- Chapter 12 - He is His Flower (12)
The silent night pressed down like a suffocating net. Xu Le ran until he was out of breath, ghostly hands constantly reaching out from behind to chase him.
He didn’t feel like he had run very far when, at a corner separated by those ghostly hands, he saw that familiar car again. He was still within the temporary camp of Jiang Yi’s squad.
The camp was in an open area with few buildings for cover. Several cars had been parked in a circle around the central fire, serving as a makeshift “fence.”
Atop the outer perimeter of this fence, Xie Cheng stood tall. He stepped on blurry shadows, held high by those same ghostly vines that had been chasing Xu Le.
Immortal New Lead! The Protagonist looks like he’s about to be scared to death. His health stats have dropped to 63. That’s weird why the sudden plunge?
222 muttered, The Protagonist Sh受 really is just a kind-hearted little streamer; he’s so easily frightened.
Xie Cheng was skeptical about the “kind-hearted” part. Did you detect anything on him?
Nothing. Everything seems normal.
Is that so?
Xie Cheng remained suspicious. This protagonist was behaving very oddly.
Immortal New Lead, the romance plot between the two leads hasn’t been filled in yet. They can’t die.
Relax, he won’t die.
Xie Cheng was simply becoming impatient with this “lab rat” who kept trying to escape. If he wasn’t going to be obedient, a little scare might teach him a lesson.
Immortal New Lead, why keep the Protagonist around anyway? How does it help the mission?
Xie Cheng watched the “rat” scurrying below. Didn’t you say the protagonists share a natural attraction? If we have one, the other will show up soon enough.
We could just go look for him.
Xie Cheng countered: Why bother looking?
Uh. 222 was speechless.
Since entering this world, Xie Cheng’s interest in the missions had been lukewarm at best, his attitude bordering on indifferent.
Well, it was understandable. After all, the “Immortal New Lead” had been forced into the Romance Division. He was supposed to be on holiday, yet he was dragged back to work by the new department’s staff. Anyone in that position would lack professional enthusiasm.
But. this was Xie Cheng! The man known as the greatest “overachiever” in the realm!
According to his usual style, shouldn’t he have tied both protagonists up on day one, locked them in a room, and only let them out once they’d fallen in love?
222 didn’t dare say this out loud, only stealing glances at Xie Cheng’s face. The latter was idly moving his fingertips, shifting the positions of the vines with casual interest.
To this day, 222 still didn’t understand the connection between being a flower and having plant-type abilities. Does being a flower naturally grant control over all plants?
222 didn’t know, didn’t dare ask, and didn’t dare speak. It retreated submissively to the system space to lie down.
BOOM.
A massive explosion shattered the silence. 222 jumped off its little bed in the system space and peered through the monitor.
Xie Cheng, who had been standing on high, was gone.
A large crater had opened in the ground. Several vines that had sprouted from the earth were limp and withered on the cracked pavement, having been attacked.
A dark, human-shaped shadow leaped out of the pit, swinging a massive fist toward Xie Cheng, who had suddenly appeared in front of him.
AAAAAH! 222 shrieked.
Blinding sparks danced around Xie Cheng, illuminating his calm profile. A moment later, his waist-length silver hair was caught in a violent surge of airflow.
A fist wrapped in electric current tore through the air, moving so fast it was a mere blur.
Xie Cheng stood his ground, not moving an inch. He raised his hand and caught the fist with effortless ease.
There was no fear, no contempt, no ripple of emotion. Xie Cheng’s eyes lifted slightly, his gaze as still as a frozen pond in late autumn.
The power of a Level 4 ability user turned into a frozen lake in his palm, shattering into pieces.
As his long hair settled back down, Xie Cheng calmly retracted his hand and lightly dusted off his sleeves.
Immortal New Lead, how did you do that?
Probably because plants aren’t very good conductors of electricity.
222:
222 swallowed its non-existent saliva and read out the new prompt: Both Protagonists are present. Recommended Romance Ending Unlocked: “True Love Found in Hardship.” Current progress: 23%.
****
“Jiang Yi is a madman.
After he betrayed Xiao Yu, he quickly seized power in the Rising Sun Base. But he didn’t stop there; he even wanted to throw Xiao Yu to the zombies.
I’m so scared, and I regret everything. Maybe I really was wrong. I shouldn’t have thought about revenge, shouldn’t have told Jiang Yi those things to make him target Xiao Yu.
I think I still love him.”
After the recommended ending was unlocked, more plot details were fleshed out. 222 read them with great drama, concluding: Human nature is so complex and sensitive; that’s what makes their love feel so real.
According to the recommended ending, the Protagonist Gong (Xiao Yu) falls from grace, and only the Protagonist Xu Le stays by his side. Through their mutual efforts, they return to the top.
Xie Cheng:
In the supplementary plot, Jiang Yi is a traitor who pushed his own brother into a zombie hoard. After the Protagonist Gong regains power, Jiang Yi is reviled by everyone, eventually flees the base, and dies surrounded by zombies.
