Chapter 17: You Can’t Possibly Not Know What a Ga…
Qin Yifan’s face soured, but Wu Yi simply smoothed out his coat, stood up gracefully, and gave the newcomer a brilliant smile.
Seeing Wu Yi safe and sound, Fu Liuye let out a breath of relief. However, his face lacked its usual warmth, replaced by an air of stern authority.
“Was the food good?”
Wu Yi pouted, offering his usual unfiltered critique. “It was terrible. Not nearly as good as Auntie Cen’s cooking.”
Fu Liuye couldn’t help but chuckle as he ruffled the boy’s hair. “Tonight, we’ll go to that place I mentioned.”
“Mhm!”
Snapping out of his daze, Qin Yifan finally slammed the table and stood up. “Who are you people?”
Before Fu Liuye could speak, Wu Yi interjected, “He’s my brother. What about it? You were the one being unreasonable first.”
Qin Yifan’s face turned various shades of red and white. Looking at the room full of obviously professional, hulking bodyguards, and then at the man beside Wu Yi who exuded an extraordinary aura, a thought suddenly struck him.
“Heh, ‘Sugar Brother,’ more like.”
Fu Liuye: “…” Qing Zhu: “…” Wu Yi: “…What’s that supposed to mean?”
Before Wu Yi could even process the remark, Qin Yifan seemed to have confirmed something in his own mind. He turned to Fu Liuye with a look of arrogance. Facing a man clearly much older than himself, he felt a bit lacking in confidence but refused to cower.
“Sir, if you have something to say, say it. What’s with bringing all these people in? Are you here to wreck the place?”
Fu Liuye’s expression had turned completely cold following the previous remark. “Which family do you belong to, that you dare to act so pompously in school?”
Normally, this would be the part where Qin Yifan would announce his family name and brag about his status. Instead, Wu Yi saw his expression waver; he actually looked like he didn’t dare to speak.
Is he actually scared?
Wu Yi felt a pleasant surprise. He turned to look at Fu Liuye, his eyes shining with a bit more admiration.
With his own “underlings” present, Qin Yifan naturally didn’t want to lose face. He countered, “What’s it to you? I should be asking you—what’s your intention, barging in here to cause trouble? Can’t we talk things out civilly?”
“This display of yours doesn’t exactly scream ‘civil conversation,'” Fu Liuye replied.
Fu Liuye didn’t care to waste words with such a person. He glanced back at a bodyguard. With just a look, the man acknowledged him, spared a glance for Qin Yifan, and left the private room.
“What are you doing?” Qin Yifan’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Fu Liuye said indifferently, “If you won’t say it, I have other ways of finding out.”
“…”
Wang Hao, standing nearby, had never seen such a scene, but in his heart, Brother Qin was the greatest. He stood firm by his side. “Go ahead and ask around! Our Brother Qin walks with his head high throughout all of Yunjing!”
Fu Liuye gave a very light laugh, not even gracing the boy with a glance. Instead, he looked down at Wu Yi, who was slowly zipping up his coat.
“The air here is bad. Take your classmate and wait downstairs. I’ll come down once I’ve finished here.”
Qin Yifan slammed the table again. “I dare anyone to leave!”
No one paid him any mind. Wu Yi finished zipping up and obediently gestured for Xie Jingchuan to follow him out.
The people flanking the exit tried to block his path, but they were caught between the suddenly encroaching bodyguards and couldn’t move.
Xie Jingchuan was still anxious, but looking at Wu Yi’s “brother,” he felt a sense of reliability and followed him out.
The sun was out today. Stepping out and standing by the car, Wu Yi squinted his eyes at the sky, a thought occurring to him.
“So warm. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have come out. I should have stayed to eat snacks in the garden with Auntie Cen.”
Hearing his muttering, Xie Jingchuan thought he was complaining about the situation and felt apologetic. “I’m sorry. My business wasted your time.”
“It’s fine! It was actually pretty interesting. If I hadn’t come, I wouldn’t have known Yunjing had such a bad restaurant.”
