Strategy to Tame My Dimwitted Older Sister A - Chapter 18
The two walked side by side for a while. As they neared the dormitory, Chu Nanqiao pulled Bai Xia to a stop, preventing her from going any further, as if she had something to say her eyes filled with unspoken words.
“What’s wrong?”
Bai Xia had to admit, she really couldn’t stand seeing Chu Nanqiao like this. That protective, affectionate feeling surged in her heart instantly. She ruffled her own hair and asked, “Wh-what’s the matter with you?”
Chu Nanqiao grabbed her arm, her tone almost angry as she stammered, “You last time you still didn’t give me your WeChat!”
Bai Xia was caught off guard. She had thought Chu Nanqiao had long forgotten about this. She had even been relieved, thinking she wouldn’t have to worry about her life anymore as long as they didn’t stay in frequent contact, it wouldn’t be so bad to just be ordinary friends in the future. She never expected Chu Nanqiao had been holding onto this the whole time.
Miscalculation!
“WeChat, huh!”
“You just don’t want to give it to me!”
“That’s not true, of course not.”
“You do!”
Chu Nanqiao tugged Bai Xia’s arm downward, forcing her to meet her eyes. “If not, then look at me and say it!”
Bai Xia had indeed been reluctant to give it, and Chu Nanqiao’s accusation only made her feel even more guilty. “Fine, I’ll look!”
The two stared at each other, wide-eyed, for a while. Just as passersby might have thought they were both crazy, Chu Nanqiao finally couldn’t take it anymore. Unable to find even the slightest crack in Bai Xia’s facade, she was the first to lower her head.
Bai Xia had won this battle.
There was no helping it, a novice just couldn’t compare to a seasoned veteran. When it came to who had the thicker skin, the veteran always played it to perfection.
As the victor, Bai Xia was naturally pleased, but she couldn’t show it too obviously in front of Chu Nanqiao. She suppressed her triumphant smile and feigned consolation, saying, “See? I told you I wasn’t lying. You’re just embarrassing yourself here.”
Deep down, Chu Nanqiao absolutely refused to believe Bai Xia hadn’t lied. But her pride wouldn’t allow her to keep staring like that in public, if word got out, she’d lose all dignity as the young mistress of her family.
Still, losing like this left her fuming. She knew full well Bai Xia was deliberately withholding her WeChat, yet she had no way to force it out of her. Pretending she wasn’t angry was impossible.
Seeing Chu Nanqiao with her head down again, her cheeks puffed up in frustration, Bai Xia wondered if she had pushed the girl into full-blown sulking. She tried to console her, “Don’t take it so seriously. Some things just aren’t worth the fuss. If you think it’s true, then it is. If you don’t, then it isn’t.”
Chu Nanqiao jerked her head up defiantly. “B-but you are! Y-you just… won’t admit it!”
Bai Xia was still guilty, but her thick skin carried her through. Even if she were exposed on the spot, she’d still maintain her “I didn’t, I wouldn’t, don’t accuse me” act. She sighed dramatically, playing the victim. “Junior, I understand your competitive spirit, but sometimes things just are what they are. You’ve got to learn to let go, don’t you think?”
Her words only made Chu Nanqiao even angrier. No one had ever dared to mess with her like this since she was a child, and now it had happened twice in a row. This alpha was simply too audacious!
As Chu Nanqiao stewed in her thoughts, her grip unconsciously tightened. Bai Xia could clearly feel her arm being squeezed little by little, but the pressure wasn’t enough to cause any real discomfort, so she let Chu Nanqiao keep holding on.
After a long while, Chu Nanqiao finally couldn’t hold on any longer her palms were sore yet the person in question remained completely unaffected. Fuming, she had no choice but to let go.
“Not holding on anymore?”
“…………”
“Look at you, getting so worked up over something so trivial. Calm down. A girl shouldn’t lose her temper so easily anger ages you quickly.”
“Th-that’s all b-because of you!”
Because of her?
Bai Xia felt utterly wronged. If it were anyone else, she wouldn’t have waited until now, she would’ve handed over her contact details the first time they met. But who could blame her for being wary of someone who had killed her in her past life?
Of course, she was the only one who had been reborn. This version of Chu Nanqiao was brand new, so it was understandable that she couldn’t comprehend Bai Xia’s behavior.
“Alright, alright, my fault, my fault. Reel in your temper there are so many people around. If they misunderstand and think I’m bullying you, I won’t be able to clear my name even if I jumped into the Yellow River.”
Chu Nanqiao seemed to think of something, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. “Th-then, c-can you g-give me your WeChat now?”
“Ah!”
“You see! Y-you just d-don’t want to g-give it to me!”
“That’s not true!”
“I-I heard you u-used to g-give your WeChat to a-anyone! Why are you m-making such a f-fuss with me?”
Bai Xia’s eyes darted around guiltily. In her past life, she hadn’t realized Chu Nanqiao’s mind worked so quickly she even knew to verify the facts with others.
Wait.
Verify with others?
Bai Xia released her hand, planting her own on her hips as she turned the tables. “You’ve only been at this school for half a month. Where did you hear that I just hand out my WeChat to anyone? Did you secretly ask around about me?”
Now it was Chu Nanqiao’s turn to feel guilty. This kind of thing wasn’t exactly honorable, it was downright stalkerish. If the person involved found out, she’d probably be labeled a creep. Chu Nanqiao had planned to take this secret to the grave, but in the heat of the moment, she’d slipped up.
Thinking fast, Chu Nanqiao immediately denied it. “I-I d-didn’t!”
Bai Xia leaned in closer. “Didn’t? Then why did you hesitate just now? You definitely did. Even my roommate might not know about this. There’s no way a freshman like you could know unless you went around asking behind my back.”
Chu Nanqiao’s downfall was her stutter she couldn’t immediately rebut or argue. By the time she managed to form a sentence, the other person had already finished speaking. She was both furious and frustrated. Furious at herself for being a stutterer, always at a disadvantage no matter what she said. Frustrated because Bai Xia clearly just didn’t want to give her the WeChat details but kept making excuses, turning the tables so that now she was the one in the wrong.
Bai Xia noticed she wasn’t speaking, her face alternating between red and pale. She must be internally fuming from the counterattack, probably wishing she could kill Bai Xia right now if Bai Xia wasn’t mistaken.
Wait, wasn’t this just asking for trouble?!
What good would it do to provoke Chu Nanqiao’s anger? If she truly flew into a humiliated rage, wouldn’t the tragedy from their past life just repeat itself?
That absolutely couldn’t happen!
