Chapter 10: The Affectionate Stand-in is Coveted (10)
When Wen Zhe opened his eyes again, orange light was already shimmering outside the window. He propped himself up; his head still ached slightly, but he felt much better. He had slept for almost an entire day.
Only the assistant was in the room. Seeing him wake up, the assistant immediately said with surprise, “Brother Wen Zhe, you’re awake.”
Wen Zhe rubbed his temples, his voice still a bit raspy when he spoke. “What did the production crew say?”
He hadn’t had time to ask the crew for leave, and he didn’t know how they had reacted.
The assistant smilingly placed a bowl of porridge in front of him. “Don’t worry, Brother Wen Zhe. President Ye already requested leave for you. The crew didn’t dare say much.”
Wen Zhe was stunned for a moment. “President Ye?”
“Yeah, he was the one who took care of you while you had a fever,” the assistant said.
Images of Ye Baihuai standing at the door flashed through Wen Zhe’s mind. He remembered now, though only in scattered fragments. “Why would Ye Baihuai come over?”
“He lives right next door,” the assistant said.
Wen Zhe was even more surprised. The assistant seemed to remember something. “Oh right, President Ye said to let him know once you woke up.” As he spoke, the assistant smiled. “President Ye really seems to care about you.”
The call was dialed. Wen Zhe was still processing the series of information the assistant had given him—Ye Baihuai living next door and taking care of him all night.
The call was connected on the other end. The assistant told Ye Baihuai that Wen Zhe was awake. Wen Zhe waved his hand at the assistant, signaling for the phone. Regardless of whether it was intentional or not, the other man had cared for him all night; it was only right to express his gratitude.
When the phone was handed over, it was very quiet on the other end. Wen Zhe spoke up, “Thank you for taking care of me last night.”
There was no response. Wen Zhe glanced at the phone screen; the call was still active. Soon, however, he heard a light “Hmph.” “You’d better watch yourself.”
The call was disconnected. Wen Zhe’s eyes widened in surprise. What did that mean? Who warns someone to “watch themselves” right after taking care of them?
Wen Zhe felt it was bizarre but simply ignored it, finished his food, and lay back down.
After another night, when he woke up the next morning, Wen Zhe felt much lighter. Having stayed in the room for so long, he wanted to go out and move around, so he went downstairs for breakfast.
There was a breakfast buffet on the first floor. He quite liked the vegetable porridge here in the mornings. After entering, he took a tray and walked toward the buffet area.
Just as he entered the buffet area, he spotted a familiar figure—Ye Baihuai, who wore a full suit even for breakfast.
Wen Zhe walked over and took the initiative to greet him. “Good morning.”
The other man glanced back at him and said coldly, “Good morning.”
Wen Zhe found it strange. How could his attitude change so quickly in just one day? He picked up two fried dumplings, not intending to guess why. Just as he was about to walk away to get some porridge, he heard Ye Baihuai’s voice again. There seemed to be a hint of dissatisfaction in his tone. “Better?”
Wen Zhe replied with a smile, “I should thank you again for your care yesterday.”
Ye Baihuai’s face remained tense, showing no happiness at being thanked. “No need for thanks. You’re probably annoyed that the one taking care of you last night wasn’t Jiang Han.”
Wen Zhe was a bit taken aback. Though he was “love-brained,” was he really such an unreasonable person? “Of course not.”
Ye Baihuai let out a cold laugh. “Is that so? You were calling his name all night, weren’t you tired of it? You truly are devoted.”
Wen Zhe’s eyes widened as he looked at Ye Baihuai. He tried to recall the scene that night, but he couldn’t remember such a thing happening.
However, this was very much in line with his character setting; it seemed like something he would do. “Instinct, I suppose. I still love him very much.”
At those words, Ye Baihuai’s face became even more tense and gloomy. He spoke almost through gritted teeth, “You really won’t shed a tear until you see the coffin!”
After saying that, Ye Baihuai left indignantly. Wen Zhe watched his back and fell into thought, then took a deep breath. Once the “White Moonlight” returned, he would see the coffin and shed his tears; it would be very soon.
Jiang Han sat in his office, looking at his phone screen. Ever since Wen Zhe left Zhao Kuo’s villa that day, he hadn’t contacted him. Three days—not a single message.
Previously, he would receive messages from Wen Zhe every day. Regardless of whether he replied or not, Wen Zhe was always persistent, as if he had to prove his existence every day.
His fingers scrolled irritably. Eventually, he edited some text in the chat box, deleting and rewriting, but in the end, not a single word was sent.
In fact, from the night Wen Zhe left the villa, he had been waiting for Wen Zhe’s message. As a result, he hadn’t received anything that night, nor until now. This was very abnormal.
Recalling the scene when Wen Zhe came out of the pool—looking back now, that image seemed to have a beautiful filter over it—but his gaze upon leaving was not normal. He didn’t usually look at him that way.
Was he throwing a tantrum?
Jiang Han called for his secretary. He stood up and straightened his suit. “Prepare two gifts. We’re going to the film set.”
Upon arriving at the set, Jiang Han got out of the car holding two bags. It was currently noon, and it would soon be time for lunch.
Jiang Ke was the first to spot him. Ignoring the makeup artist who was touching up his face, he immediately ran over and greeted him with surprise, “Brother Jiang Han.”
Jiang Han gave him a smile and then handed him a gift. “I was passing by and stopped to see you. I brought a gift for you.”
