Song Keling is a sophomore in the School of Biology at Xinda University. During a field internship, she accidentally discovers a small white snake crushed and injured by falling rocks.

The little white snake has shimmering crystalline scales, a distinct spine, and crimson vertical pupils. It is incredibly beautiful. Her classmates gather around and confirm: “It’s highly venomous!!”

Nonetheless, Song Keling rescues the dying little white snake. Her senior classmates tease her, calling her a modern-day “Xu Xian” (from The Legend of the White Snake), saying the white snake will cultivate a human form and come back to repay her. She laughs and says, “Let it come! I definitely won’t be scared unconscious.”

Once the snake recovers, Song Keling takes it back to the wild to release it. However, when she wakes up the next morning, she sees it right by her pillow. Song Keling “rocket-jumps” out of bed in a panic, nearly losing her breath! The culprit the little snake tilts its head slightly, appearing confused as to what’s wrong with her.

Later, Song Keling tells her roommates about the strange suspicion that the snake understands humans. Roommate: “Yes, yes, of course. It’s about to turn into a human and offer its body to you in marriage.”

Song Keling refuses to believe in superstitions. She writes a question on a piece of paper, asking the snake if it’s a spirit. The little white snake can’t read; it simply slithers gracefully across the A4 paper for a while, then wraps its thin tail around Song Keling’s fingertip, flicking its tongue to act cute and spoiled.

Song Keling thinks for a moment and asks tentatively, “Can you understand human speech then? How about you give me a kiss?” The little snake understands! It zooms toward her like a shot! At the last second, Song Keling catches it by the tail, gasping in terror: “No! You’re highly venomous!”
