She’s Fiercer Than Zombies - Chapter 5
Since childhood, people had said that Qiao Gaogao was carefree and thick-skinned, and reality indeed proved this to be true. Even in the face of an apocalyptic scenario like this, she remained cheerful and optimistic.
Especially with her senior sister by her side, she felt no worries at all.
The two drove to the nearest large supermarket. Instead of entering through the main entrance, Qiao Gaogao steered her electric scooter directly into the underground parking lot, intending to access the supermarket from there.
After all, no matter how you looked at it, the number of people in the parking lot was bound to be fewer than at the main entrance.
As they entered the parking lot, the only sound was the faint hum of the electric scooter. Before long, however, zombies began to approach, drawn by the noise.
Qiao Gaogao continued using her previous method taking them out one by one with headshots. After checking their surroundings, she proudly said to Yinxi, “See, Senior Sister? I was right. There aren’t many zombies in the parking lot now.”
“Groan!” Zombie Yinxi looked miserable, utterly famished.
Without wasting time, Qiao Gaogao drove to an elevator entrance. As soon as she got off the scooter, a timid voice came from a nearby parking space.
“H-hello, are you here to rescue us?”
The voice was weak and trembling, carrying the unmistakable tone of someone scared out of their wits. It sounded pitiful beyond words.
Both Qiao Gaogao and Yinxi turned to look.
“Ahhhh!” The man began screaming hysterically. The car window, which had been halfway open, instantly rolled back up. Faintly, they could hear him shouting in terror about zombies.
Zombie Yinxi drooped her head, looking somewhat dejected.
Qiao Gaogao reached back and soothingly patted Yinxi’s head. “It’s fine. We’re not ordinary zombies, Senior Sister. Don’t pay him any mind!”
With that, she ignored the man’s continued wailing and headed toward the elevator entrance, opting to take the stairs via the emergency exit.
The emergency staircase was eerily quiet, with only the echo of Qiao Gaogao’s footsteps reverberating in the confined space.
Carrying Yinxi on her back, she reached the second floor. Carefully, she cracked open the emergency door to take a look, then quickly closed it, inhaling sharply.
A horde of zombies was crowded right outside the emergency exit. They had likely been trying to escape via the elevator when the outbreak occurred but ended up getting bitten right there.
Qiao Gaogao glanced at the stones clutched in her senior sister’s hand there weren’t many left. If they needed more, they’d have to venture out to gather them.
Recalling the supermarket’s layout, she remembered that the second floor was the food section, while the third floor housed daily necessities. Generally, the third floor would have fewer people. So, Qiao Gaogao turned and headed up to the third floor.
Opening the emergency door again, she confirmed that there were indeed far fewer zombies here. Armed with a fire extinguisher in one hand and stones in the other, she dispatched a few zombies before resorting to bashing their heads in with the fire extinguisher.
After clearing the area near the exit, Qiao Gaogao cautiously entered the third-floor daily necessities section. Whenever she spotted a zombie, she took care of it from the shadows. Eventually, she even made her way to the kitchenware section to pick out some handy knives.
The moment she laid eyes on the cleaver, Qiao Gaogao felt her heart race with excitement.
She was thrilled!
A cleaver was far more effective than the fire extinguisher she was currently carrying.
Without delay, she grabbed two cleavers, one to wield and the other to strap onto her senior sister as a backup. It was absolutely perfect!
Zombie Yinxi stared with cloudy eyes, still filled with confusion.
It seemed she had become a storage bag? First, she was made to carry stones, and now a fruit knife was hung on her.
Perhaps the zombie outbreak had been too sudden, but the supermarket remained brightly lit, with all equipment still functioning normally and no power outages.
Thinking about the uncertain future of the apocalypse and not knowing when it would stabilize, Qiao Gaogao immediately went to find a large hiking backpack. She stuffed it full of disposable underwear and other essentials, along with feminine hygiene products like sanitary pads that would be needed later, packing the bag until it was bulging.
While scavenging, Qiao Gaogao also encountered a cashier who had turned into a zombie. She dealt with it swiftly and decisively. Before others could react and come to the supermarket to search for supplies, she, as the first person with this awareness, had already started looting mode.
It was just a pity that she alone couldn’t carry too many things and could only plan more thoroughly after reuniting with her parents.
Looking at the zombies she had taken down with headshots, Qiao Gaogao crouched down and began rummaging through their belongings.
Zombie Yinxi: “?!!!”
She watched in disbelief as Qiao Gaogao pulled out several car keys from the zombies’ pockets and proudly declared, “Senior, later we’ll take these keys to the parking lot and press the buttons. Whichever car beeps, that’s the one we’ll take! We can also bring back more supplies!”
Zombie Yinxi seemed to be growing even more dazed.
Qiao Gaogao brought Yinxi to the staircase leading to the second floor. Peering down from above, she saw many zombies and wrinkled her nose in displeasure.
She glanced back at her dazed senior and sighed softly to herself.
Her senior wasn’t afraid of being scratched by zombies and could easily go down to find food herself. But recalling how Yinxi had stumbled while walking earlier, Qiao Gaogao didn’t feel at all comfortable letting her go alone.
