- Chapter 4 - Just a Little Fox (4)
“Ji Shijin has the aura of death on him.”
When Ji Shijin woke up the next day and sat up, he saw a small red fluffy ball by the side of the bed. He froze for a moment before remembering that he had brought home a little fox yesterday, and the creature had insisted on sleeping in his room.
The little ball breathed steadily, clearly sound asleep.
Ji Shijin moved his fingers, using his own strength to prop up his upper body and shift himself onto the wheelchair by the bed. He moved quietly to the bathroom to wash up, making sure not to disturb the little fox’s dreams.
In reality, Shi Yan had long been awake. He was currently lying with his eyes closed, playing a bored game of chess with the system in his mind.
61 was the first to detect the change in Ji Shijin’s breathing and hurried to inform Shi Yan. “Hey, the mission target is awake.”
Shi Yan took a stealthy peek, his eyes darting around before he flattened himself back down before Ji Shijin could turn around, maintaining the facade of being deep in sleep.
61 was puzzled. “Host, why are you pretending to be asleep?”
After sensing that Ji Shijin had entered the bathroom, Shi Yan lazily stretched his limbs. “He does not want anyone to see his disability.”
This was something he had observed yesterday. While Auntie Hong and the servants managed everything in the villa, everyone seemed to have a silent agreement never to interfere with anything regarding Ji Shijin’s legs.
Last night was the same. Ji Shijin finished washing up and changing clothes alone in the room. Before getting into bed, he had given Shi Yan a complex look. Ultimately, viewing him as a little animal that understood nothing, Ji Shijin allowed him to stay in the room, letting the fox witness him struggle somewhat awkwardly from the wheelchair to the bed.
61 realized the truth. “So that is how it is.”
Now that Ji Shijin was up, Shi Yan no longer needed to pretend. He stretched and trotted to the bathroom door, letting out a small “Awoo.”
Ji Shijin, who was washing up, turned to look at him and paused. He then leaned down and beckoned. The little fox obediently followed his finger and jumped onto the vanity, sitting down and waiting for Ji Shijin to wet a face towel to wipe his face.
“Awoo!” Shi Yan let out a pampered cry, his face looking slightly comical with the wet fur, and then rubbed his head against Ji Shijin’s wrist.
Ji Shijin’s eyes flickered. Was the little fox expressing gratitude? The soft fur brushing against the skin of his wrist was a very novel experience.
Ji Shijin lowered his eyes, thinking that it was no wonder people loved keeping pets because the texture was indeed excellent.
He had no idea that a real fox’s fur was far from this soft. Only a fox that had cultivated into a demon could evolve and change its physical traits, such as making its fur softer, fluffier, and brighter in color.
“Let us go. I am taking you for a physical examination today.”
After breakfast, Ji Shijin still did not carry Shi Yan. He let him walk beside the wheelchair and board the car.
The pet hospital they went to was very close to the villa. As it happened, it was run by someone Ji Shijin knew.
The office door opened, and a slender young man wearing silver-rimmed glasses walked out. The moment he saw Ji Shijin in the wheelchair, a flash of surprise appeared on his face.
“President Ji, why are you here? Are there new instructions from the police?”
Ji Shijin did not like socializing, so he always brought an assistant when going out. At this moment, the low-profile Assistant Zhou stepped forward to shake hands with the doctor.
Assistant Zhou smiled easily. “Doctor He, the police matters have concluded for now. We came to see you today because the boss wants a comprehensive checkup for his pet.”
“Oh?” The man called Doctor He became interested. Following Assistant Zhou’s gaze, he saw the small red fluff ball sitting by the wheelchair.
“Tsk, tsk. This coat is magnificent. Where did you get this, President Ji?” Doctor He dropped his casual demeanor and crouched down with interest to tease Shi Yan.
Assistant Zhou calmly explained the events of the previous day.
Upon hearing that the fox had just been rescued from those people, the doctor frowned. He stood up and instructed the other doctors and nurses to help. “A full-body checkup is definitely necessary. Xiao Zheng, Xiao Xuan, go get ready.”
“On it, Doctor He!” Two youthful medical interns ran over. When they saw Shi Yan, their eyes lit up with identical amazement. They exclaimed, “What a beautiful little fox!”
However, having heard that this was a wild fox caught from the outdoors, they did not dare to grab him directly and stood aside waiting for instructions.
Ji Shijin had remained silent since entering. Others could not tell, but Shi Yan, standing by his legs, detected an unusual aura.
The little fox’s nose twitched, and he moved closer to Ji Shijin’s legs.
61 was confused. “Host, what are you smelling?”
Shi Yan paused before saying slowly, “Ji Shijin has the aura of death on him.”
Perhaps because he was a fox demon, or perhaps because he was not a native of this world, he could detect things that ordinary people could not. From the moment they left the house today, he felt that Ji Shijin was excessively quiet. It was not until he accidentally brushed against his legs just now that the fox’s keen sense of smell allowed him to notice something wrong immediately.
A faint, strange scent had suddenly appeared on Ji Shijin, emanating from his legs. Shi Yan saw at a glance that it was the aura of death belonging to a human.
“The aura of death? Is that not something that only appears when a human is about to die?” 61 took advantage of the fact that no one could see him and circled Ji Shijin to observe, feeling very curious. “The mission target only has disabled legs. He is far from death.”
“Yes, which is why this is very strange.”
