- Chapter 4 - Then Marry in Her Stead
The night air, as summer approached, still carried a hint of coolness.
The jacket draped over her shoulders shielded her from the cold, and a subtle scent drifted into her nostrils.
The car had long since departed, only the bright red taillights visible in the distance.
Bai Nianzhao couldn’t help but clutch the lapel of the jacket with her fingers, but afraid of creasing the garment, she quickly released her grip.
She gazed in the direction the car had left, then suddenly seemed to recall something and frowned in annoyance.
Someone had kindly helped her out and even left a jacket, but she had forgotten to ask for their name.
Still lost in thought, she heard someone calling her from behind.
It was Bai Zhenzhen.
“You brat! Hurry up and get over here!” Bai Zhenzhen glared fiercely at her.
A flicker of timidity crossed Bai Nianzhao’s eyes, and she lowered her head, walking over slowly.
The moment she reached Bai Zhenzhen, a barrage of scolding descended upon her.
“Do you know how much trouble you’ve caused me? I told you to stay home, but you just had to run out and cause a scene, didn’t you? Don’t you see, this is not the kind of occasion someone like you should be at!”
Feeling somewhat wronged, she trembled her eyelashes slightly and whispered in defense, “Madam asked me to come…”
Seeing that she dared to talk back, Bai Zhenzhen became even more irritated and sneered, “My mother tells you to do something and you do it, Bai Nianzhao, you really are a good, obedient dog.”
Bai Nianzhao lowered her long lashes, her face turning a little pale.
Her slender fingers clenched unconsciously into fists, making her knuckles white.
It was only then that Bai Zhenzhen noticed the clothing draped over her, and she suspiciously asked, “Whose jacket is this?”
But Bai Nianzhao didn’t answer, and as someone from the ballroom was calling for her again, she didn’t press the matter further.
“Forget it, that’s not important,” Bai Zhenzhen shot her a look. “You get back home immediately, wait until I’m done with you.”
She had come with Madam Bai in the car.
But on the way back, she could only rely on herself.
A lowly illegitimate daughter, she was not entitled to enjoy anything of the Bai family.
The road was quite quiet, the clearest sound being the click of her high heels meeting the pavement.
The dress and shoes chosen for the banquet were not suitable for long-term wear.
After walking for an unknown duration, Bai Nianzhao’s ankles were starting to hurt from the friction.
She stopped, leaning against a tree by the roadside to rest.
The road was straight, with only the front and the back.
Looking ahead, the outline of a villa was faintly visible.
Looking back, there was the magnificent, glittering ballroom.
In either direction, it was the revelry of the wealthy.
She looked so out of place among them.
Bai Nianzhao truly did not belong here.
She leaned her hand against the tree and looked up at the moon in the sky.
It wasn’t a full moon yet; the crescent moon looked like a small boat drifting across the clouds.
It was only when looking at the moon that she felt as if she had returned to the days before she came to the Bai family.
Bai Nianzhao grew up in a small city. Since she could remember, it had always been her mother raising her through hardship.
Those days were impoverished, yet they were some of Bai Nianzhao’s few beautiful memories.
Later, her mother was diagnosed with cancer.
Late-stage.
Knowing she didn’t have long to live, she gritted her teeth and, taking the then ten-year-old Bai Nianzhao, went to the Bai family.
Father Bai initially wanted to just give them money to send them away, but the woman, facing the end of her life, had become somewhat desperate.
She had suffered her whole life and didn’t want her daughter to follow the same path.
So, she used her own life to secure Bai Nianzhao’s chance to be brought into the family.
The woman jumped from a building, dying in front of many people.
In her arms were a will and a paternity test report proving the relationship between Bai Nianzhao and Father Bai.
The incident caused such a sensation that Father Bai had no choice but to bring Bai Nianzhao home.
An illegitimate daughter who entered the family in such a way—it was understandable how much the Bai family would despise her.
Bai Nianzhao thought that perhaps Bai Zhenzhen was right.
Her existence itself was a mistake.
Her mother was unhappy.
Father Bai was unhappy.
Madam Bai and Bai Zhenzhen were unhappy.
She herself was unhappy.
In this world, it seemed no one welcomed her arrival.
…
…
On the other side, as You Ting entered the house, she saw Father You sitting upright with an angry expression.
Seeing this, she mostly guessed the reason.
The circle wasn’t that big; the words spoken at the banquet must have reached Father You’s ears.
Yet, she showed no reaction, changed her shoes, and prepared to go upstairs.
“Stop right there!” Father You shouted.
You Ting glanced sideways, her tone indifferent: “What is it?”
Seeing her demeanor, Father You’s anger flared even more, and he slammed his hand on the table: “You still dare to ask? Was it you who spread the news about your brother’s injury? Do you know how much loss that will cause to the You family business!”
“I know.”
You Ting raised an eyebrow: “So what?”
What did it matter to her if this corrupt, rotten family went bankrupt?
