The Alpha’s Hidden Marriage, Public Obsession - Chapter 70
While Jiang Xue was on the phone with Chu Yuan in the bedroom, Lin Yulan happened to be standing outside the door. Hearing Jiang Xue still insist on going to Melbourne, she froze in place.
She had thought that after the incident with Xia Yin, Jiang Xue would surely give up on the Melbourne opportunity after all, there was no guarantee that lunatic Xia Yin wouldn’t take advantage of the situation to target Jiang Xue again. But Lin Yulan never expected that, even so, Jiang Xue remained determined to go.
Standing outside the bedroom door for a long while, Lin Yulan felt a sourness in her chest. She wanted to barge in and demand why Jiang Xue was so set on going, but in the end, she feared crossing Jiang Xue’s bottom line. Instead, she decided to go downstairs and sit for a while, planning to probe Jiang Xue’s thoughts indirectly later.
But just as she was about to turn away, Jiang Xue stepped out of the bedroom.
“Were you eavesdropping on me?”
Lin Yulan’s mind raced, and she immediately retorted, “I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop on your call. I just came up to see if you’d changed clothes yet and happened to catch you on the phone.”
“Really?”
“Absolutely true!”
Jiang Xue couldn’t be bothered to press the issue. Whether Lin Yulan had eavesdropped or not didn’t matter, what she wanted to do, not even ten Lin Yulans could stop her.
She said, “The school administration has finalized the arrangements. I’ll be leaving for Melbourne in three days. The reason I’m telling you is so you understand whether I go or not has nothing to do with Xia Yin’s involvement in this project.”
“But she has ill intentions toward you!” Lin Yulan raised her voice. “She’s capable of doing something like that, do you really think she’d back down just because I taught her a lesson? Last time, at least it was in the country, but this time it’s abroad! Can you guarantee she won’t still have those kinds of thoughts about you?!”
Jiang Xue’s expression remained indifferent. Of course, she had considered all this, but she wouldn’t tell Lin Yulan that after the last incident, Xia Yin wouldn’t be joining them in Melbourne.
“So? What exactly are you trying to say, Miss Lin?”
“Can’t you stay?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Lin Yulan couldn’t understand what was so great about that project. If Jiang Xue wanted, she could secure far better opportunities for her, ones a hundred times better than this one.
Unless, Jiang Xue’s real goal was to provoke her on purpose?
“No reason.” Jiang Xue’s tone was calm. “This is my work, and my choices are my own. They have nothing to do with you, Miss Lin.”
Lin Yulan instinctively grabbed her hand. “I know it’s your job, and I shouldn’t stop you. But I’m worried about you. Xia Yin is a reckless lunatic, and you’re an unbonded Omega there’s no guarantee she’ll behave after one lesson.”
In truth, Lin Yulan had been considering something these past few days whether she should fully bond with Jiang Xue. They were already married, legally bound as spouses. Even if she claimed Jiang Xue completely, it would be justified.
But every time she reached that final step, Lin Yulan hesitated. Because she hadn’t truly earned Jiang Xue’s forgiveness yet, nor could she be sure Jiang Xue would ever fully accept her again. If, in the end, Jiang Xue still couldn’t let go of their past grievances, then remaining unbonded would be the best outcome for her.
Now, with Jiang Xue insisting on going to Melbourne, Lin Yulan couldn’t help but worry that Xia Yin might try something again. An unbonded Omega like Jiang Xue would be nothing but a tempting piece of meat in the eyes of an Alpha like Xia Yin.
“You don’t need to worry about that. I won’t be the only Omega on the trip.”
“But if she wants to, she’ll find a way to get you alone!”
And Lin Yulan wasn’t just worried about Xia Yin. The university was practically crawling with Alphas, it might as well be an Alpha den. An Omega like Jiang Xue would be like Tang Sanzang falling into the lair of spider spirits everyone would want a bite.
Lin Yulan didn’t consider herself particularly possessive. Back when she was with Qu Mengxin, the most she couldn’t stand was Qu Mengxin partying with those Alphas, fearing she’d fall into their traps and never escape. But over these past seven days, Lin Yulan had gone over everything in her mind, how Jiang Xue had to face those Alphas at school every day, how she had to smile politely at the faculty, especially the higher-ups. The most infuriating part? Jiang Xue had never smiled at her like that. The thought alone made Lin Yulan’s chest ache unbearably.
Her woman wouldn’t even smile at her, yet she had to smile at other Alphas? What kind of nonsense was that?!!!
“Miss Lin, I know perfectly well how to protect myself. You don’t need to worry about that.” Jiang Xue took pleasure in seeing Lin Yulan like this, the more uncomfortable she was, the happier Jiang Xue felt. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading back to campus now.”
She tried to pull her hand free, but Lin Yulan’s grip was too tight. No matter how hard she tugged, she couldn’t break loose.
“Let go!”
Without another word, Lin Yulan scooped Jiang Xue up in a princess carry and headed downstairs.
“Lin Yulan, you bastard! Put me down!”
She shouted, but Jiang Xue was too afraid of falling to struggle. Instead, she clung tightly to Lin Yulan’s neck, worried that if she moved too much, Lin Yulan might drop her and send them both tumbling down the stairs.
