheng listened to the noisy footsteps. When he looked up, a clean white shirt was being pulled over his head. Right—he remembered now. His clothes from last night had been torn by a certain someone.
What a spendthrift.
The spendthrift Jiang Yi quickly returned to Xie Cheng’s side with a brand-new wooden comb. He lowered his head, bumping his cheek against Xie Cheng’s. “Can I braid two pigtails for you today?”
Xie Cheng enunciated every word: “No. Braids.”
“But everyone said Xie Cheng looks great with braids,” Jiang Yi said, dragging his squad into it.
“I don’t need to look ‘great’.”
“But braiding it makes it much more convenient.” Jiang Yi bit down on the wooden comb, clenched his fists, and threw a couple of casual punches into the air. “Very handy for fighting zombies!”
Xie Cheng pondered this. It did sound practical.
With the comb back in his hand, Jiang Yi added, “And one more thing! With hair this long, it’ll get tangled and fall out if we don’t braid it.”
Thinking of his frequently tangled hair and the clumps that came out when he brushed it, Xie Cheng said, “Just cut it off.”
“Nooooo!” Jiang Yi wailed.
Xie Cheng: “Hmm?”
“I like your hair!” Jiang Yi hugged the waist-length silver locks. “I’m in charge of your hair; you can’t just cut it.”
Xie Cheng: “…”
“Well. if you really want to cut it” Jiang Yi sniffled. “Fine”
Drama king.
Xie Cheng pursed his lips in resignation. “Braid it.”
Jiang Yi raised his arms. “Heck yeah!”
Xie Cheng didn’t actually mind the braiding. Jiang Yi’s skill with a comb and braids was exceptional; he never pulled at a single knot. Jiang Yi had a natural magic for turning messy hair into something smooth and sleek. Xie Cheng actually quite liked it. Mostly because he wasn’t the one doing the work.
They woke up a bit late this morning. When they finally stepped out of the closed room, they saw the squad standing in a neat row in the small garden, practicing Tai Chi.
Each house in this villa district had its own fence. Last night, Old Qian had used his gold ability to reinforce them several times over enough to keep all low-level zombies out.
Right now, the members of Jiang Yi’s squad were leisurely practicing Tai Chi while, just beyond the barriers, zombies with missing limbs clawed at the fence, snarling and drooling over the “food” inside.
Xie Cheng sat on a stone chair in the garden, and a specialized breakfast prepared by Jiang Yi was quickly placed before him. It was dry bread stuffed with two slices of tomato and a meat patty, drizzled with a special savory sauce. The texture was novel. Xie Cheng took a bite and swallowed it expressionlessly.
“Is your squad always this”
Xie Cheng couldn’t think of the right word. Jiang Yi quickly finished the sentence for him: “Amazing, right? I think so too!”
“No. relaxed.”
They lived every day like they were on holiday.
Jiang Yi looked even happier. “That’s going to be the survival motto of our new base from now on!”
Xie Cheng looked at him. “Are you really going to build a base?”
“Of course.” Jiang Yi stood up and gave a grand sweep of his hand. “With this villa district as the center, we’ll expand outward and take in more people. Oh, and from now on, our base will be called the ‘Immortal Base’.”
“Get lost,” Xie Cheng said, gripping the edge of his iron tray.
“I’m serious! ‘Immortal Base’ it sounds so grand and resonant, doesn’t it?!”
The members of Jiang Yi’s squad nodded in unison, shouting together, “Yes! Immortal Base!”
Xie Cheng: He didn’t want to eat breakfast anymore.
Xie Cheng rubbed his brow. “This villa district doesn’t have walls of steel. Security is a major issue, not to mention food, water, and an ability squad to fend off zombie hordes. Have you thought about any of this?” He tapped the table. “Don’t tell me this is just some half-baked idea you had on a whim.”
“No, I’ve thought it through. I’m not playing around.” Jiang Yi coughed, pulled a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket, stood up straight, and handed it to Xie Cheng.
The paper featured several large, bold characters at the top:
A Formal Request to Establish the Immortal Base
