She Said That Kisses and Hugs Are Needed for Redemption [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 7
“Did you meet anyone on the street?” Fu Lancen poured herself a cup of cool tea, took a small sip, and asked casually.
The Nine-Tailed Fox clan had an acute sense of smell, and just now, she had caught an unusual scent lingering faintly on Lu Xi.
This scent was the most unique tracking pheromone among the fox clan, refined from the fur of a Nine-Tailed Fox’s final tail. It emitted different fragrances depending on the fox, making it a form of communication among their kind.
And the tracking pheromone on Lu Xi.
“You know?” Lu Xi glanced at Fu Lancen, noticing her delicate little nose twitch slightly, as if deeply inhaling something.
She then raised her arm and sniffed her own sleeve. “You smelled it?”
Before long, Lu Xi recounted in detail her encounter with the man and woman on the street. Seeing Fu Lancen lost in thought, she added quietly, “The woman’s scent was very similar to yours. And she seemed to notice that I carried traces of your aura.”
“So, they’re from Qingqiu? Here to take you back?”
As dusk fell, dim light cast shadows on the face of the radiant young woman, making her expression seem conflicted.
Lu Xi didn’t like seeing Fu Lancen shrouded in darkness. She waved her hand toward the wall, and the sconces there flickered to life, bathing the room in warm, orange candlelight that brought a healthier flush to Fu Lancen’s pale complexion.
“At the very least, I’m your savior,” Lu Xi said gently, softening her tone. “You don’t need to be so guarded around me.”
A strange emotion flickered through the beautiful fox’s eyes before she fixed her gaze intently on the woman before her, who had lowered her guard.
“If they’re also here to take you back, then let’s leave this place. Your injuries are mostly healed now.” Lu Xi leaned back, openly allowing Fu Lancen to scrutinize her. “After all, I don’t want you to be dragged back like this.”
Her eyes were clear and sincere, devoid of any ulterior motives.
Fu Lancen clenched her fingers inside her sleeves, that peculiar feeling rising in her chest again. She had always believed no one would be kind without reason, yet Lu Xi’s presence left her deeply unsettled. She simply couldn’t understand, what did this woman want from her?
Those eyes sparkled with fragmented light, reflecting her own image within them. Fu Lancen averted her gaze silently. After a long hesitation, she finally voiced her doubt once more.
“Why did you save me?”
This question had been asked more than once.
This time, Lu Xi still smiled patiently.
Just as Fu Lancen expected her to repeat her usual answer that she had done it out of boredom, to pass the time the woman’s clear voice rang in her ears:
“Because I came here for the sole purpose of saving you.”
Fu Lancen: “…”
Had this been a man speaking such sentimental words, she might have assumed he was captivated by her beauty.
But this was not a man. And when Lu Xi looked at her, there was only admiration in her eyes not a trace of ill intent.
Yet despite everything, hearing those words made her heart tremble uncontrollably for a fleeting moment.
Lowering her head, her half-lidded eyes concealing the faint traces of gloom within, she slowly revealed the identities of those two individuals.
“The two you encountered are likely my cousin and her senior martial brother.”
Cousin?
Lu Xi was slightly surprised, because in the original story, the female antagonist had her identity usurped by her cousin, who then married into the Nine Heavens and became the wife of Divine Venerable Qi Ran.
Just as Lu Xi wore a sympathetic expression but hesitated over how to console Fu Lancen, the latter spoke in a cold tone, “My cousin is named Bai Qingyuan. Her elder sister, Bai Youran is already the wife of a Divine Venerable in the Heavenly Realm.”
Her voice grew softer toward the end, carrying a hint of melancholy.
Lu Xi observed her discreetly, wondering if Fu Lancen harbored feelings for Qi Ran, which might explain her sorrow.
After a moment of consideration, she asked, “Do you have feelings for him?”
Fu Lancen was taken aback, then slowly shook her head. “Perhaps it’s because I knew from childhood that he would be my husband, so I paid more attention to him than others.”
The words slipped out before she realized it.
Why had she so readily explained herself to this woman? Given their relationship, there was no need to be so forthcoming.
She didn’t dwell on it, but at this point, Fu Lancen no longer harbored the initial distrust. She briefly recounted to Lu Xi how her marriage had been stolen.
“I knew my cousin admired Divine Venerable Qi Ran, so when she did this, though I was furious that she humiliated me, I never thought of taking her life. Yet she pushed me relentlessly, imprisoning me in the forbidden mountains, seeking to drain my essence to nourish herself.”
“Now that I’ve escaped, without my essence to sustain her, her cultivation will stagnate. She will stop at nothing to recapture me.”
As she spoke, Fu Lancen’s expression was a mix of sorrow and resentment. Her long, narrow, and alluring eyes shimmered with emotion as she fixed her gaze on the woman beside her. “So Bai Qingyuan’s presence here is likely to capture me and return me to Qingqiu.”
“The man with her is from the Dragon Clan, a master of profound cultivation. I am no match for him. The path ahead will be fraught with peril. Knowing this, do you still wish to accompany me?”
The stakes were high, and Fu Lancen had no intention of dragging others into this especially Lu Xi, who had treated her well. She shouldn’t be entangled in such a vortex.
The room fell into a long silence. Outside the window, the wind gradually stilled, and the thick clouds dispersed, revealing a bright crescent moon climbing into the sky.
The cold moonlight spilled through the doorway, illuminating every corner of the room.
Lu Xi set down her teacup and gazed at the radiant young woman bathed in moonlight, a faint smile curling her lips. “Perfect. I haven’t had dealings with the Dragon Clan in a long time. This will be a good opportunity to test whether their younger generation is still as tough and resilient as they used to be.”
Fu Lancen: “…”
The strange atmosphere shattered instantly. She massaged her temples and silently turned away, deciding not to discuss the matter further with Lu Xi.
How utterly tactless!
But with Lu Xi’s attitude made clear, Fu Lancen felt reassured and chose to remain in the town to continue recuperating.
Another two months passed. Autumn was nearly over, and the early winter chill began to set in.
Now fully recovered, Fu Lancen packed the few belongings she had acquired over the past months, preparing to leave the town with Lu Xi.
The sky was gloomy today, with thick clouds hanging low over the town, pressing down so heavily it felt almost suffocating.
The two of them, having packed their belongings, were ready to check out of the small courtyard. As soon as they opened the door, they spotted a man and a woman standing in the empty street, their gazes calm and composed, as if they had been waiting for them.
