- Chapter 1 - The Dream: A Melodramatic Scumbag Alpha and Cheap Omega Novel
“Yun Xi, when are you and your boyfriend coming over?”
As the city lights began to flicker on along the most bustling street in B City, Yun Xi leaned against his car door. He stared at the passing traffic while listening to the voice on the other end of the line.
Pedestrians passing by could not help but let their gaze linger on his face for a few seconds. Yun Xi was long accustomed to the attention; his eyes remained fixed expectantly on the road, waiting for Gu Xun’s car.
“I will be there soon. You guys go ahead and start without me,” he said.
After hanging up, Yun Xi hopped in place, trying to increase his body temperature. The temperature had dropped suddenly over the past few days, and a biting chill had set in now that night had fallen. It was fine to stay indoors with the heating, but in a moment of madness, he had insisted on waiting for Gu Xun outside the club.
Yun Xi huffed a breath of warm air into his palms and called Gu Xun again. There was still no answer.
The temper he had been suppressing for so long began to flare up again. Yun Xi quickly reined himself in, mentally reminding himself that patience was key. Once he calmed his nerves, he sent Gu Xun a voice message in a soft, gentle tone.
“Gu Xun, today is my birthday. Why are you not here yet? I have already told my friends I would introduce my boyfriend to them today. If you do not show up, I will lose so much face.”
A few minutes after the message was sent, Gu Xun replied with two icy words: “I am busy.”
Yun Xi felt a surge of frustration. “Calm down, stay calm. He is just not good at expressing himself. Like hell he isn’t!”
Yun Xi kicked the lamppost despondently. “They said we have a 100% compatibility rate and that we are fated partners. Why can I not see a trace of it at all?”
Yun Xi used to dismiss all talk about compatibility as nonsense. He had met Alphas with whom he shared an 80% compatibility rating and, without exaggeration, his heart felt absolutely no spark. That changed when he met Gu Xun.
A little over a month ago, Yun Xi went skiing in Country G and was unfortunate enough to get caught in an avalanche. Just as he was buried under the snow, fearing for his life, Gu Xun dug him out. At that time, Yun Xi’s consciousness was fading; he could only remember the faint woody scent clinging to Gu Xun. When he woke up and opened his eyes, he saw Gu Xun taking off his goggles, frowning as he asked if he was alright.
He did not know if it was the “bridge effect,” but for the first time in his life, Yun Xi felt his heart skip a beat. As a rare S-class Omega, Yun Xi had always been pursued. From childhood to adulthood, the Alphas, Betas, and even Omegas who confessed to him were too many to count. Naturally, Yun Xi assumed that as long as he gave a little sign, he could smoothly begin his first relationship with Gu Xun.
However, that was not the case. Gu Xun was cold. He simply stated he had no intention of dating and tried to brush Yun Xi off.
Being rejected for the first time was such a novel experience for Yun Xi that it only made him more interested. After returning home, he consulted his circle of friends and searched for pursuit guides online, determined to win Gu Xun over. After a month of persistence, he finally succeeded in making Gu Xun his boyfriend.
Yet, even after they got together, Gu Xun’s attitude did not change much. He remained distant. For every three sentences Yun Xi spoke, Gu Xun would reply with one, and that one sentence rarely exceeded five words.
“Is he frigid?” Yun Xi touched the scent-blocking patch on the back of his neck, muttering to himself. “My heat is coming up soon. Let us see how reserved you stay then.”
He was looking forward to seeing if the pheromone influence of a fated partner was truly as miraculous as the rumors suggested. His friends called again to urge him, so Yun Xi took a deep breath and entered the club.
“The protagonist has finally arrived!” someone shouted.
Another person noticed no one was behind Yun Xi and asked, “Yun Xi, did you not say you were bringing your Alpha today? Where is he?”
“He had something come up at the last minute, so he could not make it. Let us just play for now.”
Upon hearing this, murmurs broke out in the private room.
“That is too much. What could be more important than Yun Xi’s birthday?”
“Exactly. That kind of Alpha clearly does not know how to cherish an Omega. If you ask me, Alphas are all like that. If you want someone who truly cares, you need a Beta.”
“Get lost! Can a Beta satisfy an Omega?”
“Quiet, do not say those things in front of Yun Xi.”
Yun Xi rolled his eyes. Just as he was about to find a seat to rest, he noticed the door to the room being pushed open again. Thinking it was Gu Xun, a look of joy appeared on Yun Xi’s face. He turned around, but his expression immediately soured.
“Bai Jingchen, what are you doing here?”
The newcomer was carrying a paper bag as he walked in. “We have known each other for so many years. I am just here to give you a birthday present.”
It was a rare sight. The two had grown up together, but their relationship was terrible. Since they were young, Bai Jingchen loved to compete with him, though he unfortunately lost at everything and often did stupid things to sabotage him. Lately, for some unknown reason, he had not caused any trouble until today, when he showed up uninvited.
Yun Xi raised his eyebrows high, accepting the paper bag as if it were a biochemical weapon. He said bluntly, “Thanks, but you did not put something weird in here again, did you? The last time you gave me a fake watch, I gave it back during your younger brother’s birthday. He actually wore it out and made a fool of himself. So, have you managed to coax your brother back into a good mood yet?”
Yun Xi’s lips curled into a mocking smile, and laughter instantly erupted in the room. Recalling the time he had shot himself in the foot, Bai Jingchen’s face tightened.
He gritted his teeth and said, “Keep laughing. I will wait to see if you can still laugh tomorrow.”
“Oh?” Yun Xi sat down leisurely. “What, are you going to hire someone to put a sack over my head and beat me tomorrow?”
“Hmph, I will not need to lift a finger,” Bai Jingchen said contemptuously. “Besides, are you not with Gu Xun now? Why did he not even show up to your birthday party? It seems he does not like you that much.”
