The Aloof Film Queen Gets Entangled by a Sweet Little Omega - Chapter 10
Whose Wife Died?
Shi Rui stepped out of the car. The night wind was strong, sending a chill through her body. She instinctively hugged her arms, looking up at the hotel before her, her voice trembling slightly.
“Where… where are we going?” she asked.
Luo Xiao looked at her back without saying a word. Instead, she turned and opened the back door of the car to take out a shawl, then draped it over Shi Rui.
The cool fingertips brushed against her skin for a fleeting moment.
Shi Rui looked down. Those hands, as white as jade, were instantly withdrawn, leaving only a pink shawl neatly draped over her shoulders.
“Let’s go, stop staring,” Luo Xiao urged from her side.
Shi Rui gave a small hum of agreement and was about to rush forward with her head down when she was suddenly grabbed by the arm and pulled back.
In an instant, the world seemed to spin. In the blink of an eye, she somehow found herself falling into Luo Xiao’s embrace.
Slender fingers gently pinched her arm; they were cool to the touch, enough to make one instantly sober.
“This way,” Luo Xiao said, looking down at her. She applied a bit of pressure with her hand, her tone turning somewhat deep as she guided her toward the entrance of an underground passage on the other side. She explained softly, “There’s a park across the way.”
Shi Rui felt her mind was in a muddle. she looked up at Luo Xiao, following her in a daze.
A park? Why are we going to a park?
The park was still quite lively at this hour. Someone had set up speakers at the entrance to sing, though most were middle-aged or elderly people holding microphones and passionately performing songs from the last century. Consequently, there were very few people listening.
There was a gazebo opposite them. Luo Xiao hesitated for a moment but continued to lead Shi Rui forward. They didn’t stop until they reached the gazebo and sat down on one side.
“Hmm?” Shi Rui remained standing, tilting her head in confusion.
Luo Xiao patted the spot next to her and replied warmly, “Didn’t you say you’d go wherever I go?”
Shi Rui remained silent, her large eyes darting around. Then, wrapping the shawl tightly around herself, she sat down beside Luo Xiao.
There was no one else in the gazebo except the two of them. There was a river next to the park, making the wind here even stronger than it had been by the roadside.
She glanced at Luo Xiao’s chest-length dress and then at her own shawl. She couldn’t help but shimmy her bottom closer, but she misjudged the distance and accidentally bumped into Luo Xiao’s shoulder.
When Luo Xiao looked over, Shi Rui tilted her chin up and let out two silly “hehe” giggles through squinted eyes. Dropping her guard completely, she nudged Luo Xiao with her shoulder and whispered, “Sister, are you cold?”
As she spoke, she had already extended one arm, holding the shawl up high.
Luo Xiao wanted to say she wasn’t cold, but the words that left her mouth were an affirmation, and she proactively leaned in closer.
Shi Rui shared the shawl with her for warmth. In a place hidden from view, their shoulders brushed and their hands touched, yet she didn’t dare take a further step. She simply talked to her with a smile.
“Sister, what are we doing here?”
“Listening to them sing.”
A straight-faced lie.
Shi Rui took it as the truth and sat obediently after saying “oh.” Suddenly, her phone buzzed twice. She reached for it, but because they were sitting so close, she accidentally touched Luo Xiao’s arm.
“Sorry, Sister.” She hurried to move away, but to her surprise, Luo Xiao caught her. “It’s alright.”
Shi Rui opened her phone to check. It was a message from Ming Qing: 【Did you kiss yet?】
The moment she saw the message, the “little rabbit” turned red from head to toe. Her whole body felt scorching hot as her fingers frantically typed: 【No, don’t… don’t talk nonsense.】
【Oh, the progress is so slow. At least you should be holding hands by now, right?】 Ming Qing continued to press for updates.
Shi Rui was so flustered her face burned. Just as she was about to turn off her phone and ignore Ming Qing, an icy sensation touched her burning hand.
“Your face is so red. What’s wrong?”
Luo Xiao naturally pinched her hand, asking with concern.
“No, it’s nothing.” Shi Rui didn’t have time to reply to Ming Qing; she clicked the screen off, shoved the phone into her pocket, and sat bolt upright, not daring to move an inch.
“Is it really nothing?”
Luo Xiao’s finger lightly tapped the back of her hand, her tone rising slightly. “You look so nervous, Little Rabbit.”
Then, with a hint of sharpness, she pressed, “Who messaged you?”
“It was my roommate,” Shi Rui replied obediently, trembling slightly but not pulling her hand away.
Luo Xiao raised an eyebrow slightly, her tone softening as she smiled. “Oh.”
But she didn’t take her hand back.
Shi Rui sat there stiffly, not daring to move. The two fingers tapping lightly on the back of her hand felt as heavy as a thousand pounds, making it hard for her to breathe.
Buzz-buzz. The phone went off again. Knowing it must be another message from Qing Qing, Shi Rui wanted to check. She even wanted to ask “Professor Ming” how to hold hands naturally. But as soon as she moved, the person beside her reacted even faster.
