- Chapter 11 - He is His Flower (11)
“Aaaaaah!”
“Aaah~ aaah~ aaaaaah!”
The roars of the zombie and the screams of a human mingled together, rising and falling, drifting close and then far away. Yu Yuyu gripped the heads of both the zombie and Xu Le, stubbornly trying to shove them together.
Push them together, pull them apart, push them together again…
Jiang Yi glanced over occasionally, looking quite gratified. “That’s nice. Xiao Yu found a new toy.”
Xie Cheng looked on from the side, his slender fingers idly spinning the polished black pistol. He didn’t respond to Jiang Yi. His searching gaze landed on Xu Le, his eyes dark with thought.
He didn’t sense any ability fluctuations from Xu Le.
In the original plot, Xu Le was a rare Space-type user who hoarded a massive amount of supplies in the early days of the apocalypse. Being naturally “kind-hearted,” he often distributed these supplies, winning him high prestige and, to an extent, helping the Protagonist Gong become a so-called “Saviour” and hero.
Had he just not awakened his ability at this point yet?
“Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng! What are you thinking about?”
Jiang Yi’s face suddenly zoomed into Xie Cheng’s personal space. He blinked his innocent, round eyes, even making an effort to widen them further. “Xie Cheng, are you mad at me?”
“Why would I be mad at you?”
“Because I didn’t notice that Level 3 zombie earlier. Not only did I miss it, but I was also making a lot of noise.”
Jiang Yi’s voice softened. Remembering Xie Cheng’s earlier remark, he held up three fingers. “I’ve reflected deeply. I will never let my guard down like that again.”
“Why are you apologizing to me for something like that?”
Jiang Yi muttered under his breath, “I just want to be a very, very, very reliable person in your eyes.”
Xie Cheng didn’t catch that. “What?”
“Nothing, nothing!” Jiang Yi cleared his throat. “Actually, it’s not that I let my guard down. I really just didn’t expect a high-level zombie to show up all on its own.”
Noticing that Xie Cheng was listening patiently, Jiang Yi continued, “If zombies have become a new species, then a hierarchy must have formed. The appearance of a high-level zombie usually means a large following of low-level zombies would be swarming around it, making a lot of noise.”
Yet, Xiao Yu hadn’t sensed anything prior to its arrival.
Xie Cheng roughly understood Jiang Yi’s point. “You think the appearance of this Level 3 zombie is strange.”
Jiang Yi grinned and nodded frantically.
“And what do you think the reason is?”
“I don’t know,” Jiang Yi admitted, his face falling.
Xie Cheng leaned his back against a protruding rock and patted the ground beside him, gesturing for Jiang Yi to sit before asking: “Under what circumstances would you leave your team?”
“Hmm” Jiang Yi thought seriously. “If I encountered danger and didn’t want to drag the others down.”
“And what else?”
“If I found some amazing treasure and knew I’d lose it if I didn’t chase it immediately.”
Xie Cheng spoke casually. “Then which case do you think applies to this zombie?”
“Uh”
“If zombies are a species now, they must follow the law of the jungle. I don’t think they’re the type to protect their comrades,” Xie Cheng said.
“Treasure!” Jiang Yi blurted out.
His body began to squirm with excitement, his eyes lighting up as they scanned every corner. He started whispering to himself, “What kind of treasure could it be?”
Xie Cheng glanced at him. “Stop looking.”
Jiang Yi looked up. “Huh?”
“It’s me.”
Jiang Yi went and gave that Level 3 zombie a thorough beating.
Every punch hit home. There was no sign of his previous melancholy or the sentiment that “zombies were once our kind.”
Xie Cheng was baffled.
The appearance of this Level 3 zombie made him realize how much of a liability his true form as a flower was. This body was like a natural tonic, an irresistible lure for zombies. His intention in telling Jiang Yi was to make him weigh the pros and cons—to decide if he still wanted to stick with such a magnet for trouble.
But. Jiang Yi seemed to have taken it as a massive provocation. He marched toward the zombie with an aggressive aura, ground his heel into half of the zombie’s head, and started raining down punches.
Yet his eyes were red and his lips were tightly pursed, an air of grievance slipping through his tough exterior.
Wait, what is he feeling aggrieved about?
It made no sense.
Xie Cheng tugged at a few tangled strands of his hair. It pulled at his scalp, making him wince. Lacking patience, he stuck his fingers into the knots and simply gave a hard yank, tearing out several clumps of hair.
The sound of several sharp intakes of breath reached his ears.
Xie Cheng looked up to find all five of them staring at him.
Including the ragdoll in Yu Yuyu’s arms.
The group shuffled awkwardly, bumping shoulders until finally, Old Qian, being the eldest, stepped forward. He took a deep breath and said, “The Captain already told us.”
Told you. what?
That I attract zombies?
Usually, when normal people find out about a “trouble magnet” like that, they stay as far away as possible.
“Don’t be sad,” Old Qian added.
Xie Cheng: “?”
After Old Qian spoke, the others visibly relaxed.
Jiang Shui rubbed his red hair and pumped his fist in an encouraging gesture. “Yeah! No need to be so pessimistic. It’s just a few zombies.”
Tang Ling handed over a brand-new butterfly knife. “Just finished sharpening it. Use it for self-defense.”
