Bai Nianzhao then remembered that Yu Ting had, in fact, been serious about offering to pick her up and drop her off. Her heart stirred slightly. This was the first time she had experienced the feeling of being cared for since her mother’s death.
“By the way,” Yu Ting inquired, “Did you successfully register?”
Mentioning the training class, Bai Nianzhao hummed, her eyes lighting up slightly: “They’re sending out the class schedule today. The official classes will start in a few days.”
Yu Ting thought this was quite good. She had managed to take the heroine out of the Yu family and help her find a goal worth striving for. The heroine would no longer be like the one in the original novel—a dodder vine that clung to Yu Aofeng, even though he abused her thousands of times. Once the engagement between the two of them was completely resolved and Bai Nianzhao embarked on her own life path, Yu Ting’s mission would be nearing completion.
Yu Ting’s lips curved into a pleased smile. After driving for a while, the car stopped in front of a secluded and elegant restaurant. A waiter immediately jogged over, opened the car door, and greeted them professionally: “Good afternoon, Miss Yu!”
“Your reserved table is right ahead, please follow me.”
Yu Ting paused, then spoke to the nearest waiter: “Please send an ointment for promoting blood circulation and removing stasis to our table.”
In such a large restaurant, they inevitably encountered all sorts of guests, so they typically kept a supply of various everyday items on hand.
The waiter nodded: “Certainly, please wait a moment.”
Yu Ting and Bai Nianzhao followed the guide to their seats. Not long after they sat down, someone delivered the ointment and carefully explained the usage and dosage. “Rub some on,” Yu Ting’s gaze dropped to Bai Nianzhao’s wrist, “Look how swollen it is.”
Bai Nianzhao opened the packaging and squeezed some ointment onto the fingers of her other hand. The crystalline, solid ointment had no harsh smell; instead, it exuded a faint, grass-like fragrance. She carefully applied it to her reddened wrist. The ointment quickly melted into a faint film on her skin under the friction of her warm fingertips.
Their seat was by the window, and the light shone on her slightly damp skin, causing it to shimmer subtly. Bai Nianzhao happened to look up and met Yu Ting’s deep, dark eyes. They were a perfectly pure black, with a trace of faint blue occasionally flickering in the light, adding a mysterious quality to the already captivating abyss.
The dishes hadn’t arrived yet, and the woman seemed merely bored, content to watch her apply the medicine. Yet, under Yu Ting’s gaze, Bai Nianzhao felt inexplicably self-conscious, and her fingers applying the ointment paused.
Yu Ting keenly noticed this and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Bai Nianzhao shook her head, shielding her hand beneath the table, and masked her reaction: “I’m a little hungry.”
Yu Ting’s eyebrows lowered, and she smiled with a hint of playfulness: “I thought you wanted me to help you apply the ointment.”
“No,” Bai Nianzhao quickly defended, “How could I trouble my sister with such a small matter?”
“Is that so?” the woman opposite seemed to sigh regretfully, then said leisurely, “I would be quite happy to.”
Bai Nianzhao was startled, and her face suddenly felt hot under Yu Ting’s amused gaze. She quickly lowered her head, pretending to be thirsty as she reached for the teapot to pour water. But her movement was too hurried, and she forgot her hand was injured, making her lightly gasp in pain.
Another hand reached the teapot lid one step ahead of her. The long, slender fingers gripped the handle, lifted the teapot, and gently tilted it to pour a cup of tea. Thin steam curled up from the clear tea. She lowered her eyes, her long, dark lashes like feathers, gently resting against her eyelids, looking extremely focused. The sound of pouring tea suddenly stopped. Yu Ting pushed the clear teacup towards Bai Nianzhao and said softly, “Be careful not to burn yourself.”
The tea was crystal clear, and Bai Nianzhao could see her reflection in it by looking down. A breeze picked up, stirring faint ripples on the water’s surface. It must have been truly hot today, as she felt her face getting even hotter.
— In the Yu family mansion. The air conditioner was running in the room, but it could not extinguish the internal restlessness.
“Smash!” The sound of glass violently hitting the floor and shattering.
The Yu family servants exchanged looks and sighed silently. This was just another fit of temper from Yu Aofeng since he had returned to his room today.
Finally, a slightly older servant nervously picked up the tools to clean up. Yu Aofeng didn’t even lift his head, casually grabbing the nearest object on the desk and throwing it toward the door again. “Get out!”
