In high school, Lu Shuyu had a crush on Xia Leshuang. Coming from a single-parent family, Shuyu was quiet, pale, and frail. In contrast, Leshuang was a “star child” from a famous family—beautiful, radiant, and popular. The two only became close in their second year of high school due to an accident. Shuyu hid her crush carefully, but Leshuang saw right through her:
“Little Shuyu, do you like me?”
Shuyu hesitated and didn’t answer. She never got the chance to say it again. Xia Leshuang left without saying goodbye. A year later, she became China’s youngest “Film Queen” (Best Actress).
Eight years later, Lu Shuyu has worked her way up to become a Deputy Producer for a competitive variety show. Meanwhile, Xia Leshuang has become a “washed-up” actress. They reunite at a dinner party hosted by the show’s investors.
Xia Leshuang is no longer the proud, high-spirited girl of her youth. Unable to watch her suffer, Lu Shuyu stands up to block a drink for her. “Thank you, Producer Lu,” Xia Leshuang says with a smile, politely declining. “I have a decent tolerance.” She downs the drink skillfully, looking like a seasoned veteran of the social scene.
Later, on the set of the variety show, Leshuang is arm-wrestling Shuyu. To get Shuyu to go easy on her, the other guests tease: “Producer Lu, do you have a partner? Let us introduce you to someone if you let her win!”
Looking into Xia Leshuang’s nervous eyes, Shuyu smiles and says heartlessly: “Sorry, I already have someone I like.” Xia Leshuang—an eight-year Muay Thai enthusiast—loses the match.
Eventually, after carving a path to success in the industry, the two are trapped together during a heavy rainstorm. Xia Leshuang finally musters the courage to ask the question that has haunted her: “Shuyu… is the person you like better than me?”
Lu Shuyu kisses her with a damp, lingering affection. “From beginning to end, it has always been you.”
