Chapter 16: Likes Your Type of Pretty and Trendy…
Xie Jingchuan’s two roommates looked at the dirty socks and underwear scattered across the floor with embarrassed expressions, but they could only steel themselves and steer the conversation back to the main point.
“Never mind that. Xie Jingchuan was just getting physical with us,” one of them said, lifting his swollen arm to show the person in the middle.
“I…” Xie Jingchuan clenched his fists.
Wuyi couldn’t stand it anymore. “Can you really blame others because you didn’t step firmly and fell off the bed frame? Have you no shame?”
He was never the type to yell, so in a room full of loud voices, his words sounded soft and gentle, lacking any real intimidation. Instead of scaring anyone, it made everyone’s expressions turn subtle.
“So, what exactly does this have to do with you?” someone asked, though the tone wasn’t aggressive at all.
“…” For a moment, Wuyi was actually stumped.
“Can’t I just be a Good Samaritan? If you keep bullying classmates in the dorm like this, I’m telling the dorm supervisor.”
This “telling the teacher” behavior was clearly naive. The people present smirked mockingly. As the leader was about to speak, an abrupt ringtone—a tacky song currently viral on short-video apps—blasted through the small space. Wuyi winced; he had always found that song incredibly gaudy.
What a tasteless person.
The leader pointed forcefully at Xie Jingchuan. “Don’t be in a hurry. Just you wait.”
He answered the phone, his expression shifting noticeably. After listening to the other side, he glanced hesitantly at Xie Jingchuan and Wuyi, who was standing behind him.
“Right, he’s here. And that Wuyi from 306 is here too. All of us? Okay… I’ll ask.”
While he hung up, Wuyi was curious until Xie Jingchuan suddenly turned around, his face tense with anxiety.
“If Wang Hao tells us all to go in a bit, run as soon as you get downstairs. Don’t come with us.”
“Wang Hao?” Realizing Wuyi didn’t even know who he was talking about, Xie Jingchuan’s expression turned strange. “The leader.”
Wuyi understood. He poked his head out to look at the foul-mouthed guy at the front—the same person who had forced Xie Jingchuan to return to school for money at the dessert shop.
After hanging up, Wang Hao turned to them arrogantly. “Let’s go. Brother Qin is treating you all to a meal.”
Xie Jingchuan showed restraint. “I have a part-time job this afternoon.”
“Oh? So now you’re not even giving Brother Qin face? I see you’re getting more and more ungrateful. Is it because…” Wang Hao’s gaze instinctively fell on Wuyi again. “What? With an outsider here, you’re trying to save face? You weren’t this tough when you were begging Brother Qin for more time to pay back the money.”
Xie Jingchuan gripped his fists tight. Wuyi curled his lip. “Repeating the same old lines over and over just exposes your low IQ. Can’t you just get to the point?”
Wang Hao didn’t catch his cat-like murmur. “What did you say?”
Xie Jingchuan tried to stop him, but Wuyi dodged his hand and stepped forward. “I just don’t get you guys. If you’re going, then go. If it’s to solve a problem, why can’t we find a win-win solution instead of arguing here?”
He spoke with such righteous conviction that the others, staring at his impatient face, actually suppressed their tempers.
“What solution? Is it your place to talk?”
“What time is your shift?” Wuyi turned to Xie Jingchuan.
“I have to be there by four.”
“Then let’s just go eat now. We can finish early and leave. Everyone’s happy.” Wuyi thought it was perfect.
Wang Hao hadn’t expected Wuyi to have a plan ready before he even forced him to go. Xie Jingchuan was even more shocked. He knew better than anyone that this was a “Hongmen Banquet”—a trap. Since accidentally offending these rich kids upon entering school, his life had been miserable. He understood their tactics all too well.
Wuyi had stood up for him today; who knew how they would target him later? Did Wuyi really think a “meal” was just people sitting together to eat?
While Xie Jingchuan was filled with complex emotions, Wang Hao was delighted. “Wuyi is right. Let’s head out then. The cars are already downstairs.”
In that short time, Wuyi had formed his own idea. He tucked his hands into his pockets and walked through the gap they made for him. “Let’s go then. Where are we going? I won’t eat if the place is too low-class.”