Father You was stunned, and after he realized what she said, his anger instantly surged.
“You Ting! Do you think you’re so grown up now?! Don’t forget I am your father! You’ve eaten my food and drunk my drinks since you were little!”
You Ting eyed him disdainfully and suddenly curled the corner of her lips.
Her expression was cold; even that small smile seemed chilly.
She spoke, interrupting Father You’s incessant rant: “I’m sorry, you might not be thinking clearly since you’ve gotten older.”
Looking at the man’s livid face, You Ting continued slowly: “Everything I’ve used since I was little came from the money my mother left behind.”
The mother, of course, was not Song Zhiqiu, but the eldest daughter’s biological mother, Yan Hua.
Yan Hua was a genuine young lady of wealth, whose background was several levels above Father You’s.
But perhaps because she was too protected by her family, she was easily tricked by the younger Father You.
Yan Hua married into the You family with an incredibly rich dowry, even severing ties with the Yan family for it.
Unfortunately, she passed away from complications during the birth of the eldest Miss You.
At the end of her life, perhaps she finally saw through the man’s true colors, and with her remaining strength, she left a will in the hospital.
She left all her assets entirely to You Ting.
Sure enough, barely a year after her death, Father You married Song Zhiqiu, the woman he truly longed for, and at that time, Song Zhiqiu was already pregnant.
“Instead of putting on a show of authority here with me.”
You Ting looked at Father You with disgust, withdrew her gaze, and walked unhurriedly up the stairs.
“You should seriously consider how to manage the crisis control when the news breaks tomorrow.”
Father You was so angry that his fingers trembled, stammering “you, you, you” for a long time, unable to form a complete sentence.
This unfilial daughter, how did she become more and more unlikeable after going abroad!
Father You didn’t like You Ting.
Neither the You Ting who used to cautiously try to please him nor the You Ting who now treated him like air.
He didn’t like her.
In this world, the people he loved most would forever be Song Zhiqiu and You Aofeng.
As for You Ting, if he hadn’t been afraid of the Yan family noticing something abnormal and coming after him, he would have abandoned her when she was a child.
Father You frowned deeply.
The news of You Aofeng’s injury could no longer be contained, which was bound to cause a severe blow to the family’s business.
He still had to figure out how to mitigate the damage.
The most troublesome thing was his precious son; unable to accept that he would have to use a wheelchair from now on, You Aofeng had become somewhat self-destructive.
His mind flashed back to when You Ting entered the door.
She was extremely beautiful, and at the age of blossoming youth.
She hadn’t changed out of her evening gown yet, and as she walked step by step, it shimmered with the gorgeous colors of flower petals.
So vibrant.
A sense of resentment welled up in Father You’s heart. Why should his Feng’er suffer in the hospital while You Ting could still squander money and look glamorous outside!
You Ting didn’t know what Father You downstairs was thinking.
Nor was she interested in knowing.
After all, talking to an idiot was likely to lower her intelligence.
She changed out of her dress into comfortable pajamas, then sat on the bed, carefully sorting through her observations from the day.
The male lead, his adolescent angst was incurable.
Song Zhiqiu, the stepmother with the face of a Buddha and the heart of a serpent.
Father You, a gold-digger who was quite a scumbag.
The female lead…
The scene from the banquet earlier popped into her mind, and she “tched.”
She labeled Bai Nianzhao—a timid and cry-prone little pitiable person.
The System said her mission was to help Bai Nianzhao escape the abusive plotline.
You Ting thought carefully and felt that the root of all Bai Nianzhao’s suffering was being pushed to marry You Aofeng in a proxy marriage.
Stopping the proxy marriage was probably impossible.
In a way, Bai Zhenzhen was a person with strong execution skills.
She clearly knew what she wanted, so after learning about You Aofeng’s injury, she would surely rush to find a way to cancel the engagement.
She was probably already discussing the matter with Madam Bai right now.
Moreover, You Ting felt that it might be better for the little pitiable person to come to the You family than to stay in the Bai family.
At least under her nose, she could provide some care.
You Ting’s guess was correct.
After the banquet, Bai Zhenzhen immediately pulled Father Bai and Madam Bai aside.
With a hint of frustration in her expression, she recounted the matter of You Aofeng becoming disabled.
Madam Bai immediately declared, “This marriage must be broken off! A cripple is nowhere near worthy of our Zhenzhen!”
She seemed to have forgotten that they had begged and humbled themselves to secure this engagement in the first place.
Father Bai hesitated slightly: “But…”
To be honest, Bai Zhenzhen was also a bit reluctant.
After all, the You family was a level above theirs, and to win You Aofeng’s favor, she had spent a great deal of effort, only just managing to make You Aofeng treat her slightly differently.
“If we break the engagement,” Father Bai frowned, “we might get a reputation for kicking someone when they’re down.”
A hint of ruthlessness flashed in Bai Zhenzhen’s eyes: “Then a proxy marriage!”
“Let Bai Nianzhao marry in her stead.”
