- Chapter 10 - Fidgeting Hands
Inside the study.
Wen Fei’s optical computer was connected to the military’s internal communication line.
“A-City is located in the sector where the Vacation Star and the Home World intersect. This area is the hub with the largest traffic throughput for the Vacation Star; historically, interstellar pirates have always been fond of harassing this spot.”
“Recently, some unstable factors have begun to resurface in this sector.”
“Sir, here are the files regarding the recent pirate activities for your review.”
The respectful voice of her subordinate, Yi Bai, came from the other end of the communication device.
Wen Fei flipped through the digital files, nodding slightly.
In addition to her role as the Chancellor of A-University, Wen Fei also held the rank of Colonel in the Vacation Star Military District Joint Defense, responsible for certain security and defense matters of the planet.
While the daily maintenance tasks were not numerous, every single one was critically important.
Looking at the solemn atmosphere on Wen Fei’s end through the screen, Yi Bai felt a bit intimidated by his superior’s long-standing authority.
Wen Fei had always been serious, strict, and hands-on. Her prestige was heavy; Yi Bai didn’t dare slack off under her watchful eye.
However, several years ago, the stronghold of the pirate organization that threatened the Empire had already been wiped out. The consensus within the military district was that the “remaining pirate remnants are no longer a threat.” Consequently, Yi Bai was somewhat reluctant to work overtime on these “trivial matters.”
“Sir, the main force of the Desolate Star pirates has been eliminated. This time… it shouldn’t have much of an impact, right?”
Ultimately, his resistance to the work overcame his fear of Wen Fei, and Yi Bai spoke up tentatively and euphemistically.
Wen Fei reviewed the data meticulously. Upon hearing this, her brows furrowed slightly, her long, curled lashes casting a small shadow under the lamplight.
Seeing the silence on Wen Fei’s end—where only the faint, crisp sound of digital files flipping could be heard—Yi Bai couldn’t help but feel anxious.
Just as the subordinate was hesitating whether to say something to smooth over the awkwardness of his slight offense, Wen Fei’s voice came through the device.
Her voice was cold and piercing, like unthawed snow on a pine tree in winter:
“Guard against arrogance and impetuosity; never underestimate the enemy. A grain of dust in your eyes is a collapsing sky when it falls upon a civilian.”
“Maintain the security defense. This is our job, and it is our duty.”
Hearing Wen Fei’s voice, Yi Bai jolted, his back straightening instantly as he responded loudly:
“Yes, ma’am!”
After saying this, Wen Fei cut the communication.
She continued to browse the documents in her hand.
This file detailed the trajectory, frequency, and methods of the pirates’ recent activities.
Although the main force of the Desolate Star pirates had been destroyed, with the current fluctuations in the interstellar situation, new pirate factions had gathered near this Vacation Star. They acted with cruelty and disrupted the peace.
Wen Fei looked at the data with a grave expression.
She couldn’t help but feel a bit relieved that she had kept Jiang Shixue by her side.
Looking at the files, a faint smile appeared on Wen Fei’s face.
Wen Fei didn’t truly want to be Jiang Shixue’s girlfriend; she simply wanted to use the title of “girlfriend” to keep Jiang Shixue under her wing.
Wen Fei was accustomed to naturally controlling the development of events toward her desired outcome whenever something occurred.
In her youth, Wen Fei had many younger sisters.
However, Wen Fei herself was young then. Although she had gained some status within the family through her own abilities, in the face of absolute power, that status was an illusion.
Several children had left this world one after another. Though Wen Fei was in pain, she understood that she lacked the power to protect them at that time.
Now, she had the power to guard. But of the children she could protect, only Jiang Shixue remained.
Wen Fei put down the documents, pinched the bridge of her nose, and leaned back against the chair in exhaustion.
Thinking of Jiang Shixue, a strange sensation stirred in Wen Fei’s heart.
In the blink of an eye, Jiang Shixue had grown so much. She was still just as cute and pitiable as before.
Wen Fei still remembered the first time she met Jiang Shixue; she was a tiny child standing before her, looking up. Back then, she was barely taller than Wen Fei’s waist, her face carrying a bit of baby fat, white and tender like a freshly steamed rice cake. One couldn’t help but want to give her a pinch.
Although Jiang Shixue looked soft, she was a resilient child. For all these years, she had lived well on her own.
Only…
Thinking about the things Jiang Shixue had said to her downstairs at the dormitory this morning, Wen Fei’s smile faded slightly.
Jiang Shixue appeared well-behaved and had a good personality, getting along with everyone. Wen Fei had originally thought she was an internally strong child.
However, she seemed to be a child who needed company and lacked a sense of security.
Wen Fei had always been observing Jiang Shixue.
She had seen Jiang Shixue politely reject confessions; even if she didn’t like the person, she always maintained a gentle smile and never made them feel embarrassed.
She had also seen Jiang Shixue standing on the podium, her voice loud and confident, so dazzlingly bright that one couldn’t look away.
She had even seen Jiang Shixue out with friends, where she would meticulously look after everyone’s emotions…
Jiang Shixue’s public image was always proper and elegant; Wen Fei hadn’t expected her inner self to be such a sensitive, heartbreaking child.
Thinking of this, Wen Fei couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt.
For all these years, she indeed had been watching Jiang Shixue, and she thought she understood her well. But now it seemed that wasn’t enough; it seemed to be merely a form of self-centered, sentimental devotion…
Wen Fei closed her eyes slightly.
She forced herself to stop thinking about Jiang Shixue and to concentrate on finishing the military matters at hand.
Wen Fei opened her eyes.
Someone was standing at the door of the study.
It seemed she had hallucinated Jiang Shixue again.
Wen Fei blinked.