“…”
Wu Yi noticed the dark circles under Xie Jingchuan’s eyes and belatedly realized he might have been a bit reckless.
Qing-qing, how is he doing now?
“No change.”
The lazy tone made it clear Qing Zhu didn’t really want to talk.
Wu Yi felt a bit dejected. It’s fine, just think of it as a good deed. He is my roommate after all.
“I’m really grateful for today, but… you really don’t need to involve yourself in my affairs,” Xie Jingchuan said, having calmed down. He gave a bitter smile. “I’ve lived like this with them for a long time. I’m used to it.”
Wu Yi waved it off dismissively. “No worries, it’s a small matter.”
He truly didn’t find it troublesome—after all, he hadn’t done much; it was Fu Liuye who did the work. He didn’t notice, however, that Xie Jingchuan looked up at him with complex, obscure emotions in his eyes.
“Thank you.”
He repeated it so many times, yet Wu Yi didn’t take it to heart, simply nodding vaguely as he checked messages on his phone.
Shortly after, Fu Liuye came downstairs and gestured for Wu Yi to get in the car.
Xie Jingchuan wanted to ask about his own situation but felt too guilty to intrude. While he was hesitating outside the window, Wu Yi, who was playing on his phone in the back seat, suddenly looked up and shook Fu Liuye’s arm.
“Xie Jingchuan has a part-time job at 4:00 PM.”
Fu Liuye understood his meaning immediately. He looked at Xie Jingchuan. “Get in the car behind us. They’ll drop you off.”
Xie Jingchuan was overwhelmed by the gesture and could only thank them repeatedly.
As the car pulled away, Fu Liuye watched the young man get into the other car through the rearview mirror before turning to Wu Yi.
“Xiao Yi, are you close with him?”
Wu Yi hummed, not even looking up. “Not really. I’ve only met him a few times.”
“Yet you helped him so much.” Fu Liuye paused. “Is it because he also has ‘that power’?”
“Qing Zhu says he has a tiny bit, but it’s useless.”
Fu Liuye nodded, seemingly relieved. “By the way, the matter is settled. They shouldn’t give your classmate any more trouble.”
Wu Yi: “Really? That’s great!”
Fu Liuye hesitated. “Do you know why they were isolating Xie Jingchuan?”
“Mhm. Because Xie Jingchuan accidentally broke that guy’s phone. I heard it was the latest model, over ten thousand yuan.” Wu Yi thought for a moment. “Oh, right! There’s another possibility!”
Fu Liuye listened patiently. “Oh?”
“It might be because Xie Jingchuan is gay!”
“…”
Fu Liuye’s expression became subtly complex. He looked at the innocent-faced Wu Yi, feeling a sense of dissonance.
“You can’t possibly not know what ‘gay’ means, can you?”
Wu Yi’s eyes widened with excitement. He dropped his phone and grabbed Fu Liuye’s arm, eager to show off his limited knowledge.
Fu Liuye didn’t give him the chance, coughing lightly and patting the back of his hand. “I know. No need to explain.”
“Do you really know? Being gay is when a boy likes boys. Xie Jingchuan likes dating guys, so those ugly jerks are being self-important, afraid he’ll fall for them. They should look in a mirror; who’d be interested in someone that ugly…”
He rambled on with his critiques, unaware of the storm of emotions in Fu Liuye’s heart.
“Yes, yes, I know.” Seeing him about to continue, Fu Liuye changed the subject. “Xiao Yi, you’re in college now. Do you have any plans to date?”
“Why are you asking that too?” Wu Yi’s face fell instantly. “I’m not dating.”
Fu Liuye, seeing him so defensive for once, teased, “Why? Is Mr. Qing not letting you?”
He asked this because he hadn’t sensed the dark shadow since meeting Wu Yi today, assuming Qing Zhu hadn’t come along.
The moment the words were out, a faint mist spread from Wu Yi’s slender white wrist, as if asserting its presence.
Fu Liuye: “…”
“It’s not that. Qing-qing doesn’t care about that stuff. I just don’t have anyone I like.” Wu Yi leaned back into the soft seat, grumbling. “I’m a practitioner of single-ism!”
