Chapter 10: He Had Long Since Become Accustomed to Depending on Qing Zhu…
Wuyi pondered all the way, but he still hadn’t figured it out by the time the car came to a stop. He followed Li Qingquan out in a daze, hearing the sounds of children playing and shouting from the courtyard.
Cen Yue had already arrived. Today, she wore a simple tracksuit and was squatting under a tree talking to a few children. Her expression was warm and kind, making her very popular with the kids.
“Auntie Cen~” Li Qingquan’s eyes lit up, and he strode toward her.
Hearing the voice, Cen Yue stood up and turned around. Seeing the two of them, she broke into a smile. “Was there traffic on the way?”
“With Auntie Cen’s car, the ride was smooth as silk.” Li Qingquan had a sweet tongue; having benefited quite a bit lately, he naturally put on his best attitude.
Cen Yue laughed at his antics and turned her gaze toward Wuyi.
“Xiao Yi, you don’t have classes this afternoon, right? Would you like to come over to our house for dinner tonight?”
Wuyi nodded without much hesitation. “Okay, thank you, Auntie Cen.”
He was always sensitive to the cold. Today, he wore a thin white down jacket with a fluffy blue-and-white checkered scarf wrapped around his neck, making his fair little face look soft and well-behaved. When he looked at people, he did so with great focus; beneath his thick, curled lashes, his gem-like eyes were so clear they made one’s heart skip a beat.
Cen Yue couldn’t help but remark, “Xiao Yi’s eyes are truly beautiful.”
Wuyi blinked, feeling a bit shy. “Thank you, Auntie. You’re very beautiful too.”
Cen Yue laughed heartily, draped an arm around his shoulder, and led him toward the main gate, introducing the supplies she had brought this time.
Li Qingquan followed behind them. Thinking there were no outsiders around, he leaned in and whispered, “Regarding that domestic violence incident a while back—did that little girl receive one of your dolls too? I saw it on the news.”
“Mm.” Wuyi nodded. Seeing Auntie Cen look over curiously, he explained further. “At that time, she had a lot of injuries. She didn’t fit in well at the orphanage, so I come to check on her sometimes.”
Actually, when he came before, he wanted to see Chen Yaya’s current state to wash away the lingering worry in his heart. But every time he left this place, his mood only became worse. Qing Zhu’s suggestion was to find a new foster parent for Chen Yaya, but it was very difficult to find a suitable family for a child her age. Having grown up in an orphanage himself, Wuyi understood this all too well and found it hard to harbor much hope.
Li Qingquan also sighed with emotion. “I saw that news right after I came down from the mountain. I was so angry—he’s a beast.”
That report was very popular in Yunjing. After Chen Du was detained for gambling, reporters interviewed the neighbors, who said he beat her constantly. A child that young had to do so many chores and was covered in injuries every day. They often heard the girl’s cries from their homes but could do nothing. Chen Du was a thug; once, when someone stood up for Chen Yaya, he harassed them at their workplace, nearly costing them their job.
Cen Yue had also seen the news. Her expression turned grim, and she sighed. “Poor child.”
Before entering, Wuyi caught a glimpse of a small shadow darting behind a tree out of the corner of his eye. But when he looked, no one was there.
The director was waiting inside. Seeing Wuyi and Cen Yue appear together, he was surprised. “Ms. Cen.”
Cen Yue smiled. “Hello, Director. Is everything organized inside?” She had arranged for the new desks, chairs, and beds to be delivered early this morning so she could inspect the results upon arrival.
“Everything is set. The teachers are making the beds now.” The director’s smile was undeniable, but his gaze kept shifting toward Wuyi. “This young gentleman visited last time… he is…”
Wuyi felt a bit embarrassed, but before he could speak, Cen Yue said, “He’s my younger son.”
The director knew Cen Yue only had one son. He froze for a moment before realizing he must be a godson. He broke into another smile. “I see. No wonder you’re both so capable.” Wuyi’s “brother” had called him before, but the voice didn’t sound like President Fu, which had struck him as odd.
After some pleasantries in the office, Li Qingquan prodded Wuyi to take him to find Chen Yaya. Learning that the children were currently having their afternoon nap, they rested upstairs to wait. However, since it was a bit late, not all the children were staying in their rooms. Wuyi walked to the office window and saw several children gathered in the courtyard outside the dormitory, whispering among themselves.
Two little boys below seemed to recognize Wuyi and ran over happily, looking up toward the window.
“Brother, did you bring little cakes today?”
Wuyi felt a bit bad. “Not today. If you want some, I’ll bring them to you this afternoon, okay?”
Their eyes lit up instantly. The previous shyness and caution vanished as they nodded eagerly.
Li Qingquan, quick on his feet, seized the chance. “In exchange, why don’t you tell us where Chen Yaya is?”
“Chen Yaya?” The two kids looked at each other, turned around, and began searching. Soon, they ran into the crowd to ask around.
Because they were too far away, Wuyi couldn’t hear them. Just then, the director served tea and called them over, so he followed Li Qingquan to the sofa. The room was filled with the aroma of tea. The newly turned-on air conditioner hummed with a faint, musty smell, showing it was rarely used.
