Ten-Year Loyal Dog’s Road to Chasing Her Wife (GL) - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The story begins in September 2013.
In a place like Longting, there is nothing but summer and winter, so later when Qiao Wan recalled her first meeting with Qiao Mo, the sound of rise-and-fall cicada cries seemed to still be surging in her ears. In the midst of that noisy sound, that ugly-looking girl leaned down and asked her, “Can I sit next to you?”
She had a pair of light-colored pupils extremely similar to her own, as if one could look straight into her inner heart with a single glance. The weather was very hot, and she had run all the way up; crystal beads of sweat were faintly visible on her forehead.
Qiao Wan originally disliked anything that wasn’t clean, but for some reason, her heart softened that day. She said in a low voice, “You can.”
She even handed the extraordinarily ugly girl a tissue: “Wipe yourself.”
Perhaps it was out of pity, or perhaps it was because of those light, translucent eyes; in any case, Qiao Wan would never admit what she thought of this person at first sight. She did not have the ability to predict the future, and even less would she know that this person would accompany her through the long stretch of time ahead.
Three years, five years, ten years, or even a much longer “hereafter.”
From that quiet evening until the coffin lid was closed and this short life was finished, in the many years of life that followed, there were actually traces of this person everywhere, impossible to dispel.
She truly was like a shadow; no matter how one tried to drive her away, she was always behind her.
In the distant future, Qiao Wan also smiled and said to Qiao Mo: “If I had known back then that the person sitting down was a ‘big-tailed wolf’ (a wolf in sheep’s clothing), I would have driven you out no matter what.” However, when she said these words, she was leaning in Qiao Mo’s arms eating apples she had sliced, so there wasn’t a bit of threatening power in it.
The day they met was the opening day of Longting No. 1 High School, ending a three-month high school entrance exam vacation. It was the first evening self-study session of their high school career. The teacher had specifically instructed them to come early, as she was going to take attendance.
Qiao Mo was the second to last to arrive. The very last one was a plain girl who was chubby. Qiao Wan only remembered her plainness because such a girl truly had no redeeming qualities. By the time she arrived, the head teacher had already arrived and was standing on the podium preparing to speak. A loud “Reporting!” came from the doorway. Let alone the stern-faced head teacher, even Qiao Wan felt that person’s voice was a bit piercing.
But since it was only the first day, even the head teacher didn’t know her name yet, so Qiao Wan didn’t know what that late girl was called either.
She just remembered such a person.
She also remembered Qiao Mo.
One was fat, one was ugly.
Both were quite easy to remember.
No. 1 High School was the best high school in the Longting area; aside from the ones in the city, this high school was the best. Its area was also the largest among the dozens of high schools in Longting Town. Most of the grounds were submerged in lush trees and covered by green shade, which meant that in the summer, the sound of cicadas could even drown out the sound of the teacher’s lecture.
It also had a lot of history. By the year Qiao Wan graduated, it happened to be its 90th anniversary. Some rumored that this year, No. 1 High School specifically screened the students it recruited, striving to pick out the most excellent ones. Qiao Wan felt the depth of its history because of the dust-covered fans overhead.
They were already very old, turning with a creaking sound, working very hard, yet still producing almost no wind.
Qiao Wan usually didn’t sweat much, yet she was still soaking wet all over. Her white sleeveless short dress stuck to her body, which was very uncomfortable.
Therefore, she didn’t have a very good impression of this classroom, or even this school. She didn’t even have any interest in asking the name of the ugly Qiao Mo beside her. Anyway, she would be able to return to Shenzhen very soon.
Her mother had said that once she finished handling the marriage issues with her father over there, she would bring her back to Shenzhen to continue her studies.
Her parents were fighting over there because of a pregnant mistress.
Qiao Wan had heard it several times, so she had no heart for studying throughout her third year of junior high. Later, her mother thought this wouldn’t do, so she placed her in Longting Town. Qiao Wan’s uncle was here, so it was considered having someone to look after her.
As for Qiao Wan herself, having seen the prosperity of Shenzhen, she naturally looked down on the dilapidated Longting Town. There was nothing here. Even if her parents gave her a five-figure monthly allowance, she had nowhere to spend it.
In such a place, being small, news didn’t need long to spread through the streets and alleys. Qiao Wan hadn’t been there long before she became completely famous under the title of “Grade 10 School Beauty.” In the entire class, she was the only one who didn’t know people; there was no one who didn’t know her.
Even if they had never seen her in person, as long as they walked into Class 11, Grade 10, and saw a girl sitting there who was small, exquisite, with curly hair and light-colored eyes, several hundred times prettier than others, that was Qiao Wan, no mistake.
Some even joked, saying that if you walk into a classroom and see a girl who is simply like a crane standing among chickens, you should know you have walked into the Class 11 classroom.