“Don’t worry. Brother Qin always treats us at Xuanwei Fang. It’s one of the top restaurants in Yunjing.” Wang Hao caught up behind him. Though he maintained his posturing, his smile held a hint of fawning that made Wuyi uncomfortable.
“This person’s smile is so ugly,” Wuyi complained to Qing Zhu.
Qing Zhu: “…And you’ll have to sit at the same table and eat with him later.”
Wuyi glanced back at Wang Hao’s acne-covered face and looked away in disgust. He suddenly felt a twinge of regret.
…
Wang Hao’s cars were indeed downstairs, but they were just two beat-up compacts. Wuyi, already nauseated by the smell of dirty socks in the dorm, took one look and immediately backed away from the open car door.
“Why aren’t you getting in? Planning to make a run for it?” The ugly Wang Hao stood by, watching him like a hyena.
Wuyi crossed his arms and snorted. Fortunately, a clean sports car pulled up shortly after. Wang Hao said it was “Brother Qin’s” ride. The other punks were eager to get in, but Wang Hao used “watching the targets” as an excuse to usher Wuyi and Xie Jingchuan into that car.
Wuyi sat in the passenger seat, relatively satisfied with the clean interior, though he hated the gaudy color of the upholstery and looked out the window immediately. To Wang Hao in the back seat, this rejection looked like sheer cowardice.
He chuckled. “Scared? Don’t worry, we won’t do anything to you. Brother Qin mostly wanted Xie Jingchuan. If you say a few nice things and stay on call in the future, we won’t pursue what happened earlier.”
Wuyi rolled his eyes hard at the window. Before he could respond, his phone vibrated in his pocket. It was Fu Liuye. His eyes brightened as he answered.
“Hello?”
Fu Liuye’s voice was gentle. “Finished class? A Thai place opened near the office, it’s pretty good. Want to come over?”
Wuyi felt a craving, but answered honestly, “I’m going to Xuanwei Fang with some classmates. They say the food there is great.”
“Xuanwei Fang?” Fu Liuye didn’t seem to recognize the name.
“Mhm. Come pick me up after I’m done. This afternoon I—”
Before Wuyi could finish, Wang Hao grew impatient. “Who are you talking to? Trying to call someone to bail you out? Coward.”
His provocation was stupid. Wuyi didn’t fall for it and glared back. “I’m talking to my brother. Why are you butting in?”
With two others in the car, Wang Hao felt he was losing face. “You can barely protect yourself and you’re still yelling at me? You’ll see what’s coming.”
Wuyi huffed and went back to his call. Fu Liuye had overheard part of the exchange, his tone becoming serious. “Xiao Yi, who are you eating with?”
“Just classmates. One is my roommate; he was being bullied, so I’m helping him out,” Wuyi said, sounding rather proud of himself.
Fu Liuye was silent for two seconds, taking a deep breath. “Send me the private room number when you get there. How can you be there alone?”
“Oh, it’s fine. I’ll tell you when I arrive.” Wuyi felt no sense of crisis. He hung up, figuring Qing Zhu was there anyway, and he wouldn’t just fall into a slumber now. Right?
He touched his bracelet, but there was no reaction. His heart skipped a beat.
“Qingqing!” No way, don’t fail me now!
He spent the whole ride anxious. As they arrived and prepared to get out, Wuyi was on the verge of tears when a delayed response finally came.
“Making that face… weren’t you quite tough when you rejected me earlier?” Hearing that half-smiling voice, Wuyi felt alive again.
“You scared me to death!” His rejection of Qing Zhu’s earlier suggestion was out of guilt—he felt it was unfair to Xie Jingchuan. He wasn’t that cold-hearted.
Qing Zhu let out a soft chuckle.
…
Xuanwei Fang was as magnificent as Wang Hao had described. The Chinese screen at the entrance was intricate and luxurious. A waiter led them to a private room. The group swarmed in, making the elegant restaurant look like a gathering of street punks.
“Everyone’s here. Find a seat. If there’s no room, go to the lobby.” A lazy voice drifted over, laced with exhaustion.