“Truly, thank you for all these years of selfless sponsorship. Otherwise, our orphanage wouldn’t be able to take in so many homeless children.” The director chuckled as he poured tea. As he pulled his hand back, Wuyi noticed the frayed cuffs of his sweater.
Cen Yue didn’t show any disdain for the cheap tea leaves; she lifted her cup and took an elegant sip. “You’re too kind. The fact that Sun Orphanage is maintained so well is inseparable from your capabilities.”
The director was about to say something more when a commotion erupted outside the open window. Before he could put down his cup to stand up, hurried footsteps sounded from outside the door. Wuyi turned his head at the sound of the door opening and saw a female teacher walking in, breathless. A sense of unease suddenly welled up in his heart.
The director put down his teacup. “What’s wrong? Why the rush?”
The teacher was pale. Before she could even catch her breath, she gasped, “Director, Chen Yaya seems to be missing. We can’t find her in the dorms or the courtyard. The other kids say they haven’t seen her since breakfast.”
A missing child in an orphanage was a major crisis. The director’s expression turned solemn immediately. Ignoring everything else, he stood up to make a call and instructed security to check the surveillance footage. Wuyi also stood up quickly. In that moment, he finally understood the cause of the tension that had been lingering in his heart all day.
Cen Yue also stood up, preparing to go out with the other teachers to search.
A short while later, the security guard finished checking the footage. It only showed Chen Yaya eating breakfast in the cafeteria in the morning. By the time the morning exercises started, she had vanished.
“The last time she appeared was in the dormitory corridor. After playing in the equipment area, she went back to her room to get that rabbit, and then she disappeared.” The teacher was frantic as she finished adjusting the footage. “Chen Yaya is usually very well-behaved and never runs off. What happened today?”
Li Qingquan pondered for a moment. “She can’t just disappear from an orphanage. It’s only this big.”
Wuyi’s face turned slightly pale. He bit his lip. “Could someone have come in and taken her…?”
“That shouldn’t be possible,” the teacher said, shocked. “There are very few people around here usually.”
“Let’s look first. If we can’t find her, we’ll call the police.” The director made a sweeping gesture, telling the teachers to take the children back inside. He apologized to Cen Yue and the others before heading out to search personally.
Cen Yue hadn’t expected things to turn out this way. She called Fu Liuye to ask him to send some people to help.
Wuyi looked at the suddenly empty courtyard, feeling as though something wasn’t quite right.
“How strange. Should I try to calculate her location?” Li Qingquan scratched his head.
“Your calculations aren’t accurate at all,” Wuyi shot him down coldly.
“…” Li Qingquan, unconvinced, took out his tools and spent a good while calculating. However, there was no trace of Chen Yaya in any of the locations he came up with. Finally, he had to give up and followed the others to search the corners of the orphanage.
The orphanage wasn’t very large. Before long, everyone had searched every possible place, but she was nowhere to be found.
“Then we have to call the police.” The director’s face was grim as he turned to contact the authorities.
The unease in Wuyi’s heart grew heavier. He turned and walked to a deserted spot under the eaves. His soft palm gently rubbed the jade bracelet on his wrist. Even though he knew the person inside was still sleeping, he couldn’t stop himself from whispering that name.
What should I do?
He had long since become accustomed to relying on Qing Zhu for everything. Now that the other was suddenly unable to give any response, his heart felt empty.
Unconsciously, the temperature in his palm grew cold. Wuyi suddenly realized something and looked down in surprise. In the blink of an eye, a blue-light butterfly the size of a finger appeared before him, its wings fluttering gently.
Wuyi’s pupils were lit up by that glow. After catching his attention, the butterfly took flight toward a certain direction, trailing a long, dreamlike wake of shimmering light behind it.
He instinctively followed. Without a word to anyone, he chased it out of the orphanage and was led to a nearby desolate industrial area. This had once been an industrial park but was now abandoned and awaiting redevelopment, so there was no one around.
Following the butterfly into a dilapidated building, Wuyi couldn’t help but grip the cold bracelet on his wrist for a sense of security. Before he had gone far, a small figure curled up on a windowsill came into view, causing his worry to vanish instantly.
Seemingly hearing the footsteps, Chen Yaya sat up, clutching her rabbit. Her eyes were drowsy, but they lit up the moment she saw Wuyi. This reaction was unexpected; Wuyi even had the feeling that she had anticipated this result.
“Brother.” Chen Yaya’s voice was very soft, carrying obvious joy. She climbed down from the windowsill and walked toward him. “It really was you.”
Wuyi’s eyes widened slightly. “Why did you run all the way here?”
“Because I knew you would definitely come looking for me.” Chen Yaya looked up at him. “Brother, are you a god?”
Wuyi felt a strange tingling sensation on his scalp. “You…”
“I’ve kept the rabbit you gave me with me the whole time. I know it was you who saved me that day. So I guessed that if I suddenly disappeared, you would definitely come for me. That way, I could be sure it was really you.”
After saying this, Chen Yaya gave an embarrassed smile.
She is so smart.
Wuyi hesitated for a moment, then allowed her to take hold of his finger. He finally understood why he couldn’t stop thinking about Chen Yaya—it was because this little girl was so much like his former self.
The blue butterfly, having completed its task, silently brushed against Wuyi’s clean cheek before slowly fading into the air.
