- Chapter 8 - The Livestream Room
Livehouse…
The bullet chat exploded instantly.
[Wait, what’s going on?!]
[God Chi has a kid???]
[Is this a joke? Ahhhh, what a massive bombshell!]
As these comments flew by, Chi Yeyu’s figure appeared directly in front of the camera, a teenage girl in a school uniform tucked under her arm.
In an instant, everyone’s eyes were fixed on her.
The girl had neatly trimmed black hair that curved against her cheeks like the stroke of a calligraphy brush. Her bangs hung straight across her brow, and her narrow eyes looked like cold stars hidden behind a thin mist.
“Please stop joking around,” her lips moved, her voice laced with helplessness.
“Who’s joking?” Chi Yeyu rested a hand on the girl’s head, looking at the others in confusion. “Why are you guys acting so weird? Why are you all frozen….wait, Melon, why are you holding your phone up?”
Melon had completely forgotten to turn off the livestream. At this point, running away wouldn’t solve anything; she could only hope that Chi Yeyu would explain this “surprise” herself.
“I’m livestreaming,” she said sincerely.
Li Lingling flew into a rage: “Chi Yeyu!! You better clarify this right now! I don’t want the first time I hit the trending searches to be because of this!”
Yu Xiu shrugged, wearing a detached, mischievous smirk.
“You’re livestreaming?!” Chi Yeyu’s cat-like eyes widened. She lunged forward to look at the stream on Melon’s phone. The situation was already like a runaway horse, out of control. The chat was filled with nothing but question marks and exclamation points.
[Where did this kid come from?? Is she really God Chi’s daughter? No way, right?!]
[Ahhh, I’m heartbroken]
[This is unscientific. God Chi looks so much like a lesbian, how could she be straight?]
[Maybe this is what they call ‘Desperate Straight Woman’ syndrome…]
[Wait, why do you guys actually believe it? Obviously, Chi Yeyu is joking. This kid is wearing a W-Middle School uniform, there’s no way she could have given birth to a high schooler.]
[Agreed. This must be a new band member.]
[New member!!! OMGGGG]
[W-Middle students usually don’t have time for bands, do they?]
[Honestly, I think she looks a bit like…]
Thankfully, it wasn’t a huge problem.
Chi Yeyu snatched the phone from Melon, flipped the camera toward herself, and clarified: “She’s not mine biologically. I’m not capable of producing a kid this big.”
Shi Shuxue stepped into the frame. Seeing the chat, her thin eyebrows furrowed slightly: “Chi Yeyu is simply my legal guardian. My mother entrusted me to her.”
Her temperament was calm, her voice clean and cool. Despite her young age, she appeared much more reliable than Chi Yeyu. Her words carried a natural sense of credibility.
“Guardian?” Li Lingling’s golden ‘bean’ eyebrows shot up. “Who was blind enough to trust you as a guardian?”
Chi Yeyu gasped: “Am I not a trustworthy person in your eyes?”
“Nobody thinks that!!” Li Lingling was shocked by her lack of self-awareness, her eyes reflecting a complex mix of disbelief.
“I used to hold her when she was little!”
“Aren’t you going to introduce the kid? The viewers are curious too.” Yu Xiu pulled out a cigarette. She didn’t light it, just let it dangle from her lips as she pointed toward Shi Shuxue.
Chi Yeyu draped an arm over Shi Shuxue’s shoulder, selectively answering the chat: “Her name is Shi Shuxue. High schooler. Not a band member.”
[So disappointing, I thought she was a rookie.]
[But her voice is so nice!! Really not considering it?]
[I feel like this kid is going to do great things!]
“Wow, Shuxue, they’re all praising you. Talk more for them. Want to do an introduction? Three minutes in Chinese or two in English,” Chi Yeyu said happily.
Shi Shuxue stared up at her silently.
“Stop torturing the kid, you’re so mean,” Yu Xiu pulled a half-smile. “Can’t you see she’s judging you?”
Chi Yeyu acted like a parent bringing their kid home for a holiday feast to show them off, huffing indignantly: “I just want to brag about my kid!”
“You’re beyond saving,” Yu Xiu commented.
Li Lingling deeply agreed.
Shi Shuxue scanned Chi Yeyu’s three teammates. Out of politeness, she didn’t linger on any of them for too long. Based on the information she had just searched for, she had already matched their names to their faces.
The girl with the most vivid reactions was Li Lingling, the band’s bassist. She wore two short golden braids that bounced like ears of wheat by her head. She was young, likely a university student, and seemed to clash with Chi Yeyu constantly usually getting provoked by her.
This made sense. With a captain like this, it was hard not to get annoyed.
The woman with the cigarette was Yu Xiu, the lead singer and guitarist. Her voice was unique, slightly raspy, and she looked like she was trying to quit smoking. With her brown hair tied in a high ponytail, she had the most understated look of the group.
The girl called “Melon” was the keyboardist. Shi Shuxue hadn’t found her real name. She was petite and had been holding the camera from the start, the phone covering half her face. The bright green color of her hair was particularly striking.
