- Chapter 13 - He is His Flower (13)
“Xiao Le, how did you end up here?”
A strained, hushed voice emerged from a pile of hay. As the wind blew, the dry grass rustled and shook. Since the recent bouts of acid rain, most of the vegetation on the ground had lost its life, withering into a shriveled, parched state.
From a certain perspective, it was still a decent place for a secret tryst.
After all, the best spot had already been claimed by someone clever. Jiang Yi reluctantly pulled away from the corner of Xie Cheng’s mouth, his finger gently pressing against Xie Cheng’s lips.
Shh, don’t say a word.
Xie Cheng glanced toward the hayloft, then shifted his gaze a few inches to the man beside him.
“Be quieter”
Jiang Yi’s nose brushed against Xie Cheng’s ear as he lowered his voice to a whisper. “We have to be even quieter.”
With that, Jiang Yi lightly circled Xie Cheng’s waist and took a few stealthy steps, rounding the tree trunk to hide completely behind it.
Xie Cheng:
Xie Cheng couldn’t understand why they had to hide. Scurrying around a tree like this made it feel as though they were having a scandalous, shameful affair. In reality, they hadn’t done anything particularly over the top.
Jiang Yi’s eyes were wide and round, resembling a large dog whose owner had just taken him for a walk only for him to find something that hit his excitement button. He blinked his shimmering, over excited eyes; judging by his mouth movements, he was silently asking, “What’s wrong?”
The two were pressed tightly together, squeezing out every last bit of air between them. The weather wasn’t exactly freezing, and neither of them was dressed heavily. Leaning against each other like this felt barely different from having no clothes on at all.
However, Xie Cheng’s body felt cold, so Jiang Yi couldn’t help but hold him tighter, trying to transfer his own body heat.
Xie Cheng gave his back a light swat. Moving around like that are you trying to create friction for warmth?
Jiang Yi froze. From Xie Cheng’s angle, he could see the man’s cheeks puffing out slightly.
What now? Are you trying to act cute?
Xie Cheng never fell for that. Never.
Or so he told himself.
After a long moment, Jiang Yi broke into a grin. Seeing that the “Immortal” hadn’t pushed him away, hit him, or scolded him, he buried his face deeper into Xie Cheng’s chest and took a deep breath.
Mmh, a secret affair. How thrilling.
The Immortal’s body was finally warming up.
Movement came from the hayloft again, following up on Xiao Yu’s earlier question. This time, it was Xu Le’s voice: “It’s nothing.”
“Then how did you get hurt like this?” Xiao Yu’s tone was frantic. “Who did this to you?”
A long silence followed with no response.
A slightly guilty Jiang Yi nearly jumped out of Xie Cheng’s arms, tempted to go out and silence them for good.
“I just fell by accident,” Xu Le finally replied, much later.
“Fell? You fell and ended up like this?”
Xiao Yu’s voice rose. He shouted at Xu Le’s retreating back: “Was it Jiang Yi? Did Jiang Yi hurt you?”
In the open environment, Xiao Yu’s shout echoed in layers, drilling into Jiang Yi’s ears.
Jiang Yi was so annoyed that he stepped out from behind the tree. Watching the “he flees, he pursues, he cannot escape” drama play out, he let out a low “awoo” and dove back into Xie Cheng’s arms.
“Don’t be like that,” Xie Cheng said calmly, reaching out to pat Jiang Yi’s head. “After all, we did do those things. It’s hard to argue back.”
We!
Several tufts of Jiang Yi’s fluffy hair stood on end as he nuzzled frantically into Xie Cheng’s embrace.
That’s right, that’s right! It was “us”! We did the bad things together!
Xie Cheng was used to these sudden bursts of excitement. He looked toward where Xiao Yu and Xu Le had disappeared. “Do they always interact like that?”
“Yeah,” Jiang Yi nodded, wrinkling his nose in distaste.
“You really hate them, don’t you?”
