After My Flash Marriage with the Movie Queen - Chapter 5
Yang Shan was silent for a long while before asking, “Wait—did you just say your grandma set you up with a thirty-four-year-old man?”
Shi Nanbei nodded, then corrected her. “But she’s a woman, not a man.”
“That’s not the point. Thirty-four is still old.” Yang Shan paused, then looked at her seriously. “Hold on, you are your grandma’s biological granddaughter, right?”
That question stumped Shi Nanbei. She bit her finger, thinking hard. “I think so? But Grandma always curses my dad, says he’s an ungrateful brat and that she should’ve left him by the river instead of picking him up.”
Yang Shan had always admired Shi Nanbei’s family situation, but after hearing that, her respect deepened. “Then yeah, probably biological.”
She studied Shi Nanbei’s soft, harmless appearance, sighed, and said, “Since it’s your grandma’s arrangement, it shouldn’t be too bad. But still, keep your guard up, okay? Don’t get tricked.”
Shi Nanbei nodded obediently. Yang Shan turned back to her laptop and resumed typing her “Crispy Duck Literature.”
By the time Shi Nanbei finished getting ready and went downstairs, nearly an hour had passed. She jogged to Zhao Xunyin’s car, opened the door, and slid into the passenger seat.
Zhao Xunyin was glancing at her tablet—probably dealing with work. When she saw Shi Nanbei, she set it aside and looked up.
This was her first time seeing Shi Nanbei all dressed up properly.
Shi Nanbei had the quintessential Chengdu-girl look—fair skin, delicate features, big round eyes that gave her the soft, kitten-like charm that made people’s hearts itch. Her face was a smooth oval, with a classical beauty to it, though her sweetness and innocence could easily stir up someone’s mischievous side.
“All done?” Zhao Xunyin raised an eyebrow.
Shi Nanbei smiled shyly. “Sorry for keeping you waiting. I’ll be faster next time.”
Zhao Xunyin chuckled and couldn’t resist reaching out to pat her head—just like she used to when Shi Nanbei was younger.
This kid, still knows how to please people.
“It’s fine,” Zhao Xunyin said with an easy smile. “Waiting for my wife is part of the job.”
Anyone else hearing the film queen say that in such a gentle tone would’ve blushed immediately—but not Shi Nanbei. She merely nodded solemnly. “Then I’ll make sure to wait patiently for you next time, too.”
She was completely out of sync with the script, yet for some reason, Zhao Xunyin’s mood lifted instantly.
Ah, being around a young girl really does make one feel lighter, Zhao Xunyin thought to herself.
Once their assistant confirmed everything was set, the car pulled out of campus. On the way, Zhao Xunyin asked, “What do you want to eat?”
Without hesitation, Shi Nanbei replied, “Hot pot!”
Faced with her wife’s firm insistence, Zhao Xunyin rejected her mercilessly. “Anything but that.”
Shi Nanbei glared at her, unwilling to back down even if the person beside her was the great Film Queen herself. “I want hot pot! You can’t treat me like this!”
Zhao Xunyin remembered hearing from Shi Nanbei’s grandmother that the girl was obsessed with hot pot—two or three times a week, no matter how many times her family scolded her. Zhao Xunyin wasn’t from Chengdu herself; she’d only studied there briefly in high school. As a northerner, she couldn’t quite understand the locals’ love for hot pot, but she did understand that eating it that often wasn’t good for one’s stomach.
Maybe it was age catching up with her, but these days, Zhao Xunyin was increasingly mindful of her health.
“Your grandma said your stomach’s not great. Less hot pot. I’ll take you next time,” she said calmly.
Shi Nanbei’s face fell in outrage. What was Grandma doing, tattling like that? What did her stomach have to do with hot pot? She was a medical student—she knew her own body!
Pouting, she whined, “My stomach’s fine! I just really want hot pot today. It’s our first meal together—don’t you want something exciting?”
“No.” Zhao Xunyin’s tone was flat.
Shi Nanbei: “……”
Ugh. Old woman—so hard to reason with!
Seeing her sulky face, Zhao Xunyin, who hadn’t dealt with kids for years, felt a headache coming on. Young people were wonderful, yes—but also stubborn beyond belief. Still, she wasn’t about to give in on this.
