Chapter 15: He’s So Pretty, Is He Actually a Guy or a Girl…
“You just wait!”
The man struggled to his feet and sat down clutching his arm, his expression twisted and hideous from the pain.
That phrase again. Wu Yi fought the urge to roll his eyes. “Yeah, yeah, I’m waiting.”
The frequency of that sentence was becoming tiresome; he was sick of hearing it.
Before he could go looking for Xie Jingchuan, a small stack of thin bills was thrust in front of him.
“I originally planned to bring this to the shop, but I’ve been stuck at my part-time jobs. I was going to head over this weekend, but I’ll just give it to you now.” Xie Jingchuan’s face was largely expressionless, though he couldn’t hide the deep exhaustion in his eyes. “Thank you for helping me before. They didn’t cause you any trouble, did they?”
Wu Yi reached out and took the money, counting it right in front of him. Once he confirmed the amount was correct, he shook his head. “I don’t think so. I haven’t even been to the shop lately.”
Xie Jingchuan frowned, looking worried. “If they want to cause trouble, they’ll likely find out you’re a freshman here. You should probably avoid hanging around campus for a while.”
Since Wu Yi didn’t live in the dorms anyway, he could leave immediately after classes.
“Can’t do that,” Wu Yi said honestly. If Xie Jingchuan met the criteria, he’d have to keep an eye on him for Qing Zhu, which meant spending plenty of time at school.
But seeing the young man’s tense expression, he offered a word of comfort: “It’s okay. I’m not afraid.”
The moment the words left his mouth, Qing Zhu saw through his thoughts and whispered, “His Mind-Power is weak. Are you sure you sensed it?”
“…”
What?!
Wu Yi was incredulous. He turned around, pretending to rummage through his backpack, while actually conversing with Qing Zhu.
“How is that possible? He’s being bullied by so many people, working so many part-time jobs… he’s clearly struggling. How can he have no Mind-Power?”
“Weak doesn’t mean non-existent.”
“Then what do we do?”
The little face that had been smug a moment ago immediately fell, his displeasure written all over his features.
Qing Zhu didn’t seem particularly inclined to comfort him.
“Let’s add each other as friends. If you ever need help with anything, feel free to reach out, if you don’t mind.”
Xie Jingchuan’s voice was cautious. Wu Yi snapped back to reality and realized the man was still standing behind him. Xie Jingchuan looked confused but pulled out his phone nonetheless.
“Alright.”
It’s weak now, but maybe it’ll get stronger later, Wu Yi told himself. More friends, more paths.
He did his best to console himself. After the friend request was accepted, he even looked up and gave Xie Jingchuan a good-natured smile.
Xie Jingchuan froze for a moment, his lips parting as if to say something, but a loud bang interrupted him—the dorm door was being pounded on again.
Unlike Wu Yi’s polite knock earlier, this was a violent thumping. One didn’t even need to look out to sense the hostility of the visitors.
The roommate clutching his arm seemed to come back to life at the sound. He stood up with a radiant, eager expression and rushed to open the door.
Wu Yi watched suspiciously as the other roommate, who had been “paralyzed” in bed, also hopped down with dog-like anticipation.
Unfortunately, the visitors weren’t exactly who they wanted. Upon seeing them, the roommates’ smiles stiffened, though they still let them in.
“Yo, look who’s gathered here. Brother Qin did some digging, and I didn’t realize the owner of that shop was actually a freshman at our school. Your family must be loaded—no wonder you act like such a pretentious prick.”
The familiar mocking voice approached along with the sound of footsteps.
Wu Yi was already annoyed from having picked the wrong target. Hearing this snide tone only made his blood boil further.
He turned around with a cold face. When the group of provocateurs locked eyes with him, they all froze for a split second.
Rarely were the dorm curtains wide open; the sunlight streaming in lit the room brilliantly. Standing in the aisle between the bunk beds was a youth with skin so fair that even this group of rough guys could see how strikingly beautiful he was.
Unlike in the shop where he wore a mask, Wu Yi wasn’t even wearing a scarf today. His cold, vibrant face created a unique, arresting aura.
The room fell silent until someone took a sharp breath and gasped.
“Holy crap… is he a guy or a girl?”
Wu Yi finally couldn’t take it anymore and rolled his eyes hard.
Did these people even graduate elementary school? Why is every single one of them so childish?
The man in the lead let out a sneer at this. “Maybe he’s a ladyboy. Since he loves sticking his nose in other people’s business, let’s find out exactly what he is.”
Wu Yi: “…Are you guys sick in the head?” Do they even think before they speak? Is there any logic in those brains at all?
As he spoke, the two men who had harassed Xie Jingchuan at the dessert shop stepped forward. They were clearly just bullying a classmate, yet they wore expressions as if they were doing society a favor.
Xie Jingchuan hesitated, then stepped in front of Wu Yi.
“Why involve others in our business? Haven’t I done everything you asked lately? Can you please stop pushing me!”
The entire room was startled by his sudden outburst, but someone soon burst out laughing.
“Hey, look at you playing the hero. Do you think there’s a girl here to impress?”
“…”
The next second, everyone’s gaze landed on Wu Yi. Even Xie Jingchuan paused halfway through turning his head.
Qing Zhu let out a low chuckle. “The Mind-Power got a bit stronger.”
Wu Yi’s face turned from pale to flushed as his temper flared. “I don’t want to help him anymore. Maybe Mind-Power only grows through suffering; we shouldn’t interfere with the process.”
Knowing he was just talking out of spite, Qing Zhu said nothing.
Sure enough, as the group pushed their way arrogantly into the dorm and began shoving Xie Jingchuan, Wu Yi’s expression darkened.
He loved to talk tough, but he rarely followed through on being heartless.
Without him saying a word, a gust of wind suddenly whipped through the room. Thick dust from the long-neglected windowsills swirled up, carrying a mountain of dirty socks from the balcony onto the floor.
The man in the lead was blinded by the sudden wind. Losing his patience, he stepped forward and grabbed Xie Jingchuan’s collar to pull him aside.
But before his hand could even touch the corner of Wu Yi’s clothes, his eyes flared with a burning, stinging pain. The people behind him also began sneezing violently.
“Dammit, what is this?”
“Is this dorm toxic? What’s that horrible smell?”
“Get some hygiene, will you? Don’t sneeze on me!”
Wu Yi pouted in disgust. He was debating whether to take Xie Jingchuan away from the dorm when Qing Zhu spoke.
“His Mind-Power isn’t enough. No need to waste any more time.”
“Didn’t you say it would grow slowly?” Wu Yi hesitated, looking at the back of Xie Jingchuan’s head.
Listening to the vulgar, noisy shouting in the room, Qing Zhu seemed to lose his patience as well. “How can it grow if you keep protecting him like this?”
Wu Yi froze, suddenly realizing what he meant.
But… leaving Xie Jingchuan behind at a time like this felt like an incredibly difficult thing to do.
Even though he was tall and standing in front of him, right now, Xie Jingchuan looked utterly pitiful.
