Strategy to Tame My Dimwitted Older Sister A - Chapter 42
The two of them walked around the perimeter of the Chu family villa, not going too far, their steps smaller than usual, it was truly just a leisurely stroll.
But Bai Xia couldn’t think of anything to talk about. Being alone together still felt awkward no matter how she looked at it, especially now that she had somehow ended up holding Chu Nanqiao’s hand. The awkwardness was so intense she could practically dig a hole with her toes.
So after walking for a short while, Bai Xia let go of Chu Nanqiao’s hand, putting some distance between them.
Chu Nanqiao was very unhappy when she saw the released hand. She wanted to reach out and take Bai Xia’s hand again, but Bai Xia was as stiff as a block of wood not only refusing to let her hold on but also moving so far away it was like she had practically written “Alpha and Omega must not touch” on her face.
Now it looked like Chu Nanqiao was the one acting like a creep.
Seriously, how could she be this dense?!
The two of them continued walking, each lost in their own thoughts. After a while, Chu Nanqiao couldn’t take it anymore and blurted out, “You you said you were going for a walk with me, so why aren’t you saying anything?! Don’t you think this is super awkward?!”
This didn’t look like a walk at all. To anyone who didn’t know better, they’d think they were just two strangers who happened to be walking in the same direction mute strangers at that.
Bai Xia had long since mentally dug herself a three-bedroom apartment out of sheer embarrassment. But she really couldn’t think of anything to talk about. Or rather, she did want to talk, but her current relationship with Chu Nanqiao wasn’t that close yet at most, they were just “senior and junior.” If she said too much, Chu Nanqiao would definitely get suspicious.
Besides, another reason was that she didn’t actually know much about Chu Nanqiao. In her past life, the only thing she remembered was that Chu Nanqiao really loved milk tea. Whether they were out shopping or eating, Chu Nanqiao always had to order a cup.
But drinking too much milk tea wasn’t good, so later on, Bai Xia had restricted how much Chu Nanqiao could have. For the longest time, she had even wondered if there was opium in milk tea, how else could someone get so addicted to it?
But she drank it too, and she never got addicted.
Bai Xia couldn’t figure it out. That stuff was cloyingly sweet, and Chu Nanqiao always ordered it with full sugar, never seeming to get tired of it.
“So, Junior Chu Nanqiao, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”
Chu Nanqiao’s eyes instantly lit up. “Xiaxia, what do you want to ask?!”
Bai Xia said, “It’s just, why do you like milk tea so much?”
The question sounded a bit random, even a little forced given their current relationship.
But Chu Nanqiao didn’t mind. If Bai Xia asked, she would answer. “It’s not that I like it that much, it’s just Xiaxia, you probably don’t know what my family situation is like.”
Bai Xia really didn’t know much. In her past life, when Chu Nanqiao had taken her to the Chu family home, Xu Qing and Chu Muqing had been very warm toward her, always wanting to buy her expensive gifts. But Bai Xia had never felt comfortable accepting them after all, at the time, she and Chu Nanqiao had just been friends.
She had never once thought about using Chu Nanqiao’s connections to climb the social ladder. If she could rely on herself, why would she need to rely on others?
So every time she went to the Chu family home, she just ate a meal and, at most, stayed overnight with Chu Nanqiao. Beyond that, she hadn’t paid much attention to anything else.
“Is there some special reason?” Bai Xia asked.
Chu Nanqiao lowered her eyes and said, “Although, although I’m the eldest daughter of the Chu family, and I can get whatever I want, it’s precisely because of this status that Mom is usually very strict with me. There are many things Mom won’t let me eat, especially those sold outside.”
“I understand.”
“Xiaxia, you understand?”
Although Bai Xia wasn’t entirely certain, she more or less grasped the reason behind Xu Qing’s actions. “Your mom really does have your best interests at heart. Think about it, she’s an omega, and so are you. She definitely wants you to be different from other omegas in the future, so you won’t be bullied by alphas, right?”
Chu Nanqiao nodded. ” I know, but I’m still unhappy. I just want to eat all those delicious things. If people don’t live for food, then what’s the point of living?”
That made sense.
No wonder she loved drinking so much.
Bai Xia wanted to take her to buy a cup, but there weren’t any shops near the Chu family villa not even a small convenience store. This entire area was the Chu family’s property, and without their approval, no businesses dared to open here.
She remembered the nearest commercial street was several kilometers away, just a few minutes by car. But Bai Xia was worried that if Xu Qing or Chu Muqing needed to find Chu Nanqiao and discovered she had taken her elsewhere, they would surely want to kill her. So she dropped the idea.
“It’s a shame there aren’t any shops around here. Otherwise, I’d treat you to a drink,” Bai Xia said. “Also, there are so many delicious things in this world not just milk tea. Next time we have time, I’ll take you to try some.”
Chu Nanqiao hadn’t expected Bai Xia to say this, and she was overjoyed. But what she wanted wasn’t just for Bai Xia to treat her she could secretly buy those things herself if she wanted. What she truly desired was,
“Sweetheart, if you want something, go after it yourself.”
“If you like someone, fight for them. Fate doesn’t wait for anyone. If you miss it, it’s gone.”
