She Said That Kisses and Hugs Are Needed for Redemption [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 3
Fu Lancen shivered as she saw the glint in the woman’s eyes. She had only ever witnessed such a gaze among mortals back when she was young and mischievous, sneaking out of Qingqiu. Every mortal who laid eyes on her had worn that same greedy expression, as if they couldn’t wait to snatch her up and cradle her in their arms.
Could it be that this mysterious woman also harbored such covetous intentions toward her?!
Absolutely not! Though she was currently down on her luck, she was still the princess of the fox clan. How could she allow herself to be imprisoned and reduced to a captive plaything at someone else’s mercy?
A shadow flickered in Fu Lancen’s eyes as she quietly gathered the faintly recovered strength within her, preparing to strike the woman hard when she inevitably succumbed to the bewitching allure of her charm.
Yet before she could act, a faint noise from outside shattered the silence of the room.
Her damp nose twitched she caught the scent. Her kin!
Had they already noticed her disappearance and come searching for her so quickly?!
The wind picked up.
The half-open window creaked as it swayed. When Lu Xi glanced outside, she saw the darkening sky, thick with rolling storm clouds that seemed to carry an endless chill.
Sensing the little fox’s restless agitation beneath her palm, she gently patted its soft little head. “What are you afraid of?”
“I’ll protect you.”
The words, devoid of any emotional inflection, reached Fu Lancen’s ears. Her brow furrowed slightly before she glared fiercely at the woman. “If you hadn’t restrained me, I would’ve escaped long before they arrived!”
Lu Xi was momentarily speechless. “Nonsense. You’re injured, you shouldn’t be moving recklessly.”
Outside, the wind howled, shaking the trees below until their branches trembled violently. Leaves tore free, only to be swept up and shredded by the gale.
As their voices fell, the wind abruptly stilled, as though everything had settled into an eerie calm, leaving not a ripple behind.
Footsteps echoed from downstairs, and the innkeeper’s obsequious voice drifted up to the pair.
“Yes, yes! This humble one saw it with my own eyes! That woman was shrouded in mist, just like the immortal cultivators I’ve seen before.”
“Exactly, exactly! She was holding a white fox in her arms and it looked gravely injured.”
Lu Xi tightened her grip on the struggling fox, smoothing its fur. “Stop moving. They won’t take you away.”
The woman’s voice was cool and detached, yet Fu Lancen detected a faint undercurrent of soothing reassurance in her tone.
Her expression complicated, Fu Lancen slowly lifted her gaze. The woman lounged lazily against the headboard, her half-tied hair cascading down her back, a few loose strands draped over her chest. As her fingers lightly stroked the fox’s curled back, her hair swayed gracefully, tracing a delicate arc over her shoulders.
That composed, unshakable demeanor suddenly made Fu Lancen feel a little more at ease.
Come to think of it, this woman had managed to spirit her away from the forbidden back mountains without a trace and even swaggered right past those blind celestial lords. She must have considerable power.
Perhaps she could try trusting her, just this once?
As she pondered, another knock came at the door this time, it was the innkeeper’s voice.
“Honored guest, the waiter mentioned earlier that you requested bandages and medicine. I thought you might also need some hot water, so I’ve brought some up. Would you mind opening the door so my attendant can deliver it inside?”
Hearing this, Lu Xi placed the little fox snugly under the blankets, ensuring not a single inch was exposed before leisurely making her way to the door.
“Creak!” The door opened.
Lu Xi had barely cracked it open a sliver when someone outside forcefully grabbed the wooden door and shoved it wide open.
She glanced sideways and saw, besides the familiar innkeeper, three ordinary-looking men. As the trio boldly scanned the room, Lu Xi leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed and smirked at the innkeeper. “Where’s the hot water?”
Caught off guard by the question, the innkeeper took a few nervous steps back, stammering, “These gentlemen are from the authorities. They’re investigating a case and need to search every guest’s room. Please bear with us.”
Lu Xi gave him a sidelong glance before turning her attention to the man about to step inside. “This room is simple everything’s in plain sight. Unless you’ve got poor eyesight, sir?”
The man at the back bristled at her words and was about to teach this insolent mortal a lesson with a minor spell when his elder brother stopped him.
“Don’t act recklessly while we’re outside.”
As descendants of an ancient celestial clan, they were immortals, and casting spells on mortals without cause would invite divine retribution.
That was why they had concealed their identities upon arriving here, posing as officials to conduct their search better to err on the side of caution.
The leader, a man in gray robes, swept his indifferent gaze over the unremarkable Lu Xi and said coolly, “This is a serious matter. We must inspect thoroughly.”
Without waiting for her response, he strode into the room.
For some reason, the candlelight inside grew brighter, illuminating every corner as if to leave nothing hidden.
The room was small, so after a brief search, the three men found nothing.
Finally, they gathered by the neatly made bed, ready to lift the covers.
Lu Xi appeared beside them, pressing a jade-white hand over theirs to stop them. “My personal belongings are under here. You can’t just rummage through them.”
Sensing something amiss, the gray-robed man narrowed his eyes before abruptly shaking off her hand and yanking the blanket away in one swift motion.
“Ah!” Lu Xi shrieked in alarm, flinging herself onto the bed in a panic, arms flailing as she tried to cover the so-called “personal belongings.” “Don’t look!”
But in the split second the blanket was thrown aside, the three men had already seen everything on the bed clearly.
That white, pudgy little lump. What in the world was that?!
Perhaps just waking up, the white blob blinked dazedly at the three men by the bed and let out a startled squeal.
This pitiful creature was absolutely not their noble nine-tailed fox!
Hearing the little thing’s distressed cries, Lu Xi hurriedly patted its head, covering its eyes while soothing it. “Shh, don’t be scared! They’re not bad people they won’t take you away or eat you! It’s okay, it’s okay!”
The white blob didn’t resist her touch. After a careful look, the gray-robed man confirmed this thing couldn’t possibly be a fox, let alone the proud princess they were searching for.
However, he was genuinely curious about this creature that bore such a striking resemblance to their fox clan. His expression was somewhat complicated, and after a long pause, he finally asked Lu Xi, who was still diligently trying to calm the animal, “Is this thing your pet? What exactly is it? A fox? Or a dog?”
Lu Xi seemed a little embarrassed: “Please forgive the laughable sight, sir. This is a little pet I picked up when I was a child and have raised to this size. But she’s timid and afraid of strangers, so I beg your pardon, sir, your pardon.”
“As for what she is? Well folks back in my hometown call her a Samoyed, heh heh heh…”
