Strategy to Tame My Dimwitted Older Sister A - Chapter 38
The night of the banquet.
Inside the Chu family villa.
Invited guests arrived one after another, holding their invitations. The once quiet living room quickly filled with people, bathed in the soft glow of crystal chandeliers. Everyone held a glass of wine, chatting and laughing.
But this was merely the surface.
Those who could attend a banquet hosted by a prominent family were either wealthy or influential people with power and money. Thus, attending such an event wasn’t just about showing face; most came with business intentions in mind.
When Xu Qing descended the stairs, everyone immediately stepped forward to toast her.
But as an omega, Xu Qing had little natural resistance to alcohol, and drinking too much could easily lead to trouble. Chu Muqing, well aware of this, made sure to accompany Xu Qing at every event, rarely leaving her side.
“Xiao Qing isn’t in the best health. Let me toast you all instead.”
Chu Muqing took the glass from Xu Qing’s hand and downed it in one go. “I’ve finished mine. Everyone, feel free to drink at your own pace.”
Had Chu Muqing not been present, Xu Qing would have had to drink regardless of her condition. But with Chu Muqing’s intervention and given that everyone in their circle knew just how obsessively devoted he was to his wife no one dared push Xu Qing to drink further unless they had a death wish or simply enjoyed courting disaster.
No one wanted to push their luck.
After finishing their own glasses, they quickly shifted the conversation.
Chu Muqing handed the glass back to Xu Qing, leaning in to whisper in her ear, “If you get drunk, don’t blame me for what happens tonight.”
Xu Qing’s face flushed instantly, and she pinched Chu Muqing’s waist lightly. “You old rogue!”
Chu Muqing didn’t dodge, letting her pinch him. Once she released him, he pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Don’t leave my sight. Can you do that?”
Xu Qing didn’t respond, silently agreeing.
Though a marked omega didn’t need to worry about other issues especially not on their own turf, Chu Muqing still couldn’t rest easy with Xu Qing alone. Whenever he wasn’t around, he made sure someone was always by her side.
This had been his habit even before Chu Nanqiao was born. Now that their daughter was all grown up, Chu Muqing still hadn’t shaken the routine.
People often said omegas couldn’t live without alphas, but Chu Muqing didn’t believe that. In truth, it was him who couldn’t live without Xu Qing.
“Where’s Qiaoqiao?” Chu Muqing suddenly remembered that he hadn’t seen his precious daughter since the banquet started. Worry crept into his voice.
Xu Qing only then recalled, glancing toward the garden. “She’s out there getting some air. Xiao Ai is with her. Don’t worry.”
Chu Muqing had only one treasured daughter, Chu Nanqiao, an omega at that. He practically wanted to keep his eyes on her twenty-four hours a day. Not seeing her made him uneasy. “Just the two of them? There are so many alphas at the banquet. What if someone tries to take advantage of her? No, have Uncle Chen and the others go keep an eye on them. If anything happens, they can step in. Or better yet, have Qiaoqiao come inside.”
Xu Qing quickly grabbed his arm. “I’ve already sent people over. Qiaoqiao isn’t in the best mood right now. Let her stay outside with Xiao Ai a little longer.”
Not in the best mood?
Chu Muqing instantly sensed that something was off. “Qiaoqiao hasn’t been herself since she came back yesterday. Did something happen at school? Was she bullied by an alpha?!”
“No.”
“No? Then what’s the matter?”
At the same time.
In the backyard of the Chu residence,
Chu Nanqiao sat on a swing, swaying listlessly with her head lowered, occasionally glancing at the phone screen in her hand.
The party had already started over ten minutes ago, yet Bai Xia still hadn’t arrived.
Though Xu Mo had promised she would definitely bring Bai Xia, in the end, it all depended on Bai Xia’s own willingness. If Bai Xia refused, no matter what Xu Mo did, it would all be in vain.
If not for the fear of scaring Bai Xia, Chu Nanqiao would have seriously considered kidnapping her straight from school.
“Ahhhh!”
Chu Nanqiao grabbed her hair in frustration and let out an angry roar, but then quietly lowered her hands. She could only keep convincing herself that Bai Xia must have something important to attend to.
What nonsense!
That idiot alpha, what important business could she possibly have? Even if she did, it was definitely on purpose!
“Xiao Ai, do you have an alpha you really like?”
Li Ai stood beside her and, upon hearing the question, answered without hesitation, “No.”
Chu Nanqiao looked up at her, unconvinced. “Not even once, your whole life? Not even a crush? I don’t believe it!”
Li Ai remained coolly indifferent. “No.”
She wasn’t like Chu Nanqiao. Chu Nanqiao had grown up pampered in a golden cradle, the only child doted on by her family. Cradled in their hands, afraid she might fall; held in their mouths, afraid she might melt. Everything was arranged for her in advance. If Chu Nanqiao wanted it, the entire Chu family could be hers right now.
But Li Ai was different.
She had older siblings above her and younger ones below. If she didn’t work twice as hard and instead spent her days lost in romance, she wouldn’t even have the means to fight for her future. She’d be left with no choice but to secure her position through a marriage alliance.
Li Ai didn’t want that. Relying on heaven or earth was never as reliable as relying on oneself.
“Alphas only slow down my money-making. As long as I have enough wealth, what kind of alpha couldn’t I have? If I felt like it, I could even keep a few young boys to pamper me, wouldn’t that be perfect?”
“Xiao Ai, so you want to be a sugar mommy!”
Li Ai paused in thought. If Chu Nanqiao hadn’t pointed it out, she wouldn’t have realized wasn’t this exactly the classic sugar mommy spoiling her young lover trope?
“Y-yeah! What about it?”
Chu Nanqiao grinned at her. “If that’s what you like, Xiao Ai, then in the future, I’ll have a villa built just for you. And then, I’ll help you pick out some young, fresh meat. That way, you can be happy every day!”
Every day???
Li Ai sighed, covering her face. “Qiaoqiao, I’d be thrilled if you built me a villa. I’d also be thrilled if you picked out some young meat for me. But you want me to live in debauchery day after day aren’t you afraid I’d exhaust myself to death?!”
Chu Nanqiao blinked at her innocently. “People always say there are only fields worn out by plowing, never oxen worn out by working!”
Well!
She really couldn’t argue with that.
Li Ai lightly tapped Chu Nanqiao’s head and scolded, “Who would’ve thought, Qiaoqiao? With such an innocent face, you know more about this stuff than I do. Spill it have you been reading a lot of colorful material in your free time?”
Chu Nanqiao turned her head away, adamantly denying it. “N-no! Isn’t this just common knowledge?”
If Li Ai were a grade-schooler, she might have actually believed that. “Common knowledge? How come I’ve never heard of it? Confess the truth right now!”
The two chased each other around the backyard, their playful banter filling the air with cheerful laughter.
But just then, an unexpected voice shattered the pleasant atmosphere.
Chu Nanqiao knew that voice all too well and it was the one she hated most.