Lin Yulan’s lips nearly curled into a smug grin, but fearing Jiang Xue’s wrath, she forced the laughter back down.
“With a free laborer like me at your disposal, Professor Jiang, wouldn’t it be a waste not to take advantage?”
Jiang Xue thought, A waste, my ass. She wouldn’t take this kind of “free labor” even if it were handed to her. Besides, what kind of free labor was this? These past seven days, Lin Yulan had worn her out to the point where not a single patch of skin was untouched. Her waist still ached, and certain private areas were still slightly swollen. She hadn’t even demanded compensation for workplace injuries!
This bastard was clearly just looking for an excuse to take advantage of her!
Sure enough, Lin Yulan’s hands, wrapped around her waist, began wandering shamelessly.
“Lin Yulan!”
Lin Yulan feigned innocence. “I’m just making sure Professor Jiang doesn’t fall. Gotta hold on tight.”
Once they reached the bottom of the stairs, Jiang Xue immediately wriggled out of Lin Yulan’s arms and stormed toward the door.
But only when she stepped outside did she realize she hadn’t driven here. That day, it had been Lin Yulan who brought her in her own car. If she wanted to return to campus now, she’d have to call a cab.
Jiang Xue turned and glared at Lin Yulan, her meaning crystal clear.
Lin Yulan immediately understood and considerately opened the car door for her.
But clearly, that wasn’t what Jiang Xue wanted. She held out her hand. “Keys.”
So she wanted to drive herself.
“Let me take you back to campus,” Lin Yulan said, tugging lightly at Jiang Xue’s sleeve. “Give me a chance, Professor Jiang?”
Jiang Xue wanted to refuse, but calling a cab would mean waiting too long. She didn’t want to linger in Lin Yulan’s private villa any longer, who knew if this perverted bastard would lose control again? If she got dragged back into bed, she might not be able to walk for days.
In the end, with no other choice, Jiang Xue got into the car.
Seeing this, Lin Yulan, afraid Jiang Xue might change her mind, quickly slid into the driver’s seat.
On the road, Lin Yulan suddenly thought of something and tentatively asked, “How long will this Melbourne project of yours last?”
Jiang Xue had previously said it might take one to two years, but Lin Yulan, as a project manager herself, had handled all kinds of collaborations. University exchange programs like this rarely lasted more than six months to a year certainly not over two. Jiang Xue had only said that back then as an excuse for divorce.
“Why do you ask, Miss Lin?”
Because I’m afraid you’ll run away.
Lin Yulan wasn’t just worried she was terrified. These past few days, she had been a bit of a bastard, taking advantage of Jiang Xue’s hazy state to ask all sorts of leading questions. But no matter how many times she asked, no matter how out of it Jiang Xue was, she never once relented on the question of whether she’d leave.
That left Lin Yulan with zero sense of security. Combined with Jiang Xue’s determination to go to Melbourne, her anxiety only grew.
She could accept Jiang Xue never forgiving her as long as Jiang Xue stayed by her side, everything else was manageable. What she truly feared was Jiang Xue disappearing without a word.
“I… I just want to know.”
She sounded almost childish, with a hint of grievance in her voice. This only made Jiang Xue more indignant she was the one who should be aggrieved here, yet this bastard had the nerve to act hurt first!
“Sorry, but I don’t feel like telling you.”
Lin Yulan opened her mouth as if to say more, then closed it. But it didn’t matter, she could always have someone look into it. Lin He had contacts at H University. Getting the information would be as simple as a single request. No need to rush now.
Soon, the car pulled up at H University’s gates.
Without a word, Jiang Xue pushed the door open to leave, but Lin Yulan was faster, blocking her exit.
“Lin Yulan, this is the school entrance! What the hell are you doing now?!”
Lin Yulan leaned in close, her face nearly touching Jiang Xue’s. “Professor Jiang, can I kiss you?”
Hah?!
Right at the school gates, with people coming and going? Kiss her ass!
Wait, no, that wasn’t the point. The real issue was that Lin Yulan’s perverse tendencies weren’t limited to home. Now she wanted to pull this crap in public?! Even perverts knew to read the room!
“Lin Yulan, you!”
Before Jiang Xue could finish, Lin Yulan pressed a quick kiss to the corner of her lips, then immediately released her and slid back into the car, all in one smooth motion.
By the time Jiang Xue processed what had happened, Lin Yulan was already driving away.
Lin Yulan, you pervert!!!
But Jiang Xue couldn’t shout it out loud. Unlike that pervert, she still had some sense of shame in public.
Suppressing her emotions, she straightened up and headed into campus.
But the moment she stepped through the gates, she ran into a colleague.
Jiang Xue’s outfit covered her neck completely, hiding all the marks Lin Yulan had left. But no matter how much she covered up, she couldn’t conceal everything. Her colleague’s gaze drifted downward and landed on the scattered marks along Jiang Xue’s ankles.
“Xiao Xue, what happened to your ankles? Why are there so many marks?”
Jiang Xue’s ears burned instantly. Through gritted teeth, she spat, “A dog bit me.”