Wuyi followed with his hands in his pockets. Wang Hao, acting like the top lackey, sent several people to the lobby.
“Brother Qin, didn’t sleep well again? Where’d you go wild last night?”
“Just family drama. It gets busy at the end of the year. My mom keeps nagging me to intern at the company, like she doesn’t see how busy I am.” He yawned, then seemed to remember something. “By the way, where’s the kid?”
Wang Hao and the others moved aside, revealing Xie Jingchuan and Wuyi.
“Here. And this kid who stood up for him. As soon as he heard we were coming to Xuanwei Fang, he followed without a second thought.”
Wuyi: “…”
Qin Yifan burst out laughing, clearly seeing Wuyi as an opportunistic social climber. He glanced toward the door, but when his eyes landed on Wuyi, he froze visibly.
“You…”
Wang Hao’s expression changed. “Brother Qin, you know him?”
“I don’t,” the man recovered. “I just saw him get into a Maybach at the school gate before. I thought he was some rich young master; turns out he’s just that type of gold-digger.”
“…”
Wuyi didn’t want to hear their nonsense. He looked around and found a seat. “When is the food coming? I’m hungry.”
He spoke as if it were only natural. Wang Hao was startled, but Qin Yifan laughed. “Fine. Waiter, bring the food. We’ll talk while we eat.”
The dishes Wuyi had been looking forward to arrived. He picked up his chopsticks and took a few bites, but was deeply disappointed and put them down.
“So tasteless.”
Sitting next to him, Xie Jingchuan turned pale at the comment. The others were watching them. Wang Hao wiped his sweat and checked “Brother Qin’s” reaction, only to see him looking at Wuyi with interest—an look that was clearly “off.”
Could it be… Wang Hao was surprised. He’d never heard of Brother Qin being into guys before; hadn’t he always dated girls?
“If it’s not to your taste, look at the menu and order something you like,” Qin Yifan said.
Wuyi wiped the corner of his mouth with a napkin and shook his head. “No. If they can make such simple dishes taste this bad, the chef must be incompetent.”
Qin Yifan smiled. “You’re quite the foodie. That ‘person’ of yours must take you out often.”
That person? Wuyi looked at him suspiciously, not wanting to talk.
“Well, since you don’t want to eat, let’s settle the score,” Qin Yifan said, putting down his chopsticks as he saw Wuyi avoiding the topic.
His bluntness was exactly what Wuyi wanted. “I came today to ask: what will it take for you to leave Xie Jingchuan alone? If it’s about the money for the phone, I can pay you first.”
Listening to this fearless negotiation, Xie Jingchuan’s hands tightened on his knees.
Qin Yifan smiled. “I don’t want money. If you really want to settle this for him, can you do me a favor? If you’re willing, not only will Xie Jingchuan be fine, but you’ll be able to walk tall in Yunjing from now on.”
“…” So pretentious. Wuyi complained silently but decided to be merciful and hear the favor.
The smile on the man across the round table became subtle. “I know someone powerful and influential. He loves making friends, especially pretty, trendy young boys like you. He’s very generous. If you become ‘good friends,’ he’ll definitely give you a lot of benefits.”
Wuyi frowned slightly. He sensed something was wrong but couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
“Wuyi.” Xie Jingchuan’s face turned ugly, but as he spoke, Wang Hao grabbed his shoulder with a clear threat.
“I refuse.”
Wuyi’s flat rejection surprised everyone. Brother Qin’s face darkened.
“Why?”
“I don’t want to make new friends. And since they’re your friend, they must have a terrible personality too.”
Someone at the table gasped.
“That’s not up to you.” Qin Yifan gave Wang Hao a look. The two men on either side of Wuyi stood up abruptly, looking ready to restrain him. “I’ll set up a time for you tonight—”
Before he could finish, two thuds echoed. The two men trying to grab Wuyi suddenly tripped and fell hard to the floor, kicking up dust from the carpet in a pathetic heap.
Wuyi didn’t panic. He sat calmly in his seat, about to speak. In the next second, the private room door was slammed open. Bodyguards in black suits swarmed in, startling the room full of students.