At the door of the study, Jiang Shixue poked half of her small head in. Her pale blonde hair draped over her shoulders, the ends naturally curling, looking soft and smooth.
Wen Fei looked at Jiang Shixue, frowned slightly, lowered her head, and took two deep breaths.
Was the hallucination this vivid?
When she looked up again, she saw Jiang Shixue complaining with a piteous look:
“Wen Fei, Wen Fei, do you not like me anymore?”
The hallucination suddenly spoke.
Wen Fei’s usually steady hand trembled. Fortunately, the optical computer was equipped with an automatic suspension system, so it didn’t fall to the floor.
Wen Fei’s peripheral vision caught the unfinished documents on the desk.
She tried to use her mind to flip the page automatically.
The data remained still, not responding to her subjective will.
Confirmed: Not a hallucination.
Wen Fei put down the optical computer and reached out toward Jiang Shixue.
She stroked Jiang Shixue’s head and pinched her cheek, confirming the person before her was real.
She cleared her throat, making her voice sound as calm and composed as usual:
“What’s wrong?”
Seeing Wen Fei acting so calm, Jiang Shixue felt unexpectedly annoyed, having worked herself into her “role.”
She huffed, turned her head away, then turned back to look at Wen Fei:
“You ignored me the moment we got home. Look at how long it’s been! Do you still have me, your girlfriend, in your heart?”
Jiang Shixue’s voice was soft at the end. Having committed to the act, her prepared lines came out quite smoothly this time.
Wen Fei looked at Jiang Shixue with a hint of apology on her face: “How could I ignore you? I just had some work to handle.”
“Oh,” Jiang Shixue pursed her lips. The bit of anger in her heart dissipated, and her face began to flush a light red again.
Aiya, I definitely can’t back down verbally! I have to find more faults!
Jiang Shixue double-clicked the time system on her optical computer: “Hmph, don’t make excuses. Look at how long it’s been!”
Uh, less than half a system hour.
Jiang Shixue felt a bit awkward, but… whatever! She cheered herself up internally and began to act unreasonably again:
“And… besides, in such a huge house, I’m all alone. I’m scared. It’s raining outside. Do you have the heart to let your girlfriend be so miserable?”
As she spoke, Jiang Shixue pointed outside.
She rarely spoke to people like this; usually, she was accustomed to being polite and gentle, never making things difficult for others.
However, facing Wen Fei at this moment, a sense of “arrogant entitlement” inexplicably surged in her heart—as if she really were Wen Fei’s girlfriend and could righteously criticize Wen Fei for neglecting her.
Only then did Wen Fei notice that, at some point, it had started pitter-pattering with rain outside.
The rain rhythmically tapped, and the sky had darkened.
Wen Fei glanced at Jiang Shixue and was about to speak. Before she could, Jiang Shixue seized the opportunity to slip inside. Pretending to be very well-behaved, she blinked with “starry-eyed” intensity: “I’ll just draw next to you. I won’t disturb you.”
Wen Fei let out a light chuckle and pointed to the side: “You didn’t bring your drawing tools. How will you draw?”
Jiang Shixue tilted her head and said with a smile: “Oh, my skills are very high. The optical computer is my canvas, and my fingers are my brushes.”
Looking at Jiang Shixue’s fair, slender fingers with their neatly trimmed nails, Wen Fei imagined them dancing across the optical computer, and a flicker of heat rose in her heart.
Nodding slightly, Wen Fei said: “Alright.”
Jiang Shixue gave a sweet smile, sat down close to Wen Fei, and opened her optical computer.
Yes! The “thermal violence” (cloying affection) quota for today has been exceeded!
Jiang Shixue huddled next to Wen Fei and opened her computer for show.
However, a “salted fish” (lazy person) is a mysterious species. The moment they start to study, they suddenly find everything else around them more interesting.
Jiang Shixue felt uncomfortable the moment she had to do serious work.
After drawing became a professional course, it was categorized as “serious business” by Jiang Shixue, and thus became very boring.
She held her stylus and poked at the screen listlessly—one moment poking a little chick, the next a little pile of poop.
Wen Fei watched her poke around for a while and found it quite funny, but she didn’t disturb her.
After a while, Jiang Shixue suddenly turned around, blinked, and looked at Wen Fei: “I want to eat snacks.”
Wen Fei called over the robot and had it bring some mushroom crisps for Jiang Shixue.
Jiang Shixue ate happily, her legs swinging back and forth.
After finishing the mushroom crisps, she waited a bit longer and said: “I’m cold!”
Wen Fei gave the robot another command to bring a small blanket for Jiang Shixue.
Jiang Shixue wrapped herself up, eating while poking at her computer, occasionally looking up at Wen Fei.
After a while longer, Jiang Shixue got bored of the optical computer. She poked Wen Fei and looked at her: “Girlfriend, I’m so bored. Can I watch you work?”
Wen Fei’s eyes darkened, her expression unreadable as she said: “You may.”
Jiang Shixue looked at Wen Fei’s workspace, touching here and there. Wen Fei’s desktop suddenly shifted forms, and a pile of documents emerged.
So, Jiang Shixue began flipping through the files.
The sheer volume of documents made her eyes go blurry.
She wasn’t interested in these words, so her hands continued to fidget and touch around the desk.
Suddenly, Jiang Shixue touched something hard.
Curiously, she turned to look at Wen Fei and asked: “What is this?”
Wen Fei glanced at it: “A ferule.”
“A… a ferule?”
The object before her was pitch black, made of an unknown material, and felt as smooth as jade to the touch.
An inexplicable sense of familiarity rose in Jiang Shixue’s heart. She felt that this thing was somehow frightening.
Jiang Shixue was momentarily dazed. Looking at Wen Fei, her voice was a bit timid as she asked stutteringly: “What… what is a ferule used for?”
