Strategy to Tame My Dimwitted Older Sister A - Chapter 3
The rain continued to pour, growing heavier by the minute. The relentless downpour battered against the umbrella, accompanied by a biting cold wind that made the canopy tremble precariously, as if it might collapse at any moment.
Bai Xia tried her best to angle the umbrella toward Chu Nanqiao. Seeing how thinly dressed she was and how she had been shivering when they stepped outside, Bai Xia had taken off her own jacket and draped it over her. After all, as an omega, Chu Nanqiao’s physical constitution couldn’t compare to that of an alpha. If she caught a cold, it would undoubtedly be miserable for her.
Yes, because Xu Mo had bailed, the task of escorting Chu Nanqiao home had once again fallen to Bai Xia.
She had already resolved not to have anything to do with Chu Nanqiao, but saying it was one thing acting on it was far more difficult. Perhaps out of consideration for her own conscience, she couldn’t bring herself to be so heartless toward Chu Nanqiao. Leaving her alone in the bar would only invite trouble. It was as if Bai Xia owed her a debt from a past life, and now, in this lifetime, she had to repay it all at once.
The spot where they could hail a taxi was still some distance away, and the rain was simply too heavy. Even with a sturdy 12-rib umbrella, they couldn’t avoid getting soaked. If this continued, both of them would end up drenched. After a moment’s hesitation, Bai Xia decided to leave Chu Nanqiao under a sheltered spot first while she went out alone to call a cab.
But the moment she tried to leave, Chu Nanqiao clutched her hand tightly, refusing to let go. “Y-you, you’re going to leave me here, all alone?”
Bai Xia couldn’t bear to look directly into Chu Nanqiao’s big, shimmering eyes. She could never find it in herself to refuse anything adorable just like how she could never say no when her chubby cat begged for treats. “No one’s abandoning you. Your home isn’t nearby, and this umbrella isn’t big enough to cover both of us in this downpour. Just stay here, and I’ll go call a car for you.”
Chu Nanqiao lowered her head, as if deep in thought, but her grip remained firm. After a long pause, she finally looked up again. “G-getting wet is okay! I want to go with you, c-can I?”
“If you get wet, you’ll catch a cold. And if you catch a cold, you’ll have to take a lot of medicine, bitter medicine.”
“B-but won’t you get sick too?”
“Of course not. I’m an alpha, my body’s tough!”
“Oh! I see!”
Chu Nanqiao seemed deflated, her shoulders slumping as she lowered her head again, muttering something under her breath. “If only I were an alpha too.”
The rain was too loud for Bai Xia to hear her clearly, but seeing Chu Nanqiao like this, she shouldn’t have felt anything at all. Yet, for some reason, an uncomfortable sensation settled in her chest.
An even more terrifying thought surfaced in her mind, she actually wanted to cheer Chu Nanqiao up!
No, no, no.
That was a dangerous notion.
For one, they were still practically strangers. Trying to comfort her would be too abrupt, and if she overdid it, she might come across as a creep. More importantly, that stab from their past life had been real, she couldn’t forget it so quickly, nor could she pretend it had never happened.
“I can’t hear what you’re saying. Can you speak up?”
Chu Nanqiao looked up at her without speaking. Under the dim streetlight, Bai Xia could clearly see her glistening, tear-filled eyes.
What the hell? What’s going on here?
Chu Nanqiao was actually crying!
But Bai Xia hadn’t done anything, why was she suddenly on the verge of tears?
No, no, now wasn’t the time to dwell on that. The real issue was Chu Nanqiao was crying in front of her!
Should she actually try to comfort her?
No, no.
She couldn’t. Right now, she and Chu Nanqiao didn’t even know each other. An alpha comforting an omega would undoubtedly imply that the alpha was interested in the omega. Based on Chu Nanqiao’s personality in her past life, there was no way she’d ever like Bai Xia at most, she’d see her as a good friend. If Chu Nanqiao misunderstood her intentions, things could get messy.
Bai Xia wrestled with the dilemma internally before finally deciding against comforting her.
“Hey, what’s wrong? If you have something to say, say it properly, don’t cry!”
Chu Nanqiao hadn’t actually intended to cry, but Bai Xia’s words seemed to break the dam. Tears spilled like a string of pearls, followed by a torrent of choked sobs and incoherent words.
But Chu Nanqiao already had a stutter, making her speech hard to follow. Now, with her crying, it was downright unbearable.
Bai Xia couldn’t take it anymore and simply covered Chu Nanqiao’s mouth with her hand. “Shh, shh, don’t cry. What if someone thinks I bullied you? Speak properly, stop shedding those little pearls.”
If she hadn’t said anything, it might have been fine. But the moment those words left her mouth, Chu Nanqiao only grew more agitated. Without hesitation, she opened her mouth and bit down hard.
Bai Xia hadn’t expected this and was completely unprepared. The pain made her yelp, but with so many passersby around, she couldn’t risk being mistaken for a lunatic. Gritting her teeth, she pulled her hand free from the tiger’s jaws.
Chu Nanqiao didn’t hold back when she bit, in just that brief moment, a clear row of teeth marks was already imprinted on Bai Xia’s palm, glaringly obvious.
“Speak properly, why’d you have to bite me?! Back in the bar, I saved you from a bunch of alphas, and this is how you treat your savior? You little ingrate!”
Perhaps realizing she’d gone too far, Chu Nanqiao stayed silent, staring guiltily at the bite mark on Bai Xia’s hand, looking utterly pitiful.
What could Bai Xia even say? She could only curse her own bad luck. “I haven’t even said anything, and you’re already acting like the victim!”
Then, in a tiny voice, Chu Nanqiao mumbled, “S-s-sorry, I-I didn’t mean to.”
She left a whole row of teeth marks, how was that not on purpose?!
If it had been anyone else, Bai Xia would’ve slapped them without hesitation. But alas, this was Chu Nanqiao. There was no way she could actually hit her.
“Fine, you don’t seem like you did it on purpose. This time, I’ll be the bigger person and let it slide. But if there’s a next time, I’ll—” Bai Xia thought viciously to herself that if Chu Nanqiao dared pull this again, even if she cried, she’d make sure Chu Nanqiao regretted it!
But Chu Nanqiao preempted her. “I-if there’s a next time w-will you hit me?”
“Huh?”
“Y-you must be thinking that.”
“How would you know what I’m thinking? Are you the worm in my stomach?” And so sure of it, too.
“I can tell.”
Bai Xia reached out and lightly tapped her on the head, then froze.
In her past life, she had often done the same to Chu Nanqiao, it had become a habit. She thought that after being reborn, these habits would fade, but they hadn’t.
Habits truly were terrifying things.
