- Chapter 4 - Roses Under the Moonlight
Immediately after Cheng Ye drove away, a phone call patched through to Ye Wuming’s mobile via a private line.
“Cheng Ye is currently driving toward the Chen Group,” a woman’s voice said, muffled by the low brim of her black baseball cap. “Her fiancée whispered some sweet nothings in her ear, and now the little brat is throwing a tantrum. It looks like she’s heading there to cause trouble for CEO Chen.”
Upon hearing this, Ye Wuming set down the documents in her hand. The perpetual smile on her face shifted, gaining an obscure, dark undertone.
The person on the other end seemed to sense the change and chuckled lowly. “How about it, Boss Ye? Double my commission and I’ll handle this trouble for you once and for all.”
“This isn’t overseas.” Hearing this, Ye Wuming did something rare: she lowered her gaze and retracted her smile. “If you end up in that place where they provide ‘room, board, and labor reform,’ I will sincerely wish you a stable and happy life for the rest of your days.”
The woman clicked her tongue in dissatisfaction. “Tch.”
Don’t let Boss Ye’s youth fool you; the woman was incredibly old-fashioned.
She was different from people like them those who lived in the shadows and walked along the edge of the abyss. One of Boss Ye’s core creeds was: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Once she entered a territory, she played strictly by that territory’s rules.
To people of their kind, her moral standards were high enough to be infuriating.
Furthermore, she was a law-abiding citizen, which was simply irritating.
Truth be told, if it weren’t for the fact that Boss Ye paid far too much, the woman would never have left her comfort zone to come to this country and work for her.
Ah, as they would say, she was “washing her hands in a golden basin.”
“Cheng Ye is Jiyu’s cousin. No matter what she does, it is not my place to teach her a lesson. This is Jiyu’s family matter, do you understand?”
Ye Wuming’s relaxed tone didn’t seem to carry a hint of anger.
Hmph, a smiling tiger.
The woman concluded that if Boss Ye tried to pursue someone with this attitude, she would surely scare them away.
Thus, she emboldened herself to tease: “Then you’d better work harder, Boss Ye, and strive to become CEO Chen’s family member sooner. After all, I don’t want to keep spinning circles around a little brat.”
Cheng Ye was a brainless child, her mind failing to function as she was played like a fiddle by her fiancée, and spoiled by CEO Chen until she didn’t know the height of the heavens or the depth of the earth.
If such a person fell into the woman’s hands, she would have sent her to the slums to fight with wild dogs for food just to grind away that arrogance.
What a pity Boss Ye wouldn’t let her touch the girl.
Tch…
Meanwhile, a furious Cheng Ye had no idea that her every move was being watched.
Given Ye Wuming’s temperament, she wouldn’t strike at Cheng Ye without Chen Jiyu’s permission.
However, that didn’t mean she wouldn’t make sure Cheng Ye went on a fool’s errand.
Setting the time and grabbing a travel guide, Ye Wuming’s actions were just like her personality: nonsensical, yet swift and decisive.
“What? Traveling in H-City?” Hearing Ye Wuming’s invitation out of the blue, Chen Jiyu subconsciously checked the time.
She doubted whether she had gone too long without a good night’s sleep, to the point of experiencing hallucinations.
H-City had many famous tourist attractions; seeing them all would take a significant amount of time.
Given the current state of the Chen Group, where would she find the time to accompany Ye Wuming on a trip?
No, that wasn’t right…
Chen Jiyu raised a hand to press against her brow.
If it was accompanying the founder of Cupid on a trip, she would have to squeeze that time out even if she didn’t have it.
“Alright, President Ye. I will come to find you shortly.”
“Relax, we’re going to play, not to negotiate a contract. Calling each other ‘President Ye’ and ‘CEO Chen’ sounds so distant. As my dear partner, I’ll leave the difficult task of deciding how we should address each other to you, CEO Chen.”
That being said, if she weren’t afraid of scaring Chen Jiyu away, Ye Wuming would have called her “wifey” long ago.
