Chapter 3: You Don’t Have To Call Me “Classmate”!
Even though she had told herself a million times not to hang herself on the same crooked tree, Yue Lei still couldn’t convince herself to move away.
She didn’t know why Mo Yingxue was looking at her like that.
She only knew that she was completely frozen and didn’t even dare to breathe.
Until a cheerful voice came from behind Yue Lei. “Little Xue! Wait, I’m coming!”
She was startled.
The green light turned on, and a girl holding breakfast passed by her like the wind, ruthlessly taking away Mo Yingxue’s attention.
Only then did Yue Lei realize that she wasn’t looking at her.
The flame that had ignited in her heart was suddenly extinguished, leaving only ashes and lingering warmth.
After the two of them walked away, laughing and talking, she remembered that this wasn’t the time for self-pity.
Not meeting her wife now was the right thing to do.
She had nothing. How could she dare to touch the purest snow on the Heavenly Mountain?
The most urgent task was to find a job that provided food and housing.
Yue Lei secretly warned herself.
On the other side, Wu Jiajia handed the breakfast to Mo Yingxue.
Seeing her looking spaced out, she couldn’t help but ask, “Little Xue, what’s wrong? You’ve been distracted since you woke up this morning.”
College students’ friendships were often determined by their dormitories. They were the only two students in their class who commuted.
So they naturally became friends.
Mo Yingxue had recently grown fond of the soup dumplings near Wu Jiajia’s house and asked her to help her get breakfast. They always met at this intersection.
Hearing this, Mo Yingxue shook her head.
She lowered her eyes, her emotions not quite clear. “It’s nothing. Don’t worry. I think I just saw someone I know. I’m trying to remember who it was.”
This friend’s attitude toward people was always cold and distant, and Wu Jiajia had long been used to it.
But for her to think about it for so long, it must have been a very important person.
She suggested, “Should we go back and take a look? It’s still early. Maybe they haven’t left yet.”
“No need.” Mo Yingxue had thoroughly searched her memory.
She was sure she had never seen that woman before.
Maybe she just found her pleasing to the eye. The woman was indeed very beautiful.
“Jiajia, have you bought your art supplies for the next class? If not, should we go take a look after school?” Mo Yingxue changed the subject.
…
Perhaps because there were too many students and graduates near the university, basic jobs like a waiter or salesperson didn’t lack manpower.
After another attempt to get a job as a waiter at a small restaurant was rejected, Yue Lei wondered if she should leave the vicinity of the Southwest Academy of Arts to look for new job opportunities.
Suddenly, a short girl with a bob cut and a melon-seed-shaped face called out to her.
“Are you looking for a job?”
“Yes…” Yue Lei didn’t remember knowing this person. There was a hint of caution in her eyes.
The girl said, with a familiar laugh, “Then why don’t you cover for me for a couple of days? Something came up at my hometown, and I’m worried I can’t find a replacement.”
Seeing Yue Lei become more and more alert, as if she was about to run away, the girl slapped her forehead.
She used her right index finger to draw a circle in the air on her face. “We slept in the same room last night! Did you forget?”
“Oh, oh, I remember now. It seems like the clothes you wore today were on the stool!” Yue Lei dispelled her doubts and introduced herself, “Hello, I’m Yue Lei.”
“My name is Fang Dan. You can just call me Dandan.” Fang Dan happily pleaded with her. “Are you interested in covering for me?”
Yue Lei: “Tell me what kind of job it is first.”
“A model,” Fang Dan replied.
“Oh, it’s not what you think.” Seeing the suspicious look on Yue Lei’s face, her face turned red.
“I’m a sketch model. You just have to sit there. Don’t worry, it’s not a nude model. It’s the kind where you wear clothes. The pay is in cash, 120 yuan for half a day. How does that sound?”
It was also because Yue Lei stayed in the same youth hostel as her yesterday, so Fang Dan thought it was possible she was in need of money.
Otherwise, she would have been too embarrassed to offer a job to this cold, beautiful, and imposing woman.
Yue Lei wasn’t really planning on taking it.
But at this moment, the words “pay in cash” alone gave her no reason to refuse.
Yue Lei: “Dandan, how many days will you be in your hometown?”
She decided to take a gamble.
The Southwest Academy of Arts was so big. She might not run into Mo Yingxue.
But she really needed these few hundred yuan.
Seeing Yue Lei ask a question, Fang Dan knew the deal was done.
She happily made an “okay” sign with her right hand. “Three days! My train leaves at ten. Let’s hurry. I’ll tell you the important things about being a model, and we’ll go back once you’re sure.”
Whether a sketch model was beautiful or not was secondary. The most important thing was to be still and hold a pose for a long time.
Yue Lei was led by Fang Dan to the art studio. She seemed to know the drawing teacher well. After a few words, the teacher agreed to the replacement.
While the students hadn’t arrived yet, Fang Dan quickly started teaching her the poses.
She looked her up and down. “It’s easy to get tired if you sit so formally. It’ll be bad if your posture changes later. Relax a little. Stretch your legs forward and lean back.”
Yue Lei immediately adjusted her posture until she felt comfortable.
Fang Dan looked at the time and put her hands together in front of her. “I should get going. Thanks for your help.”
