- Chapter 2 - I'm Here, I've Always Been Here
A piercing roar tore through the sky on a pitch-black night.
Xu Xiang abruptly opened her eyes and sat straight up in bed. Staring at the all-too-familiar surroundings, she wondered had she been reborn?
Outside the window, a thunderstorm raged.
The chaotic noises beyond her room hinted at the unusual events unfolding tonight at Yulong Bay.
She found her phone beside her and checked the date today was the day Li Zhenyan’s illness would flare up.
Originally, he could have passed through it safely, but this morning, after drinking a bowl of porridge she had brought him,
his condition spiraled out of control, plunging him into the violent state he was in now.
And that bowl of porridge had been specially arranged by her dear sister, Xu Nuo.
Knowing he would lose control at night, Li Zhenyan had instructed the servants before his episode to lock Xu Xiang’s door securely, ensuring he couldn’t get near her.
This man, despite being harmed so grievously by her, was still thinking of how to avoid hurting her.
Xu Xiang hurriedly got out of bed and began pounding forcefully on her bedroom door, she needed to calm Li Zhenyan.
In her previous life, it was because of tonight’s episode that his nerves began to deteriorate irreversibly.
“Open the door! Open the door!” No matter how desperately Xu Xiang shouted, the people outside acted as if they heard nothing.
After all, who would care about the person responsible for their young master’s suffering?
He was in the room next door.
Jiang Yan and Wen Ziqing waited anxiously outside, knowing they couldn’t rush in recklessly.
Doing so would only provoke the Second Master, making a dire situation even worse.
Jiang Yan, already restless and impatient, grew even more agitated by Xu Xiang’s frantic cries.
He drew the pistol from his waist and strode quickly to her door.
With one fierce kick, he forced it open and aimed the gun squarely at Xu Xiang’s forehead.
Wen Ziqing immediately sensed the danger and rushed forward to grab Jiang Yan’s wrist. “Have you lost your mind? Do you think killing her will cure the Second Master’s illness?”
“Even if it doesn’t, I, Jiang Yan, will have eliminated a future threat!”
As he spoke, Jiang Yan prepared to pull the trigger. Xu Xiang, however, remained calm and made no move to resist. Instead, she grasped the barrel of the gun and pressed it firmly against her own forehead.
“Killing me now won’t help anything. Why not let me go and soothe Ayan? Once it’s done, you can kill me then, it won’t be too late.”
Stunned by her words, Jiang Yan froze. Seizing the moment, Wen Ziqing snatched the pistol from his hand.
“Miss Xu’s suggestion is a reasonable approach.”
Jiang Yan didn’t fully understand, but if Dr. Wen agreed, he was willing to try anything that might save the Second Master.
Jiang Yan led Xu Xiang to the door of Li Zhenyan’s room. The terrifying roars from within signaled just how frenzied the person inside had become.
“If you dare try any tricks, I’ll be the first to shoot you dead!”
“I will succeed. If I fail, you won’t need to take my life, I will end it myself.”
With a click, the door unlocked. Xu Xiang stepped slowly into the dimly lit room, and behind her, Jiang Yan locked the door securely.
By the moonlight streaming through the window, she could see that every item in the room had been shattered, the floor littered with shards of broken glass.
In her haste to leave her room, Xu Xiang hadn’t put on shoes.
Barefoot, she walked across the glass fragments, her feet bleeding profusely, but nothing could halt her advance.
From a dark corner, low, guttural growls caught Xu Xiang’s attention.
She stepped forward slowly, never expecting the other person to charge at her abruptly, grabbing her by the neck and pinning her against the wall.
The suffocating pain followed immediately. The golden pupils before her seemed exceptionally dazzling at that moment, yet she felt no fear at all.
She knew that every time Li Zhenyan had an episode, his pupils would turn golden.
And the source of this illness was his mother, it had been with him since birth.
Xu Xiang’s hands touched Li Zhenyan’s, which were still gripping her neck. “Cough, cough! Ayan, Ayan, it’s me, Xu Xiang. Ayan, snap out of it!”
Hearing the name “Xu Xiang,” Li Zhenyan’s gaze softened, and his grip loosened.
Xu Xiang slid to the floor, coughing violently. Struggling up from the ground in pain, she embraced the out-of-control Li Zhenyan. “Ayan, don’t be afraid. I’m here. I’ll always be here.”
The familiar scent drifted into Li Zhenyan’s nostrils, and his mind uncontrollably replayed the events of that morning. The emotions that had just been soothed surged back instantly.
Xu Xiang held onto Li Zhenyan tightly, refusing to let go, until a sharp pain shot through her neck and a wet sensation emerged.
Li Zhenyan had bitten down hard on Xu Xiang’s neck, greedily drinking her blood.
Yes, this illness of his during an episode, the blood of his most beloved person was the cure.
Yet, over all these years, Li Zhenyan had never taken a single drop of Xu Xiang’s blood.
No one knew about this; it was only after Xu Xiang stumbled upon Li Zhenyan’s family records that she found out.
She had no idea how much time had passed before Li Zhenyan’s rage finally subsided. He collapsed heavily to the ground, taking Xu Xiang with him.
Xu Xiang lay motionless in his embrace, afraid of disturbing him again. She decided to let him be.
After all the turmoil, she felt utterly exhausted and, holding Li Zhenyan, fell into a deep sleep.
Early the next morning.
Li Zhenyan slowly opened his jet-black eyes, feeling the soft touch beneath his hands and the even breathing of the person beside him.
He was so enamored with this moment that he would willingly remain like this forever.
Raising his hand to caress Xu Xiang’s cheek, he suddenly noticed the gruesome, blood-crusted wound on her neck.
He sprang up in a panic, lifting the woman from the floor, and sensed something unusual about her back.
Laying her on the bed, he saw that her once smooth back was now marred by shards of glass, some deeply embedded in her skin.
“Wen Ziqing!!”
Jiang Yan and Wen Ziqing, who had been anxiously waiting outside all night, too afraid to barge in, finally heard the Second Master’s call.
They rushed into the room and, seeing that their master was unharmed, breathed a sigh of relief.
“Xiangxiang is injured! Are you two waiting to die?!”
Only then did they snap to attention. Wen Ziqing quickly grabbed the medical kit that had been prepared in advance, originally intended for the Second Master, never expecting it would be used on Xu Xiang.
Li Zhenyan carefully lifted Xu Xiang, his heart aching as he looked at her injured back. Just as he was about to pull down her shoulder strap, he froze. “Get a woman to do it.”
Wen Ziqing and Jiang Yan had no choice but to step back, allowing Wen Ziqing’s assistant, Li Yunyun, to take over.
Li Yunyun was Wen Ziqing’s star pupil. Though she had seen all kinds of injuries, she was still horrified by the shocking state of Xu Xiang’s back.
She picked out the glass fragments embedded in Xu Xiang’s flesh one by one. Even if Xu Xiang had been in a deep sleep, the pain would have jolted her awake by now.
“It hurts1”
Clutching Li Zhenyan’s arm in agony, she couldn’t stop her tears from falling. The pain radiated from her back throughout her entire body. Li Zhenyan’s eyes were red and bloodshot as he watched the scene before him, when had his little girl ever endured such pain?
“Fool! Xu Xiang, why did you come in? Hold it in for me!”
Hearing Li Zhenyan’s harsh tone, Xu Xiang, nestled in his arms, felt a wave of grievance wash over her. She was already in this state, and he was still scolding her. Instantly, she cried even louder.
“Wah! Li Zhenyan, you heartless man! I’m already like this, and you’re still yelling at me. Wah!”