Of course, it wasn’t that Qiao Wan truly didn’t know anyone.
At least she knew Yuan Tianci, the legendary “Grade 10 School Hunk” who was as famous as she was.
The Grade 10 School Beauty and School Hunk were gathered in one class; it was truly a spectacular sight.
Longting No. 1 High School divided classes according to grades. Originally, reaching Class 11 made it a very inconspicuous class, but because of the existence of Qiao Wan and Yuan Tianci, this class went viral on the school’s BBS and forums “Holy crap, Class 11 is going against the heavens! With Qiao Wan and Yuan Tianci there, I even want to go to Class 11 to study.”
“The visual level is indeed very high. To be honest, the girls in Class 11 are all quite good-looking.”
“You probably forgot there’s a particularly ugly girl in their class. Not exactly ugly, but she looks particularly disgusting, the kind with a face full of acne. Luckily I’m not the type who can’t keep my hands off, otherwise squeezing that face full of acne would definitely be very satisfying, hahaha.”
“The person above is causing discomfort, reported.”
“Report plus one.”
“A face full of acne reminds me of a former classmate who has the same surname, Qiao, as the School Beauty. It’s just that her grades were very good. I think even if she came to Longting No. 1 High School, she definitely wouldn’t end up in Class 11 after all, I, who was usually crushed by her, came to Class 9.”
“The person above must be from the Junior High division, hahaha. The fear of being dominated by MO.”
Everyone felt the same.
“Who is MO? Requesting decoding.”
Gradually, people started asking who exactly MO was.
“MO is the pinyin of her name. Her name is Qiao Mo. We used to call her Qiao Mei (Little Sister Qiao), but later she kept emphasizing to us that her name is the ‘Mo’ of Mo Xi. Plus, her grades were truly good, so gradually we called her MO.”
“Is it this one?”
The image boldly posted was of a class blackboard, covered with names written in various colored chalk. One area was circled in red with two names, left and right. The one on the left was the School Beauty Qiao Wan, and the one on the right was the School Tyrant Qiao Mo.
Left ‘Woman’, right ‘End’ the ‘Mo’ of Mo Xi.
The unfortunate thing was, the terrifying woman who had dominated them for three whole years in the Junior High division also happened to be called by this name. Qiao Mo, the ‘Mo’ of Mo Xi.
Besides Qiao Wan, this name actually seemed unusually like Qiao Wan’s sister.
‘Wan’ means gentle and beautiful.
And ‘Mo’, regardless of what its original meaning was, was now a character that Junior High students felt was a nightmare. Just seeing it made them think of those days being dominated by Qiao Mo, making them literally tremble.
“Impressive. The School Beauty, School Hunk, and School Tyrant are all in the same class. This class is probably going to cause trouble.”
Qiao Mo’s title of “School Tyrant” (Xiao Ba) was not a campus bully, but rather meant “School Overlord.” In competitions she entered, no one else ever took first prize that kind of overlord. The students who came up from the Junior High division were suppressed by her all year round and had no choice but to give her the title of School Tyrant; it wasn’t that Qiao Mo was actually violent.
“My condolences to the students of Class 11, hahaha. I already foresee their tragic future fate.”
It was one thing to not be as good-looking as their classmates, but even their studies would be left far behind.
“Qiao Mo is too unlucky, isn’t she? Going to Class 11 with those grades? Honestly, I think No. 1 High School’s eyes have gone blind. If even Qiao Mo can be assigned to Class 11, the top-tier classes must be strong enough to reach the heavens?”
“The experimental classes and top-tier classes are basically also students from the Junior High division. Even if there are talents from outside schools, how many can there be? I think if Qiao Mo didn’t enter the experimental class, it’s either she refused it herself, or the school used someone else to take her spot, for example, those business tycoons who contribute money and effort. With money and influence, they have the school squeeze their children in. What can the school do? Do as told. But the experimental and top-tier classes are set at fifty people per class; where can those displaced by rich kids go?”
Without saying it out loud, everyone knew where the displaced Qiao Mo went in Class 11. A mediocre class.
Her strength originally went far beyond this.
“To be honest, you all say you want to pursue Qiao Wan, but if Qiao Mo wasn’t this ugly, I would want to pursue Qiao Mo too. A female scholar strong as hell! If you caught her, holding her in your arms would be so prestigious, enjoying the feeling of having your IQ crushed 2333.”
“To the person above, don’t be happy too soon. Even if you can’t pursue her, after just one exam you’ll be able to feel the fear of being dominated by intelligence.”
Regardless, everything was already settled. Like a joke played by fate, Qiao Mo arrived at Class 11, went to Qiao Wan’s side, and became her day-and-night neighbor and desk mate.
And ten years later, they were still day-and-night neighbors.
