- Chapter 3 - Day 3 of the "Runaway with the Ball"
The “ferocious” roar didn’t even stir a breeze; its deterrent power was practically zero.
Instead, it only made the lop-eared rabbit look fluffier. Its cheeks were puffed out, its three-petaled mouth was a tender pink, and its snow-white fur was smooth and supple. Its rounded body was as cute as carved jade, with a pair of obsidian-like eyes set into a face no bigger than a palm. The sight completely dazed 419, leaving the system spinning.
Dazed, it drifted over to nuzzle him, dreaming of lounging in Pei Nan’s rabbit fur in the future.
This adorable appearance made 419 completely forget Pei Nan’s true essence even as a lop-eared rabbit, he was a violent, fierce bunny. Suddenly, the rabbit turned around, opened its “bloody maw,” and used its tiny, rice cake like front teeth to death-grip the yellow light ball!
As if biting into a mango-flavored gummy candy, the lop-eared rabbit chewed away, looking as if it wanted to crush 419 and swallow it whole.
“Aaaaaah! It hurts!!! Stop it, I beg you! Waaaah! Spare the ball!!”
419 hadn’t expected it could actually be touched by a human. Though, calling him a “human” wasn’t quite accurate now. After all, with the system’s help, Pei Nan had turned into a rabbit. Realizing this, 419 was overcome with grief. It was finished. It was no longer a noble system; it was about to become Pei Nan’s punching bag.
“Stop screaming! Don’t scream!!” Pei Nan still had a fire burning in his heart. Hearing the system’s wailing pleas for help made him even more irritated. His teeth accidentally clamped down a bit harder, resulting in even more violent howling.
It was so noisy that he spat out the little yellow ball. An action that should have been quite overbearing looked incredibly cute coming from a lop-eared rabbit the size of two palms. He even tottered forward due to being off-balance, and his limp ears flopped right over his face under the force of inertia.
All of this was enough to leave Pei Nan reeling. When had he ever been this humiliated?
The white fluff-ball huddled in the corner of the vacant office, venting his powerless rage by tearing at anything he could reach. He even rubbed off quite a bit of dust from the corner of the wall, revealing a white patch of masonry, which made Pei Nan sneeze repeatedly from the irritation.
He shook his head while sneezing. Since his four limbs weren’t yet fully domesticated, he couldn’t control his steps while sneezing and accidentally hooked his front teeth onto the tassels of a decorative banner.
Pei Nan: “…”
The terrifying silence made 419 afraid to move.
The scene was at a stalemate. 419 was wrestling with the internal decision of whether to help Pei Nan when it saw that Pei Nan, after a period of frantic kicking and struggling, was now hanging quietly under the banner like a soul-less lop-eared rabbit keychain.
System has detected that the host’s inner attitude toward the mission is too negative. As a warning, the transformation will last for six hours. Please face life with a positive and proactive attitude.
A pop-up window appeared before both the person and the ball simultaneously, glowing with shimmering gold light. Every word spoken made it brighten further, nearly blinding Pei Nan’s tiny rabbit eyes.
Pei Nan let out a furious curse. The bottom of the banner snagging his tooth finally tore, and he tumbled down, rolling until he was belly-up.
“419! Six hours?! Am I supposed to spend them here?!” Pei Nan wasn’t afraid of the late hour; he often hung around the gym until after 10:00 PM. What he cared about was the future what if he couldn’t change back next time the building closed?
The lop-eared rabbit stretched out a paw to brush the dirt off his face, his violent movements tangling his long fur into clumps.
“There are no location restrictions, Host. You can go out.”
“How do I explain these things if I go out?” Pei Nan twitched his nose, gesturing toward the backpack nearby. “I’m saying, don’t you have some kind of storage space or a spiritual spring? You can’t provide any convenience to the host at all.”
Pei Nan only hated the system’s lack of features when he needed to use them, completely forgetting how he had been guarding against it this morning, wishing it were a useless system that was easy to fool.