Heaven knew how much she wanted to tuck the other woman into her pocket.
Ye Wuming’s words had a bit of a “taking advantage while acting innocent” feel to them, but her speech did indeed allow Chen Jiyu’s tense nerves to relax slightly.
“Oh, right. If that question is too difficult, I can solve half of it for you. For instance, you could call me Wuming.”
The other woman’s voice through the phone carried a slight, low-frequency magnetic quality. It was as if someone had brought a glass of sparkling water into the sweltering heat of summer lemon and mint colliding to burst with a season’s worth of coolness.
Chen Jiyu nodded subconsciously, only realizing after the gesture that the other person couldn’t see her.
An involuntary curve appeared at the corners of her lips; perhaps she was laughing at her own minor mistake, or perhaps she just simply wanted to smile.
Chen Jiyu propped her elbow on the desk, resting her cheek against her wrist in a relaxed and natural posture. “Although I am a few years older than you, President Ye, calling me ‘Sister’ always makes me feel old. Wuming, have some pity on an elderly person and just call me Jiyu.”
In reality, given Ye Wuming’s status and position, there were likely few in the industry who would dare to claim a personal connection and ask her to call them “Sister.”
Ye Wuming had provided her with a graceful exit, and she took it, resulting in mutual satisfaction.
She called her Wuming; she called her Jiyu. On the surface, the two had indeed become much closer.
A glimmer of light flickered in Ye Wuming’s downcast eyes on the other end of the line. Some people are greedy; even when they are a step closer to their goal, they still want to get even closer.
But there was no rush. She had plenty of time.
Slowly, slowly…
Ye Wuming said with a smile, “Alright then. Jiyu, please work hard to pack your things and come downstairs. Your exclusive food delivery driver has arrived at the station. Won’t you really come and have a bite of the late-night snacks from Fei’s Shop?”
Based on Chen Jiyu’s personality, she definitely hadn’t eaten dinner yet. She would simply knit her brows and forcibly ignore the discomfort of a stomach cramping from hunger. If she didn’t neglect her body so much, her stomach wouldn’t be as fragile as it was now.
Just like the other day when they ate Jiyu had only eaten a little before vomiting until the world spun.
For a moment, Chen Jiyu felt she hadn’t understood what the other woman was saying. She asked in disbelief, “You’re downstairs at my company?”
The Cupid building in H-City was not close to the Chen Group, and going to Fei’s Shop required a detour. The excuse of “just passing by while on a business trip” simply wouldn’t hold water.
And Ye Wuming was unexpectedly blunt.
She never hid her intentions, nor would she ever lie to her Light.
“I dare say you definitely! Absolutely! Did not take what I said the other day to heart. You have to cherish your own body.” Ye Wuming’s voice, which sounded like she was gritting her teeth in the first half, turned into one of helplessness in the second half likely from being past the point of anger.
This caused the usually composed and rational CEO Chen to feel a rare sense of guilt.
How should one put it… Hmm… It felt like being worried over and lectured by a child.
Hiss…
Listening to the other’s nagging the whole way, Chen Jiyu soon exited the building.
By the light of the streetlamps and the shroud of the dark night, that tall woman looked like a rose blooming in the shimmering moonlight.
With a black skirt and white accents like petals, her exquisite and intense features gathered all the beauty of the world, transforming into a drop of dew carrying the night and the coolness, perched at the center of the petals.
The white stamens quietly unfurled, and something called “emotion” sprouted in the dark of night.
Anyone who saw her at this moment would know: this reserved and noble rose was blooming for love.
Its blooming was grand and intense, blunt and confident.
Even Chen Jiyu, as a woman herself, couldn’t help but feel her heart skip a beat. Her gaze closely followed the swaying hem of that skirt.
Of course, if Cupid’s chief designer, Ann, were standing here right now, she would certainly lift her chin with pride and say: As expected of the dress and accessories I designed. Look at that wearing them on someone named Ye can mesmerize a whole crowd.