Jiang Ke immediately took it happily. “Thank you, Brother Jiang Han!”
Jiang Han’s gaze scanned the surroundings. “Where is Wen Zhe?”
Hearing him look for Wen Zhe, Jiang Ke’s face immediately fell. “He’s sitting over there.”
Jiang Han walked over and indeed saw Wen Zhe half-reclining on a lounge chair. With the weather nearing twenty degrees, he was actually covered with a blanket. “Wen Zhe.”
Hearing the voice, Wen Zhe turned back in surprise. The moment he saw Jiang Han, he subconsciously smiled. “Why are you here?”
However, once he regained his senses, his smile dimmed. He glanced at Jiang Ke beside Jiang Han, understanding that he had come to see Jiang Ke.
Jiang Han clearly noticed. He looked at Wen Zhe’s porcelain-white face and parted his lips. The words were on the tip of his tongue but changed at the last second. “I was here on business and stopped by to see you.”
Wen Zhe understood. His face returned to a calm expression, and he didn’t speak again.
“Are you cold?” Jiang Han asked.
Wen Zhe assumed he was asking out of curiosity and didn’t think he truly cared. But just as he was about to speak, he was interrupted by Jiang Ke beside him, who said sarcastically, “He said he was sick and even rested for two days. It seriously delayed the crew’s progress and made things miserable for us actors and the director.”
As he spoke, Jiang Ke pulled piteously at Jiang Han’s sleeve. “We came very early today to catch up on the schedule. I’m exhausted.” Then, he looked at Wen Zhe again. “I see you look perfectly fine. You don’t look sick at all.”
Jiang Han’s brow furrowed. Sick? So he got sick because he went into the pool that day?
He looked at Wen Zhe. The other man had a faint, almost imperceptible smile on his face, as if he no longer cared what Jiang Ke said. Seeing this, a trace of guilt welled up in Jiang Han’s heart.
Jiang Ke was still chattering beside him. The more he spoke, the more irritable Jiang Han became. For the first time, he wanted to shut Jiang Ke’s mouth. Eventually, he stopped him sternly, “Enough. Go do whatever you’re supposed to be doing right now.”
Jiang Ke immediately fell silent. He looked at Jiang Han in shock. This was the first time Jiang Han had spoken to him in such a heavy tone. He was simply incredulous.
“Go,” Jiang Han said impatiently.
Jiang Ke’s eyes instantly reddened. Looking at Jiang Han’s tense face, he finally glared viciously at Wen Zhe before leaving indignantly.
The scene of Jiang Han scolding Jiang Ke also greatly surprised Wen Zhe. In the past, no matter what Jiang Ke said, he never dared to talk back in front of Jiang Han because he was never the one being favored. But just now, Jiang Han had actually scolded Jiang Ke in front of him.
This made Wen Zhe think uncontrollably: Jiang Han stopped Jiang Ke from continuing just now because of him.
Thinking of this, Wen Zhe couldn’t help but smile bitterly. He was truly pathetic… to actually feel happy because of such a thought.
He knew his love was humble, but he could only watch himself sink into it, unable to save himself.
He loved Jiang Han. Perhaps he had loved him since the first time he saw him. That time at a dinner table full of powerful elites, Jiang Han had cast a beam of light toward him, and he wanted to hold onto it tightly.
Perhaps this was the obsession he couldn’t break free from that beam of light in the depths of his heart. To keep it shining, he guarded it by burning himself in a way that felt like self-sacrifice.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick? I would have had my assistant send medicine over,” Jiang Han said.
Wen Zhe shook his head with a smile. “It’s nothing. I’m already better.”
Jiang Han cleared his throat, then handed him the bag in his hand as if casually. “I bought this for you.”
Wen Zhe was stunned for a moment, and then a look of surprise appeared on his face. This was the first time Jiang Han had personally handed a gift to him. He took the bag and immediately couldn’t wait to open the box inside.
It was a wristwatch a luxury brand, exquisite. But the moment Wen Zhe saw it, the smile on his face faded. It was because he already had this exact watch; it was the one they had picked from the counter when they went to the mall together.
“How is it? Do you like it?” Jiang Han asked.
Wen Zhe looked at the handsome, profound face. He was attached to this harmonious atmosphere, and he was attached to this rare concern.
A stifling sorrow welled up in his heart. Looking at this face he thought about day and night, how could he stop liking him so much? Could he try to take back his feelings little by little? Would it succeed?
A faint smile appeared on Wen Zhe’s face as he looked straight at the watch. “I like it.”

I find the setup of this story a bit confusing, Wen Zhe is a transmigrator playing a role who doesn’t actually like Jiang Hang at all right? But then why is his internal monologue at the end of the chapter here about how much he likes him and how hard it will be to stop liking him?

It’s definitely a bit confusing at first! In The Affectionate Backup is a Heartthrob, Wen Zhe is a transmigrator performing the role of the “affectionate backup” to fulfill specific plot requirements. The confusing monologue you mentioned in your comment is essentially “method acting” on a cosmic level; in this genre, characters often have to simulate genuine emotions so deeply to avoid “Out of Character” (OOC) penalties from their System that the line between their performance and their true self starts to blur. He is likely forcing himself to feel those emotions to ensure the world’s logic remains intact, even if his objective self knows it’s just a job. Thank you for reading ~
