Chen Ji stared at the broken sword lodged in his chest and sighed. This was the third time today that he had been stabbed. Normally, a person would be screaming or, more likely, dead, but Chen Ji only felt a slight itch.

As a transmigrator who had landed in the world of a tragic Xianxia novel, he was supposed to be the useless senior brother who died in the first three chapters to motivate the protagonist. Instead, he had been granted a cheat ability that was both a blessing and a curse: The Indestructible Script.

As long as the original tragic ending remained unchanged, Chen Ji literally could not die. He was tied to the fate of the novel. If the script demanded a miserable conclusion, the world would keep him alive to witness it.

“I just want to go home,” Chen Ji muttered, pulling the blade out of his ribs with a wet squelch. He did not even bother to bandage the wound; it would close on its own in minutes.

He looked over at his junior brother, Yan Jue, the future protagonist who was currently crouched in the dirt. Yan Jue was covered in blood, his eyes cold and distant. In the original story, this was the moment Yan Jue would lose his faith in humanity and begin his path of cold blooded cultivation.

Chen Ji knew he had to change this. If he could turn the tragedy into a happy ending, the script would release him. He just needed to be nice.

He walked over to the aloof boy and held out a hand. Yan Jue flinched, his gaze sharpening like a blade.

“Do not be afraid,” Chen Ji said, forcing a cheerful smile despite his irritable mood. “Senior Brother is here.”

He reached into his sleeve and pulled out a high grade spirit stone, something the original Chen Ji would have stolen for himself. “Here, take this. It helps with the pain.”

Yan Jue stared at the stone, then at the blood soaking Chen Ji’s robes. “Why did you jump in front of me?” he asked, his voice low and raspy. “You could have died.”

Chen Ji waved a hand dismissively. “It was just a scratch. Besides, you are my junior brother. Who else will look after you if I do not?”

He did not notice the way Yan Jue’s eyes flickered or how the boy’s icy grip on his own sword loosened. Chen Ji was too busy thinking about how to fix the next plot point. He spent the next month doting on the boy, giving him the best food, protecting him from bullies, and offering constant encouragement.

A few months later, Chen Ji realized something was very wrong.

The cold, aloof male lead who was supposed to become a legendary, stoic immortal was currently tugging on Chen Ji’s sleeve.

“Senior Brother,” Yan Jue said, his voice sounding suspiciously like a pout. “My finger has a splinter. It hurts.”

Chen Ji looked at the powerful cultivator who could slay a demon with a flick of his wrist. He looked at the tiny, invisible splinter. “You are a genius of our sect,” he said, his eye twitching. “Surely you can handle a splinter.”

Yan Jue looked at him with big, watery eyes, looking entirely too spoiled. “But Senior Brother always helps me.”

Chen Ji sighed and reached for the boy’s hand. He had set out to build a good relationship to save the world, but he had somehow turned the fearsome protagonist into a clingy, spoiled little tail.

Did I overdo it? Chen Ji wondered as Yan Jue leaned his head against his shoulder. The male lead’s character has completely collapsed.
