Rebirth of the Vampire's Iceberg Hunter - Chapter 4
Gong Nan glanced at her, her eyes now under control. “Right, you should grab a broom and help me sweep. Class will be dismissed soon.”
She couldn’t understand why she lost her composure so easily around this girl. She had endured the Gong Clan’s shifting moods, so why was she so infuriated by a mere schoolgirl?
Chuanmei had no idea what Gong Nan was thinking, and even if she did, she wouldn’t care. She was simply puzzled. Was this really a school? She looked around again. It certainly didn’t seem like one.
In her previous life, Chuanmei had never attended schools in the hunter world or human world, but she had studied at a vampire academy. The academy, housed in an ancient castle, was steeped in traditional vampire aesthetics. Since only a few vampires were eligible for schooling, there was only one such institution. But this place…
She really didn’t want to admit this was a school.
“Um, Gong… Nan Gong, I wanted to ask, is this a school?”
“You don’t know where you are?” How could she not know where she was?
Chuanmei lowered her head, thinking hard, but she still couldn’t figure it out. The place was too dilapidated. What puzzled her most was why Gong Nan would stay in such a run-down place.
Gong Nan watched Chuanmei lower her head, feeling a strange sense of satisfaction at having struck a nerve. Then she realized she had acted like a child.
“This is an orphanage,” she said, “a place for children abandoned by their parents.”
Just as she finished speaking, Gong Nan had expected the frail-looking girl to burst into tears. Instead, Chuanmei lifted her head, her large, watery eyes wide with innocent curiosity. “Gong Nan, that’s so sad,” she said. “Your parents didn’t want you, did they?”
Chuanmei wasn’t naive. She had understood Gong Nan’s intentions the moment she spoke. But Chuanmei had never cared much for the Chuan Clan in this lifetime. Still, she wouldn’t miss such a perfect opportunity to learn why Gong Nan was here.
“You—!” Gong Nan never expected this reaction. She had always refused to admit that the Gong Clan had abandoned her. In her mind, she had abandoned them the moment she fled. Yet deep down, the truth still stung, an undeniable fact she couldn’t refute.
Gong Nan’s heart burned with fury, her blood surging. The more she stared at Chuanmei’s pale face, the more she loathed it. Throwing caution to the wind, she swung a fist straight at Chuanmei’s face.
Gong Nan’s punch was utterly meaningless to Chuanmei. Had it been Gong Nan’s blood instead, that would have been a different story. Still, Chuanmei found the enraged Gong Nan quite amusing. In her previous life, she had never seen Gong Nan so flushed with anger, her ears burning crimson.
Chuanmei chuckled and effortlessly dodged the blow. Gong Nan’s face darkened further as she watched Chuanmei’s agile movements, her eyes burning with a murderous intent that seemed to want to tear Chuanmei to shreds.
Is she still too young? Chuanmei wondered. The person before her was so different from the Gong Nan she remembered from her past life. Was it simply because Gong Nan had grown up by then? Or was it this dark history that had shaped her into the person she became? Chuanmei had always wondered how someone who had been pampered and cherished since childhood could seem even more bitter and resentful than herself. It must have been this period, she realized.
“Why did you hit me?” Chuanmei asked calmly, her tone devoid of accusation, as if genuinely curious about the reason for the attack. Inwardly, she was nearly bursting with laughter. She never imagined that this hunter, feared by countless vampires, could have such a childish side. This is too amusing!
Gong Nan had finally calmed down. She couldn’t afford to cause trouble now; if the Director found out, she’d be punished again. Though she wasn’t afraid of being beaten, she was currently small and weak. Only by surviving could she avenge herself! I have to endure!
Gritting her teeth, she spat out, “My hand slipped.”
Chuanmei’s lips twitched. How could she come up with such a lame excuse? She seriously doubted if the taciturn, murderous Gong Nan from her past life was the same person as this girl who flared up at the slightest provocation. She truly didn’t want to believe that the Hunter Queen of her previous life had been this easily agitated girl.
Ignoring Chuanmei, Gong Nan strode toward the nearby women’s restroom.
Chuanmei followed her inside.
There, Gong Nan retrieved a medium-sized bucket, two brooms, and several dingy gray rags from the innermost stall.
“Time to get to work!” Gong Nan shoved a broom into Chuanmei’s hands.
Chuanmei’s forehead creased with black lines. Was she being treated like a child laborer?
Gong Nan grabbed another broom for herself. “We’ll divide the work. Use that tree as the boundary. You sweep that side, I’ll sweep this side.” She pointed to the tree as she spoke. With almost no shade in sight, the scorching sun had already made beads of sweat glisten on Gong Nan’s forehead.
Chuanmei glanced at the tree. Her side looked much smaller. She shot Gong Nan a surprised look.
“What are you staring at?! Get to work!” Gong Nan snapped, clearly irritated by Chuanmei’s gaze.
She’s so easily provoked! Even more easily provoked than my bat from my previous life!
Speaking of which, I wonder where my bat is now. It must have been born by now. That old monster—acting all young and spry despite being ancient!
The ground was littered with trash. Chuanmei began to suspect something was off. How could there be so much paper and debris? It was difficult to sweep; just when she’d finished, a gust of wind would scatter everything again, forcing her to start over.
Another pile of swept leaves scattered in the wind, and Chuanmei’s anger flared. After all, I’m a Vampire Prince! This is beyond endurance! Focusing her Gravity Technique, she increased the weight of every scrap of paper a hundredfold.
Chuanmei watched as a gust of wind swept through, leaving her pile of paper motionless. She smiled.
An hour later, both were still sweeping. Chuanmei found the task trivial, but she clearly saw Gong Nan’s sweat increasing.
“Are you alright?” Chuanmei asked, considering that Gong Nan hadn’t wronged her in their past life. They simply had different paths and couldn’t cooperate. Well, more accurately, their races differed, creating communication barriers. Still, she admired Gong Nan’s straightforward, brutal nature. And now that she was just a child, Chuanmei felt compelled to show some sisterly affection.
Gong Nan heard her voice and looked up to see Chuanmei, full of energy, wearing a concerned expression. She snorted, refusing to answer. It seemed she couldn’t believe she was exhausted while that weakling remained so energetic. Worse, Chuanmei’s question at this moment felt like a deliberate provocation.
Seeing Gong Nan ignore her, Chuanmei didn’t press further.
Gong Nan buried her head and continued sweeping. She had never imagined she would end up like this. Just a short time ago, she had lived in the Gong Clan’s largest villa, and no one had ever dared to defy her demands. Now, she was reduced to living at the mercy of others.
One day, she vowed, I’ll trample those people underfoot and make them understand that some people are not meant to be trampled!
After a while, the two finally finished sweeping.
Gong Nan’s breathing had calmed, and her expression had changed. How to describe it? Just moments ago, she had been like an indignant, rebellious youth, but now she seemed completely composed. Chuanmei looked into Gong Nan’s eyes and saw that the raw hatred and murderous intent that had burned there earlier were gone.
It was just sweeping the floor, not meditation. How could she have suddenly attained enlightenment? Chuanmei wondered, puzzled.
Gong Nan said nothing. She skillfully wet a rag, carried a bucket of water, and began wiping the railings.
Chuanmei remained utterly bewildered. What just happened? Why do I feel like I’ve traveled through time? The way Gong Nan looked at me earlier was exactly like she did in our past life—that arrogant, self-centered gaze that seemed to look down on everything. It’s not something I can easily forget!
