- Chapter 15 - He is His Flower (15)
The sky outside was a thick, murky grey yellow. The soil, mixed with the dust of rotted vegetation, had crumbled into fine particles that drifted through the air, replacing the atmosphere.
The already cramped car interior had become even more crowded after being stuffed with supplies. Xie Cheng was wedged between two large bundles of dried vegetables, with a massive bag of dry bread blocking his front, leaving him unable to move.
It didn’t matter how bumpy the road was anymore. Even though Jiang Yi’s driving skills remained as abysmal as ever, Xie Cheng’s body stayed pinned and motionless.
“Xie Cheng, if you’re hungry, just poke a hole in any bag. There’s food in all of them.”
Jiang Yi’s tone could barely hide his excitement; he still hadn’t come down from the high of snatching Xie Cheng out of the base.
Xie Cheng struggled to turn his head, the dried vegetables letting out a loud crinkle. He watched Jiang Yi effortlessly spin the steering wheel, even humming a little tune and nodding his head along to the beat.
Hah.
Xie Cheng’s face remained cold. “Jiang Yi, are you sure about this? Just leaving like that? Abandoning the base you worked so hard to build, and your position as the squad leader?”
“Of course.” Jiang Yi spoke enthusiastically about the future. “From now on, we’re the ‘Six Great Heroes,’ pursuing chivalry, freedom, and romance!”
Xie Cheng curled his fingers into a loose fist. “Don’t include me in that.”
“If you really don’t want to be a hero, we can count Xiao Yu’s doll, Bulala, as the sixth one,” Jiang Yi’s voice trailed off, but he suddenly realized something and grew loud again. “Wait, I didn’t mean you’re replaceable! I just meant I respect your opinion, I’m not being disrespectful, I swear, I’m really not”
Another long, rambling explanation followed, delivered in a single breath without so much as a pause for air.
Xie Cheng endured it, not wanting to dig too deep into the subject. He emphasized again, “Are you certain?”
To Xie Cheng, this wasn’t exactly a wise choice. If it were him, he would have ensured those people in the base slept in eternal regret while he reclaimed the stronghold he had poured his blood and sweat into. Whatever death they met would be the punishment they deserved for their sins.
But Jiang Yi didn’t see it that way.
Xie Cheng knew well enough that Jiang Yi wasn’t some overflowing fountain of saintly compassion. He looked carefree on the surface, but he was observant; there were things hidden in his heart that couldn’t be probed just yet.
“Xie Cheng.”
The car slowed to a halt.
Jiang Yi took a deep breath, his body tensing up as he spoke with extreme caution. “During the days you were unconscious, I thought about it for a long time. This is the result of my careful deliberation.”
“If this is your considered answer, I will respect it,” Xie Cheng said.
“And you?” Jiang Yi wrinkled his eyes piteously, reaching out a fingertip to hook onto Xie Cheng’s sleeve. “Will you go back to that broken, disgusting, filthy base?”
He bit down on the words “broken, disgusting, filthy,” deliberately slowing his pace.
Jiang Yi sat up straight, his Adam’s apple bobbing unconsciously. He could hear his own racing heart thumping against his ribs; he felt as though he couldn’t breathe properly.
Xie Cheng’s gaze fell on the man’s tightly pursed lips. Instead of answering directly, he asked, “You practically dragged me into this car, and only now you’re asking me this?”
“I was lightheaded with excitement back then.”
Jiang Yi lowered his head slightly, but then flicked his eyes upward, using that damp, puppy-dog stare to travel up Xie Cheng’s body. The corners of his mouth drooped, even trembling a little.
He continued, picking up the previous thread, “And it wasn’t just a sudden impulse. Before leaving, I scavenged a ton of supplies and filled several cars. I won’t let you go hungry or get cold”
I’ll let you be the freest immortal in the apocalypse.
Jiang Yi didn’t say the last part out loud. He was afraid of getting hit.
Afraid of being hit, Jiang Yi hunched his shoulders.
Xie Cheng stared at him intently.
Supplies?
This guy had the nerve to mention the supplies?
The price for packing the car to the brim was making Xie Cheng sit there like a flattened pancake while he sat beside him enjoying the breeze and singing?
Xie Cheng reached his limit. His fist punched right through a bag of dried vegetables as he brought a palm down hard onto the top of Jiang Yi’s head.

“Immortal Brother, why is the Captain collecting so many crystal cores?”
At nightfall, Jiang Yi’s squad found a small row house to rest in. Yu Yuyu sat on her doll, Bulala, propping her chin on her hands as she looked at the pile of crystal cores that stood half as high as a person, her eyes wide with shock.
Xie Cheng was by the fire, drying his freshly washed hair. He had fished a comb out of Jiang Yi’s backpack and was clumsily tidying his messy long hair, which came out in clumps with every stroke.
“Immortal Brother, does it hurt?”
“It doesn’t. It was meant to fall out anyway.” Xie Cheng spoke with an unfazed face, secretly rolling the pulled hair into a little ball.
“Immortal Brother, it’s so late. Why is the Captain still out digging through zombie brains?” Yu Yuyu asked again.
“He has too much energy and nowhere to spend it.”
Yu Yuyu: “Ooooh”
A moment later, Jiang Yi hauled in a burlap sack full of crystal cores. After unloading his cargo, he leaned over with his hands on his knees, gasping for air.
Yu Yuyu stood up. “Captain, it’s very late. Are you going out again?”
Jiang Yi nodded hesitantly.
Tang Ling, walking past, exposed Jiang Yi’s true motive. “Your Captain wants to build a small base of his own.”
Yu Yuyu:
Old Qian yawned as he passed by. “Yeah, he’s saving up for his dowry.”