The servant had no choice but to retreat, secretly lamenting that the young master’s temper had become worse since his leg injury.
Inside the room, Yu Aofeng leaned on the table with a grim expression, trying to get up from his wheelchair. Time passed slowly, and cold, strenuous sweat beaded on his forehead. But no matter how hard he struggled, his legs felt weighted down with immense gravity, showing no sign of rising. Finally, he abruptly squeezed his eyes shut and slammed a fist onto the desk.
Various scattered items lay on the floor. Nestled between a pile of books was his mobile phone with a shattered screen. The screen still showed the page from before it was smashed—a chat with Bai Zhenzhen. Next to the message box Yu Aofeng had sent was a conspicuous red exclamation mark. The skin on his fist was scraped and bleeding, but he didn’t care at all, only clenching his jaw with fierce resentment.
Yu Aofeng’s huge disturbance immediately drew Song Zhiquiu, who rushed over in a panic. The assistant who had pushed Yu Aofeng out earlier had reported the day’s events to her. She understood how distressed Yu Aofeng was and spoke cautiously: “Xiaofeng, don’t be like this. That kind of opportunistic woman like Bai Zhenzhen is not worth it!”
Yu Aofeng’s jaw was tight. He remembered the scene this morning where the rich playboy and Bai Zhenzhen had humiliated him together, and he slowly opened his eyes. “I know.”
He spoke hoarsely: “I will not spare a single one of the people who have insulted and wronged me.”
“It’s good you’re thinking clearly, it’s good,” Song Zhiquiu breathed a sigh of relief, “Our Xiaofeng is so outstanding; what kind of woman can’t he find?”
“Mom will find someone for you tomorrow. I will definitely find a girl a thousand times better than that Bai Zhenzhen!”
“No.” Yu Aofeng raised his eyes and said gloomily: “Mom, have you forgotten? Didn’t the Bai family send someone over?”
Song Zhiquiu was startled: “That illegitimate daughter…”
Yu Aofeng said: “They all want to see me become a joke. I will live well, even if it means marrying an illegitimate daughter.” He knew Bai Zhenzhen always looked down on Bai Nianzhao, so he would marry Bai Nianzhao and make Bai Zhenzhen regret it!
“Right,” Yu Aofeng suddenly remembered, “Where is that woman?” He frowned and said impatiently: “Didn’t she have an engagement with me? Why isn’t she here to take care of me?”
Song Zhiquiu thought for a moment. “It seems Yu Ting took her out.”
Yu Aofeng snorted, “Yu Ting has been too arrogant lately. She truly thinks the Yu family will definitely be hers.”
“In another two days, I will also return to the company.”
Song Zhiquiu initially wanted to stop him, but then she changed her mind: “That’s fine, too, so the media won’t keep writing nonsense all day.”
Yu Aofeng’s face was dark. He told Song Zhiquiu: “Mom, have someone bring that illegitimate daughter back. She is engaged to me; what kind of impression does it give to be out all day?”
Song Zhiquiu did not like Bai Nianzhao, but she always obeyed her son. Moreover, Yu Aofeng indeed needed someone for close personal care now. That illegitimate daughter was barely acceptable. She nodded and replied, “Alright, I’ll instruct someone to go later.”
Yu Aofeng squeezed the soda can in his hand until it was deformed. He looked up at the green shade outside the window, but his eyes were filled with cold determination. What if he was in a wheelchair? He could still look down on the world!
— Two days later.
Yu Ting still spent her day leisurely at the company. After clocking out, she drove to pick up Bai Nianzhao.
However, she waited for a long time in front of the training class building but did not see the familiar figure. She frowned and picked up her phone to dial Bai Nianzhao’s number. A long beeping sound came through the receiver, but no one answered.
A bad feeling immediately welled up in Yu Ting’s heart. She got out of the car and went straight upstairs to the training class to inquire. The front desk staff told her that Bai Nianzhao had already left after the class ended.
Yu Ting then called the Dreamland South of the River mansion, asking Uncle Mo if Bai Nianzhao had returned home. She received the same negative answer.
Yu Ting leaned against the car door. The sky was bright, but her expression gradually turned cold. A conjecture leaped into her mind. She got back into the car, stepped on the accelerator, and headed toward the Yu family’s direction.
