- Chapter 1 - Reborn as a Baby
The private hospital under the Wen Group had been fully reserved since the beginning of the month by the head of the Jiang family, exclusively for her childhood sweetheart and beloved.
Today, the hallway outside the delivery room was packed with people.
A group of bodyguards, all dressed in matching suits, stood in formation. At the front was a woman with sharp, striking features, her face etched with anxiety as she paced back and forth in front of the door.
After what felt like an eternity, a loud, clear cry echoed from inside the delivery room.
A moment later, a nurse emerged, cradling a swaddled infant in her arms. “Chairwoman Jiang, Actress Liu and the baby are both safe and healthy. Congratulations on your baby girl!”
Jiang Feng carefully took the red, wrinkled newborn into her arms, her body stiff as a statue, rooted to the spot.
Only when her wife, Liu Ying, was wheeled out of the delivery room after her recovery surgery did Jiang Feng, tears welling in her eyes, turn to her helplessly and stammer, “W-wife Xiaoman is so soft. I don’t dare move.”
Hearing her mother’s trembling voice, the baby in the swaddle opened her eyes.
Seeing the two women, one standing, one sitting calling each other “wife” so openly in public, the wrinkled, red-faced infant couldn’t help but sprout a giant question mark in her mind:
Huh? Didn’t I die a heroic death? What’s going on now?
The tiny baby tried to move her limbs, attempting to crawl out of Jiang Feng’s embrace. But she was so small, and the nurse had wrapped her snugly in the swaddle.
Not only did she make no progress, but the nurse even chuckled and called her lively.
When she opened her mouth, all that came out were incoherent babbles. The former almost-college-student Jiang Man had no choice but to accept this harsh reality:
She, Jiang Man, a girl who had gone through nine years of compulsory education, survived three grueling years of high school with early mornings and late nights, and finally received her college acceptance letter had, due to an act of heroism, taken the SVIP express lane to rebirth. Now, she was starting all over again as a human infant who would have to go through school from scratch!
The mere thought of enduring three more years of high school and another college entrance exam made the tiny baby’s face look utterly exhausted.
A kind nurse rescued the petrified Jiang Feng, and the two new mothers gathered around the crib, gazing curiously at their little one, unable to contain their amazement.
This tiny, red, wrinkled baby was actually the fruit of their love.
Watching her two mothers leaning over her bedside, Jiang Man couldn’t help but blow a spit bubble.
Babies had no rights, any resistance was seen as mere cooing in the eyes of adults.
Jiang Man was tired. She chose to lie flat.
A baby’s appearance changes almost daily.
A hundred days later, the once red and wrinkled Jiang Man had transformed into a fair, plump little dumpling.
As the only treasured jewel of the Jiang family, Jiang Man’s hundred-day celebration was exceptionally grand.
Not only did many prestigious families attend with gifts, but her actress mother, Liu Ying, also invited many of her former colleagues.
Nestled in Chairwoman Jiang’s arms, the baby had long, curly eyelashes, fair skin, and a head of light brownish-yellow curls. A frilly sleeping cap was tied on her head, making her look just like a doll.
But this doll wasn’t just pretty, she was also a cheerful, sociable baby.
Among Liu Ying’s colleagues was a producer who happened to be planning a reality show centered on observing infants.
After sharing the idea with Liu Ying and Jiang Feng, the two mothers glanced at the fair, chubby baby in their arms, smiled, and politely declined.
“If all else fails, a guest appearance would work too!”
Looking at the unbearably adorable Jiang Man before her, the producer of the baby variety show couldn’t give up and took a step back: “By the time this show airs, Manzai will be nine or ten months old. It’ll be a great chance for her to meet more little friends, and we can capture her interactions with them!”
No matter the type of variety show, besides the regular cast, having guest stars who join for just a few days and create unique chemistry and sparks with the regulars is another major highlight.
Since choosing natural childbirth, Liu Ying had entered a semi-retirement period from acting. Coupled with the fact that her partner, Jiang Feng, was the head of the largest talent agency in the entertainment industry, news about Liu Ying rarely made its way online.
If she could persuade her and secure her first post-childbirth appearance on a variety show!
Imagining the overwhelming traffic it would generate, the baby variety show producer was already daydreaming.
Sitting in her mother’s arms, Jiang Man yawned out of boredom, then nestled into the crook of her mother’s arm and drifted off to sleep peacefully.
Outside the nursery window, the leaves on the big tree had become bare, and Jiang Man had finally progressed beyond babbling, she could now say simple repeated words.
Before she even opened her eyes, the little one in bed had already begun her daily stretching routine.
Usually, at this time, her two mothers would be holding a handheld camera, their eyes filled with affection, aiming the lens right at her.
Half a minute later, the family’s nanny and the postpartum caregiver would enter with a warmed bottle. Ms. Liu Ying, her birth mother, would deliberately hold it mid-air to help her practice her grip not too far, not too close, just within Jiang Man’s reach.
Confident and assured, Little Man reached out, grabbed the object in mid-air, and opened her mouth, ready to enjoy her morning milk.
But as soon as she grabbed it, Jiang Man sensed something was off.
