Strategy to Tame My Dimwitted Older Sister A - Chapter 47
Although Tang Lin said so, Bai Xia still felt that Chu Nanqiao might not actually think that way.
In other words, if Chu Nanqiao really had those kinds of feelings for her, why wouldn’t she just say it outright?
And if it were really as she imagined, if Chu Nanqiao had already felt that way about her in their past life then why had she still been so ruthless toward her?
Shouldn’t the more you like someone, the more you wish for their happiness?
Bai Xia couldn’t make sense of it no matter how much she thought about it.
Tang Lin noticed her gloomy expression and realized she hadn’t taken her words to heart. Sighing, she said, “What’s with that look? I’ve already spelled it out for you. If you still don’t get it, don’t go around telling people you’re my daughter in the future.”
Bai Xia’s thoughts were all over the place, so she barely registered what Tang Lin was saying and just casually replied, “Got it.”
After that, the two sat down to eat together.
Neither spoke during the meal. Tang Lin always gave Bai Xia space during moments like this some things had to be figured out on one’s own, and no amount of outside advice would help.
After dinner and a shower, Bai Xia lay in bed scrolling through her phone.
It was only a little past ten, still too early to sleep.
Outside, a group of elderly neighbors were chatting loudly, probably gossiping about someone again. Their voices were so animated it was as if they had a megaphone they might as well have been broadcasting it across the entire neighborhood.
The noise was too much for Bai Xia, so she closed the window. But it didn’t help, the thin glass did nothing to block the sound.
She gave up and put on her headphones instead.
She had originally planned to invite Xu Mo for a round of Honor of Kings, but just as she was about to start, she received a WeChat message from Chu Nanqiao.
[Xiaxia, are you home yet?]
Not only was she home, but she had already eaten dinner, showered, and was about to start a game.
It had been three or four hours, why was Chu Nanqiao suddenly messaging her now?
[Yeah, I’m home.]
[That’s good. You didn’t message me when you got back, so I was worried something might’ve happened to you on the way. Just wanted to check in.]
So she was worried about her.
A small flicker of joy sparked in Bai Xia’s heart.
[Sorry, Junior Chu Nanqiao! I was in a hurry when I got back and forgot to let you know. Next time, I’ll definitely tell you!]
[As long as you’re okay.]
After that, Chu Nanqiao didn’t send any more messages. Bai Xia waited for a while, but there was still nothing, so she reread their previous exchange several times.
But even after five or six rereads, there was still no sign of another message from Chu Nanqiao. For some reason, Bai Xia suddenly felt a strange emptiness in her chest.
She couldn’t quite describe it, it was like something had fallen through, leaving her emotions unsettled. It wasn’t exactly painful, but it was uncomfortable.
Was that it?
Just one sentence?
Nothing else?
She remembered how Chu Nanqiao usually bombarded her with messages, if she didn’t respond, the texts would keep coming. Why was today different?
Bai Xia glanced at the time again only 10:30.
Maybe the banquet wasn’t over yet?
That had to be it.
The usual Chu Nanqiao would never brush her off like this. Maybe she’d message again once she was free.
That’s what Bai Xia told herself.
Then she exited WeChat and went back to scrolling through other things.
After scrolling through short videos for about half an hour, Bai Xia switched back to the WeChat interface. Chu Nanqiao’s profile picture didn’t have a red notification dot, and clicking in revealed the same chat history as before, no new messages had been sent.
The situation was clear: Chu Nanqiao wasn’t continuing the conversation not because the banquet hadn’t ended.
Bai Xia buried her face in the pillow, her feet wiggling restlessly behind her like fish swimming in the sea, as if her feet and body were two separate entities.
But that wasn’t the point. The point was that Chu Nanqiao had really just sent two messages and then ignored her.
Could she be busy handling post-banquet matters?
But the Chu family had so many servants there was no need for Chu Nanqiao to lift a finger herself. Besides, with Xu Qing and Chu Muqing around, it was even less likely that Chu Nanqiao would have to personally deal with anything.
Or maybe Chu Nanqiao was just too tired from tonight’s banquet and had gone to rest after asking that question?
In just a few minutes, Bai Xia’s mind conjured countless possibilities to explain why Chu Nanqiao had only exchanged two messages with her before going silent.
But no matter how many reasons she came up with, Bai Xia couldn’t find a convincing one to deceive herself this was simply Chu Nanqiao’s attitude toward her now.
But that didn’t make sense.
If Chu Nanqiao had kissed her cheek because she had feelings for her, then she wouldn’t have just stopped after two messages.
Unless had Bai Xia misunderstood after all?!
Bai Xia abruptly sat up, frustratedly ruffling her hair. She scrolled back up to review their earlier conversation. This time, she was absolutely certain, she hadn’t said anything wrong!
But precisely because she hadn’t said anything wrong, Bai Xia grew even more frantic.
If she had misspoken and caused Chu Nanqiao to act this way, she could at least try to make amends and convince herself that Chu Nanqiao still felt the same as before. But if she hadn’t said anything wrong, then she didn’t even know where to start fixing things.
In the end, Bai Xia couldn’t hold back any longer and took the initiative to message Chu Nanqiao.
[Chu Nanqiao, junior, have you already gone to rest?]
Rest? There was no way Chu Nanqiao was resting. Like Bai Xia, her emotions were in turmoil. But unlike Bai Xia, Chu Nanqiao wasn’t agonizing over whether she liked her or not she was frustrated that after what amounted to an indirect confession, Bai Xia had shown no reaction at all.
She was an omega, and one with zero romantic experience at that. Her first kiss had been given to Bai Xia and she had been the one to initiate it. No matter how you looked at it, that was about as straightforward as it could get.
Yet Bai Xia hadn’t given her any response. Could she really still not understand what it meant?!
Chu Nanqiao angrily threw a pillow across the bed, but that wasn’t enough. She bit down on it in frustration, then resorted to punching it as an outlet for her emotions.
Idiot, idiot, idiot, such an idiot!
She even considered hurling her phone across the room, but just as she picked it up, she saw Bai Xia’s message though the content wasn’t what she wanted to see.
[Not yet. Did you need something, Xiaxia?]
[Well, I just wanted to ask if the banquet on your end has ended?]
[It’s over. Everyone’s gone.]
“Is that so? That’s good then, you can rest well now, junior. You must be exhausted from dealing with so many people today. I won’t disturb your rest any longer. See you on Monday.”
Chu Nanqiao felt like she was about to crack apart, wishing she could reach through the phone and drag Bai Xia over. She wanted to order someone to pry open Bai Xia’s skull and see what exactly was inside that brain, how could anyone be this dense!
But she still couldn’t bring herself to be angry at Bai Xia. With a heavy heart, she typed out a few words.
“Mm, goodnight.”