“Is that so?” Fu Liuye wanted to laugh. “You even know about that.”
“Hmph. I see people say you only need to date if you’re lonely. I’m never bored.”
Fu Liuye felt his words were still quite childish. He couldn’t help but reach out and rub Wu Yi’s head. “True, you’re the most independent.”
But… Wu Yi never feels lonely because Mr. Qing is always by his side, right?
Fu Liuye withdrew his hand. Looking at his remaining work schedule for the day, he didn’t feel his usual irritability. On the contrary, whenever he was with Wu Yi, his mood seemed to relax instantly.
Could it be that spending so much time with Mr. Qing has given him some kind of calming magic?
…
Over the next period, Wu Yi accompanied Auntie Cen on a shopping spree and even planned an end-of-the-year trip.
Fu Liuye had his assistant bid in several auctions, purchasing several pieces of collector-grade jewelry for Wu Yi. This left Wu Yi with no time for anything else; he loved to show off, taking photos to send to his friends and reaping a harvest of compliments.
Unfortunately, every time he asked Qing Zhu for his opinion, he only received the same repetitive replies.
Auntie Cen, having nothing to do at home, watched Wu Yi take photos of his new necklace.
“Xiao Yi, did you post these on social media? Auntie can go like and recommend your post.”
Wu Yi’s eyes brightened. “I do! I have accounts on Weibo and Red, but I’ve been posting for so long and only have a few followers.”
Cen Yue was an expert in this area. She immediately asked for his handle. After looking at a few posts, she realized why his account had no traction.
“Xiao Yi, these posts have some violations that affect the account weight, and the captions aren’t very engaging. Let me teach you how to post.”
Wu Yi sat obediently by her side, learning how to edit captions and retouch photos. He learned a lot that day.
His passion for new things always lasted a long time, so he spent a long while practicing. He finally cleared his old content and registered a new account.
“Auntie Cen said an account needs a ‘positioning.’ What should mine be?”
Qing Zhu: “A dummy who doesn’t run home when it rains.”
“…” Wu Yi reached out and squeezed the bracelet hard. “You’re so annoying.”
How was he a dummy?
After searching seriously for a while, he found that the “Rich Young Master” persona was very popular lately.
“I want this persona too.”
Qing Zhu: “If you’re exposed, your reputation will be ruined.”
“But I am a young master,” Wu Yi said with zero self-awareness. “Auntie Cen says she’s my mother, Fu Liuye says he’s my brother, and I have you. You’re my bodyguard.”
Qing Zhu: “…”
Wu Yi started giggling. “I’m just joking, Qing-qing.”
As usual, Qing Zhu teased him with silence.
Wu Yi was about to coax him further, but when he looked up, he saw they had arrived at the shop they were looking for.
Welcomed inside by the sales associate, Wu Yi looked at the vast array of products, unsure of what to choose.
“What do you think I should get for Fu Liuye?”
It was Fu Liuye’s birthday soon. He had already designed the cake but realized he hadn’t bought a gift yet. He had specifically brought Qing Zhu out today to help him shop in secret.
Qing Zhu ignored him, but the sales associate was very enthusiastic. After asking about the recipient’s age and style, she began making recommendations.
“These accessories would be very suitable. For formal occasions, cufflinks and tie clips are essential.”
Wu Yi quickly took a liking to a few, but felt they weren’t quite pretty enough.
“Do you have anything more expensive?”
The sales associate looked surprised but nodded with professional grace, leading him to another counter.
Wu Yi immediately spotted a pair of emerald-encrusted cufflinks. He remembered Fu Liuye had a very nice suit that would pair perfectly with them.
“I want to see these.”
As the associate turned to retrieve them, Wu Yi picked them up and studied them carefully, becoming more satisfied the longer he looked.
“I’ll take the—”
“Wait, didn’t I pre-order those?”
A familiar male voice approached from a distance, sounding lazy and arrogant.
Wu Yi turned to see Qin Yifan walking toward him. Behind him was a woman in a tracksuit who looked a few years older than him.
