Striving for Harmony After Transmigrating as an Alpha Female Supporting Character - Chapter 19
But the moment Jing Nianxun actually stepped into Ai Xiaoyu’s room and smelled the peach scent permeating the air, she felt a twinge of regret.
Even though the System had warned Ai Xiaoyu countless times to remember to use scent blockers, and Ai Xiaoyu had always promised to do so, her twenty-six years in her original world made her feel that the stuff was basically like perfume. It felt strange to wear, so she usually only gave herself a quick spray before heading out.
Besides, there wasn’t really anyone at home to worry about. Her parents were already a fully marked Alpha-Omega couple, so they weren’t particularly sensitive to the pheromones of minors. As for Jing Nianxun, she hadn’t even differentiated yet.
So, Ai Xiaoyu had confidently tossed the blocker into the cabinet and hopped onto the bed to play games.
Jing Nianxun’s complexion wasn’t great, but not wanting her secret to be discovered, she kept her distance from Ai Xiaoyu. She sat at the opposite end of the bed, wrapping herself tightly in the quilt.
“Are you cold?”
Ai Xiaoyu looked at her huddled under the covers and thought to herself that it wasn’t even winter yet. Could the female lead’s constitution be that weak?
She said firmly, “Nianxun, this isn’t good. You need to eat more to nourish your body. It’s not even winter and you’re already this afraid of the cold.”
Jing Nianxun simply gave a muffled “Mm” through furrowed brows.
After a while, Ai Xiaoyu leaned in closer, her face almost resting against Jing Nianxun’s shoulder, insisting on seeing the title of the book in her hands.
“What are you reading?”
Ai Xiaoyu flipped the book over, only to see five large gold-leafed characters on the thick cover: Criminal Psychology.
“…”
Why is she reading a book like that?!
Ai Xiaoyu felt a chill run down her spine. Was the female lead preparing for her future revenge?
Ai Xiaoyu immediately softened her voice. “It’s not good for a young girl to read books like this. You should be more positive and healthy! Come watch anime with me instead.”
Jing Nianxun, however, didn’t hear a word she was saying. The moment Ai Xiaoyu leaned in, her entire world went haywire. Every inch of her skin felt sensitive to the other girl’s breath and scent. That sweet peach fragrance felt impossible to escape.
How am I supposed to sleep tonight at this rate?
Jing Nianxun fell into thought for a moment, her gaze landing on the open cabinet which revealed several small bottles of scent blockers. She shifted her arm slightly and asked with feigned curiosity, “Xiao Yu, what’s that?”
Ai Xiaoyu had been feeling a bit listless since Jing Nianxun seemed more interested in her book than talking. Now that she finally had a conversation starter, she jumped off the bed and grabbed a bottle of scent blocker from the cabinet.
“This is a scent blocker. Since you haven’t differentiated yet, you might not know about it, but you’ll definitely need it in the future. Watch, you open it like this.”
Ai Xiaoyu twisted the cap, the nozzle popped up, and she gave herself a few sprays.
“There, just like that. You can spray it on your body or in the air, though it’s most effective on the gland.”
Ai Xiaoyu sprayed her own gland, and the scent in the room immediately dissipated by more than half.
Only then did Jing Nianxun let out a subtle sigh of relief. Just one night. After this, I’m never coming back to this room!
Ai Xiaoyu climbed back onto the bed and, thinking about the birthday party earlier, gave Jing Nianxun’s palm a gentle squeeze. “Don’t listen to what those people said. You have to believe that you’ll differentiate one day; it’s just a matter of time.”
Jing Nianxun felt Ai Xiaoyu’s fingers tracing circles in her palm. The sensation was tingly and itchy. For a split second, she almost wanted to blurt out that she was actually an Omega. But then Ai Xiaoyu spoke again.
“And about what happened that day… it was just an accident. Don’t take it to heart. I just lost control of myself. It won’t happen again.”
Suddenly, Jing Nianxun didn’t want to say anything at all.
If she spoke up, Ai Xiaoyu would know that she could smell her pheromones and was even reacting to them. That would be too embarrassing!
Pheromone attraction was the kind of thing that might make her heart skip a beat if it happened with someone else. But the other person was Ai Xiaoyu. Even though the Ai Xiaoyu in front of her now couldn’t be any better, there was always a wall between them—the past was something Jing Nianxun couldn’t just let go of.
She didn’t dare admit that she might be forming a connection with Ai Xiaoyu. Not physically, and not in any other way either.
As Ai Xiaoyu kept talking, her voice eventually trailed off. Jing Nianxun looked over and saw that she had already fallen asleep, her nose twitching occasionally as she scratched herself.
No matter who it was, everyone looked like a child when they slept.
Jing Nianxun sighed softly and tucked the covers around her. She pulled the pillow that was halfway off the bed back into place, turned off the lights, and closed her eyes.
The room was pitch black except for a bit of starlight filtering through the partially drawn curtains.
With the scent blocker in effect, the pheromones in the room were dampened. The peach scent had become faint and light, with just a hint of sweetness. It felt comfortable and warm to Jing Nianxun. Beside her was a warm body, and the blankets were soft and fuzzy.
It was like a wounded, stray little rabbit had finally returned to its own little burrow. Everything felt so safe.
Breathing in that faint peach scent, Jing Nianxun soon fell asleep. It was a night without dreams.
The next day was the weekend. Ai Xiaoyu didn’t set an alarm and slept until she woke up naturally. By then, the sun was high in the sky, shining brightly through the curtains.
The spot beside her was empty; even the pillow was gone.
Groggy with sleep, Ai Xiaoyu walked out of her room and heard a commotion coming from one of the guest rooms. It was a room that had been used for storage, and Jing Nianxun was currently busy tidying it up and wiping down the bed frame.
“Mom and Dad won’t be back until later. There’s no rush to clean. You can still sleep with me tonight,” Ai Xiaoyu said.
Jing Nianxun picked up a cardboard box from the floor and smiled at her. “It’s okay. I’d better get this organized quickly.”
Ai Xiaoyu thought for a moment. Perhaps Jing Nianxun still had some lingering distance from her and didn’t want to share a bed. That was only natural. After all, the original host had been such trash. If it were her, she wouldn’t want to see that person for the rest of her life either.
She had thought her efforts were paying off, but sensing Jing Nianxun’s avoidance made her feel a bit dejected.
Back in her own room, Ai Xiaoyu lazily tapped on the System’s window. “System, System, what’s my entropy at now?”
The System hadn’t appeared much lately, and Ai Xiaoyu had almost forgotten it existed.
The System reported: [Buying clothes with the female lead: +40. Hosting a birthday party where the female lead was very happy: +200. Sleeping together last night causing emotional fluctuations in the female lead: +100. After calculation, you are now at 1,000! Congratulations, Host, for breaking the 1,000 mark!]
The System was also happy for Ai Xiaoyu. It had guided many hosts, but this one was increasing entropy the fastest.
Hearing this, Ai Xiaoyu grinned, but then her smile froze awkwardly.
[What’s wrong?] the System asked, sensing the host’s mood dip.
“Nothing.”
Ai Xiaoyu didn’t even know what was wrong with herself. Clearly, the entropy was growing faster and faster, and the female lead’s attitude was changing. She could finally accept her. At this rate, there would be no “blackening” of the character.
Once the entropy was full, she could go home.
But why did she feel a wave of sadness in her heart?