Why was today’s bottle so round and smooth?
She opened her eyes in confusion and found herself face-to-face with a round, struggling drone camera.
“Pfft?”
Wearing her little frilled nightcap, the baby wasn’t scared at all by the sudden appearance of the flying camera. Instead, she tilted her head curiously.
“Waa?”
What is this thing?
Hugging the round, metallic object, Jiang Man craned her neck and looked around. Neither of her mothers was in the room not even the postpartum caregiver who usually took care of her!
Unusual, strange, abnormal.
Detective Manzai narrowed her eyes as she examined the new gadget in her arms.
Holding the strange object, the little one grunted and huffed, mustering her strength to roll over and sit up.
Using both her hands and feet, she hugged the flying metal ball that had suddenly appeared in her room and began fiddling with it.
The cool, small metal ball was surprisingly easy to handle. As she stared at its silver-white shell, Jiang Man felt an itch in her gums.
She was already teething, and lately, her gums had been unbearably itchy, making her want to chew on everything.
In no time, the drone camera’s silver body and lens were drenched in drool.
Knock knock!
Just as Jiang Man was happily gnawing away, a sudden knock came at the door.
The baby’s sixth sense kicked in instantly. A second before the door opened, she displayed astonishing speed, shoving the large metal ball behind her back.
Glancing at the lump it created, Jiang Man guiltily leaned over and patted her little blanket.
As her two mothers entered, the chubby, fair-skinned baby tried to use her round little body to block the evidence of her crime.
However, the goal was too obvious. The two mothers clearly weren’t fooled by the cub’s clumsy act.
Seeing that her mother wasn’t deceived by her pretend innocence, the cub’s eyes drooped at the corners, welling up with tears as she blinked pitifully at her mom.
Suddenly, Jiang Man noticed a group of strangers standing at the doorway, holding cameras.
“Mm-ah?”
Jiang Man tilted her head curiously, staring at them, even forgetting she was supposed to be acting pitiful.
Ms. Jiang Feng, holding a milk bottle, stepped forward gleefully and pinched her daughter’s chubby cheeks. “That little metal ball earlier was actually a camera, you know. All of Man-man’s crimes have been recorded by the camera.”
Ms. Jiang Feng was quite the ruthless woman.
With one sentence, she shattered Man-man’s self-deception and laid the harsh truth bare before her.
“That was a live broadcast just now. Man-man, do you know what a live broadcast is?”
Seeing Man-man frozen like a wooden chicken, Jiang Feng chuckled and poked her. “A live broadcast means everyone could see exactly what Man-man was doing just now.”
Jiang Man, the fake cub, completely stiffened.
The “little hill” behind her took the opportunity to sway wildly.
The “kind-hearted” Jiang Feng reached out and rescued the flight camera, now covered in drool and “abused” by Man-man, from under the small blanket.
With the “evidence” now exposed, the cub pouted her lips, revealing a few tiny milk teeth, and gave her mother a sweet, ingratiating smile. Smears of drool ended up all over her mom’s face.
Jiang Man, a natural at acting cute, knew exactly how to soften Liu Ying’s stern, serious expression.
The chubby little cub wiggled her round body forward, tugged at Liu Ying’s sleeve, and stared at her mother with wide, round eyes, blinking innocently.
Jiang Man’s eyes sparkled brightly, as if the stars of the Milky Way had fallen into them.
She deliberately played dumb, blinking her beautiful eyes at her mother while flashing a sweet smile.
Her gleaming eyes were like two jars of honey, sweet enough to melt one’s heart. Her face beamed with such radiance it could melt anyone’s resolve.
Seeing her daughter deliberately acting cute and playing dumb, Liu Ying, though fully aware, couldn’t stay angry.
The two mothers closed in from either side, each pinching the chubby cheeks on one side of the cub’s face, then rubbing them with their palms.
The little cub wobbled unsteadily, unable to withstand the “evil” mothers’ kneading, before finally plopping down onto the bed with a soft thud.
Under the ultra-high-definition camera, Jiang Man’s fair cheeks turned pink, and her watery eyes seemed to swirl with little dizzy circles.
A milk bottle at just the right temperature was placed in her arms. Instinctively, Jiang Man hugged it with both hands and feet.
Sucking on the bottle, the milk inside visibly decreased.
Soon, it was empty. Jiang Man neatly spat out the nipple, rolled over, sat up, and stretched out her arms, asking her mother to burp her.
Faintly, Jiang Man seemed to hear the camera crew whispering praises about how well-behaved and sensible she was.
The fake cub Jiang Man couldn’t help puffing out her chest proudly: She wasn’t just any ordinary cub, she was once a soon-to-be college student!
However, since arriving in this world and becoming her mothers’ child, Jiang Man hadn’t had the chance to learn much about it.
Mainly because, as a cub, she couldn’t use a phone or access the internet.
Before this, Jiang Man had always assumed this world was similar to the one she came from.
It wasn’t until today, when she saw that distinctly futuristic flying camera, that she began to vaguely sense that this world might not be simple.
At the very least, its technology was more advanced than the world she had come from.