“If you don’t act quickly, she could easily become someone else’s, and then you’ll only have regrets.”
Chu Nanqiao’s mind replayed Xu Qing’s words over and over, finding them incredibly wise.
“X-Xiaxia, can I ask you a question?”
Her heart began to pound.
Bai Xia looked puzzled. “Go ahead, ask whatever you want.”
Having always been the one pursued, this was Chu Nanqiao’s first time chasing someone, and she felt nervous. If she confessed and was rejected, she and Bai Xia might not even remain friends. But if she didn’t ask, what if some sly girl at school beat her to it and Bai Xia, soft-hearted, agreed? Then she’d really have no chance!
The thought made Chu Nanqiao extremely unhappy.
She asked, “S-so Xiaxia, do you have someone you like?”
Holding her breath, Chu Nanqiao finally got the question out. Her eyes remained fixed on Bai Xia, hoping to hear the answer she longed for.
Yet Bai Xia, as expected, didn’t meet her expectations.
“Of course I do! There is someone.”
Chu Nanqiao gripped the hem of her clothes tightly, her expression immediately falling. She asked unhappily, “W-what’s her name?”
Bai Xia pondered for a moment and said, “My mom! She’s the most important person in the world to me. Wait, wait not just my mom, but also that little chubby one at home. You have no idea how fat it’s gotten, always eating, eating, eating. Half the money I earn goes straight into its stomach, and it still has the nerve to give me attitude all day. It’s infuriating!”
She then muttered to herself, “If it keeps treating me like this, I swear I’ll send that chubby thing off to work at a cat café!”
Chu Nanqiao was momentarily stunned but then let out a sigh of relief. So it wasn’t what she had thought. She burst into laughter, “Hahaha, b-but, the kitty, it didn’t do anything wrong, right? Wh-why would you treat it like that?!”
“Well, you’re not wrong,” Bai Xia conceded, though she still felt indignant. “But I’m the one earning money to feed it, so it should at least let me pet it! Instead, it acts all high and mighty, shamelessly gobbling up the cat food, cans, and treats I buy. Don’t you think that’s just too much?”
Chu Nanqiao nodded in agreement.
As long as Bai Xia didn’t actually have someone she liked, any answer was fine with her.
The two chatted and laughed as they walked. After about a few dozen meters, Chu Nanqiao felt a sharp pain in her heels. She had worn high heels for the banquet today, and walking for too long had started to chafe her feet badly.
Bai Xia turned to look at her and noticed her furrowed brows as she kept glancing at her shoes. She immediately understood the problem.
Luckily, there seemed to be a park ahead where they could sit and rest for a while.
“Let’s go sit over there,” Bai Xia suggested.
Chu Nanqiao lifted her head, suppressing the pain as she murmured an “Mm.”
Bai Xia then helped her to a bench in the park.
The park was bustling with people taking evening strolls, and some elderly folks were out with their children. Chu Nanqiao, still dressed in her banquet attire and high heels, stood out conspicuously. To avoid drawing too much attention, Bai Xia steered them away from the crowded areas.
“Are your shoes rubbing?” Bai Xia asked, standing beside her.
Chu Nanqiao wanted to take off her shoes and massage her feet, but such an unrefined act felt too embarrassing for her. Instead, she just bent down and rubbed them lightly with her hands. “The shoes are a bit big.”
Bai Xia frowned. “Didn’t you have them custom-made to your size?”
Chu Nanqiao shook her head. ” I didn’t like the ones they prepared for me, so I didn’t wear them.”
Seeing her wince in discomfort, Bai Xia guessed blisters had already formed. For someone as delicate as Chu Nanqiao, an omega unused to such pain, it must have been unbearable.
The next moment, Chu Nanqiao watched in astonishment as Bai Xia pulled a pack of tissues from her pocket, took one out, folded it neatly, and then knelt right in front of her.
Chu Nanqiao froze.
For a second, she couldn’t believe what was happening.
Just as she was about to say something, Bai Xia spoke up, “You must have blisters. If you keep walking, they’ll burst and hurt even more. Let me pad them with this tissue, it’ll help ease the pain.”
After saying this, Bai Xia suddenly realized she’d forgotten to ask for permission. A little embarrassed, she added, “Ah, I should’ve asked first. Do you want to do it yourself, or should I help?”
Chu Nanqiao snapped out of her daze, still finding it hard to believe. She stared at Bai Xia intently, as if trying to confirm something.
Bai Xia felt goosebumps rise under her gaze, suddenly feeling uneasy. “W-why are you looking at me like that? I thought since you’re wearing a dress and it might be inconvenient, I’d help you out. If you’re not comfortable with it, I can just give you the tissue and you can do it yourself.”
Chu Nanqiao shook her head. “N-no, it’s fine! I-I’m wearing a skirt, so it’s inconvenient. Xiaxia, you do it.”
As she spoke, Chu Nanqiao stretched out her foot.
Under the park’s lamplight, Bai Xia saw Chu Nanqiao’s fair ankle and the red mark that had already been rubbed raw. In that instant, a peculiar thought flashed through Bai Xia’s mind against the backdrop of that pale skin, the red mark struck her as unexpectedly, inexplicably erotic.