Jiang Yi nodded vigorously and began to “report” on them to Xie Cheng. “They’re both annoying, one more hypocritical than the other. Total pests”
He rambled on for quite a while, but Xie Cheng quickly filtered through the keywords and understood the situation.
The establishment of the Rising Sun Base wasn’t something Xiao Yu could have achieved alone. Jiang Yi had poured his heart and soul into helping. Now that the base was stable, Xiao Yu wanted to strip the power from his greatest contributor, even repeatedly sending Jiang Yi’s squad on high-risk missions.
It was a classic case of “killing with a borrowed knife.”
Previously, when Jiang Yi was heavily injured in that attic where Xie Cheng found him, he had been carrying out one of those dangerous assignments.
“Xu Le and Xiao Yu are in cahoots. Does he think I’m an idiot? Acting all fake in front of me and trying to play nice. ugh, I hate it!”
The more Jiang Yi talked, the more aggrieved he felt. His voice softened as he rested his chin on Xie Cheng’s shoulder, sounding for all the world like he was acting spoiled.
He did sound genuinely mistreated. With a whole person bundled in his arms, Xie Cheng softened the strength of the pats on Jiang Yi’s head.
“And…” Jiang Yi took a small sniffle. “Xu Le’s behavior is what you call ‘playing hard to get.'”
“‘Playing hard to get,'” Xie Cheng repeated.
“Of course it is.”
Jiang Yi smoothed his hair on both sides, his cheeks heating up. “I would never be like that. If I like someone, I’ll definitely let them know. I’ll cling to them every day. I’d never be a fake like him”
Jiang Yi took a few breaths and spat out a final word: “Hypocrite.”
Xie Cheng stared at him. The man had used a whole tongue-twister of a speech and still hadn’t quite gotten to the point.
****
With two outsiders added to the group, Jiang Yi suddenly found his sense of direction. The next morning, they got up early to head back to the base.
Watching Jiang Yi floor the accelerator in his eagerness to dump the two “pests” back at the base, Xie Cheng leaned back against the car seat and let out an imperceptible sigh.
Quality of life: down, down, down. Patience for Jiang Yi: up, up, up.
The road was bumpy, and another sudden brake occurred. A cloud of white smoke puffed from the exhaust as the car screeched to a halt.
Patience for Jiang Yi: Whoosh straight down.
Xie Cheng opened his eyes, rubbed the back of his head where it had hit the seat, and glanced at Jiang Yi in the driver’s seat. “Next time, give me a three-kilometer warning. I can’t take these ups and downs.”
Jiang Yi gripped the steering wheel. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I didn’t notice.”
“Notice,” Xie Cheng emphasized the word.
“Okay.”
Jiang Yi fished out a back cushion from somewhere and precisely stuffed it into the gap behind Xie Cheng’s back. He was incredibly attentive.
Once he realized it would be a long drive back to the base, Jiang Yi had prepared thoroughly. In the middle of the night, he had scrounged up a pile of cushions and filled the passenger side with all sorts of soft things.
To Xie Cheng’s left, several bags of dried vegetables hung by the window. The rich aroma of deep-fried greens was quite strong.
Patience for Jiang Yi: Up, up, up.
Xie Cheng exhaled, rummaged through a bag of dried veggies, and picked out a piece of dried carrot to munch on.
“Xie Cheng,” Jiang Yi called out.
Xie Cheng: “What now?”
“About three kilometers ahead, there’s a massive crater. No way around it, so we have to drive straight through the middle. It might be a little bumpy.”
Xie Cheng: Xie Cheng: “Are you telling a joke?”
Jiang Yi shook his head frantically.
A car of similar make pulled up beside them, the window rolled down. Yu Yuyu’s head popped out. “It’s not a joke. Bulala told me.”
The “ugly-cute” ragdoll came into view. Xie Cheng found it absurd, but it seemed that no matter how ridiculous something was, if it happened to this squad, it somehow made sense.
