- Chapter 4 - Day 4 Running Away with the Ball
Whether it was because his worldview had been overturned in such a short time and he hadn’t slept well, or because Pei Nan had become “delicate” after turning into a rabbit, the moment he opened his eyes, his entire body felt sore and aching. It took him a good ten minutes to recover his strength.
Outside, the sky was just beginning to brighten. Pei Nan sat up with a grimace, tugged his bag out from under his backside, and pulled out his phone. It was only a little past four in the morning.
His fingers habitually swiped across the screen. Clicking into WeChat, he saw a row of red notification dots. The most messages came from his roommate, who was still asking at 2:00 AM if he was coming back to the dorm. One look at the time and Pei Nan knew the guy must have been gaming hard again; he probably hadn’t even gone to sleep yet.
Just as he was thinking this, another message popped up: “Hey man, where are you? I’ve gotta crash. Bring back some food when you come back in the morning.” This was followed by a blowing-kiss emoji.
Any trace of guilt Pei Nan felt vanished instantly.
He replied to a few important messages. His heavy head made his vision feel a bit blurry; he reached up and felt his forehead with a dazed hand, belatedly realizing his body temperature was a bit high.
“Host, your current symptoms are the aftereffects of the transformation. You don’t need medicine; just supplement your energy and get some sleep, and you’ll be fine.”
419 jumped out at the right moment. Looking at its host leaning against the window, its mechanical heart beat a little slower.
The sun had just jumped over the horizon, its light quickly chasing away the darkness and occupying the space in the blink of an eye.
The young man lowered his head, looking at the dehydrated plant on the windowsill. His handsome features were outlined by a golden rim of light he looked soft and fluffy, yet he kept people at a thousand-mile distance.
This kind of quiet posture rarely appeared on Pei Nan; it was as if he were truly sad.
419 was startled by its own thought. It was just about to comfort Pei Nan when it was locked in by his gaze.
“Don’t worry, I’ll do this damn task,” Pei Nan said with a scowling face, shattering the dreamlike morning and bringing 419 back to the mortal world.
After saying that to 419, Pei Nan stopped talking. He pulled a pack of biscuits out of his backpack, tore open the packaging, and began crunching on them. There wasn’t much water left in his kettle, so he took small sips to moisten his throat.
Once the noise downstairs grew louder, Pei Nan packed his things to leave. He swept the paper scraps in the corner into the trash can but felt conflicted when he looked at the award banner he had bitten.
Four or five of the neat tassels had been pulled quite long; there was no way to fix them. Pei Nan frowned and took a photo, thinking he would make an identical one and find an opportunity to replace it.
Finally, he glanced around to make sure nothing was left behind. Just as he was about to leave, he turned back, poured all the water from his kettle into the small potted plant, and muttered a couple of words that no one heard before walking away.
Today, all his classes were in the afternoon. He figured he’d drink plenty of hot water and sleep for a while; it wouldn’t interfere with his afternoon lectures. Passing by the cafeteria, he picked up breakfast for his roommate, though he estimated by the time the guy actually ate it, it would be noon.
Finally lying in his own bed, Pei Nan found he couldn’t sleep.
His mind was filled with that story he couldn’t understand.
Logically, he was different from the protagonist of the story; he would never walk the same path. As for the choices of others, what did they have to do with him? He didn’t really feel any sense of identification with it just as he couldn’t imagine two men being together.
However, that didn’t stop him from loathing those other scumbags.
Even though he had agreed to do the task, he couldn’t adjust his mindset immediately.
Thinking about all these messy things, he shouldn’t have been able to sleep well, but he was too tired. Once he fell asleep, he ended up waking up late.
In the pitch-black dormitory, he was the only one there.
When the phone rang, he thought it was a ghost.
“Hello, Bin-zi.”
Roommate Chen Bin’s voice, suppressed with excitement, was still very infectious through the receiver.
“Pei Nan! Hurry up and get ready. I just found out about a mixer with girls from the neighboring school. Word is the quality is very high~ You’re so handsome, your peach blossoms might bloom tonight! Don’t say your brother doesn’t look out for you. Oh, and I helped you sign in for the afternoon class.”
“Thanks, Bin-zi, but I won’t go to the mixer. I have an elective class tonight.”
“No way, no way! You’re not coming even when there are girls? Once they heard you might be there, even the Department Beauty decided to come.”
As Chen Bin spoke, he marveled in his heart. Since the start of the term, just one military training session had made Pei Nan stand out. His popularity was catching up to the School Grass the most handsome guy in school. Once they saw Pei Nan in a swimming competition, they’d probably go crazy. It was truly infuriating to compare yourself to others.
“I already told them you were coming. Just come and back your brother up, please! I beg you, Father Nan! If I get off the ‘single’ list tonight, I’ll acknowledge you as my father on the spot. I mean it!”
Hearing such a solemn promise, Pei Nan was moved. A roommate who doesn’t want to be a “father” isn’t a good roommate. Listening to Chen Bin’s flowery flattery, he got out of bed. “Send me the location.”
“You got it! Hurry up!”
Chen Bin hung up and walked back to the crowd, flashing a toothy grin at several pretty girls. “Our Brother Nan will be here in a bit. Everyone, let’s head inside and wait.”
“Chen Bin, you’re amazing!”
“Is Pei Nan really that handsome?”
“Yeah, tell us more first.”
The soft voices and warm, sweet scents suddenly enveloped Chen Bin, making the 1.8-meter-tall guy turn red in the face and scratch his head in embarrassment. “Yes, yes, he’s definitely not a ‘photo-fraud.'”