Yu Yuyu didn’t say anything, but he shoved his ragdoll into Xie Cheng’s arms. After a moment, he whispered, “Bulala will protect you and make sure you have good dreams every night.”
“Hahaha.” Old Qian laughed awkwardly, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Actually, we were just worrying about not being able to find enough zombies to level up our abilities. You’ve arrived at the perfect time!”
The others burst into applause.
Xie Cheng: A bunch of idiots.
After the “idiots” finished their nonsensical speeches and left, the King of Idiots—who had finished beating the zombie appeared.
Holding a crystal-clear core in his wet hand, he lunged forward, skidding to a halt right in front of Xie Cheng. His voice was soft and pleading. “Xie Cheng, this is for you.”
Xie Cheng didn’t take it.
Jiang Yi’s tone became even more dramatic. “It’s already been cleaned. I washed it several times.”
“You dug out that zombie’s brain?”
Jiang Yi’s face hardened, looking quite serious. “Xie Cheng, you were right. We aren’t the same kind as zombies. When we meet them, we have to show no mercy.”
“There’s no need to go that far. forget it, do what you want.”
As he spoke, Xie Cheng raised his hand slightly. Almost instantly, a fluffy head rubbed into his palm. He hesitated for a moment before giving Jiang Yi’s head a light pat.
Jiang Yi’s head swayed under the touch. He picked up the crystal core in his mouth, knelt on the ground in a strange posture, and then tilted his head to rest it on Xie Cheng’s knees.
Xie Cheng felt a sudden weight on his lap.
As he looked down, his tangled silver hair slid off his shoulder, brushing against Jiang Yi’s brow. This man had decided all on his own to use Xie Cheng’s knees as a pillow, his arms loosely circling Xie Cheng’s legs. He blinked softly, looking perfectly at peace.
Xie Cheng was momentarily stunned. He was usually a man of absolute composure, but he was rarely caught off guard by such sudden intimacy.
He felt a slight instinctive rejection of the feeling.
“Get up.”
“Just let me lie here for a little bit. Fighting zombies is so, so tiring,” Jiang Yi wheedled in a soft voice.
Clatter
The crystal core fell onto Xie Cheng’s lap.
A gift. That was the first word that popped into Xie Cheng’s mind. Like a puppy that goes out and brings back the best thing it can find for its master.
He’s actually quite well-behaved…
“Can I? Please?” When Jiang Yi didn’t get a response, he reluctantly lifted his head from Xie Cheng’s lap to check his expression.
His gaze climbed upward, cautious and searching. Xie Cheng’s face was calm, but when those indifferent eyes met his, the tips of Jiang Yi’s ears instantly turned red.
Wow, the Immortal is so beautiful.
Jiang Yi unconsciously held his breath, quietly lowered his head again, and happily went back to using Xie Cheng’s lap as a pillow.
The “beautiful” Xie Cheng still didn’t say a word, but his silence was an answer in itself. He didn’t move, allowing his long silver hair to rest against Jiang Yi’s face—a silent form of indulgence.

System, give me a small knife.
In the middle of the night, while everyone else was fast asleep and Jiang Yi was out on patrol, Xu Le opened his eyes and woke the sleeping system in his mind—the Post-Apocalyptic Survival System.
One small knife. Cost: 10 Contribution Points.
Xu Le grit his teeth. His body was covered in bruises from escaping zombies. At the thought of his suffering, his eyes overflowed with hatred. Buy it.
Apologies, Savior No. 1 Your Contribution Point balance is insufficient. Please earn points as soon as possible.
Xu Le remembered now; he had spent everything to escape that building. But he was trapped here with no resources how was he supposed to get points?
Put it on credit first, Xu Le exhaled.
Apologies, Savior No. 1. This system does not currently support credit. the system replied coldly.
Then what am I supposed to do?
The system paused. Savior No. 1 can exchange Health points or Beauty points for Contribution points.
Exchange them. Xu Le struggled on the ground. Use Health points.
The system didn’t try to persuade him, nor was there any warning during the process. Xu Le simply felt his bruises throb with pain. A moment later, a plain-looking knife appeared in his hand.
The blade was sharp, easily slicing through the thick ropes. Xu Le let out a sigh of relief, cursed the members of Jiang Yi’s squad under his breath, and scrambled to his feet.
The night wind was cold, making a sound like a low wail as it blew. Xu Le rubbed his arms and tiptoed away.
Then, a cold voice rang out without warning.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t expose my trump card without being absolutely certain of the outcome.”
The thick darkness seemed to seize Xu Le by the throat. Hearing that all too familiar voice, his body shook involuntarily, and his teeth began to chatter.
Time seemed to freeze. After a long while, Xu Le stiffly turned around.
A breeze swept past, lifting Xie Cheng’s somewhat messy long hair. He stood there silently, tall and lean. His new white shirt was loose, the hem fluttering and revealing glimpses of a firm torso.
His skin was pale a cold, almost translucent white that, in the dim light, made his features look even deeper and more defined. He was quietly watching Xu Le with a gaze that felt heart-stoppingly scrutinizing.
Xie Cheng casually rolled his wrist. “Tell me. what exactly were you talking to just now?”
An invisible pressure spread through the air, surging from all directions like a biting, icy tide.
Only one thought remained in Xu Le’s mind.
Run.
