- Chapter 19 - Returning the Favor
The bouquet was brought home, and Bai Nianzhao found an exquisite vase to put it in.
She slightly trimmed the stems of the tulips, filled the vase with clean water, and carefully wiped the dust from the leaves with a clean, damp cloth.
She placed it in the most prominent spot in the room.
Bai Nianzhao’s favorite colors used to be very simple: black, white, and gray. It wasn’t about personal preference, but simply that such low-key colors were best suited for hiding herself away.
But now, she suddenly realized that, unknowingly, many bright and striking colors had appeared in this room that belonged to her.
The wardrobe was no longer filled with a dull, monotonous darkness, but was instead stacked with new-style, colorful little dresses.
She no longer resisted presenting herself to others and had even slowly begun to hope for a better future.
To become a better version of herself.
And all of this was brought about by her sister.
Bai Nianzhao’s fingers brushed across the tulip petals. The extremely soft touch made her dare not use too much force.
Through such a vibrant color, she seemed to vaguely see that equally eye-catching woman.
Her lips turned slightly upward, and a shallow dimple was squeezed out on her cheek, forming a smile.
The sun outside the window was just right, and that light seemed to shine into her eyes as well.
The heat ignited the fuse, and a weak flame began to burn.
She had always warned herself not to be too greedy.
But human nature was precisely this way: after getting a taste of sweetness, she wasn’t satisfied, longing to possess more, a more enduring clearness.
She was used to being cared for when hurt.
She was used to sitting by the door every day, waiting for that familiar figure.
She was used to sharing all the small joys in her life with someone.
She was used to having a goal she could rely on and pursue.
She lowered her long lashes, finding it difficult to imagine what it would be like to suddenly lose all of this.
What would she do if she had to leave her sister’s side?
Her heart suddenly pounded, carrying a foreign, mysterious, and urgent throb.
Bai Nianzhao covered her chest, her fingertips feeling every powerful beat of her heart.
It was as if she could still hear the drumming of every cell in her blood vessels by her ear, as if something was about to burst forth.
She pursed her lips, and in the end, just stared blankly at the tulips on the windowsill for a long time.
The next day at breakfast, You Ting suddenly remembered something and looked at Bai Nianzhao: “Are you free this weekend? Come with me somewhere.”
Bai Nianzhao answered without thinking: “Okay.”
You Ting raised an eyebrow and smiled: “Such a quick agreement?”
The child said with a serious face: “In my heart, Sister’s matters are always the first priority.”
Her eyes were pure, her round pupils like ink-washed grapes, gazing unblinkingly at You Ting.
Her tone was so earnest.
As if, at this moment, her world only contained You Ting.
You Ting’s hand holding the chopsticks paused, and she instinctively avoided Bai Nianzhao’s gaze.
She couldn’t describe the feeling in her heart, but the corner of her lips curved up first.
“You’re not a waste of my affection.”
She stood up, packed a few things, and gestured to Bai Nianzhao: “Let’s go, I’ll go to work and drop you off at class on the way.”
Bai Nianzhao picked up her backpack and obediently followed.
When getting out of the car, she opened the door, paused, and then turned back to hand You Ting something.
With a noticeable flush of shyness on her face, Bai Nianzhao lowered her head, not daring to make eye contact with You Ting, and forced herself to say calmly: “A return gift.”
Then she scurried off and jogged straight upstairs.
You Ting curiously picked up the item. It was small, meticulously wrapped in packaging paper, and only about half the size of a palm.
She weighed it; it was very light.
Busy rushing to the company, You Ting didn’t open it right then and there. It wasn’t until she arrived at the office that she took the item out.
Come to think of it, this was the first time the little rabbit had given her a gift.
With a sense of novelty, You Ting slowly and deliberately tore open the wrapping paper.
It was unexpected, yet somewhat reasonable.
Inside was a stack of celadon paper, densely covered with scriptures copied in gold ink.
You Ting was stunned.
Although the paper was thin, she suddenly felt it was as heavy as a thousand jun.
Her fingers traced over every character. They were very familiar; she had seen them before. They were Bai Nianzhao’s handwriting.
Bai Nianzhao’s figure appeared in her mind.
With so many sheets, she didn’t know how long the child had spent copying, or which day she had started.
You Ting couldn’t read the text, but she could feel that every stroke of the scripture contained the most sincere prayer.
She flipped through the pages one by one until the very end, where Bai Nianzhao had written:
“May all sins and evils fall upon me.”
Her heart suddenly stirred.
You Ting lowered her long eyes, her expression shifting a thousand times, finally settling into a complex, quiet sigh.
Despite living such an unsatisfying life herself, she was still willing to pray for You Ting, to take on all the suffering and sorrow in the world for her.
“What a…” You Ting murmured softly, “Fool.”
In the afternoon, the secretary assistant knocked and entered, informing You Ting: “Mr. You is convening a board meeting. Please attend as an observer.”
Observing was a pretext; the real intention was to make her personally witness You Aofeng officially taking over the project and to knock her down a peg.
You Ting timed her arrival and calmly took the elevator to the conference room.
It wasn’t until her figure disappeared that the staff in the pantry dared to quietly start discussing.
“I heard that Young Master You is back at the company. Doesn’t that put the eldest daughter in a very awkward position now?”
“Didn’t you see that they’ve already called a board meeting? I reckon Mr. You is planning to strongly promote the Young Master.”