Qiao Gaogao went back to the fallen zombies and searched their bodies for phones. After looking around, she only found two unlocked phones from two older, middle-aged zombies.
Yinxi was no longer surprised by this. Her head drooped limply on Qiao Gaogao’s shoulder, her gaze fixed on her neck as she ground her teeth. So fragrant.
Qiao Gaogao used the phones to call her own number, saved the contacts, and then turned the ringers to maximum volume. She found a stainless steel bowl, placed one phone under it at the staircase entrance, and set up another the same way in a corner on the third floor, further from the stairs. Satisfied and proud of her plan, she brought Yinxi back to the safe passage entrance.
After ensuring they were safe, Qiao Gaogao called the phone she had left at the staircase. The piercing ringtone echoed sharply in the empty, silent supermarket. Soon, they heard the zombies’ roars and snarls as the creatures rushed toward the source of the sound!
Unfortunately, perhaps because there were too many zombies, the phone was crushed under someone’s foot before the call could even time out.
Luckily, Qiao Gaogao had a backup plan to lure the zombies even farther from the staircase.
When the bell rang again, Qiao Gaogao descended to the second floor. Carefully pushing open the emergency exit door, she found that most of the zombies had already scattered, leaving only one or two stragglers trapped in their confined spaces, anxiously and mechanically bumping into walls.
Qiao Gaogao swiftly dealt with them and then strode confidently into the second floor, heading straight for the supermarket’s fresh food section.
“Senior! It’s time for lunch!” Qiao Gaogao whispered excitedly.
Yinxi shook her head and, upon seeing the fresh raw meat on the cutting board, suddenly turned her head to the side and retched.
“Huh? Not eating?” Qiao Gaogao was puzzled. Didn’t zombies eat raw meat?
Yinxi began to struggle, emitting low, angry growls from her throat as if she were upset.
“Don’t move, don’t move. I’ll let you down.” Qiao Gaogao quickly untied the curtain fabric binding the two of them. Once Yinxi was on the ground, she let out a very clear “hmph!” directed at Qiao Gaogao.
“Ah?” Qiao Gaogao scratched her head, her doll-like face full of confusion. Why was her senior huffing at her?
Zombie Yinxi looked down at her stiff limbs, her expression sullen but still carrying a hint of stubbornness. She tried hard to control her arms and legs to take a step.
“Ah!”
Qiao Gaogao let out a small gasp and quickly caught Yinxi as she stumbled forward, her heart racing. “Senior, where do you want to go? I’ll take you.”
Failing to walk once again, Yinxi looked at Qiao Gaogao with a pitiful expression, unable to understand how she had ended up like this.
“Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. I’ll always be with you!” Qiao Gaogao comforted her with a kiss on the cheek, softening her voice. “Where do you want to go?”
Yinxi sulked for a moment before quickly raising her hand and pointing toward the cooked food section.
Seeing this, Qiao Gaogao suddenly understood. So her senior still ate meat just cooked meat. Thinking about it, it made sense. A person with self-awareness, especially someone with a cleanliness obsession, how could she possibly accept eating raw meat?
Quickly bringing Yinxi to the cooked food section, where most of the food was still well-preserved, Qiao Gaogao hurriedly found a chair so Yinxi could sit down and eat.
Yinxi didn’t start eating immediately. Instead, she raised her hands in front of Qiao Gaogao.
Qiao Gaogao tilted her head, then quickly understood and fetched a bottle of water to wash Yinxi’s hands.
Yinxi let out two satisfied low growls.
After washing her hands, Yinxi pushed the first box of roast duck toward Qiao Gaogao and picked up another portion for herself.
Seeing this, Qiao Gaogao felt a sweet warmth in her heart, and her smile brightened.
“Senior, you eat first. I’ll go gather some supplies.”
With that, she swiftly packed all the frozen, packaged steaks and similar items from the freezer into the empty backpack she had brought along. After all, there was a refrigerator at home to store them not only did she need meat, but her senior did too.
Once the backpack was filled with raw meat, she moved on to pack preserved foods like smoked meats and other dry goods that were easy to store, making the backpack heavy and full.
Qiao Gaogao gathered a bit of everything she could think of and then pushed the shopping cart loaded with the backpack over to Yinxi. She found her senior wearing disposable gloves, eating a roasted chicken leg with a displeased expression on her face.
“What’s wrong? Doesn’t it taste good?” Qiao Gaogao was nearly overwhelmed by how adorable her senior was. Why hadn’t she noticed this side of her before?
Yinxi nodded gloomily, then opened her mouth and pointed to her throat. Worried that Qiaogao might not understand her meaning, she made a drinking gesture.
Qiaogao immediately understood and hurriedly brought over two large boxes of bottled water. She unscrewed one and handed it to Yinxi.
Yinxi quickly took several gulps, and her expression finally eased a little.
“Senior, how about we go look for your parents later?” Qiaogao suddenly suggested.
Qiaogao had known for some time that the reason Yinxi had chosen to study biological science was because both her parents were experts in the field, currently working at a research institute.
If they could find them, perhaps they could figure out why Yinxi had ended up like this or if there was any way for her to return to normal.