Her palm was pried open, and a cold sensation instantly slid between her fingers. Their palms met, and their fingers intertwined intimately; it felt as though a violently thumping heart was being squeezed between them.
Shi Rui looked up at the person beside her in shock. For a moment, she couldn’t tell whose heart was beating so hard, but after thinking for a while, she decided it must be her own.
She learned to respond, gripping Luo Xiao’s hand tightly. Her face was a total mess of red, and she felt as if she were radiating steam.
“Our date time is very short. Can we please not let others disturb us?” Luo Xiao looked at her sideways, asking in a tone that was almost a plea.
Shi Rui was left dazed and lightheaded by that tone. Hearing the word “date” made her even more overjoyed. She nodded and gave a small “mhm,” then quietly savored the thought: We really are on a date.
Aside from the slight fluctuations in her voice when she spoke, Luo Xiao didn’t show much of a reaction. She simply pressed against the tiger’s mouth (the web between the thumb and forefinger) of Shi Rui’s hand over and over, softly humming the melody of a memory along with the person singing opposite them.
Shi Rui had heard those songs on her mother’s phone before. She used to think they were outdated, but now she felt a special attraction in them. She couldn’t help but lean in, lightly brushing her shoulder against Luo Xiao’s.
“Sister.”
“Hmm.”
“How much longer are we going to sit here?”
Didn’t you say it was a date? Why are we just sitting here?
Luo Xiao took a deep breath, as if she were trying her best to endure something. She turned to look at the “Little Rabbit,” smiled elegantly, and said in her beautiful voice, “I’ll ask you a few questions. If you get them all right, we’ll go on our date, okay?”
“Okay!” Shi Rui answered immediately, for fear that the offer would vanish if she waited a second.
This vivid, lively display made Luo Xiao’s heart skip a beat. She couldn’t help but drop her shoulder and lean in to rest against Shi Rui’s head before beginning her questions:
“Do you know about the Dragon Tribe?”
“I do!” Like a good student in school, Shi Rui honestly recited all the knowledge she knew. “Dragons have very long lifespans; dragons can fly in the sky and dive into the sea…”
She said a lot in one breath. When she regained her composure, she realized Luo Xiao was listening very intently. Her face flushed instantly, fearing she had said something wrong. She lowered her head and whispered, “Sister, did I say something wrong?”
“No,” Luo Xiao said, still staring at her fixedly. “But there is one thing you didn’t mention.”
“What is it?” Shi Rui looked up curiously.
Luo Xiao’s expression grew colder as she said flatly, “The Dragon Tribe does not easily marry outside their race.”
A dragon’s lifespan is too long; no one in this world can outlive them.
No one is willing to watch their lover’s hair turn white and grow frail in the prime of their youth, only to eventually fade away in their arms. Therefore, since ancient times, the Dragon Tribe has had an unwritten rule: they do not easily marry outside their race.
Hearing this, Shi Rui, who had been smiling moments ago, froze. Her smile stiffened on her face, and after a moment, she spoke with great difficulty: “Sister, you…”
What do you mean by that?
The rims of her eyes turned red. At this moment, she felt the hand tightly clasping hers turn instantly ice-cold.
The entertainment gossip Ming Qing had shared earlier suddenly flooded her mind like a tidal wave. She knew that some celebrities kept “little lovers”—no feelings, no responsibility, just sex.
Shi Rui blinked sadly. Crystal-clear teardrops slid down instantly, hitting her hand with a patter, only to be gently wiped away by someone else.
“One last question: Have you ever heard a story from a thousand years ago about a dragon whose wife died?” Luo Xiao wiped her tears tenderly. Her tone was incredibly calm, showing not a single hint of panic or heartache.
Shi Rui shook her head, staring blankly.
A dragon’s wife could die? That’s impossible!
As far as records went, no one in the Dragon Tribe had ever lost a wife to death, because dragons’ wives were also dragons, and each lived longer than the last.
She had heard of many divorcing their wives, though—did that count?
Luo Xiao gave a self-deprecating laugh, saying helplessly yet heartlessly, “Since you couldn’t answer my question, Little Rabbit, we can’t go on a date tonight.”
With that, she stood up. She looked down at her, moved her hand, and said, “Let’s go. I’ll take you back.”
Shi Rui sat there dazed, not moving until Luo Xiao gave her a gentle tug. She followed her up and walked silently by her side.
Their hands were still tightly entwined. She didn’t quite understand what tonight was supposed to mean.
Passing by a convenience store, Luo Xiao stopped first, then let go of her hand and walked inside.
Before Shi Rui could react to her palm suddenly feeling empty, she looked up at the store. Luo Xiao was standing openly at the checkout counter paying for something.
Wait!
Shi Rui panicked. Her sister wasn’t wearing a mask—she’d be recognized!
She rushed inside immediately, only to collide right into Luo Xiao, who was coming out with her purchase. She bumped straight into her arms.
“What’s wrong? Do you need to buy something?” Luo Xiao asked, steadying her.
Shi Rui shook her head, grabbing her sleeve and explaining nervously, “You weren’t wearing a mask just now. You’ll be photographed.”