It wasn’t until the students started coming in, and pairs of eyes landed on her, that Yue Lei belatedly felt her throat tighten.
Although she had made her fortune in the live-streaming industry in her previous life, she had always worked behind the scenes and had rarely shown her face.
At this moment, facing these scrutinizing, curious, and playful gazes, she felt a little uncomfortable.
Fortunately, she wasn’t a timid person.
If someone looked at her, she would look right back.
Yue Lei had a strong presence. After she made money, she was even more arrogant and looked down on everyone.
Most of the time, the person who made eye contact with her would be the first to look away out of embarrassment.
At this moment, after she got used to it for a bit, she returned to her old self.
While the students were observing her, Yue Lei was also observing the students.
Gradually, her heart calmed down.
No matter what, she had lived longer and had more social experience than anyone in the room.
Who was going to fool who in society?
For Yue Lei, another piece of good news that was worth her attention was that she had made the right gamble!
Mo Yingxue wasn’t in this class!
Sitting still for three hours was hard work.
Although she got a fifteen-minute break every hour, when the bell for class ending rang, Yue Lei still felt like her bones were jelly.
She stretched a few times, took a picture of the students packing their art supplies, sent it to Fang Dan, and got her payment.
It was noon, and Yue Lei struggled between saving money by eating at the school cafeteria and the possibility of being discovered by Mo Yingxue. She chose the latter.
They didn’t know each other yet, and her first impression on her hadn’t been set.
Yue Lei wanted to meet her wife again when she was in her prime.
Not when she was in this pathetic state.
…
There were many art supply stores near the Southwest Academy of Arts. Mo Yingxue and Wu Jiajia went into the one they often visited.
The two of them quickly chose their paints and stood at the door to pay.
Mo Yingxue suddenly caught a glimpse of something. She patted Wu Jiajia’s shoulder. “Jiajia, can you pay for me first? I’ll transfer the money to you later.”
After that, she chased after that figure and quickly ran out the door.
Completely unaware that her wife’s eyes were fixed on her, Yue Lei held her head up, looking at the restaurant’s menu, contemplating what she could afford with her current financial situation.
She felt her shoulder being bumped. She frowned and turned to look with cold eyes.
The next second, Yue Lei froze.
The entire world seemed to lose its color and was hidden in the shadows.
Only the woman in front of her was vibrant and bright.
Mo Yingxue nodded apologetically, as if she had accidentally bumped into her. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine, it’s fine.” The scent of her wife instantly made Yue Lei forget her name.
Her mind was a tangled mess, and half of her body felt numb. She didn’t know what expression to make.
It was as if she felt embarrassed by the way Yue Lei was looking at her.
Mo Yingxue looked down, her gaze falling on Yue Lei’s lips. “Classmate, have you decided what to eat? Can I order first?”
“You go ahead!” Yue Lei immediately took two steps back and gave up her spot.
Her mind raced.
They were so close now that they could see how many hairs were on each other’s eyebrows. Her plan for a perfect first impression was now ruined.
So, should she continue to be a stranger?
Or should she go a step further and become a friend, and then slowly win her over?
Could she resist?
Yue Lei was very doubtful.
A few minutes later, Mo Yingxue moved from the spot she was in. “I’ve ordered, classmate. You can go ahead and order.”
“I’m not an art student! You don’t have to call me ‘classmate’!” Yue Lei retorted faster than she could think.
After she said that, she secretly regretted it. Was a title so important?
Stupid mouth, so fast!
“Then…” Mo Yingxue’s eyes held a faint smile. “Sister, are you ready to order?”
My wife called me “sister.” This is an experience I’ve never had before…
Yue Lei’s head was spinning.
One moment, she felt like she was about to fly. The next, she was so embarrassed that she wanted to hide under the covers and scream twice.
Seeing that more and more customers were coming into the restaurant, the cashier, who was forced to be a part of this show, couldn’t sit still anymore.
She smiled and raised her voice to get Yue Lei’s attention back. “Hello, customer. What would you like to eat?”
Yue Lei quickly replied, “The… the same as hers.”
After she finished ordering, she turned around and saw Mo Yingxue sitting in a booth at a four-person table, propping up her chin with her hand and staring at her.
When their eyes met, Mo Yingxue tilted her head and glanced at the empty seat next to her.
The next second, Yue Lei was as if being pulled by a rope. She uncontrollably walked over and sat down next to Mo Yingxue.
“Thanks for saving me a seat,” she said, feigning a serious look and nodding at Mo Yingxue.
Then she used all her strength to look away, pretending to be serious as she stared at the order receipt, as if it contained a map to a hidden treasure.
Yue Lei was trying her best to avoid leaving a deep impression on Mo Yingxue when she was at her lowest.
However, in her previous life, her wife was so aloof that they could eat two meals face-to-face in a single day and not say a single word. Now, she was propping up her chin and looking at her.
Her eyes, which seemed to be able to speak, blinked.
After a moment, she smiled softly.
Mo Yingxue: “Sister, we’ve met twice today. It seems we have a lot of destiny. Since you’re not a student, do you work around here?”
Yue Lei couldn’t speak at all.
Mo Yingxue’s knee seemed to have accidentally touched hers.
It was warm and pressed against her leg, making its presence known.
