Synopsis
Lu Xingning transmigrates into a book, becoming the live-in doctor for a mentally ill painter, Qiao Yuxin. Her only mission is to cure Qiao Yuxin.
In the book, Qiao Yuxin, after creating her masterpiece “One Thousand Cranes in a Cage,” descends into madness and becomes a complete lunatic.
The first time Lu Xingning meets Qiao Yuxin, the gaunt woman first screams, then scrambles under the bed, cowering like a small animal, baring her teeth at her.
Lu Xingning tries to coax her out. The moment she reaches under the bed, Qiao Yuxin grabs her and bites her like a mad dog.
Terrified, Lu Xingning doesn’t dare to get close to her again. All she can do is stare blankly at the paintings on the wall, folding paper stars and paper cranes.
Finally, Qiao Yuxin lets her guard down and crawls out from under the bed, speaking to her on her own.
When Lu Xingning discovers that when Qiao Yuxin isn’t in a manic state, she’s so weak she can’t even drink water on her own, she realizes that the prerequisite for a cure is to first keep her alive.
After that, Lu Xingning uses the little medical knowledge she picked up from her life in the real world to treat Qiao Yuxin.
She goes to a 200-meter-high cliff behind the mountain to gather herbs for Qiao Yuxin, day after day, rain or shine.
When Qiao Yuxin can’t swallow anything, she feeds her mouth-to-mouth.
When Qiao Yuxin is cold, she holds her close to warm her.
When Qiao Yuxin can’t sleep, she coaxes her to look at the stars by the window and teaches her how to fold paper cranes.
When Qiao Yuxin screams in her sleep, she kisses her and comforts her, promising to protect her.
Finally, under Lu Xingning’s meticulous care, Qiao Yuxin regains her sanity.
Lu Xingning’s points skyrocket. She’s so happy, seeing that she’s about to escape the book world and return to her own life as a teacher.
She turns around and sees a barefoot Qiao Yuxin holding a glass bottle full of paper cranes. She chokes back a sob and says:
“Sister, take them, take them all. But… can you please not leave Yuxin?”