“If I were the eldest daughter, I’d be incredibly upset, having such a father who favors sons over daughters.”
“I just wonder who will win this time, Young Master You or the eldest daughter.”
“I think the eldest daughter is in trouble. After all, Young Master You’s professional ability was decent before his accident, and even after the accident, he still has Mr. You’s support.”
Since the company was already in this state, and they might be laid off tomorrow anyway, they simply started gossiping without any restraint.
Meanwhile, You Ting had already arrived at the entrance of the conference room.
The major shareholders of the company had mostly arrived and nodded when they saw You Ting.
You Ting smiled and nodded in return, finding a seat and sitting down casually.
After a while, Mr. You walked in, pushing You Aofeng’s wheelchair. The father and son were fashionably late.
Mr. You coughed heavily a few times to clear his throat, “Gentlemen, the purpose of calling you all here today for this board meeting is to announce—”
“I plan to hand over the project in the east city zone to my son, Aofeng, to manage.”
There was a slight murmur below, but Mr. You’s face didn’t change as he continued, “Everyone here has witnessed Aofeng’s ability before his accident.”
“Although he is currently…” Mr. You paused, “This problem is easily solved. I will have You Ting assist him from the side, so there should be no issues.”
He looked around and asked, “Does anyone object?”
Amidst the whispers, a clear female voice suddenly rang out, loud and firm:
“I object.”
The voice carried a familiar sense of annoyance, and Mr. You immediately frowned, looking toward the source of the sound.
As expected, he met You Ting’s half-smiling eyes.
She hadn’t even stood up, leaning back against the chair, her legs casually crossed.
After meeting Mr. You’s gaze, she slowly and lightly repeated: “I object.”
Mr. You had anticipated that she wouldn’t easily comply, so he didn’t explode in anger.
It was You Aofeng who couldn’t hold back, speaking first: “On what grounds do you object?”
This was clearly a squabble within the You family. The other shareholders present tacitly remained silent, waiting to see how things would unfold.
That’s right, what right did You Ting, a small department manager with no real power who had just joined the company, have to say she objected?
Mr. You smiled, with the kind of tolerance reserved for a child acting out of turn: “My daughter is being silly. Please excuse her, everyone.”
He planned to ignore You Ting and continue: “If no one objects, then we shall…”
Before he could finish, a ‘bang’ suddenly sounded—the noise of a stack of documents being slammed onto the table.
The noise clearly originated from You Ting’s side.
The impatience in Mr. You’s eyes became increasingly obvious. He lost his patience: “What exactly do you want to do? If you keep acting up, get out!”
You Ting chuckled, her finger resting on the folder on the table.
With a slight push, she slid it across the table toward Mr. You.
She raised an eyebrow: “Didn’t you ask me on what grounds?”
“Open it and see.”
Her red lips curved into an arrogant arc, like Medusa, beautiful and dangerous in mythology.
You Ting said: “This is a surprise I specially prepared for you two.”
Her fearlessness made Mr. You feel uneasy.
You Aofeng, next to him, couldn’t sit still and grabbed the document: “I’d like to see what tricks you can play.”
But not long after opening it, You Aofeng’s face slowly became grave.
“No, how is this possible!” He was in disbelief, his speed of flipping through the pages getting faster and faster.
You Aofeng’s fingers trembled slightly from the shock, and he cried out distractedly: “Fake! It must be forged!”
In his heart, everything in the You family should belong to him.
Since childhood, You Aofeng knew he was different from others.
He seemed to be favored by fate, effortlessly possessing everything others could hardly achieve.
As for You Ting, she was insignificant.
Even after his leg injury, You Aofeng firmly believed he could stand up again.
No one could take away what belonged to him.
But now, this document actually showed that the majority of the shares in the You Corporation had been transferred to You Ting’s name!
How could he believe this!
Seeing his son on the verge of madness, Mr. You quickly picked up the document for a look, and his pupils instantly constricted.
Having worked in the business world for many years, he should have been able to remain composed no matter what happened.
But now, his face showed the same shocked expression as You Aofeng.
The “surprise” You Ting mentioned was clearly a thunderbolt of shock for the two father and son.
Mr. You tried to find a trace of fabrication, but clearly, this was a flawless original.
He stumbled back a step, then abruptly looked up at You Ting.
The young woman rested her chin on one hand, her posture lazy, her lips curling up as if watching a show.
After enjoying their loss of composure, You Ting finally smiled slightly: “Now, am I qualified?”
Mr. You was distraught: “You, how could you have done this…”
Yan Hua did leave You Ting a lot of wealth, but that amount of property was far from enough to acquire so many shares.
Unless!
In a flash of realization, Mr. You seemed to have suddenly figured something out, and he almost failed to catch his breath.
You Ting alone definitely couldn’t have accomplished such a massive feat, but with the addition of the Yan family, it would certainly not be difficult!
But when exactly did You Ting connect with the Yan family? He hadn’t noticed at all…
You Ting didn’t care about the turmoil in the minds of the You father and son.
She raised a finger, twirling a strand of her hair around it.
“By my count of the shares, what I hold right now is exactly 1% more than Mr. You’s.”
“I am now the largest shareholder of the company.”
You Ting straightened up, a sharp light flashing in her dark eyes, and smiled at Mr. You:
“I say I object. Is there a problem?”