222 emphasized the word “traitor.” It cleared its throat. This is the story from the protagonist’s perspective. We don’t know if there’s a hidden truth, but Jiang Yi is undoubtedly a dangerous figure.
Xie Cheng glanced at the “idiot king” Jiang Yi, who was currently leaning on his shoulder.
This is a dangerous figure?
Sensing Xie Cheng’s gaze, Jiang Yi brushed his bangs aside. His cheek slid down Xie Cheng’s shoulder as he nuzzled against Xie Cheng’s hand.
“Xie Cheng, is your hand hurt?”
Without waiting for an answer, Jiang Yi naturally took Xie Cheng’s hand, focusing intensely on finding a few tiny scratches on the back of it.
“Xiao Yu, what is wrong with you?” Jiang Yi suddenly sat up straight, eyes rounding as he glared at Xiao Yu, who was tending to his own wounds across the fire. “You don’t know your own strength!”
Xiao Yu. was quite badly hurt.
He had followed the markers Xu Le left, encountered zombies on the way, and then arrived here only to be thrashed by Xie Cheng’s vines.
Xiao Yu grit his teeth, his gaze moving to Jiang Shui, who was sitting next to Jiang Yi. Jiang Shui was a healer—the hint was obvious. But Jiang Shui kept his head down, appearing half-asleep.
Covered in wounds, Xiao Yu’s tone was sharp. “Jiang Yi, who gave you permission to speak to me like that?”
“Am I wrong?” Jiang Yi frowned, his voice cold. “You’re a Level 4, yet you fought so recklessly that you hurt my Xie Cheng.”
Jiang Yi held Xie Cheng’s hand out as evidence.
Xiao Yu trembled with rage. But he stayed silent. The stranger next to Jiang Yi had unpredictable strength definitely superior to his own. In the apocalypse, people always bullied the weak and feared the strong.
Xie Cheng remained silent throughout, observing the two “protagonists.”
Xiao Yu was like an agitated lion, tearing at his clothes to bandage himself. Meanwhile, Xu Le—who was supposed to be a devoted “simp” in the original plot just sat there in silence, not even sparing Xiao Yu a glance.
Within a few moments, Xiao Yu couldn’t stand the neglect and tried to talk to Xu Le, but Xu Le continued to ignore him. The former playboy had become a devoted man, while the former “simp” had become a “cold beauty.”
Interesting.
Xie Cheng pulled 222 out. You said earlier the Protagonist Gong had a system?
The “Post-Apocalyptic Survival System,” 222 answered.
Can you detect it now?
Actually. I can’t.
Never mind. Go back.
222 retreated. Xie Cheng pondered the mysterious system. The “gold finger” the Heavenly Dao gave the protagonist wasn’t on Xiao Yu. It felt more like it was on someone else.
A puff of warm air hit his ear, interrupting his thoughts. Feeling a tingle, he grabbed Jiang Yi’s wrist. “What are you doing now?”
Jiang Yi blinked, staying very close. His lips brushed against Xie Cheng’s earlobe without restraint. He whispered, “Don’t you find this boring?”
He used his head to shield the movement so no one else could see. He invited Xie Cheng quite earnestly: “It’s dull here. Want to go for a walk?”
*****
The dawn was breaking, but the sky looked like ink diluted by water misty and dim.
Behind a rare, intact tree, two sets of clothes were tangled together. Xie Cheng’s back was against the trunk, and Jiang Yi was pressed firmly against his front.
Their silhouettes were blurred in the twilight.
Jiang Yi had his head down, his forehead rubbing against Xie Cheng’s neck before he looked up to kiss the corner of Xie Cheng’s mouth. He started patiently, but soon grew more urgent.
Xie Cheng kept his eyes open the whole time, remaining composed. His fingers moved to the back of Jiang Yi’s neck, applying light pressure and then massaging it slowly.
Jiang Yi’s breathing grew heavy. He didn’t dare move too wildly, keeping his actions within the boundaries Xie Cheng allowed.
“Xie Cheng”
A few tears squeezed from the corners of Jiang Yi’s eyes. He leaned against Xie Cheng, panting, his hand moving to the tree trunk to cushion the back of Xie Cheng’s head.
“Hmm?”
Xie Cheng’s voice sounded satisfied. His lashes were half-lowered, unable to hide the comfort blooming in his eyes.
To Jiang Yi, this was an incredibly intimate moment. He tried to steady his breathing, staring unblinkingly to memorize the look. “I Have improved?”
Improved?
Meeting Jiang Yi’s greedy eyes, Xie Cheng’s brows arched into a rare smile. He pinched the back of Jiang Yi’s neck and replied unhurriedly:
“Good boy, Jiang Yi. You have improved.”
“Then. Should we practice more often?” Jiang Yi grinned foolishly, enunciating every word.
Xie Cheng tilted his head, considering it. “We could.”
After all, the progress was significant.