Jiang Yi explained: “Using your method, Xiao Yu’s mental ability has reached Level 2. It’s become a bit. unique.”
As for how it was unique, Jiang Yi didn’t say. It was a secret, especially since they had “outsiders” in the car.
Jiang Yi’s squad had three cars, yet Xiao Yu and Xu Le insisted on squeezing into Jiang Yi’s vehicle. Their entitled attitude made Jiang Yi feel like a bodyguard, which annoyed him greatly.
Xie Cheng was interested in the upgraded mental ability. Seeing the two “dead-fish faces” in the rearview mirror, he flicked his fingers. Several green vines sprouted out of nowhere between the front and back seats.
The tender green vines climbed toward the ceiling, weaving into a thick, gapless net that partitioned the car completely.
“Aren’t you guys taking this a bit too far?!” Xiao Yu shouted from the back.
As soon as he finished, a vine took a sharp turn and pressed against Xiao Yu’s throat in the blink of an eye.
Xie Cheng propped his elbow on the window sill, his curved fingertip tapping lightly. “Can you shut up?”
In the back seat, Xu Le lifted his eyes briefly before lowering them again. He looked lifeless, almost like a corpse. The car fell silent.
Bulala is here.
Xie Cheng heard Yu Yuyu’s voice, but looking through the window, he saw that the boy hadn’t opened his mouth.
Immortal Brother, Bulala is right here.
Yu Yuyu tilted his head against the ragdoll and gave Xie Cheng a thin-lipped smile. Immortal Brother.
Xie Cheng nodded to show he heard him.
The upgraded mental ability can be used like this? No wonder Jiang Yi knew…
Bomp, bomp, bomp.
The car drove into the massive crater. Xie Cheng’s head bumped lightly against the back of his hand.
Jiang Yi’s eyes were full of apology. “There really was no way around it”
How strange.
This was Xu Le’s only thought lately.
Xie Cheng.
He had never heard this name before. It felt like a thorn stuck in his heart. For the first time in a long while, Xu Le felt a sense of unease.
The wish he had made before his previous death had been answered quickly. He now possessed something more miraculous than anything in this world, so he didn’t have to live in fear like before.
But the more he got, the more he wanted. As long as he dealt with the big trouble that was Jiang Yi and got what was in his hands, he could return to how things were before—no, he would be even better.
Another bump. And another. After a series of jolts that nearly threw them out of their seats, Xie Cheng gripped Jiang Yi’s arm tightly.
At this rate, when his patience ran out, he might actually snap Jiang Yi’s arm.
Suddenly, Xie Cheng’s brows knit together. He keenly sensed a wave of malice seeping through.
Screeech!
The tires let out a piercing scream against the rough ground. In a split second of friction, the wheels seemed to melt, forcing the front of the car to plunge forward and downward.
The massive momentum slammed the front-seat passengers forward. Jiang Yi’s eyes turned fierce. He ripped off his seatbelt, pulled out his gun, and leaned halfway out the window to unleash a volley of fire at the zombies outside.
“Yu Yuyu!” Jiang Yi grit his teeth.
Ahead, Yu Yuyu had fainted in the passenger seat of the other car, the ragdoll Bulala falling to the floor.
Xie Cheng grabbed the hem of Jiang Yi’s shirt and pulled him back in. “Focus on the road and drive.”
Jiang Yi took a ragged breath, his muscles tense. He was like a vicious hound on a leash, forcing his rage down to listen to his master.
Xie Cheng patted Jiang Yi’s shoulder, his attention fixed entirely on the zombies in front of the car.
Bang!
“I’ll handle the zombies outside”
A muffled groan followed.
A violent crash exploded beside his ear. Something with brute force smashed through the car window, sending glass shards flying everywhere.
A rotting, bloody hand reached inside. Xie Cheng glanced down at the fresh scratches on his arm and, with an expressionless face, snapped the hand in two.