“Hey, a fox demon showed up? How rare.” A strange voice entered Shi Yan’s ears, directly interrupting his conversation with the system.
Looking toward the sound, several furry heads popped out from the neat rows of small wards in the treatment room. It was a large orange cat with a group of kittens.
Shi Yan met the orange cat’s eyes. Both animals froze. The orange cat’s expression instantly became terrified, looking at Shi Yan as if seeing an ancestor.
Its voice trembled. “It is a very, very big fox demon!”
The shrill cat screech shattered the peace. Doctor He and the two interns ran over quickly, only to find the orange cat, who was receiving an injection, screaming and curling into a ball while shielding its kittens.
“What happened?”
Ji Shijin moved his hand and looked at the fox beside him, who was staring back with innocent eyes. He let out a soft laugh.
Eventually, they realized the cat was scared of the fox. Doctor He breathed a sigh of relief and explained to the others with a mix of laughter and tears. “It is fine. I expect it initially mistook President Ji’s pet for a fellow cat, then suddenly realized it was a fox and got a fright.”
After the chaos settled, they got down to business. Shi Yan was taken into a room for an examination, where a small patch of fur on his belly was shaved off.
The one shaving him was Xiao Zheng, who marveled while working. “He is so good. He does not even struggle during the shave. Is he really a wild fox? He is more obedient than a domestic pet.”
61 rolled around laughing at the sight of its host’s bare belly until Shi Yan pinched its essential energy line, causing it to stop with a sharp “Gack!”
“Shut up. Be quiet,” Shi Yan thought, lying on the examination table with his eyes closed. He let the doctors turn him over and over. He knew he was a demon and would not have the illnesses of ordinary animals. Even if they checked, they would find nothing except proof that his body was in perfect health.
“Yes, for now, there are no issues at all.” Doctor He explained the forms to Ji Shijin, telling him that the little fox’s health was incredibly robust.
However, some results required a short wait. During this time, Shi Yan hopped down from the table and trotted toward the ward area.
“Wait, it,” Xiao Xuan started to stop him, but she was silenced by a look from Ji Shijin.
He watched the little fox head toward the orange cat’s ward with a clear goal. His voice was calm. “He will not hurt anyone. Let him be.”
Doctor He raised his eyes, adjusted his glasses, and looked at Assistant Zhou. Assistant Zhou gave him a hand signal, indicating he should leave it alone.
Zhou had seen the little fox demonstrate human-like intelligence several times and knew nothing bad would happen. However, since the boss did not speak much, it fell to the assistant to explain.
“Stop playing dead. I know you are awake.” Shi Yan jumped onto a nearby shelf, right in front of the small door to the orange cat’s ward.
The curled-up orange cat moved and turned around dejectedly, not forgetting to hide its kittens behind its back.
“What do you want?” The orange cat forced its voice to stay steady.
Shi Yan glanced at it and then looked away to ease the cat’s tension. “You are also a demon. Why are you so afraid of me?”
Perhaps because Shi Yan was easy to talk to, or because his aura was calm, the orange cat hesitated for a moment before coming out of the corner. It poked its head out to the small hole in the glass door and sniffed from half a meter away.
After sniffing, it said with certainty, “You smell like you have lived for countless years. You must be a very, very great demon. Of course I am afraid.”
The orange cat patted its chest with lingering fear. “I have only lived for fifty years. I have only heard of great demons with thick demonic energy like yours from my great-great-great-grandfather. At first, you concealed your aura, so I did not notice. I thought you were just a newly awakened little demon, but then…”
The orange cat grumbled something else, but Shi Yan did not listen closely.
Given his power as a thousand-year-old demon, it was easy to hear what a small demon was saying, but he chose not to because he felt it was unnecessary.
Shi Yan flicked his tail. To the humans, it looked like two small animals staring at each other in silence. However, the orange cat’s mood clearly relaxed, and it was no longer nervous in Shi Yan’s presence.
From Ji Shijin’s position, he could only see Shi Yan’s back. That large, fluffy tail swayed back and forth, making him want to reach out and touch it. Even the phantom pain in his legs seemed to lessen.
Shi Yan talked with the orange cat for a while and learned that the kittens it was protecting were rescues. The cat had been injured two days ago while fighting another cat for territory and had come to the hospital for the humans to treat him.
The orange cat sighed deeply. “Small demons like us with weak power cannot heal themselves when sick. Fortunately, this human doctor is a good person who treats stray cats and dogs, so I felt safe coming here.”
Shi Yan nodded in understanding and changed the subject. “Are there many demons in the city?”
According to the data 61 had gathered, demons who have not taken human form usually live in their respective tribal territories and rarely appear in human society.
The orange cat shook its head. “I do not know. I ran away because I was playful. The cat I fought with…”
An incredibly human-like look of embarrassment appeared on its face. “That was a regular cat, not a demon.”
Understood. A demon cat with awakened intelligence lost a fight to a regular kitten.
Shi Yan could not get any more information regarding the demon race. He flicked his tail, jumped off the shelf, and walked leisurely back to Ji Shijin’s side.
That faint aura of death was still lingering on Ji Shijin. Since there were too many eyes here, Shi Yan decided to use his demonic energy to check him secretly after returning home.
This aura of death had appeared abruptly. It was very likely the cause of Ji Shijin’s death and the downfall of the Ji family. Shi Yan made a mental note to find the source of this aura when he had the chance.