Jiang Shui added sneakily as he shuffled past, “You’ll never know how massive the Captain’s ambitions truly are.”
Jiang Yi glared at them huffily.
The passers-by turned a corner and headed toward their assigned rooms, pulling the still-growing Yu Yuyu along with them. The sound of their footsteps faded away.
Once the room was empty, the first-floor living room fell into instant silence. Xie Cheng didn’t want to struggle with his hair anymore; he tossed the comb into the fire and prepared to head upstairs.
As expected, Jiang Yi didn’t hesitate to grab Xie Cheng’s hand. When Xie Cheng turned back, he saw the expected brilliant smile and heard the expected call—
“Xie Cheng!”
Xie Cheng stood with his back to him and stopped.
“I dug up a lot of crystal cores.”
“Mm.”
“I can dig up even more tomorrow.”
“Mm.”
“And the day after, I can dig up even more and more.”
Xie Cheng couldn’t help but let a shallow smile show. “Mm.”
“So”
Jiang Yi moved sluggishly to stand in front of Xie Cheng.
Xie Cheng stared at the sweat-soaked Jiang Yi, thinking the man would probably blush and repeat “I’ll dig up many, many more” over and over again. That was just his way…
Without warning, his fingertips touched a patch of warm skin. Xie Cheng followed the source of the heat.
Jiang Yi had lifted his shirt, shamelessly showing off his sweat-glistening eight-pack abs to Xie Cheng. When their eyes met, he even smiled bashfully.
“You”
Jiang Yi’s ears were bright red. In his most ordinary voice, he asked, “Do you want to do something fun?”
Xie Cheng was silent.
“It’s something most people in the apocalypse love to do,” Jiang Yi emphasized in a high, thin voice.
“You like it too?”
Xie Cheng felt the atmosphere turn strange. The question he blurted out sounded more like an invitation. But that wasn’t his intention at all. Even he felt that. this was somewhat inappropriate.
He was well aware that in the apocalypse, there were many brief flings two people crossing paths, catching each other’s eye, and when night fell, their lips would meet, and neither would care who the other was.
But. he was a decent man. A decent man wouldn’t do anything too out of line.
He did it.
Well, he did half of it.
Because it was Jiang Yi’s turn to keep watch, the room assigned to him wasn’t far; he could reach it in two or three long strides.
Xie Cheng allowed his hand to be held, offering no strong resistance. For one, it was too late to make a scene, and for another, they were used to kissing. As long as they stopped in time, nothing “out of line” would happen.
But Jiang Yi was a master of flirtation.
Xie Cheng had never seen someone so direct. As soon as they entered the room, Jiang Yi stripped off his shirt. The jade pendant hanging from his neck swayed, resting against his heaving chest. The red string holding the jade carved out the lines of his full pectoral muscles, which glistened with a unique sheen under the sweat.
Thud.
Jiang Yi dropped to his knees, tugging at the hem of Xie Cheng’s trousers. When he looked up, his cheeks were flushed a deep crimson.
“Xie Cheng,” Jiang Yi called out softly.
He leaned in closer, his gaze lingering on the space inside Xie Cheng’s loose, well-draped shirt. The soft fabric swayed slightly, outlining a lean waist and a thin, powerful layer of muscle that extended downward. The belt sat right there, and the skin was blindingly white.
Jiang Yi patted his face, which was hot enough to cook on. As if drunk, he pressed his cheek against Xie Cheng’s calf, nuzzling it repeatedly while murmuring words that sounded like a dream.
Xie Cheng’s eyes, cast in shadow, looked exceptionally deep. The faint hint of red at the corners of his eyes looked like a lingering stroke from a painter’s brush—not deep, but enough to provide a breakthrough for the hardworking Jiang Yi.
He saw Xie Cheng’s lips quirk up ever so slightly.
“You really don’t want to?”
Xie Cheng lifted his foot, pressing it neither too lightly nor too heavily against Jiang Yi’s abdomen. His tone was indifferent. “Lie down.”
“What?” Jiang Yi asked dizzily.
“Lie down,” Xie Cheng repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Jiang Yi’s head felt even more lightheaded, but he received the message perfectly. Without a moment’s hesitation, he flipped over and lay straight on the floor. He turned his head to look at Xie Cheng and sluggishly arched his hips. His flexibility was surprisingly good.
A few minutes passed before Xie Cheng moved. He leaned down, his knee pressing into the “two soft loaves of bread” below him. He leaned into Jiang Yi’s ear and whispered, “Are you sure you want to do it here?”
“The floor is nice and cool. It feels good.” Jiang Yi pressed his cheek against the floorboards.
Cool, cool, cool As if hearing his thoughts, Xie Cheng reached out. His fingertips brushed lightly over Jiang Yi’s chest, picking up the red string tied to the jade pendant.
“Where did this jade pendant come from?” Xie Cheng asked suddenly.
Jiang Yi panted, “My grandmother gave it to me.”
Xie Cheng stared at the jade, deep in thought. Like many novels, this pendant was very likely a hidden item perhaps containing a magical space or a spiritual spring. Most people wouldn’t know, but once it was stained with someone’s blood, the pendant would recognize its master.
Xie Cheng rubbed the smooth surface of the jade and poked Jiang Yi’s cheek. “Give me a knife.”
Jiang Yi, lying face down, let out an “ah” and buried his face in the crook of his arm. “Is that how we’re playing? That works too.”
His relaxed muscles tensed up again. He reached into his waistband, pulled out a small knife, and handed it to Xie Cheng.
“Xie Cheng, when you’re cutting my trousers. try not to cut me, okay?”
He was actually a little nervous.
