The entire court knows that the current Emperor’s two right-hand men come from vastly different worlds. One is Shi Hanshang (courtesy name: Lanbie), the Prime Minister from a prestigious lineage of civil officials. The other is Sheng Yuli (courtesy name: Zhige), the Great General from a family of military heroes.

The three of them grew up together as childhood friends and share a deep bond. Or rather, the Emperor shares a deep bond with both of them. As for the relationship between the two ministers themselves:

From the moment he first saw seven-year-old Sheng Yuli at a palace banquet, Shi Hanshang knew he did not like him.

Sheng Yuli simply rolled his eyes: “What a coincidence. I do not like you either.”

When their eyes met, the sparks of war were instantly ignited. From that day on, in civil debates, Shi Hanshang would use his silver tongue to checkmate the General. In physical bouts, Sheng Yuli would use unpredictable maneuvers to turn the tables. Whether they were in the classroom, at poetry gatherings, or on the training grounds, the two were always seen locked in combat.

Shi Hanshang: “Admit defeat!” Sheng Yuli: “Why should I? If anyone is admitting defeat, it is you first!” Shi Hanshang: “I refuse!” Sheng Yuli: “Then I refuse too!” Both: “Hmph!”

By constantly provoking one another, these two “Kings” of the literary and military worlds forced each other to become versatile geniuses. Even after the Crown Prince ascended the throne and the two were separated by their high offices, the entire court ended up divided into the Shi and Sheng factions. They were as incompatible as fire and water.

One day, the court was in an uproar over the Grand Princess’s marriage arrangements. The “Peacemaker” Emperor finally snapped: “Enough! Stop arguing! I already have a candidate in mind!” (The ministers all looked at the Emperor.) The Emperor cleared his throat and looked at the two men who were secretly glaring at each other: “Minister Shi? General Sheng? Do either of you?” The two spoke in perfect unison: “This official feels unwell! I crave Your Majesty’s leave to depart!” Emperor: “You two certainly have great chemistry at times like this.”

On the day the Grand Princess finally married, both men breathed a sigh of relief. Having had a bit too much to drink, they accidentally stumbled into the same guest chamber.

Two months later, the Prime Minister felt a sharp pain in his lower abdomen and nearly fell from his horse during a royal hunt. He was rescued by General Sheng, who just happened to be “passing by.”

The old imperial physician trembled as he finished taking Shi Hanshang’s pulse. He fell to his knees in terror and stammered: “Reporting to Your Excellency, you have a pregnancy pulse!”

The two men in the tent: “?!!”

Thinking back to that “incident,” rage surged in Shi Hanshang’s heart.

He drew his sword and lunged: “Sheng Yuli! Give me your life!”

Sheng Yuli cried out in shock: “Do not be so reckless! Be careful not to upset the fetal qi!”

“You! Get out!”
