- Chapter 27 - I'm Very Disappointed in You
Tang Jing placed the dishes on the table and was about to take off her apron to call Meng Xue back from the backyard for dinner when Meng Xue returned, drenched from head to toe.
“Teacher Tang.” Meng Xue’s eyes were slightly red, but she forced a smile. The feeling of her clothes clinging tightly to her body was unbearable.
Fortunately, the clothes she wore today were thick, otherwise, she would have been exposed by now. Even so, she still felt utterly humiliated.
Tang Jing glanced at the cameraman, who hesitated for a moment before shifting the camera away.
“Go inside and change first. We’ll talk later,” Tang Jing said.
“Mm.” Meng Xue sniffled and went inside.
Though the weather was warm and getting drenched might not have been a big deal, Tang Jing still went to the kitchen to prepare some ginger soup.
By the time Meng Xue changed and came out, Tang Jing had just finished brewing a bowl of ginger soup. “Come here and drink this.”
Meng Xue obediently sat at the dining table. When she saw that Teacher Tang had actually made ginger soup for her, she froze for a moment. For some reason, her eyes reddened again.
All the grievances she had endured from Sun Sijia came rushing back, and she sat there with her head lowered.
Tang Jing had initially wanted to ask how she had managed to drench herself while watering the plants, but before she could speak, she noticed that Meng Xue seemed to be crying.
Meanwhile, the live-stream audience was in an uproar, especially those who had witnessed the entire incident. The barrage of comments exploded.
[What the hell is Sun Sijia’s problem? Xiaoxue was just trying to help her, and she splashed water all over her!]
[Exactly! And she doesn’t even realize it, thinking it’s just a joke?]
[Sun Sijia must be out of her mind. What kind of joke is that?]
[Wuwuwu, Teacher Tang, please help our Xiaoxue!]
Seeing her senior in distress, Tang Jing’s heart ached. But due to the system’s restrictions, she had to suppress her concern and only show the demeanor of a caring colleague. She awkwardly sat down beside Meng Xue and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Her question only made Meng Xue feel even more wronged. A couple of choked sobs escaped her throat before she remembered they were still live-streaming. She quickly stifled her tears, turned slightly away, and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, forcing herself to stay composed. “I’m fine.”
Yet her fragile composure only made her seem more pitiable—so much so that Tang Jing nearly disregarded the system’s warnings.
After all, this was the person she had cherished in her heart all along. Seeing the one she loved crying in distress was unbearable for anyone.
She abruptly stood up and was about to leave.
“Teacher Tang!” Meng Xue was startled by her sudden movement, forgetting to hide her tear-streaked face as she looked up in surprise.
The camera happened to zoom in on her face at that moment.
Now, it wasn’t just Meng Xue’s fans who were heartbroken even casual viewers felt a pang of sympathy.
[Is Meng Xue crying?]
[Dammit, Sun Sijia, that little green tea bitch!]
[Sun Sijia was laughing when she splashed water on Meng Xue. Does she think that’s romantic? Bullshit!]
Sun Sijia did indeed think it was romantic. Returning to her own place, she hummed a cheerful tune, clearly in high spirits.
However, Tian Qi frowned. “You’re soaked, and you’re still this happy?”
Sun Sijia, too pleased to argue today, shot her a sidelong glance and smirked. “You wouldn’t understand.”
Tian Qi twitched the corner of her mouth. She truly didn’t understand and had no desire to exchange another word with her. If it weren’t for the show recording, she wouldn’t even bother sharing the same space with the other person.
Knock knock.
The sound at the door drew both their attention.
“Who is it?” Sun Sijia, in high spirits and seeing everything in a positive light, cheerfully trotted over to open the door. The moment the door swung open, her smile froze, and she instinctively took a step back before steadying herself and forcing a smile. “Sister Tang, why are you—”
“Did you do it on purpose?” Tang Jing, taller than her, looked down with an air of superiority.
“What?” Sun Sijia’s expression blanked for a second, completely baffled by Tang Jing’s words.
Tang Jing gazed at her with disappointment. “Sun Sijia, you’ve really let me down.”
This was the first time since her rejected confession that Tang Jing had spoken to her so bluntly. The words sent Sun Sijia into a panic. “Sister Tang, ”
“What’s wrong, Teacher Tang?” Tian Qi, noticing the tension, hurried over and glanced uncertainly at Sun Sijia. It was the first time she’d ever seen Sun Sijia so flustered.
“Teacher Tang.” Meng Xue also rushed over, having hastily changed her clothes without even drying her hair.
The director could practically smell the trending topics and immediately signaled the cameraman to capture every moment.
With all four gathered, the scene was nothing short of dramatic. The audience was riveted, afraid to miss a single moment of this unfolding spectacle.
Normally, Sun Sijia would have greeted Meng Xue with a cheerful “senior,” but Tang Jing’s words had thrown her into such disarray that she forgot to acknowledge Meng Xue altogether.
And right now, Meng Xue had no intention of speaking to her. Ever since this junior had playfully splashed water on her, she’d resolved to keep her distance.
Thus, silence hung heavily among the three.
Tian Qi, standing on the sidelines, blinked rapidly, sensing the unmistakable aura of a battlefield, one where she was perilously close to getting caught in the crossfire.
Leaving now would be awkward, but staying was equally uncomfortable. For a moment, she was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
The audience, initially just enjoying the drama, burst into laughter at Tian Qi’s visibly awkward expression.
[Look at Tian Qi, so awkward she could dig a hole with her toes.]
[Three bedrooms and a living room? No problem.]
[Tian Qi: Wanna run, but can’t escape…]
[How are you sending voice messages in the comments?]
While the audience joked around, the silence among Tang Jing and the others finally broke.
Sun Sijia, snapping out of her daze, noticed Meng Xue’s presence and forced a smile. “Senior.”
Meng Xue pressed her lips together and gave a slight nod nothing more. Whether it was Tang Jing’s presence or her own disappointment with this junior, she didn’t offer the warm greeting she usually would.
Sun Sijia noticed the change and frowned. “Senior, what’s wrong?” Her first instinct was to glare at Tang Jing, but then she remembered the earlier words and her expression twisted into a mix of panic and confusion.
It was pure reflex. Over the years, whenever she was upset with Tang Jing, she’d react this way and Tang Jing had always indulged her.
Yet, at some point, all of this seemed to vanish. Thinking back carefully, it felt like everything had started to change from the moment that confession was rejected.
The thought left her with a hollow feeling inside, as if a piece had been carved out, aching faintly.