“It’s okay. It doesn’t matter.”
Luo Xiao smiled, looking very composed. Shi Rui thought for a moment that her sister must have a handle on the situation, so she stopped worrying and breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
To her surprise, she then heard the words: “I’ve already been photographed anyway.”
“Then what should we do?” Shi Rui was incredibly anxious.
“It’s fine, don’t worry about those things.” Luo Xiao handed her the item she bought—a roasted sweet potato—and even thoughtfully opened it and handed over a spoon. Her voice sounded a bit muffled. “I’m sorry I made you cry.”
Holding the steaming sweet potato in her hands, Shi Rui stared at her blankly, her brow furrowed. She really couldn’t figure out what was going on tonight.
Sister is so strange.
Luo Xiao’s expression grew more and more troubled. After handing the sweet potato to Shi Rui, she proactively and bossily took her hand again.
“Sister,” Shi Rui shifted slightly, reminding her in a small voice, “I can’t eat like this.”
With only one hand free, she couldn’t manage the roasted sweet potato.
Hearing this, Luo Xiao looked down, clearly struggling and hesitating for a moment, but she stubbornly held the hand even tighter. She reached out with her other hand, grabbed the handles of the bag containing the sweet potato, and easily lifted it into her own hand.
“Don’t eat it now. Eat it when you get back to the dorm.”
Her tone sounded cold and forceful. Shi Rui didn’t say anything else, her ears drooping as she gave a dejected nod.
The car drove very fast on the way back. In less than ten minutes, it pulled up below Dormitory Building O3.
Shi Rui looked at the familiar building and sighed, thinking that although the date was weird, why did it have to end so quickly?
She unbuckled her seatbelt to get out, but a pair of larger hands suddenly pinned her down.
Luo Xiao leaned in slightly, suppressing various impulses. She grabbed Shi Rui’s hand and hooked the bag with the sweet potato onto it, her voice sounding as if it were laced with ice.
“Remember the question I asked you. Look hard for the answer. I look forward to our next date going smoothly.”
With that, she let go.
Shi Rui was completely bewildered, but she still nodded. After smiling and saying goodnight, she opened the car door and stepped out.
Luo Xiao waited until Shi Rui’s figure disappeared into the dormitory hallway before driving away, heading straight for the hotel Shi Rui had almost entered earlier.
As the elevator ascended, Luo Xiao was alone in the empty cabin. Her face was terrifyingly grim.
The Little Rabbit’s first instinct had not been wrong: she hadn’t intended to go on a date tonight. She had only wanted to snatch the Little Rabbit back to her own nest.
If she hadn’t seen the Little Rabbit shivering yet pretending to be calm after getting out of the car, she would have brought her back long ago.
Luo Xiao double-locked the door. Her stance was a bit unsteady, and her breathing was gradually becoming heavy, though her eyes remained relatively clear.
She took out her phone and made a call. After a few rings, the other side picked up. “Hello? How was the date?”
At this hour, the plane hadn’t taken off yet. Qi Ran’s carefree voice came through. Luo Xiao took a deep breath and went straight to the point: “My rut has arrived. Come straight here after you land.”
She sent her current address and room number.
Qi Ran was shocked upon seeing it, her voice trembling slightly. “Why are you staying there?”
Luo Xiao hated noise. After arriving in S City, the hotel she booked was over thirty kilometers from the city center. Why would she suddenly…
Oh, right. To chase her wife. Thirty-plus kilometers was a bit far.
“Did you catch your wife? Let her help you through your rut.”
Qi Ran continued talking. Since there was nothing to be done for now—Luo Xiao couldn’t drive back to get the specialized dragon suppressants during a rut, and Qi Ran couldn’t teleport to her—she could only chat to pass the time.
There was no response from the other end, only the sound of labored breathing.
“Hey, I’m saying, how did this rut come so suddenly? It’s not like you haven’t been alone with the Little Rabbit before. Why did it have to be tonight…”
“Shut up.”
Luo Xiao showed a rare burst of emotion. Leaning back against the sofa, she was trying hard to endure.
Qi Ran was a chatterbox with a smart mouth. Hearing this, she clicked her tongue twice and teased: “True. If my wife came back to life after being dead for a thousand years, I’d go into rut on the spot too. You’re stronger than me—you’ve endured for so long. You’re the impressive one. Hang in there, I’ll be back in four hours.”
Luo Xiao didn’t want to hear her anymore and irritably hung up the phone.
The empty room made her feel even more restless. This place was very close to S University. The person living inside that university seemed to possess sorcery, clawing at her heart and making it impossible for her to find peace.
The lights in the room suddenly dimmed. A streak of green light, like a falling star, flashed across the dark night sky. Subsequently, a green dragon quietly landed on the roof of the building opposite Dormitory O3. It carefully curled itself into a ball, resting its head on its body, looking pitifully at that lit window.
Inside the dorm, after washing up, several Omegas were huddled around a desk, heads together, seriously researching something.
Shi Rui chewed on her pen, mumbling indistinctly: “Just which dragon was it that lost their wife?”