“Anything except hot pot,” Zhao Xunyin repeated patiently.
Realizing she wasn’t going to win, Shi Nanbei gave in with a sigh. “Fine, then what about skewers?”
Zhao Xunying: “……”
Oh, so you do know how to compromise, huh?
Ten minutes later, seated in a health-congee restaurant, Shi Nanbei looked absolutely devastated.
“You said I could eat anything except hot pot!” she protested. “This is false advertising! And besides—hot pot and skewers help dispel humidity, which is good for the body here in Chengdu! I’m serious, I study medicine. Doctors are compassionate and honest!”
Zhao Xunyin finished ordering and looked up with a small smile. “Oh? So what—you’re not lying because you’re not a Buddhist monk?”
Shi Nanbei: “……”
If I were a Buddhist, marrying you would’ve been breaking my vows!
When the food arrived, she gloomily lifted her spoon and took a sip of congee.
Her eyes lit up. She looked at Zhao Xunyin, soft and starry-eyed. “Jiejie, this is so good!”
Zhao Xunyin couldn’t help laughing at her adorable face. Her tone softened. “If you like it, have some more.”
Shi Nanbei obediently downed three whole bowls before burping contentedly and rubbing her stomach as they left.
Everyone knew Zhao Xunyin was a household-name actress. Whenever she went out, unless it was for a public event, she always wore a mask, sunglasses, and a cap. Today was no exception—though she was even more careful than usual, worried that if she was recognized, it might affect Shi Nanbei.
After all, her little wife had made it clear she didn’t want to go public yet.
Unfortunately, Shi Nanbei completely failed to grasp her good intentions. Instead, she tilted her head in curiosity. “Isn’t dressing like that more suspicious?”
In May, with the Chengdu heat setting in, such an outfit definitely drew attention.
Holding an umbrella, Zhao Xunyin led her toward the parking lot. She’d already sent the assistant home, so it was just the two of them.
After a moment’s thought, Zhao Xunyin smirked. “You’re right.”
This little brat had no idea how much trouble she was saving her. Who do you think I’m doing this for?
With that, she boldly removed her hat and sunglasses, leaving only her mask on as they walked.
Shi Nanbei looked at her. Something felt off.
After a long pause, she finally realized what it was. “But if you take those off and someone recognizes you, what will we do?”
Ha. So she did know the risk.
Zhao Xunyin gave a faint smile and tilted her head. “Then you’ll make the trending searches.”
Shi Nanbei: “……”
Oh right—this woman’s the one responsible for making every girl in the country happy!
How outrageous!
Because of that one remark, Shi Nanbei spent the entire walk glancing nervously around like a thief, terrified someone would spot them. When they finally got back in the car, she exhaled in relief.
Zhao Xunyin frowned slightly. “You’re that afraid of being seen?”
Was she just now realizing she’d married someone from showbiz? That should’ve been obvious from the start.
“Huh?” Shi Nanbei blinked in confusion.
“Afraid people will find out about our relationship?” Zhao Xunyin asked again.
She half-expected Shi Nanbei to deny it—after all, she was the double-award-winning film queen, the woman most lesbians dreamed of marrying. Even if Shi Nanbei wasn’t gay, Grandma had said she was a diehard face-connoisseur.
Shouldn’t marrying her be like hitting the jackpot?
But Zhao Xunyin guessed wrong.
Shi Nanbei straightened up, face serious. “I just don’t want to be doxed.”
She still remembered vividly how, a few years back, some rising male idol’s “civilian” girlfriend had been viciously hunted down by fans. The trauma had stuck.
Looking Zhao Xunyin dead in the eye, she declared with righteous conviction, “I’m going to be a doctor who saves lives. I can’t afford any scandals!”
Zhao Xunyin was stunned for a beat—then burst out laughing. She’d never seen Shi Nanbei look so earnest before. Adorable.
“All right, you want to be a spotless doctor,” Zhao Xunyin said, smiling. Then her tone shifted as she narrowed her eyes dangerously. “But wait—are you saying I’m your scandal?”
What, a double-award-winning actress isn’t good enough for her future doctor wife?