“Whether he likes me or not, he is still with me, is he not?” Yun Xi crossed his legs and blinked slowly at Bai Jingchen. “You are caring so much about my love life. Do you have a secret crush on me?”
Bai Jingchen stared at Yun Xi’s beautiful, smiling face. He was dazed for a moment before abruptly turning away. “Are you sick? You even try to seduce Omegas?”
Yun Xi burst out laughing, thoroughly amused. “I did not do a thing. As for what was going on in your head just now, who knows?”
Shame and anger flushed across Bai Jingchen’s face. Seeing everyone else in the room watching him like a side-show, his annoyance peaked.
“Just you wait!” He threw out his usual parting threat. He opened the door to leave but suddenly remembered something. A malicious smile played on his lips. “By the way, remember to open the gift I gave you.”
Yun Xi waved his hand as if shooing a fly. “Give it up. Even if you give me a gift, I will not agree to be with you.”
“You!” Bai Jingchen wanted to turn back for another round of arguing, but thinking of what would happen tomorrow, he forced himself to endure. He pointed at Yun Xi and slammed the door as he left.
Without the entertainment of Bai Jingchen, the rest of the party was incredibly boring for Yun Xi. He spent the entire time drinking. His tolerance was not great, but he was a well-behaved drunk. He did not flush easily, so by the time it ended, no one realized he was intoxicated.
After seeing off his friends, Yun Xi stood by the roadside, letting the wind clear his head while waiting for a driver. After a while, the wind picked up. Yun Xi shivered, let out a yawn, and started walking back toward the club entrance. After a few steps, he sensed something and looked toward the road.
A familiar Maybach approached. Yun Xi’s watery eyes lit up, and he stepped toward the curb, waving at the car. “Gu Xun!”
The Maybach sped past. The cold wind slapped Yun Xi’s face, making him shudder. He tilted his head slowly, looking suspiciously at the car as it distanced itself from him. Did he see wrong?
Before he could doubt if his eyes were playing tricks, the car made a U-turn at the intersection ahead and quickly pulled up in front of him. He must have accidentally overshot, Yun Xi thought, his happiness returning. He walked to the driver’s side and knocked on the window.
The window rolled down, revealing Gu Xun’s sharp, cold features. Yun Xi’s eyes crinkled with a smile. “I knew you would come. It is a pity my friends just left; otherwise, I could have introduced you.”
“I do not need to know those trust fund brats,” Gu Xun said coldly. “Is there something? If not, I am leaving.”
Yun Xi was stunned. “Today is my birthday.”
Gu Xun interrupted impatiently, “And?”
Yun Xi bit his lip. Because of the alcohol, he could not formulate a response immediately. Gu Xun glanced at Yun Xi’s slightly flushed face and looked away. He had originally planned to announce their breakup today in front of Yun Xi’s group of friends, but he had not expected Yan Qing to return to the country. To make it to the airport for the pickup, Gu Xun had to abandon his original plan.
He let out a silent sneer. “Omegas are so troublesome. Happy birthday. Are we done?”
But Yun Xi was not satisfied. “You have not given me a gift yet.”
“Whatever you want, tell my assistant.”
“No, that is different.” Yun Xi frowned slightly. Suddenly, he noticed a bouquet of exquisite flowers on the passenger seat next to Gu Xun. His eyes lit up. “The flowers, they are for me, right?”
A flash of complex emotion crossed Gu Xun’s eyes. “No, they are for someone else. Hurry up, I have to go.”
Yun Xi was disappointed. He tried hard to recall scenes from TV dramas and online posts. “Then kiss me. Or I can kiss you. I just want that as my gift.”
As the words fell, Gu Xun froze. His eyes flickered toward the rearview mirror inside the car, and he barked, “Frivolous! Move aside, I am leaving.”
Yun Xi was dazed by Gu Xun’s harsh tone. Seeing Gu Xun’s dark expression and fearing he might actually get run over, he stepped back and made way. Watching the car disappear into the distance, Yun Xi stood blankly by the roadside. His slow brain eventually thought that it was strange how mean Gu Xun was today. Also, it seemed like someone was sitting in the back seat of Gu Xun’s car.
Before the cold wind could snap him out of it, the driver arrived. Yun Xi did not get rowdy when he was drunk; he just became slower than usual and easily sleepy. Once in the car and surrounded by warmth, Yun Xi became even more drowsy. By the time he reached home, he could not even think about Gu Xun. He hastily tidied himself up, flopped onto the bed, and fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, the bedroom curtains blocked out all light, leaving the room in dimness. On the nightstand, a phone vibrated and shrieked incessantly, determined to pull its owner out of sleep. After a long time, just as the call was about to end, a hand reached out from under the covers and answered.
Taking a few seconds to shake off the remnants of sleep, Yun Xi opened his eyes irritably and glanced at the caller ID: Gu Xun.
“Hello?” He rubbed his aching temples from the hangover and suppressed his morning grumpiness. He said in a soft voice, “Calling your boyfriend so early in the morning. Do you regret not accepting my kiss yesterday?”
There was a long silence on the other end before a sentence was uttered. “Yun Xi, let us talk.”
“What? Talk about what?”
Gu Xun’s voice was cold. “Let us have dinner tonight. You pick the place.”
With that, without waiting for Yun Xi to ask more, he decisively hung up. Yun Xi stared blankly at his phone for a long time. His groggy head slowly cleared, and at the same time, a strange feeling washed over his heart.
He felt as though he had had a dream. In the dream, he was sitting in a room that looked like a study, flipping through a book. The title of the book was A Melodramatic Scumbag Alpha and Cheap Omega Novel. And the two protagonists in the book were named Yun Xi and Gu Xun.
