Running Away While Pregnant with the Villain’s Child - Chapter 13
“I remember only telling you to help her…” Luo Xingran looked at Shen Yao, who had come to her for help, and felt a mounting headache.
“Exactly! I just rescued her from that trash fire of a family. Who knew she’d repay my kindness with enmity by insisting on clinging to me!” Shen Yao said righteously, her eyebrows knitting together so tightly they almost formed a knot.
“But it seems like the help you’re asking for isn’t about how to stop her from clinging to you.” Luo Xingran looked at the lively Shen Yao before her. She recalled the long-form commentary she had once written about Shen Yao, which was entirely because the character was far too much of a ‘silly sweet’ trope.
Originally, Luo Xingran thought that by getting rid of Li Dan, Shen Yao wouldn’t end up in those “silly sweet” situations anymore. After all, the girl was genuinely a good person.
As she surveyed the current situation, Luo Xingran fell into deep thought.
Could it be that it’s not just the male lead who makes people lose their intelligence, but the male lead’s true love does it, too?
“Yeah, she goes out and works hard to earn money every day, only to hand it over to me like she’s paying tribute. People who don’t know better would think I’m some kind of cruel landlord!”
Up to this point, Luo Xingran felt that what this girl was saying was quite normal. Unfortunately, with the very next sentence, Shen Yao’s style took a sudden, sharp turn.
“Can’t you help me convince her to stop working? Then I can just support her—I’m super rich!”
Luo Xingran… Luo Xingran wanted to turn around and walk away.
“How is that any different from keeping her like a pet?” Pei Junzhuo noticed that her little idiot’s mind had gone completely blank.
Hearing Pei Junzhuo’s words, Luo Xingran nodded frantically.
“Exactly, exactly! She’s an independent person; of course you need to respect her,” Luo Xingran hurried to chime in.
“But she gives all her money to me. Since she has nowhere to sleep, she can only sleep with me.”
“I’m not used to sleeping with other people…” Shen Yao reluctantly revealed her true reason.
Luo Xingran’s mental state shifted from “…” to “???” and finally to “!!!”
She was starting to feel like the one being “kept” was actually this idiot, Shen Yao.
Meanwhile, Pei Junzhuo, watching from the sidelines, felt that this Tan Nuannuan possessed the aura of a kindred spirit. If her family background had been better, she and Pei Junzhuo might have been very similar.
Ever since Shen Yao had taken Tan Nuannuan to the Tan family, the woman had stuck to her like glue. Shen Yao felt like her brain was short-circuiting.
“Nuannuan, you’re here!” Shen Yao saw Tan Nuannuan walking in through the door and flashed a wide, beaming smile.
“Weren’t you just…?” Luo Xingran whispered.
“Don’t even start. Last time I said one harsh word to her, she cried the whole night,” Shen Yao squeezed the words out through her teeth, terrified that Tan Nuannuan might overhear.
“This Mango Sago with Pomelo is delicious, come sit down and try some.” Shen Yao gave up the outer chair to Tan Nuannuan and scooted further inside.
“Alright.” With a faint smile on her face, Tan Nuannuan took the milk tea Shen Yao handed her.
“Oh, right. Didn’t you want to ask me who the person who really helped you was?”
“Actually, it was Xingran who told me to help you. She’s the one who’s truly a good person!” Shen Yao spoke with a tone so dramatic it was bordering on a poetry recital.
“I will definitely repay you properly, though I really don’t have much money right now.” Tan Nuannuan looked very embarrassed, appearing somewhat distressed.
Luo Xingran—who had once written a ten-thousand-word review proving that Tan Nuannuan was actually a man-eating flower—felt goosebumps break out as she looked at the girl’s current demeanor.
Being intimately familiar with the plot, she didn’t find that smile friendly at all; Luo Xingran felt there was a lot hidden behind it.
Of course, it was also possible that her original analysis had been wrong.
“You guys chat for a bit. I’m going to go see if my egg tarts are ready.” After everyone sat down and engaged in a “friendly” chat for a moment, Shen Yao chose to step away for a while.
As she left, she winked desperately at Luo Xingran. It was blindingly obvious that she was hoping Luo Xingran could save her.
“Um…” Before Luo Xingran could even open her mouth, Tan Nuannuan cut her off.
“I know it was you who made Shen Yao rescue me. I’ll pay you back the money in the future.”
“But from beginning to end, the only person I acknowledge is Shen Yao.”
Tan Nuannuan’s tone as she spoke was truly infuriating.
“Are you mistaken about something?”
The smile on Pei Junzhuo’s face turned cold and dangerous.
“Rescuing you was only because Xingran is kind. Giving back money? That’s hardly necessary.”
Seeing the atmosphere turn tense and hostile, Luo Xingran quickly waved her hands to de-escalate.
“I didn’t contribute any money either; I just said a few words. The one who truly saved you was, of course, Shen Yao.”
“I don’t want your money. I only hope you’ll be a little nicer to Shen Yao.”
After hearing Luo Xingran’s words, Tan Nuannuan felt that ever since she met Shen Yao, everyone she encountered was a “good person.”
“Thank you, but I probably can’t do that.”
Luo Xingran froze at Tan Nuannuan’s words.
“I am not a good person. I will use any means necessary to survive.”
“Shen Yao is currently my only motivation to keep living, so I will only hold onto her more tightly.”
“I will do my best not to hurt her…”
When Shen Yao returned carrying the burgers and chicken wings, she felt the atmosphere was a bit strange.
“What are you talking about?”
“Why do you all look so serious?”
Pei Junzhuo spoke up first, saying with a smile, “It’s nothing, just a couple of jokes.”
As Shen Yao set the food down, Tan Nuannuan instinctively scooted further into her seat to make room.
“It seems those jokes weren’t very funny, then, since you’re all so solemn.”
“Hurry up and eat! The burgers here are actually pretty good!”
“I used to love this place, but my mom wouldn’t let me eat here often. Humph!”
“What is maintaining a figure compared to satisfying a craving?”
Since Shen Yao put it that way, everyone picked up their burgers.
It wasn’t until they actually took a bite that they understood why Shen Yao liked this place so much. Inside the burger buns, there were actually tiny, fine bits of pineapple.
Because of this, the otherwise ordinary bread became distinct from any other place. This burger was indeed more refreshing than a typical one.
Shen Yao had only finished half of hers when she heard Pei Junzhuo ask her a question.
“If a penniless person wants the most expensive pearl necklace in a display window, Shen Yao, what do you think they should do?”
The moment the question was asked, Tan Nuannuan looked at Pei Junzhuo with sharp alertness.
The underlying meaning of the question was far too pointed.
Even Luo Xingran was a bit surprised that Pei Junzhuo would ask something like that. Although the metaphor was a bit blunt, it perfectly suited the current situation between the two of them.
“Become a celebrity!” Shen Yao gave an unconventional answer.
“Xingran, what do you think?” Shen Yao looked toward Luo Xingran, her chewing never stopping.
“I think,” Luo Xingran replied, “that if this person wants the pearl necklace, then they should treat it well.”
“Instead of seeing something else beautiful later and going off to buy that instead.”