When Pei Nan arrived, Chen Bin was performing with grand gestures. His voice carried across half the courtyard, sounding vivid amidst the smoky, fiery atmosphere of the BBQ.
The waiters assisting the customers were even drawn in, stretching their necks to watch while keeping an eye on the grills.
“Just in the nick of time! A basketball almost hit my head. Pei Nan was standing right next to me; he just reached out and slammed the ball back into the court. That posture was so cool it triggered a wave of screams. In the end, the guy just went off to train as if nothing happened.”
Several girls nearby had stars in their eyes, following up with gasps and sighs. Their skill at playing along was as professional as a comedy duo.
“Is there more?”
“Tell us some more.”
“Hey? The main man is here!”
As soon as the words “Pei Nan is here” came out, everyone turned their heads in unison. Even the colorful decorative lights weren’t as bright as the eyes of this crowd.
“Hi everyone, I’m Pei Nan. I had some things to do, so I’m a bit late.” Pei Nan’s footsteps paused for a second before returning to normal.
His legs were long, so it only took him a few steps to reach the table. The barbecue had just started; there were a few skewers in front of everyone, but they were barely touched. It was obvious that food wasn’t what was on their minds.
This was different from Pei Nan’s purpose. He came here to eat and to “adopt a son.”
Once Pei Nan sat down, it was as if a silent film had regained its color and became vivid again. Everyone crowded around him, talking animatedly.
The guys who had been secretly curling their lips while listening to Chen Bin’s extravagant boasting earlier were now either rubbing their noses or their eyebrows, not daring to meet Pei Nan’s eyes. It was simply because Pei Nan was too handsome.
His handsomeness didn’t have a trace of “pretty boy” makeup; yet his skin was so good it looked translucent. In the eyes of a group of boys who had just finished their high school transformation, Pei Nan was extremely competitive: he made sportswear look stylish, his back was relaxed and straight, and his long-legged stride was graceful. Under the lights, his face now fully revealed was a massive bonus.
“I’m late, I’ll penalize myself with a drink.” Pei Nan took the glass Chen Bin handed him and knocked it back cleanly.
“Hey, drink a little less. You probably have training tomorrow, right?” The prettiest girl in the crowd moved his glass and placed the drink that was by her hand in front of Pei Nan.
When Pei Nan looked over, the girl even winked at him.
“It’s fine, no training tomorrow. Everyone, just have fun and don’t worry about me.”
Before Pei Nan’s voice could fade, the glass was immediately replaced with a large beer mug. Chen Bin’s annoying, casual voice rang out, “Our Brother Nan has a thousand-cup capacity; this bit of alcohol is nothing to him, right?”
With a live wire like Chen Bin, the atmosphere heated up quickly. They were all young people who had just stepped onto a college campus, mostly coming from all over the country and eager to make friends. After a while, they all grabbed handfuls of skewers and huddled off into their own groups.
It could be said they lived up to the name of a “mixer.”
Pei Nan hadn’t moved from his spot since he arrived. The girl next to him was the same, chatting with him from time to time. Pei Nan never liked to embarrass girls, so he chatted back sporadically.
“Speaking of which, our school has quite a few legendary figures. Someone’s popularity even knocked out the original School Grass right after enrollment.”
Pei Nan had been counting the number of colorful lights nearby, but at the words “School Grass,” his interest was piqued. He sat up slightly, his large and slightly upturned eyes fixed on the girl, waiting for her to continue.
The girl, Lin Qiao’er, felt her body stiffen under his gaze and felt a bit frustrated. This guy was handsome enough, but his personality was too “straight.” He didn’t look at pretty girls, yet he really liked listening to gossip.
She suppressed the blush caused by his staring and continued, “His name is Xue Xingqi. He was admitted with the highest score in his major. When he came to report, he reportedly caused a huge stir. He’s scholarly and refined, looking even better than a celebrity. The upperclassman who received him tried to pursue him right then and there…”
Pei Nan’s thoughts gradually drifted away. In his mind, he roughly reconstructed an image of the person: Xue Xingqi, good grades, scholarly and handsome. For now, he listed him as one of his observation targets; he would find a chance to see the man.
After getting the important information, Pei Nan went back to letting the girl’s words go in one ear and out the other. He occasionally nodded or responded with “mm” or “oh.” Later, when the girl realized this, she slapped the table and left.
This left Pei Nan with some peace and quiet.
When the mixer ended, Pei Nan helped Chen Bin to the roadside to hail a taxi. He was still sober himself, but he had to prevent the drunk Chen Bin from falling over, which was quite exhausting. Hearing Chen Bin mutter a girl’s name, Pei Nan felt a surge of irritation.
He yanked Chen Bin’s ear, his voice sounding fierce, “You damn well better call me ‘Father’ right now, or I’m leaving you to sleep on the street tonight!”
The main road was silent and almost empty. Businesses had closed one after another, and the red and green neon signs glowed on the ground like the aftermath of a grand performance.
That soft chuckle appeared at that moment, scratching lightly against Pei Nan’s heart. He turned his head slowly and saw a figure standing at the entrance of a pharmacy.
A long trench coat, sharp short hair the lights blurred the person’s face, but Pei Nan could roughly imagine that someone with this kind of aura wouldn’t look bad. However, their personality seemed a bit malicious.
What gave them the right to laugh at him?
He looked at the person, and the person looked back at him. It wasn’t until the taxi he called arrived that he finally withdrew his gaze.
All the interludes were quietly tucked away following a long, alcohol-induced sleep.