Not holding a grudge, 419 hopped over, shrank itself a bit more, and carefully nuzzled Pei Nan. After not being rejected, it said, “This world doesn’t allow it. Many of my functions were restricted when I entered.”
“Then what kind of world would allow them?”
“Like cultivation or post-apocalyptic worlds.” Seeing that Pei Nan was finally interested in the world setting, 419 began to subtly pitch the story of this world. “You’ll understand once you hear the story content.”
Pei Nan frantically chanted to himself that a wise man submits to circumstances to suppress the anger in his chest. He moved a few steps to lie on his backpack, and only after finding a comfortable position did he say with great mercy, “Go ahead and tell it.”
419 was practically moved to tears. Flying in front of him with an excitement Pei Nan found hard to describe, it began to perform, playing two roles with one ball.
“The story originally goes like this: You are a—”
“Stop, stop, stop don’t say ‘me’.” It took Pei Nan a long while to accept the terminology of Danmei literature, his little rabbit face twisting. “Use ‘Gong’ and ‘Shou,’ or ‘1’ and ‘0’.”
419 calmly accepted Pei Nan’s stubbornness and suggestion. “The Shou is a child from a single-parent family, but he grew up very happily. Until one day, he grew an unusual body part and realized the true reason his parents divorced.”
“My parents divorced because their personalities didn’t match, not for a reason like that.” The little rabbit’s face looked grumpy.
“Oh, it’s a ‘Poetry Market’ (Huashi/Gongzino) story; you can set logic aside for a moment,” 419 continued good-naturedly. “In his despair, he went to a bar to drink his sorrows away and ended up being taken advantage of.”
“But the Shou is a very strong boy. He still has a mother to honor and care for, so he quickly pulled himself together and returned to campus after half a month of recovery.”
“As a result, he ran into one of the people from that night. The Shou recognized him and punched him.”
“That’s also illogical. If someone stabs you in the back, of course, you stab them back. He wouldn’t even be worthy of a fair fight with me. Besides, you get banned for fighting.” The little rabbit’s face looked even grumpier.
“6.” (Slang for ‘impressive/cool’). 419 focused on swallowing its pride, becoming completely immune to Pei Nan’s complaints as it continued the introduction. “The Gong wouldn’t take the beating for nothing; he had plenty of methods. The result was that the Shou was ‘eaten’ again.”
“Not only did he eat, but he also dragged the other person from that night over to eat again and again. Later, more people joined in.”
419 performed for a while but found it too dry, as all the key scenes were hidden behind mosaics. Even the system had to rely on half-guessing. “In short, it’s a very common ‘Poetry Market’ story. In the end, the Shou gets pregnant.”
The little yellow ball puffed its body out to match the mood, startling Pei Nan so much his soft fur stood on end.
“He didn’t escape even after running away. In the end, let me see… hmm, a five-person ending.”
Pei Nan had a mouth full of curses with nowhere to vent. Is a five-person ending something a human can actually do? Work five days and rest two? Does he think he’s at a job?
He only had one question now: “Is the school hunk I’m looking for one of those people?”
“Yes, he is. But based on the overall evaluation, he’s the best one of the bunch.” Even 419’s lively, milky voice couldn’t suppress his annoyance and disgust.
System has detected that the host’s inner attitude toward the mission is too negative. As a warning, the transformation time is extended to twelve hours. Please face life with a positive and proactive attitude.
“Ah!” 419 got anxious. How did the mission progress go backward instead of forward?
Pei Nan closed his eyes, deciding that what the eye doesn’t see, the heart doesn’t grieve over. He made plans to wait until the next morning to go out.
419 glanced at the low-pressure lop-eared rabbit, shrank itself cautiously, and nestled onto Pei Nan’s back.
“Actually, Host, you really don’t need to be angry. That boy is truly very good and gave the Host a lot of help.”
“Let me be quiet, thank you.”