Do they go to the hair salon as a group activity?
Shi Shuxue’s mind wandered for a moment until Melon, the only one projecting a friendly and approachable aura, spoke up: “Only Chi Yeyu has introduced her. We haven’t introduced ourselves to her yet.”
“Right. Chi Yeyu definitely didn’t tell Shuxue about us. Given her character, even if she did, it wouldn’t be anything good,” Li Lingling pouted.
“Alright, line up and count off. Introduce yourselves from left to right,” Chi Yeyu barked, deepening her voice to sound like a captain.
“Screw off!” Li Lingling swung a water bottle, trying to hit her.
Chi Yeyu dodged, laughing as the camera shook wildly.
[Please stop, I’m gonna be sick!]
[So dizzy, so blurry, so abstract…]
[Stop fighting!! Someone stop them!]
[Don’t count on the other two jerks; they’re more likely to fan the flames.]
Chi Yeyu and Li Lingling performed their usual comedy routine. Shi Shuxue, who was originally being held by Chi Yeyu, became the “pole” they circled around. Li Lingling missed every swing of the bottle, she couldn’t just swing recklessly, so her face turned red with frustration.
“Don’t hit my kid! If you hit Shuxue, I’m gonna have a fit,” Chi Yeyu said while dodging.
“Then get away from her!” Li Lingling shrieked.
You’re already having a fit…
Shi Shuxue was getting dizzy from the circling. Chi Yeyu’s figure was like a nimble rabbit, darting back and forth. She couldn’t help but cover her head: “Please, stop making a scene.”
Chi Yeyu stopped instantly.
Li Lingling was stunned: “Shuxue, you actually used ‘Sir/Madam’ to address her???”
“She counts as an elder.” Shi Shuxue didn’t see an issue with the honorific. Chi Yeyu was Shi Xianyu’s friend and her current legal guardian using “you” was perfectly logical.
[She is NOT someone worthy of respect, hahahaha!]
[Hey, I won’t allow you to talk about our Goddess Chi like that!]
[This is God Chi! The omnipotent, wealthy, beautiful God]
[I’m shocked God Chi actually listens to someone.]
[I didn’t think anyone could actually stop them from fighting.]
[A savior… I declare this high school guest is our savior.]
Shi Shuxue said calmly, “It’s okay, no need for introductions. I already know who you are. Go ahead and practice. I can help hold the camera.”
“You know us? Do you usually watch our performances?” Li Lingling asked. When did their ragtag group get famous among high schoolers?
“I don’t watch bands. I just looked you up on my phone,” Shi Shuxue said truthfully.
“You’re so well-behaved,” Yu Xiu sighed. “Please don’t let this adult lead you astray.”
Chi Yeyu attacked her with a glare.
Melon, worried she’d be bored in the rehearsal room since a tripod could handle the camera, asked: “Are you interested in any instruments? The equipment here is pretty complete. Want to try something?”
The rehearsal room was spacious. At the far end sat a dark wood drum kit, the cymbals polished to a shine, with an unopened energy drink sitting by the hi-hat. To the right was a keyboard to the left, three guitars and two basses stood against the wall above stacks of black speakers, cables tucked into the crevices of the floor.
Influenced by her “stranger” of a mother, Shi Shuxue had a natural aversion to rock bands. If possible, she wouldn’t mind never touching a loud instrument for the rest of her life.
“It’s fine. You’re busy, don’t worry about me.” Her voice was pure and cool, revealing neither like nor dislike.
[Wow, her voice is so pretty, like my first love who’s been dead for 800 years.]
[Little sister, consider being the lead singer. This band’s current singer is hopeless.]
[Sister Xiu: Are you being polite?]
[I want to hear her sing Powder Snow Swing. I feel like she’d suit it perfectly.]
[Agreed.]
[Looking at her face makes me think of an old friend.]
[Ugh, can we stop bringing up sad things?]
Chi Yeyu had already handed the phone to Shi Shuxue. she tossed her jacket onto the sofa, cracked open a room temperature Monster, and sat at the drums to adjust the hi-hat height.
Underneath, she wore a black tight-fitting sleeveless top that accentuated the beautiful lines of her shoulder blades. Her forearms were lean and muscular, hiding an explosive power.
Shi Shuxue wondered if she was cold.
It wasn’t summer, and Shi Shuxue herself was wearing three layers of clothes outside.
[Newbie question: What is Powder Snow Swing? I can’t find it.]
[The full name is Powder Snow Buried the Swing. It’s an original song written by the previous captain…] [Previous captain?]
[The person who started this band, but she already left.]
[Let’s not talk about that in the chat…]
[Right, let’s just appreciate God Chi’s beautiful body instead.]
[Hiss… heavy breathing…]
[Did the person above just turn into a zombie??]
The chat quickly buried the brief interlude.
Sitting behind the drum kit, Chi Yeyu tapped the pedal to test the tension, the cymbals and drumheads letting out a few short, crisp sounds. She tilted her chin at the others, her deep blue hair brushing against her ear studs.
