Rebirth of the Vampire's Iceberg Hunter - Chapter 5
Gong Nan glanced at the distant clock. It’s five o’clock. She dropped the rag and left without a word, as if Chuanmei had never been by her side.
Chuanmei didn’t want to dwell on whatever changes had occurred in Gong Nan. She simply rubbed her stomach. She’s hungry…
And the food she craved wasn’t available in the cafeteria…
Not happy at all… Not feeling any happiness…
Yet Chuanmei followed Gong Nan to the cafeteria. A strange sense of self-destruction gnawed at her. She considered her options: if she left now to find another place to stay, what were the chances it would be better than this? The harsh reality was… well, she might not even find another place, let alone one that was better.
Still, it wasn’t impossible. If she went to Vampire territory now, she could immediately become a Prince and reach the pinnacle of life. But that wasn’t the life she wanted. Chuanmei felt like an oddity. In her previous life, she had never experienced happiness or joy, and these things had become an obsession, a relentless pursuit.
The students hadn’t been dismissed yet. To be precise, if they had been, Chuanmei and Gong Nan wouldn’t be allowed here. The first rule Gong Nan had given Chuanmei was to never speak to any of the boys in the school, and all the students were male. As a result, the cafeteria was nearly empty. Gong Nan, familiar with the layout, quickly got their meals. Chuanmei, not wanting to appear different, followed suit.
With only the two of them in the cafeteria, Gong Nan chose a table by the window, and Chuanmei sat across from her.
Despite being ravenously hungry, Gong Nan ate slowly and deliberately, her movements graceful and pleasing to the eye. Of course, this elegance applied only to her actions; her face was best ignored.
Chuanmei pursed her lips, recalling how etiquette had been a mandatory subject when she attended Vampire School in her previous life. She had never passed the class, but as a Pureblood Vampire, no one dared criticize her. After all, a vampire’s blood directly determined their status.
As Chuanmei stared at Gong Nan, she began to feel uneasy. Watching Gong Nan devour her meal only made her own hunger intensify. Her gaze fixed on Gong Nan’s neck, Chuanmei thought she could almost hear the gurgling sound of blood flowing through her veins.
This is torture!

After a while, Gong Nan’s plate was empty. Growing Vampire Hunters ate like bottomless pits, gender irrelevant in such moments. The portion meant for ordinary humans was utterly inadequate for her; she still felt ravenously hungry. Meanwhile, Chuanmei’s plate across from her remained full. Gong Nan finally understood why the other girl looked so frail.
Chuanmei could tell from Gong Nan’s expression that she hadn’t eaten enough. Since I’ll just throw it up anyway, she thought, I might as well give it to her.
But given their current strained relationship, Chuanmei knew Gong Nan’s stubborn nature would never allow her to accept the offer. While Chuanmei was still pondering how to approach the situation, Gong Nan stood up and walked away with her empty plate.
Chuanmei took two symbolic bites, fighting the urge to vomit, and hurried after Gong Nan.
Director’s Office.
“You said you found a top-tier candidate? Why didn’t you bring them here?” the Director asked Third Aunt, who had just reported in.
“Don’t even mention it. I misjudged. It turned out to be a girl. No matter, things have been hectic lately. I’ll go out and look again.”
“That’s fine. There’s no rush. Focus on nurturing the children we have here. We’re after quality, not quantity.”
“I understand. Oh, Director, I brought back another girl. Nangong was having trouble cleaning the entire courtyard by herself, so I thought it would be easier to bring another one. After all, it’s just one more pair of chopsticks to feed.”
“Third Aunt! Do you really think this is an orphanage? Last time it was that Nangong girl, and now another girl? I hope there won’t be a next time!” The Director was clearly annoyed. The fewer outsiders in the academy, the better.
“No, Director. I’m just thinking of the academy’s best interests. We have limited staff, and they’re all valuable talents. It would be a waste to have them doing menial tasks like sweeping and cleaning. Plus, the girls are young and easy to manage, so we don’t need to hire outsiders.” Third Aunt explained.
“I understand. But two girls are enough. I hope there won’t be a next time.”
“Understood, Director.”
