- Chapter 38.1 - Last-Minute Change of Heart
When Meng Xue first returned to the country, the company hadn’t made arrangements for her, so she was temporarily staying at Tang Jing’s place. Due to her recording schedule, she had actually spent no more than five days living in the villa.
While she was recording the show, Ying Tianhe had already arranged for someone to tidy up the employee dormitory.
Early the next morning, Ying knocked on the villa’s door and said to Meng Xue, “Xiao Xue, the company has prepared your dormitory. You can move in today, just bring your belongings. Take advantage of the day off.”
Meng Xue knew she couldn’t stay at Teacher Tang’s place for too long. Staying here initially had been out of necessity. Now that she had a place of her own, lingering any longer would only cause trouble for Teacher Tang.
“Moving out?” Tang Jing, who had just woken up, heard the news and immediately looked at Meng Xue.
Meng Xue replied apologetically, “Teacher Tang, I’ve caused you a lot of trouble staying here this whole time. Now that Sister Ying has found me a place, I should move out.”
Tang Jing gave a quiet “Mm,” poured herself a glass of warm water from the kitchen, and glanced at the two in the living room. “Moving out right now?”
“Just today is fine,” Ying Tianhe said casually. Right now, she had more important matters to discuss with Tang Jing.
She asked Meng Xue to go ahead and pack her things if she had time, while she and Tang Jing talked first.
Meng Xue nodded. “Okay, Sister Ying.” Then she turned to Tang Jing. “Teacher Tang, I made some congee, it’s in the pot. You can have some when you’re hungry.”
Tang Jing gave a slight nod.
Watching Meng Xue walk away, Ying sighed. “Having Xiao Xue stay with you wasn’t so bad. At least she could make breakfast for you in the mornings, you’re usually too lazy to bother.” She shot Tang Jing a sidelong glance.
To avoid another lecture, Tang Jing changed the subject. “Sister Ying, what did you want to talk about?”
“About your collaboration with Sun Sijia, I’ve already secured it for you.”
Meng Xue, who was climbing the stairs, stiffened slightly at these words. Her lips pressed together, her eyelids lowered, and her eyes filled with disappointment.
Tang Jing seemed to sense something and glanced toward the staircase, catching only a glimpse of Meng Xue heading to the second floor. Though her back appeared normal, Tang Jing couldn’t shake the feeling that she was upset.
“What’s wrong?” Ying asked, noticing her distraction and following her gaze but saw nothing.
Tang Jing withdrew her gaze and shook her head. “Nothing.”
When Meng Xue had first moved in, she had only brought one suitcase. So when it was time to leave, she only had that same suitcase to take with her. As she was about to leave the room with her luggage, her eyes fell on the white baseball cap hanging on the rack. Almost unconsciously, she reached for it, tucking it into her suitcase with a guilty conscience.
She could always buy another cap, but this one had been given to her by Teacher Tang, who had a matching black one. Together, they looked like a couple’s set.
She carried her suitcase downstairs.
The two below looked up at the sound.
Tang Jing immediately stood and walked over, taking the suitcase from her. “Let me.”
Meng Xue didn’t argue, nodding slightly. “Thank you, Teacher Tang.”
Hiding her own thoughts, Tang Jing gently ruffled the girl’s hair. “No need.” Then she turned and headed downstairs.
That simple gesture instantly lifted the gloom in Meng Xue’s heart. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t suppress the smile tugging at her lips.
“Are we going now?” Ying Tianhe asked.
Tang Jing replied, “Why not stay for dinner? There’s plenty of food in the fridge. Once we head to the set in a few days, it might go to waste.”
Ying Tianhe thought of Tang Jing’s cooking skills and couldn’t help but feel tempted. She nodded, “Sure.”
Meng Xue wasn’t one to stand on ceremony either. She nodded, leaned her suitcase against the wall, and walked toward the kitchen. “Teacher Tang, let me help you.”
“Alright,” Tang Jing didn’t refuse.
Ying Tianhe, still swamped with work, took her phone and stepped onto the balcony to make a call.
The kitchen was left with just Tang Jing and Meng Xue. Though they didn’t talk much, their interactions were comfortable.
Especially during those two months of filming the show, they had grown accustomed to cooking together. Now, they worked seamlessly in sync.
By the time Ying Tianhe finished her call and came back inside, several dishes both meat and vegetables were already laid out on the table, looking incredibly appetizing.
Tang Jing carried out the soup while Meng Xue brought the bowls and chopsticks.
“Go get the rice,” Tang Jing shot her a cool glance.
Realizing she hadn’t helped at all, Ying Tianhe guiltily rubbed her nose and hurried to the kitchen to bring out the rice that had been prepared earlier.
During the meal, Ying Tianhe tried to strike up a conversation with Tang Jing, only to be shut down with a curt “No talking while eating.” She grumbled inwardly, wondering when such a rule had ever existed.
In the afternoon, Ying Tianhe left with Meng Xue. When the door closed, the entire villa was left with only Tang Jing inside.
For the first time, she felt the villa was too quiet.
The ringing of her phone irritated Tang Jing. But when she saw who it was, she flopped back down and answered, “What?”
Hearing the lazy tone on the other end, Ying Tianhe gritted her teeth. “What do you mean, ‘what’? Today’s the day you’re supposed to accompany Xiaoxue to meet Director Zhao. Did you forget?”
Two or three seconds later, the blankets shifted as Tang Jing struggled to crawl out of bed. Propping her forehead with one hand, her eyes still bleary, she muttered, “I’m up. I’ll be there in half an hour.”
“Hurry up. Xiaoxue is already here,” Ying Tianhe said before hanging up. She then turned to the other side of the desk with a smile. “Xiaoxue, have you had breakfast yet? Should we grab something downstairs while we wait for her?”
Meng Xue nodded with a smile. “Sure.”
When Tang Jing arrived by car, she saw the two of them eating at a breakfast shop, chatting happily about something.
“Good morning, Teacher Tang,” Meng Xue’s eyes brightened the moment she saw her. She scooted over and asked, “Would you like to join us for breakfast?”
Tang Jing sat down beside her and glanced at the untouched food on the table. “Are you both full already?”
“Pretty much. These are all for you,” Ying Tianhe said.
After breakfast, assistant Mengmeng arrived.
Ying Tianhe checked her watch. “Let’s go. If we drive now, we should arrive by noon.”
Tang Jing and Meng Xue had already received the script the day before. The title was Dark Colors, a story about urban romance.
The male and female leads were in a relationship, while the supporting characters drove the plot.
In the drama, Tang Jing and Meng Xue played a pair of rivals who were secretly lovers, no emotional attachment, just physical intimacy.
When Sister Ying had mentioned two days ago that these rivals were sweet on each other in private, Tang Jing had been surprised.
Now, reading the script, she realized that in the early stages, there was no emotional connection between the rivals just the desires of adults.
By the mid-stage, they even lost contact for a while. It wasn’t until the later stages, due to a misunderstanding between the male and female leads, that the second female lead was sidelined, and Tang Jing’s character, the fifth female lead, made her appearance.
