- Chapter 17 - The Engagement
The light was fragmented into blurred, unclear pieces by the overflowing tears, and Bai Nianzhao could only vaguely make out the familiar figure of the person in front of her.
As she got closer, everything became much clearer.
A sweet scent, tinged with freesia, was the first to reach her nose.
The woman’s eyes were aloof, yet they curved slightly downward when they met Bai Nianzhao’s gaze.
Long lashes rested on her eyelids, making her inky pupils appear exceptionally gentle.
A hand landed on the top of Bai Nianzhao’s head, stroking it very lightly.
“Don’t cry.”
You Ting said, “I’m here.”
The world brightened, like a child who had suddenly received candy, and all the grievances that Bai Nianzhao thought she could bear until then suddenly surged out.
A few sobs escaped her throat, and she indistinctly called out, “Jiejie (Sister)…”
You Ting sighed softly.
The little white rabbit, with moist eyes, looked up at her, appearing wronged and pitiful, as if looking at the only light she could grasp in the darkness.
Such a gaze always softened one’s heart.
“Why are you crying even harder?” You Ting lowered her voice a little, reaching out a finger to wipe away the tears from the corners of Bai Nianzhao’s eyes.
The tear drops on her fingertip were slightly hot.
You Ting raised an eyebrow and said, “Watch me help you vent your anger.”
She then took Bai Nianzhao’s hand and walked toward Song Qiu.
Song Qiu forced a fake smile, “Xiao Ting, why are you suddenly back?”
“My surname is You, and this is the You family,” You Ting glanced at her, “Do I need to report to you when I return?”
Song Qiu froze, frowning and putting on a wronged expression, “It’s my fault, I spoke incorrectly and upset Xiao Ting.”
“That’s enough,” You Ting was quite impatient, “Your man isn’t here, so don’t use this act on me.”
You Aofeng, seeing the situation, immediately pushed his wheelchair forward a bit, staring hostilely at You Ting, “Do you have any respect for seniority? How dare you speak to Mother like that!”
“Damao, besides your leg injury, perhaps you should get your head checked,” You Ting chuckled, her voice cold, “She’s your mother, not mine.”
“I didn’t come here to talk nonsense with you. I only have one question for you—”
A trace of coldness flashed in her eyes as she looked at Song Qiu, then at You Aofeng, and slowly asked:
“How did you bully my person?”
Silence filled the room.
The servants, sensing trouble, had already cleverly retreated, leaving only the few people in confrontation in the living room.
For some reason, ever since You Ting returned to the country, Song Qiu felt that this girl had become increasingly difficult to deal with.
Sometimes, meeting her gaze gave her a chilling sensation down her spine.
She subconsciously didn’t want to escalate the matter and tried to smooth things over with an awkward smile: “Xiao Ting, what are you saying? I merely had Miss Bai brought back to live here.”
“Miss Bai and Xiao Feng are already engaged. Both logically and emotionally, she should be at the You family, cultivating their relationship with Xiao Feng.”
Her voice was gentle and sincere, but it couldn’t hide a sense of calculation.
You Ting lowered her gaze, looking at the bowl of steaming medicine on the table, and asked with a half-smile, “What, is serving tea and pouring water considered cultivating a relationship?”
This time, it was You Aofeng who answered her.
“Since she’s my fiancée, taking care of me is a matter of course!”
You Aofeng sneered at Bai Nianzhao, adding a hint of disdain, “My willingness to acknowledge her identity and let her take care of me is already her blessing.”
You Ting was almost amused.
She released Bai Nianzhao’s hand, walked forward alone, and approached the coffee table, leaning down to pick up the medicine bowl.
Bai Nianzhao hastily warned, “Jiejie, be careful, it’s hot!”
You Ting turned her head slightly, giving her a reassuring look.
Then she turned back, looked at You Aofeng, and slowly curled her lips into a smile.
In those cold, inky eyes, there seemed to be a faint, light blue shimmer, appearing mysterious and unsettling.
