Strategy to Tame My Dimwitted Older Sister A - Chapter 40
Bai Xia sat in the car, lost in thought, propping her chin on her hand as she stared out the window in silence. The word “refusal” was practically written all over her face.
She had a pretty good idea why Xu Mo had dragged her along, it was obviously to use her as a human shield to avoid getting beaten up by her own fiancée. The motive couldn’t be more transparent.
But her life mattered too!!!
Just thinking about the last time Li Ai had asked to meet her still made her shiver in fear. It had been absolutely terrifying!
“Xia Xia.”
“Don’t call me that. Our friendship is over.”
Xu Mo really wanted to say, “I’m doing this to help your girlfriend, and you’re still mad at me?” But she had promised Chu Nanqiao not to tell Bai Xia, so she had no choice but to endure the scolding. “Xia Xia, talk to me, please? I did this all for your sake!”
“For my sake?” Bai Xia rolled her eyes so hard they nearly disappeared into her skull. “For my sake, my ass! I could hear your little schemes all the way from the Great Wall! Get lost, don’t talk to me. We’re done.”
Although Xu Mo often annoyed Bai Xia, she usually knew her limits and tried not to push things too far, always keeping Bai Xia’s feelings in mind. In her heart, Bai Xia would always come first.
This time was no exception.
So when she heard the unusual edge in Bai Xia’s voice, Xu Mo grew genuinely worried. Bai Xia must be really angry this time.
But she couldn’t just throw Chu Nanqiao under the bus, what kind of credibility would she have left then?
Being human was just too hard sometimes.
“Xia Xia, listen to me!”
“Not listening, not listening. Turtle chanting sutras.”
Xu Mo grabbed her hand and whined pitifully, “Xia Xia, I’m sorry! Just hear me out this once, okay? Just this once! And this time, it really wasn’t my fault. I did it all for you, and you still yelled at me!”
If it had been any other alpha in this situation, Bai Xia swore she would’ve beaten them until even their own mother wouldn’t recognize them!
“Oh, how thoughtful of you doing it all for me.”
“Of course!”
Only belatedly did Xu Mo realize Bai Xia was mocking her, and her smile slowly faded. “You haven’t even heard my explanation yet! How do you know I’m not telling the truth?”
Bai Xia turned to face her and played along. “Fine, then. Let’s hear how exactly you did this for my sake.”
Xu Mo released her hand and grinned. “Well that junior you had dinner with no, wait, the junior you saved, do you know who she is? She’s the eldest daughter of the Chu family, Chu Nanqiao. Tonight’s banquet is hosted by her family. Now, I could’ve skipped it, but she told me that since you saved her last time and she hadn’t properly thanked you yet, she was afraid you wouldn’t agree to come. So she secretly asked me to bring you along.”
“I figured you might not have time tonight, but you could probably squeeze in a little while. Didn’t you always say you wanted to find a good job after graduation to support your mom in her old age? But you refused to work at my family’s company, so…”
Bai Xia instantly understood. “So you’re trying to get me to cozy up to the Chu family?!”
“No, no!”
Xu Mo wasn’t sure how to phrase it properly. If she was too obvious, Bai Xia would figure it out immediately. But if she wasn’t clear enough, Bai Xia might not grasp her real intentions at all.
“No? Then what do you mean?” No matter how Bai Xia listened, she felt Xu Mo was implying exactly that.
In her past life, she had indeed considered this point.
Chu Nanqiao treated her extremely well. If she had taken advantage of that and used Chu Nanqiao as a stepping stone, she wouldn’t have had to worry about finding a job for the rest of her life.
But precisely because Chu Nanqiao treated her so well so well that she felt doing such a thing would make her less than human, a downright beast she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
She had grown up without a father, raised solely by her mother. She studied hard and worked tirelessly for scholarships, all to ease her mother’s burden. So, when she entered university, she didn’t have any grand ambitions. Her goal was simple: through her own efforts, secure a job with a decent salary, then work diligently, earn more money, and ensure her mother wouldn’t have to struggle anymore. That way, she could provide her mother with a good life. ♂
And in the end, she had succeeded.
Perhaps the heavens had looked kindly on her for being down-to-earth and free of ulterior motives. Whether in work or life, everything had gone smoothly for her except for one regret: Chu Nanqiao.
This was something Bai Xia still couldn’t understand to this day.
If Chu Nanqiao had always hated her, why had she treated her so well all along? And if she didn’t hate her, but simply didn’t like her, why had she ended up stabbing her to death?
Human actions always have reasons behind them.
Otherwise, such behavior would be contradictory and inexplicable.
Xu Mo was truly on the verge of a breakdown, thinking she might as well just tell Bai Xia the truth outright. But then she considered the relationship between the Chu and Li families, what if Chu Nanqiao and Li Ai were the same? If she betrayed their trust and Chu Nanqiao reported her to Li Ai afterward, wouldn’t she be doomed?
No, no.
She still couldn’t say it.
After a moment of thought, Xu Mo said, “I really don’t mean it like that. It’s just, I think this could be a good opportunity to engage with the outside world, don’t you? You’re always cooped up at school, with few chances to interact with society. Think about it, if you wait until after graduation to consider these things, won’t it be too late?”
This struck a chord with Bai Xia. If she wanted to break free from the life of her past, she couldn’t continue as before. She had to take proactive steps now.
“Don’t think I’ll forgive you just because you said that. But, you’re right.”
Xu Mo finally let out a sigh of relief and changed the subject. “See? And here you were scolding me talk about biting the hand that feeds you! By the way, Xiaxia, did you know Chu Nanqiao before? The way you looked at her the first time was off. Don’t tell me.”
Bai Xia immediately covered her mouth and threatened, “Watch your words. If you keep spouting nonsense, I’ll call Li Ai out the moment we arrive at the Chu residence. The Xu family must have been invited to the banquet too, right? I doubt you’d dare to run away then!”
At the mention of Li Ai, Xu Mo instantly wilted. She was genuinely terrified of that fierce omega scarier than a tigress! Every time they met, Li Ai’s glare made her feel like she was about to be torn apart. It was horrifying!
“No, no, no! I won’t say another word! You two don’t know each other, I’ll vouch for it!”
Only then did Bai Xia release her.
Actually, Xu Mo didn’t need to bring her along she knew the way to the Chu family’s house like the back of her hand. She could find it even with her eyes closed.
In her past life, aside from her own home, the place she had visited most often was the Chu family’s residence.
