- Chapter 2 - Day 2 of Running Away While Pregnant
Before 419 could explain what the mission was all about, Pei Nan’s stomach could no longer hold out. It rumbled loudly and cheerfully, causing a small flush of embarrassment to appear on 419’s face.
Facing the pink hue suddenly surfacing on the little yellow ball, Pei Nan didn’t feel much embarrassment himself. To him, feeling ashamed in front of a little thing of unknown species would be a joke.
“I’m going to eat first. We’ll talk about things later.”
It was hard to say whether Pei Nan was too resistant or simply thick-skinned, but when he said they would talk later, he truly tossed the mission to the back of his mind. He subconsciously chose to forget the secret sigh of relief he had exhaled when he first saw that 30-day countdown.
Pei Nan forced himself not to show any weakness in front of the little yellow ball. Ignoring the way it chased after him while speaking in its milky voice, he stripped and changed clothes in one smooth motion, laced up his sneakers, and headed downstairs.
The cafeteria at one o’clock was nearly empty. The ladies at the service windows stood sporadically, occasionally serving the few students who arrived late.
After suffering such a major blow, Pei Nan’s appetite surged, as if he intended to transform all his complex emotions into hunger and digest every absurdity. He walked quickly to a familiar window and ordered a portion of roasted meat rice, thinking for a moment before adding a crispy chicken leg.
Seeing how handsome he was, the cafeteria lady gave him quite a few extra side dishes.
Thus, Pei Nan carried a tray piled high with food, found a clean spot at random, and began eating his lunch.
“Host, Host, are you bored? Let me tell you the story of this ‘mosaic’ book.”
Pei Nan nearly choked on the sudden voice. He coughed for half a minute before he could catch his breath.
“Are you trying to kill me?”
The veins on Pei Nan’s forehead bulged, and his face turned bright red from the violent coughing. His originally fierce expression was undermined by the thin layer of watery mist in his eyes. 419 stared at the tiny beads of sweat on the tip of Pei Nan’s nose, nearly lagging again at this vivid scene. It hurriedly apologized, “I’m sorry, Host. Next time, I’ll definitely make sure you see me before I speak.”
The little yellow ball looked teary-eyed. Having been raised by his mother, Pei Nan couldn’t quite handle this “tear attack.” He frowned, glanced at it twice, and continued eating.
“Host… you can talk to me in your mind. I can hear you.”
“Anything works?” Pei Nan narrowed his eyes, staring at the little fluff ball on the table.
“Only things related to me.”
“Fine, at least there’s some human rights left.”
“We are very nice!” 419 bounced up and down on the table in protest, looking like a talking rubber ball.
“Give you an inch and you take a mile. Give it a rest; I’m going to training in a bit.”
School had been in session for over a month. Military training had taken up more than twenty days, and before regular classes could even fully get underway, training had already shifted into high gear.
Although Pei Nan had gotten into the school on his own merit, he had only just emerged from the lazy atmosphere of summer break and had taken a few days to adapt.
Training was like rowing upstream if you didn’t move forward, you fell back. Taking advantage of the fact that there weren’t many classes over the next two days, Pei Nan wanted to practice more. He didn’t want to be distracted by other things.
419 watched anxiously from the side. Since the Host wouldn’t listen, it had no way to force him for the time being. It could only try to popularize the “One-Two-Three Disadvantages of Not Doing Missions,” but by the time Pei Nan entered the water, 419 didn’t know if he had processed any of it.
If you can’t struggle, enjoy it. Over the years, 419 had learned to stay positive because its hosts were usually reliable… 419 didn’t want to think about it anymore. It cleared its mechanical brain and went off to find a place to brood in silence.
Pei Nan was completely unaware of the system’s psychological activity; he didn’t even know when it had disappeared. He didn’t know how many laps he swam in the pool that afternoon. The exhilarating sensation of being in the water and the feeling of self-control completely washed away the gloom in his heart.
So, when the coach called for him to stop, Pei Nan shook his short hair and headed over.
Just as he reached the edge of the pool, a towel descended from the sky and covered his head. A voice from above was gentle and calm: “Dry your hair.”
Pei Nan recognized this voice. It was the captain of the swimming team, Yang Fan. He was a direct senior and a genuinely nice guy. The gentle and scholarly vibe from their first meeting still lingered in Pei Nan’s mind he didn’t look like he belonged on a swimming team; he looked more like a researcher.
Pei Nan climbed out of the water with the towel over his head, making a harmless joke: “Captain, you’re sneaking up on me. If I slip and fall later, you’d better be ready to serve me.”
“My little junior is growing up fast; you’ve learned how to shift the blame quite well.”
“Stop bickering. Pei Nan, come here.”
As soon as the coach spoke, the two of them instantly became serious.
Pei Nan gave his hair a few quick rubs before tossing the towel back into the captain’s arms. He stood before the coach and listened intently to the instructions.
His calm eyes, paired with his handsome face, unconsciously drew the frequent gazes of the other young men on the team.
Yang Fan clutched the towel in his hand, pretending to wipe his own sweat. Using the movement as cover, he licked his lips, his gaze boldly tracing the lines of Pei Nan’s body.
Everyone likes a good-looking person; Pei Nan wouldn’t have cared about this kind of attention in the past. Training and competitions were meant to be watched, and since he was good-looking, he had been used to all kinds of gazes since kindergarten.
But today was different. He felt as though today’s gazes contained something he couldn’t put his finger on something that felt prickly. He couldn’t explain it, so he could only curse that yellow ball in his heart, blaming it for disrupting his life.
Because of this, Pei Nan’s goal of practicing well fell through. After practicing the corrections the coach had made twice, he left as soon as the session was dismissed.
In the gymnasium, more than half of the team members were still there.
Seeing Pei Nan packing his things, Yang Fan was surprised that he was finishing training so early. However, he quickly revealed a friendly smile. He was always skilled at gaining the favor of others, especially “dense” straight guys like Pei Nan.
He walked over, intending to invite Pei Nan to dinner with full confidence.
“There’s a really good Meat Crab Pot place at the south gate of the school. Want to go try it?”
Pei Nan’s eyes lit up at the mention of Meat Crab Pot. The place at the south gate was high quality; the last time he went was for a dormitory gathering. Just hearing it mentioned now made his mouth start to water.
He was just about to agree when that milky little voice sounded as if it had run an 800-meter dash, panting heavily as it stopped him: “No… huff… no… you’re about to change… you can’t agree!”
Pei Nan’s open mouth silently snapped shut. He stared blankly at Yang Fan.
Yang Fan waited for a moment, and seeing that he didn’t speak, he leaned in a bit closer and patted his shoulder. “Hmm?”
“Sorry, Captain, I’ve been there before. Let’s try something else next time. I have some business to attend to, so please excuse me.”
Without waiting for Yang Fan’s reaction, Pei Nan took off as if his backside were on fire.
He left Yang Fan standing there in a daze. Yang Fan looked at his palm, recalling the sensation from a moment ago. “Interesting.”
Pei Nan didn’t run too far, because he simply had no time left. When 419 notified him, the countdown was already at three minutes. After he finally managed to find a relatively safe spot using his familiarity with the gymnasium, he unexpectedly transformed into a lop-eared rabbit in the next second.
A snow-white body and long ears Pei Nan bit his paw in disbelief. After getting a mouthful of rabbit fur, he flopped down into a “rabbit pancake,” his heart as cold as ashes.
He looked weak, pitiful, and helpless, yet he let out a thunderous roar in his mind:
“4! 1! 9! Give me an explanation!”