“Good. You may leave.”
At the Vampire School, Chuanmei didn’t see a single student, but she sensed the presence of nearly a hundred in the teaching building. Yet the building remained eerily silent, as if no one were there at all.
Gong Nan led Chuanmei straight back to their shared room.
Chuanmei looked around. It was small, but impeccably clean. Gong Nan must tidy up every day.
“The bed is mine,” Gong Nan said as she walked in, her voice flat.
Chuanmei froze. Did this mean there was only one bed? And Gong Nan was claiming it?
Entering the room, she confirmed her suspicions: there was indeed only one bed. “Then what am I supposed to do?” Chuanmei wasn’t picky, but that didn’t mean she should sleep on the floor.
“That’s your problem,” Gong Nan replied coldly, showing no remorse for monopolizing the bed.
Chuanmei thought, As expected of the notoriously cold-blooded Vampire Hunter. Even before she’s fully grown, she’s already so unlikeable. Still, she would never consider sharing a bed with Gong Nan. No way! Aside from the inconvenience of going out to eat, what if she accidentally bit through Gong Nan’s artery in her sleep? The situation would become incredibly complicated. She wasn’t even sure if she could drink Gong Nan’s blood. Chuanmei refused to let the universe’s compensation for her entire life end for such ridiculous reasons.
For all these reasons and most importantly, because Vampires don’t need to sleep. Chuanmei silently accepted Gong Nan’s decision to make her sleep on the floor.
Once Gong Nan’s breathing settled into a steady rhythm, Chuanmei quietly left the room.
On her way to the orphanage, Chuanmei had made sure to note the location of the nearest hospital.
Chuanmei ran beneath the gentle moonlight, reveling in its glow. Unlike vampires who shun sunlight, she cherished the moon’s embrace, feeling every pore open and her entire being refreshed.
She navigated the familiar paths to the blood bank, where she drank the familiar-tasting blood. Every cell in her body seemed to roar with excitement.
From her past life to the present, Chuanmei had never actively sought human blood. This wasn’t due to any particular kindness, but rather her disdain. In her mind, only blood filtered and purified by hospitals was truly clean. She believed that drawing blood directly from a human body would also extract a portion of their soul and life force. These ordinary people possessed ordinary happiness, which Chuanmei craved but refused to obtain through such a tainted method. Perhaps it was also due to the Vampire Hunter bloodline that flowed through her veins. Subconsciously, she still saw herself as human.
Returning, Chuanmei felt her entire body surge with renewed strength.
Just as she was about to enter, a chill swept over her from behind. In an instant, she suppressed her instinctive urge to retaliate. Resisting now would expose her true nature, and the consequences would far outweigh any potential gains.
Chuanmei pretended not to notice anything amiss and continued to open the door. Normally, she wouldn’t need to unlock it to enter, but today was different. With an enemy present, she couldn’t simply walk in as usual. Since she hadn’t brought her key, she had no choice but to feign unlocking the door.
As Chuanmei pondered how to react next, the door suddenly swung open.
Startled, she was pulled inside by Gong Nan, whose face was cold and stern.
“Tell me,” Gong Nan demanded, her back still turned to Chuanmei, her voice icy. “Where have you been?”
Chuanmei was surprised by Gong Nan’s timely appearance. Based on her assessment, Gong Nan should currently possess limited abilities. Yet what had just happened couldn’t have been a coincidence. This meant Gong Nan wasn’t who she appeared to be. Unfortunately, as a Vampire, Chuanmei couldn’t discern Gong Nan’s true cultivation level due to the Pureblood Vampire’s overwhelming presence.
Regardless, the fact that Gong Nan had opened the door to help her out of a tight spot made Chuanmei think she wasn’t as cold-blooded as she had initially assumed.
“I went to the restroom and forgot my key,” Chuanmei replied calmly.
She wasn’t worried about further questioning, as any investigation would yield nothing of substance.
Gong Nan glanced expressionlessly at Chuanmei before turning and leaving. Chuanmei knew Gong Nan was highly guarded and wouldn’t easily trust her, but that didn’t matter. She didn’t need Gong Nan to believe her anyway.