You Aofeng inexplicably felt a bad premonition. His hand was on the armrest of the wheelchair, and he instinctively wanted to retreat.
But it was too late.
You Ting used force in her hand, and the medicine soup in the bowl splashed entirely in You Aofeng’s direction.
The distance between them was neither too far nor too close, just enough to prevent You Aofeng from reacting in time.
Most of the liquid accurately spilled onto You Aofeng.
He was only wearing thin pajamas, and the scorching temperature instantly spread across the drenched areas.
You Aofeng’s face twisted from the scalding pain. Song Qiu screamed and rushed over to check, loudly shouting, “Help! Someone! Bring burn ointment quickly!”
Lifting his clothes, she could see a patch of reddened skin.
Song Qiu turned around, for the first time tearing off her mask of false kindness, glaring fiercely at You Ting: “If you have any complaints, direct them at me! Xiao Feng is already like this, and you’re still so malicious towards him!”
“Malicious?” You Ting tilted her head, as if puzzled.
“I just saw how eager he was to drink the medicine, so I wanted to personally bring it over to him.”
“However, oh dear,” You Ting pretended to regret, “I just accidentally slipped my hand.”
Such insincere words, of course, enraged Song Qiu and You Aofeng, making their eyes burn with fury.
You Ting curved her lips slightly and then slowly said, “So, you know it hurts too.”
“Also, it seems you didn’t quite understand what I said back then.”
You Ting’s expression turned cold, and she spoke word by word: “I said, I brought Bai Nianzhao back. You don’t want her, but I do.”
She beckoned to Bai Nianzhao.
Bai Nianzhao bit her lip and rushed over, clutching her backpack.
You Ting lowered her gaze, reached out, and easily removed the silver ring from Bai Nianzhao’s fingertip.
Then, like throwing away trash, she casually tossed it aside.
“Engagement?”
You Ting smiled faintly: “It’s gone now.”
Song Qiu was furious, yet worried about You Aofeng’s burns. She pointed at You Ting, “You, you, you” for a long time but couldn’t utter a complete sentence.
The servants were busy applying medicine to You Aofeng and cleaning the floor.
It was chaos.
Taking advantage of the gap, You Ting again took Bai Nianzhao’s hand and left.
The bodyguards outside the door gathered around, then paused in unison when their eyes met You Ting’s—
The eldest daughter is still the eldest daughter, and the future heir of the You family is still uncertain…
One of them was sensible enough to respectfully return Bai Nianzhao’s phone with both hands.
You Ting slowly retracted her gaze, picked up their belongings, and led Bai Nianzhao away unimpeded.
The car was parked outside the gate.
Just as Bai Nianzhao settled into the passenger seat, the person beside her suddenly leaned toward her.
Two slender fingers lifted her chin, meeting You Ting’s scrutinizing gaze.
She blinked uncomfortably and heard You Ting chuckle softly: “Now you truly look like a rabbit.”
Bai Nianzhao was puzzled. Her eyes darted around, and she happened to catch her own reflection in the rear-view mirror.
Her eyes were large and round, and the redness around her eyes when she cried was especially noticeable.
Her pupils seemed to be covered in a mist of water, making her look particularly innocent because of her daze.
She really did look like a rabbit…
Bai Nianzhao lowered her gaze, a little embarrassed, twirling her fingers together. She nervously asked in a soft voice, “Did I cause trouble for Jiejie again?”
“No,” You Ting said carelessly, very seriously, “I haven’t been able to stand You Aofeng for a long time.”
She withdrew her hand and then took Bai Nianzhao’s wrist.
Seeing the slightly red fingers from the heat, she took out the ointment that the restaurant had previously given them from the armrest box and slowly applied it while looking down.
“Besides, breaking off the engagement with You Aofeng should be a good thing.”
The car window wasn’t closed, and as You Ting slightly lowered her head, her long hair was lifted by the wind, brushing against the back of Bai Nianzhao’s hand.
It tickled.
“Bai Nianzhao.”
She heard You Ting’s voice sounding in her ear, like a god granting a blessing to Her followers.
“You are free.”
